Asupra chezăşiei
6 Fiule, dacă(A) te-ai pus chezaş pentru aproapele tău,
dacă te-ai prins pentru altul,
2 dacă eşti legat prin făgăduinţa gurii tale,
dacă eşti prins de cuvintele gurii tale,
3 fă totuşi lucrul acesta, fiule: dezleagă-te,
căci ai căzut în mâna aproapelui tău!
De aceea du-te, aruncă-te cu faţa la pământ şi stăruie de el.
4 Nu da(B) somn ochilor tăi,
nici aţipire pleoapelor tale!
5 Scapă din mâna lui cum scapă căprioara din mâna vânătorului
şi ca pasărea din mâna păsărarului…
Fereşte-te de lenevie
6 Du-te(C) la furnică, leneşule;
uită-te cu băgare de seamă la căile ei şi înţelepţeşte-te!
7 Ea n-are nici căpetenie,
nici priveghetor, nici stăpân,
8 totuşi, îşi pregăteşte hrana vara
şi strânge de ale mâncării în timpul secerişului.
9 Până când(D) vei sta culcat, leneşule?
Când te vei scula din somnul tău?
10 Să mai dormi puţin, să mai aţipeşti puţin,
să mai încrucişezi puţin mâinile ca să dormi!…
11 Şi sărăcia(E) vine peste tine ca un hoţ
şi lipsa, ca un om înarmat.
Fereşte-te de răutate
12 Omul de nimic, omul nelegiuit,
umblă cu neadevărul în gură,
13 clipeşte(F) din ochi, dă din picior
şi face semne cu degetele.
14 Răutatea este în inima lui, urzeşte(G) lucrurile rele întruna
şi stârneşte(H) certuri.
15 De aceea, nimicirea îi va veni pe neaşteptate;
va fi zdrobit(I) deodată şi fără leac(J).
16 Şase lucruri urăşte Domnul
şi chiar şapte Îi sunt urâte:
17 ochii(K) trufaşi, limba(L) mincinoasă,
mâinile(M) care varsă sânge nevinovat,
18 inima(N) care urzeşte planuri nelegiuite,
picioarele(O) care aleargă repede la rău,
19 martorul(P) mincinos, care spune minciuni,
şi cel ce stârneşte(Q) certuri între fraţi.
Fereşte-te de preacurvie
20 Fiule(R), păzeşte sfaturile tatălui tău
şi nu lepăda învăţătura mamei tale:
21 leagă-le(S) necurmat la inimă,
atârnă-le de gât.
22 Ele te vor însoţi(T) în mersul tău,
te vor(U) păzi în pat
şi îţi vor vorbi la deşteptare.
23 Căci(V) sfatul este o candelă, învăţătura este o lumină,
iar îndemnul şi mustrarea sunt calea vieţii.
24 Ele te vor feri(W) de femeia stricată,
de limba ademenitoare a celei străine.
25 N-o(X) pofti în inima ta pentru frumuseţea ei
şi nu te lăsa ademenit de pleoapele ei.
26 Căci pentru(Y) o femeie curvă, omul ajunge de nu mai rămâne decât cu o bucată de pâine,
şi(Z) femeia măritată întinde(AA) o cursă unui suflet scump.
27 Poate cineva să ia foc în sân
fără să i se aprindă hainele?
28 Sau poate merge cineva pe cărbuni aprinşi
fără să-i ardă picioarele?
29 Tot aşa este şi cu cel ce se duce la nevasta aproapelui său:
oricine se atinge de ea nu va rămâne nepedepsit.
30 Hoţul nu este urgisit când fură
ca să-şi potolească foamea, căci îi este foame.
31 Şi, dacă este prins, trebuie să dea înapoi înşeptit(AB),
să dea chiar tot ce are în casă.
32 Dar cel ce preacurveşte cu o femeie este(AC) un om fără minte,
singur îşi pierde viaţa cine face aşa.
33 Nu va avea decât rană şi ruşine
şi ocara nu i se va şterge.
34 Căci gelozia înfurie pe un bărbat
şi n-are milă în ziua răzbunării;
35 nu se uită la niciun preţ de răscumpărare
şi nu se lasă înduplecat nici chiar de cel mai mare dar.

