Prólogo: Propósito y tema

Proverbios de Salomón, hijo de David, rey de Israel:

para adquirir sabiduría y disciplina;
    para discernir palabras de inteligencia;
para recibir la corrección que dan la prudencia,
    la rectitud, la justicia y la equidad;
para infundir prudencia en los inexpertos,
    conocimiento y discreción en los jóvenes.
Escuche esto el sabio y aumente su saber;
    reciba dirección el entendido,
para discernir el proverbio y la parábola,
    los dichos de los sabios y sus enigmas.

El temor del Señor es el principio del conocimiento;
    los necios desprecian la sabiduría y la disciplina.

Exhortaciones a buscar la sabiduría

Advertencia contra el engaño

Hijo mío, escucha las correcciones de tu padre
    y no abandones las enseñanzas de tu madre.
Adornarán tu cabeza como una hermosa diadema;
    adornarán tu cuello como un collar.

10 Hijo mío, si los pecadores quieren engañarte,
    no vayas con ellos.
11 Estos te dirán:
    «¡Ven con nosotros!
Acechemos a algún inocente
    y démonos el gusto de matar a algún incauto;
12 traguémonos a alguien vivo,
    como se traga la muerte[a] a la gente;
devorémoslo entero,
    como devora la tumba a los muertos.
13 Obtendremos toda clase de riquezas;
    con el botín llenaremos nuestras casas.
14 Echa tu suerte con nosotros
    y compartiremos contigo lo que obtengamos».
15 ¡Pero no te dejes llevar por ellos,[b] hijo mío!
    ¡Apártate de sus senderos!
16 Pues corren presurosos a hacer lo malo;
    ¡tienen prisa por derramar sangre!
17 De nada sirve tender la red
    a la vista de todos los pájaros,
18 pero aquellos acechan su propia vida[c]
    y acabarán por destruirse a sí mismos.
19 Así terminan los que van tras ganancias mal habidas;
    por estas perderán la vida.

Advertencia contra el rechazo a la sabiduría

20 Clama la sabiduría en las calles;
    en los lugares públicos levanta su voz.
21 Clama en las esquinas de calles transitadas;
    a la entrada de la ciudad razona:

22 «¿Hasta cuándo, muchachos inexpertos,
    seguirán aferrados a su inexperiencia?
¿Hasta cuándo, ustedes los insolentes,
    se complacerán en su insolencia?
¿Hasta cuándo, ustedes los necios,
    aborrecerán el conocimiento?
23 ¡Respondan a mis reprensiones!
    y no acataron mis reprensiones,
26 ahora yo voy a reírme de ustedes
    cuando caigan en desgracia.
Yo seré quien se ría de ustedes
    cuando les sobrevenga el miedo,
27 cuando el miedo les sobrevenga como una tormenta
    y la desgracia los arrastre como un torbellino.

28 »Entonces me llamarán, pero no les responderé;
    me buscarán, pero no me encontrarán.
29 Por cuanto aborrecieron el conocimiento
    y no quisieron temer al Señor;
30 por cuanto no siguieron mis consejos,
    sino que rechazaron mis reprensiones,
31 cosecharán el fruto de su conducta,
    se hartarán con sus propias intrigas;
32 su desobediencia e inexperiencia los destruirán,
    su complacencia y necedad los aniquilarán.
33 Pero el que me obedezca vivirá tranquilo,
    sosegado y sin temor del mal».

Introduction

These are the proverbs of Solomon, the son of David and king of Israel. They will help you learn to be wise, to accept correction, and to understand wise sayings. They will teach you to develop your mind in the right way. You will learn to do what is right and to be honest and fair. These proverbs will make even those without education smart. They will teach young people what they need to know and how to use what they have learned. Even the wise could become wiser by listening to these proverbs. They will gain understanding and learn to solve difficult problems. These sayings will help you understand proverbs, stories with hidden meanings, words of the wise, and other difficult sayings.

Knowledge begins with fear and respect for the Lord, but stubborn fools hate wisdom and refuse to learn.

Advice to a Son

My son,[a] listen to your father when he corrects you, and don’t ignore what your mother teaches you. What you learn from your parents will bring you honor and respect, like a crown or a gold medal.[b]

10 My son, those who love to do wrong will try to trick you. Don’t listen to them. 11 They will say, “Come with us. Let’s hide and beat to death anyone who happens to walk by. 12 We will swallow them whole, as the grave swallows the dying. 13 We will take everything they have and fill our houses with stolen goods. 14 So join us, and you can share everything we get.”

15 My son, don’t follow them. Don’t even take the first step along that path. 16 They run to do something evil, and they cannot wait to kill someone.

