And he had prepared for him a large room, (A)where previously they had stored the grain offerings, the frankincense, the articles, the tithes of grain, the new wine and oil, (B)which were commanded to be given to the Levites and singers and gatekeepers, and the offerings for the priests. But during all this I was not in Jerusalem, (C)for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I had returned to the king. Then after certain days I obtained leave from the king, and I came to Jerusalem and discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in (D)preparing a room for him in the courts of the [a]house of God. And it grieved me bitterly; therefore I threw all the household goods of Tobiah out of the room. Then I commanded them to (E)cleanse the rooms; and I brought back into them the articles of the house of God, with the grain offering and the frankincense.

10 I also realized that the portions for the Levites had (F)not been given them; for each of the Levites and the singers who did the work had gone back to (G)his field. 11 So (H)I contended with the rulers, and said, (I)“Why is the house of God forsaken?” And I gathered them together and set them in their place. 12 (J)Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain and the new wine and the oil to the storehouse. 13 (K)And I appointed as treasurers over the storehouse Shelemiah the priest and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah; and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were considered (L)faithful, and their task was to distribute to their brethren.

and he had provided him with a large room formerly used to store the grain offerings and incense and temple articles, and also the tithes(A) of grain, new wine and olive oil prescribed for the Levites, musicians and gatekeepers, as well as the contributions for the priests.

But while all this was going on, I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes(B) king of Babylon I had returned to the king. Some time later I asked his permission and came back to Jerusalem. Here I learned about the evil thing Eliashib(C) had done in providing Tobiah(D) a room in the courts of the house of God. I was greatly displeased and threw all Tobiah’s household goods out of the room.(E) I gave orders to purify the rooms,(F) and then I put back into them the equipment of the house of God, with the grain offerings and the incense.(G)

10 I also learned that the portions assigned to the Levites had not been given to them,(H) and that all the Levites and musicians responsible for the service had gone back to their own fields.(I) 11 So I rebuked the officials and asked them, “Why is the house of God neglected?”(J) Then I called them together and stationed them at their posts.

12 All Judah brought the tithes(K) of grain, new wine and olive oil into the storerooms.(L) 13 I put Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and a Levite named Pedaiah in charge of the storerooms and made Hanan son of Zakkur, the son of Mattaniah, their assistant, because they were considered trustworthy. They were made responsible for distributing the supplies to their fellow Levites.(M)

Now for the house of my God I have prepared with all my might: gold for things to be made of gold, silver for things of silver, bronze for things of bronze, iron for things of iron, wood for things of wood, (A)onyx stones, stones to be set, glistening stones of various colors, all kinds of precious stones, and marble slabs in abundance. Moreover, because I have set my affection on the house of my God, I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house, my own special treasure of gold and silver: three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of (B)Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the houses; the gold for things of gold and the silver for things of silver, and for all kinds of work to be done by the hands of craftsmen. Who then is (C)willing to [a]consecrate himself this day to the Lord?”

Then (D)the leaders of the fathers’ houses, leaders of the tribes of Israel, the captains of thousands and of hundreds, with (E)the officers over the king’s work, (F)offered willingly. They gave for the work of the house of God five thousand talents and ten thousand darics of gold, ten thousand talents of silver, eighteen thousand talents of bronze, and one hundred thousand talents of iron. And whoever had precious stones gave them to the treasury of the house of the Lord, into the hand of (G)Jehiel[b] the Gershonite. Then the people rejoiced, for they had offered willingly, because with a loyal heart they had (H)offered willingly to the Lord; and King David also rejoiced greatly.

With all my resources I have provided for the temple of my God—gold(A) for the gold work, silver for the silver, bronze for the bronze, iron for the iron and wood for the wood, as well as onyx for the settings, turquoise,[a](B) stones of various colors, and all kinds of fine stone and marble—all of these in large quantities.(C) Besides, in my devotion to the temple of my God I now give my personal treasures of gold and silver for the temple of my God, over and above everything I have provided(D) for this holy temple: three thousand talents[b] of gold (gold of Ophir)(E) and seven thousand talents[c] of refined silver,(F) for the overlaying of the walls of the buildings, for the gold work and the silver work, and for all the work to be done by the craftsmen. And he did what was (A)right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father Amaziah had done. (B)He sought God in the days of Zechariah, who (C)had understanding in the [a]visions of God; and as long as he sought the Lord, God made him (D)prosper.

He dug many wells, for he had much livestock, both in the lowlands and in the plains; he also had farmers and vinedressers in the mountains and in [b]Carmel, for he loved the soil.

11 Moreover Uzziah had an army of fighting men who went out to war by companies, according to the number on their roll as prepared by Jeiel the scribe and Maaseiah the officer, under the hand of Hananiah, one of the king’s captains.