9 Cât timp vei mai sta culcat, leneşule?
Când te vei scula din somnul tău?

să mai încrucişezi puţin mâinile ca să dormi…
11 şi sărăcia vine peste tine ca un hoţ,
iar lipsa – ca un om înarmat.[a]

13 clipeşte răutăcios din ochi,
dă din picior
şi face semn cu degetele;
14 unelteşte răul cu lucrurile stricate din inima lui

15 De aceea distrugerea lui va veni pe neaşteptate;
va fi zdrobit deodată şi fără leac.
16 Iată şase lucruri pe care le urăşte Domnul,
sunt chiar şapte cele pe care le dispreţuieşte:
17 ochii sfidători, limba mincinoasă,
mâinile care varsă sânge nevinovat,
18 inima care urzeşte planuri nelegiuite,
picioarele care aleargă repede la rău,
19 martorul mincinos, care rosteşte minciuni,
şi cel ce răspândeşte discordii între fraţi.
Avertisment împotriva adulterului
20 Fiul meu, păstrează îndrumările tatălui tău
şi nu uita învăţătura mamei tale.
21 Leagă-le pentru totdeauna la pieptul tău,
prinde-le în jurul gâtului tău.
22 Când mergi, acestea te vor conduce;
când dormi, te vor veghea;
iar când te vei trezi, îţi vor vorbi.
23 Căci porunca este o candelă,
învăţătura este o lumină,
iar mustrarea disciplinară este calea spre viaţă.
24 Ele te vor proteja de femeia imorală[b],
de limba măgulitoare a femeii străine.
25 N-o pofti în inima ta pentru frumuseţea ei
şi nu te lăsa fascinat de pleoapele ei.
26 Căci din cauza femeii prostituate, ajungi să rămâi doar cu o bucată de pâine,[c]
şi soţia altuia îţi răpeşte viaţa îmbelşugată.
27 Poate cineva să ia foc în sân
fără să i se ardă hainele?
28 Sau poate merge cineva pe cărbuni aprinşi
fără să-i ardă picioarele?
29 Tot aşa este şi cu cel ce se culcă cu soţia altuia:
oricine se atinge de ea nu va rămâne nepedepsit.
30 Oamenii nu dispreţuiesc un hoţ dacă el fură
ca să-şi aline foamea când este înfometat,
31 însă dacă este prins va plăti înşeptit,
chiar dacă va trebui să dea toată averea din casa lui.
32 Un om care comite adulter însă este fără minte!
Oricine face aşa îşi ruinează sufletul.
33 Va avea parte de răni şi dezonoare,
iar ruşinea nu i se va şterge.
34 Căci gelozia înfurie pe un bărbat,
şi el nu va avea milă în ziua răzbunării;
35 nu va accepta nici o despăgubire
şi va refuza darul, oricât de mare ar fi el.

Dangerous Promises

If you have [b]shaken hands in pledge for a stranger,
2 You are snared by the words of your mouth;
You are taken by the words of your mouth.
3 So do this, my son, and deliver yourself;
For you have come into the hand of your friend:
Go and humble yourself;
Plead with your friend.
4 (B)Give no sleep to your eyes,
Nor slumber to your eyelids.
5 Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,
And like a bird from the hand of the [c]fowler.
The Folly of Indolence
6 (C)Go to the ant, you sluggard!
Consider her ways and be wise,
7 Which, having no [d]captain,
Overseer or ruler,
8 Provides her [e]supplies in the summer,
And gathers her food in the harvest.
9 (D)How long will you [f]slumber, O sluggard?
When will you rise from your sleep?
10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to sleep—
11 (E)So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler,
And your need like an armed man.
The Wicked Man
12 A worthless person, a wicked man,
Walks with a perverse mouth;
13 (F)He winks with his eyes,

He points with his fingers;
14 Perversity is in his heart,

(H)He sows discord.
15 Therefore his calamity shall come (I)suddenly;

16 These six things the Lord hates,
Yes, seven are an abomination to [h]Him:

(M)A lying tongue,
(N)Hands that shed innocent blood,
18 (O)A heart that devises wicked plans,