17 You cannot trap birds with a net if they see you spreading it out. 18 But evil people cannot see the trap they set for themselves. 19 This is what happens to those who are greedy. Whatever they get destroys them.

The Good Woman—Wisdom

20 Listen! Wisdom[c] is shouting in the streets. She is crying out in the marketplace. 21 She is calling out where the noisy crowd gathers:

22 “Fools, how long will you love being ignorant? How long will you make fun of wisdom? How long will you hate knowledge? 23 I wanted to tell you everything I knew and give you all my knowledge, but you didn’t listen to my advice and teaching.

24 “I tried to help, but you refused to listen. I offered my hand, but you turned away from me. 25 You ignored my advice and refused to be corrected. 26 So I will laugh at your troubles and make fun of you when what you fear happens. 27 Disasters will strike you like a storm. Problems will pound you like a strong wind. Trouble and misery will weigh you down.

28 “Fools will call for me, but I will not answer. They will look for me, but they will not find me. 29 That is because they hated knowledge. They refused to fear and respect the Lord. 30 They ignored my advice and refused to be corrected. 31 They filled their lives with what they wanted. They went their own way, so they will get what they deserve.

32 “Fools die because they refuse to follow wisdom. They are content to follow their foolish ways, and that will destroy them. 33 But those who listen to me will live in safety and comfort. They will have nothing to fear.”

Footnotes

  1. Proverbs 1:8 My son The proverbs in this section may have been directed originally to a teenage boy, perhaps a prince, who was becoming a young man. They are intended to teach him how to be a responsible person and leader who loves and respects God.
  2. Proverbs 1:9 Literally, “They are like a wreath of favor to your head and a necklace around your neck.”
  3. Proverbs 1:20 Wisdom Wisdom is pictured here as a good woman trying to get the attention of this young man, calling him to be wise and obey God. In a later passage (9:13-18), Foolishness is represented as another woman who is urging him toward a life of sin.

The Beginning of Knowledge

The (A)proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:

To know wisdom and instruction,
To [a]perceive the words of understanding,
To receive the instruction of wisdom,
Justice, judgment, and equity;
To give prudence to the (B)simple,
To the young man knowledge and discretion—
(C)A wise man will hear and increase learning,
And a man of understanding will [b]attain wise counsel,
To understand a proverb and an enigma,
The words of the wise and their (D)riddles.

(E)The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
But fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Shun Evil Counsel

(F)My son, hear the instruction of your father,
And do not forsake the law of your mother;
For they will be a (G)graceful ornament on your head,
And chains about your neck.

10 My son, if sinners entice you,
(H)Do not consent.
11 If they say, “Come with us,
Let us (I)lie in wait to shed blood;
Let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause;
12 Let us swallow them alive like [c]Sheol,
And whole, (J)like those who go down to the Pit;
13 We shall find all kinds of precious [d]possessions,
We shall fill our houses with [e]spoil;
14 Cast in your lot among us,
Let us all have one purse”—
15 My son, (K)do not walk in the way with them,
(L)Keep your foot from their path;
16 (M)For their feet run to evil,
And they make haste to shed blood.
17 Surely, in [f]vain the net is spread
In the sight of any [g]bird;
18 But they lie in wait for their own blood,
They lurk secretly for their own lives.
19 (N)So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain;
It takes away the life of its owners.

The Call of Wisdom

20 (O)Wisdom calls aloud [h]outside;
She raises her voice in the open squares.
21 She cries out in the [i]chief concourses,
At the openings of the gates in the city
She speaks her words:
22 “How long, you [j]simple ones, will you love [k]simplicity?
For scorners delight in their scorning,
And fools hate knowledge.
23 Turn at my rebuke;
Surely (P)I will pour out my spirit on you;
I will make my words known to you.
24 (Q)Because I have called and you refused,
I have stretched out my hand and no one regarded,
25 Because you (R)disdained all my counsel,
And would have none of my rebuke,
26 (S)I also will laugh at your calamity;
I will mock when your terror comes,
27 When (T)your terror comes like a storm,
And your destruction comes like a whirlwind,
When distress and anguish come upon you.

28 “Then(U) they will call on me, but I will not answer;
They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me.
29 Because they (V)hated knowledge
And did not (W)choose the fear of the Lord,
30 (X)They would have none of my counsel
And despised my every rebuke.
31 Therefore (Y)they shall eat the fruit of their own way,
And be filled to the full with their own fancies.
32 For the [l]turning away of the simple will slay them,
And the complacency of fools will destroy them;
33 But whoever listens to me will dwell (Z)safely,
And (AA)will be [m]secure, without fear of evil.”