19 (Q)A false witness who speaks lies,
And one who (R)sows discord among brethren.
Beware of Adultery
20 (S)My son, keep your father’s command,
And do not forsake the law of your mother.
21 (T)Bind them continually upon your heart;
Tie them around your neck.
22 (U)When you roam, [j]they will lead you;
When you sleep, (V)they will keep you;
And when you awake, they will speak with you.
23 (W)For the commandment is a lamp,
And the law a light;
Reproofs of instruction are the way of life,
24 (X)To keep you from the evil woman,
From the flattering tongue of a seductress.
25 (Y)Do not lust after her beauty in your heart,
Nor let her allure you with her eyelids.
26 For (Z)by means of a harlot
A man is reduced to a crust of bread;
(AA)And [k]an adulteress will (AB)prey upon his precious life.
27 Can a man take fire to his bosom,
And his clothes not be burned?
28 Can one walk on hot coals,
And his feet not be seared?
29 So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife;
Whoever touches her shall not be innocent.
30 People do not despise a thief
If he steals to satisfy himself when he is starving.
31 Yet when he is found, (AC)he must restore sevenfold;
He may have to give up all the substance of his house.
32 Whoever commits adultery with a woman (AD)lacks understanding;
He who does so destroys his own soul.
33 Wounds and dishonor he will get,
And his reproach will not be wiped away.
34 For (AE)jealousy is a husband’s fury;
Therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
35 He will [l]accept no recompense,
Nor will he be appeased though you give many gifts.

Dangers of Debt
6 My son, don’t make yourself responsible for the debts of others. Don’t make such deals with friends or strangers. 2 If you do, your words will trap you. 3 You will be under the power of other people, so you must go and free yourself. Beg them to free you from that debt. 4 Don’t wait to rest or sleep. 5 Escape from that trap like a deer running from a hunter. Free yourself like a bird flying from a trap.
The Dangers of Being Lazy
6 You lazy people, you should watch what the ants do and learn from them. 7 Ants have no ruler, no boss, and no leader. 8 But in the summer, ants gather all of their food and save it. So when winter comes, there is plenty to eat.
9 You lazy people, how long are you going to lie there? When will you get up? 10 You say, “I need a rest. I think I’ll take a short nap.” 11 But then you sleep and sleep and become poorer and poorer. Soon you will have nothing. It will be as if a thief came and stole everything you owned.
Troublemakers
12 Some people are just troublemakers. They are always thinking up some crooked plan and telling lies. 13 They use secret signals to cheat people; they wink their eyes, shuffle their feet, and point a finger. 14 They are always planning to do something bad. 15 But they will be punished. Disaster will strike, and they will be destroyed. There will be no one to help them.
What the Lord Hates
16 The Lord hates these seven things:
17 eyes that show pride,
tongues that tell lies,
hands that kill innocent people,
18 hearts that plan evil things to do,
feet that run to do evil,
19 witnesses in court who tell lies,
and anyone who causes family members to fight.
Warning Against Adultery
20 My son, remember your father’s command, and don’t forget your mother’s teaching. 21 Remember their words always. Tie them around your neck and keep them over your heart. 22 Let this teaching lead you wherever you go. It will watch over you while you sleep. And when you wake up, it will give you good advice.
23 Your parents give you commands and teachings that are like lights to show you the right way. This teaching corrects you and trains you to follow the path to life. 24 It stops you from going to an evil woman, and it protects you from the smooth talk of another man’s wife. 25 Such a woman might be beautiful, but don’t let that beauty tempt you. Don’t let her eyes capture you. 26 A prostitute might cost a loaf of bread, but the wife of another man could cost you your life. 27 If you drop a hot coal in your lap, your clothes will be burned. 28 If you step on one, your feet will be burned. 29 If you sleep with another man’s wife, you will be punished.
30-31 A hungry man might steal to fill his stomach. If he is caught, he must pay seven times more than he stole. It might cost him everything he owns, but other people understand. They don’t lose all their respect for him. 32 But a man who commits adultery is a fool. He brings about his own destruction. 33 He will suffer disease and disgrace and never be free from the shame. 34 The woman’s husband will be jealous and angry and do everything he can to get revenge. 35 No payment—no amount of money—will stop him.
