7 Vem vet vad som är bra för människan i livet, under de få och meningslösa dagar hon vandrar här som en skugga? Och vem kan tala om för människan vad som kommer att hända under solen efter att hon är borta?

2 Ett gott rykte är bättre än den dyrbaraste parfym,
och dödsdagen är bättre än födelsedagen.
3 Det är bättre att gå till ett sorgehus än till ett festställe,
för det är varje människas öde,
och det bör varje levande betänka.
4 Att sörja är bättre än att skratta,
för ett nedstämt ansikte gör gott för hjärtat.[a]
5 Den vises tankar är i sorgehuset
men dårens på nöjesställen.
6 Det är bättre att bli kritiserad av en vis man
än att lyssna på dårars sång.
7 Som törnris som sprakar under grytan
är dårens skratt.
Även det är meningslöst.
8 Rofferi gör en vis man till en dåre,
och mutor fördärvar hans sinne.
9 Slutet är bättre än början,
tålamod är bättre än högmod.
10 Var inte för snabb med att reta upp dig,
för förargelse bor i dårars hjärtan.
11 Säg inte: ”Varför var det bättre förr?”
för det är inte av vishet du ställer den frågan.
12 Vishet är lika bra som ett arv,
en förmån för dem som ser solen.
13 Visheten beskyddar, och det gör även pengar,
men fördelen med kunskapen
är att visheten ger sin ägare liv.
14 Se på Guds gärningar:
Vem kan göra rakt
vad han har gjort krokigt?
15 Var glad under de goda tiderna,
men inse i onda tider att Gud har gjort dem båda,
och människan kan inte utforska
vad som kommer härefter.
16 I mitt meningslösa liv har jag sett
att den rättfärdige går under i sin rättfärdighet
och den gudlöse lever länge i sin ondska.
17 Var inte alltför rättfärdig eller alltför vis.
För varför skulle du fördärva dig själv?
18 Var inte alltför gudlös,
och var inte en dåre.
Varför skulle du dö i förtid?
19 Det bästa är att gripa tag i det ena
utan att släppa det andra.
Den som fruktar Gud slipper hamna i ytterligheter.
20 För den vise är visheten en större styrka
än tio mäktiga män i staden.
21 Det finns ingen rättfärdig på jorden
som gör gott och aldrig syndar.
22 Bry dig inte om vartenda ord som sägs av andra,
så slipper du höra när din tjänare förbannar dig.
23 Du vet ju inom dig hur ofta du själv har förbannat andra.
24 Allt detta har jag prövat med visheten.
Jag sa: ”Jag vill bli vis”,
men det övergick min förmåga.
25 Vad visheten än är, så är den långt borta
och mycket grundläggande –
vem kan någonsin finna den?
26 Sedan beslöt jag att försöka lära känna,
utforska och söka visheten och meningen,
för att inse att det onda är oförnuft och dårskapen vanvett.
27 Jag fann att bittrare än döden är en kvinna,
vars hjärta är snaror och nät,
och vars händer är bojor.
Den som är god inför Gud undgår henne,
men syndaren blir hennes fånge.
28 ”Se vad jag funnit,” säger Predikaren,
”jag har lagt det ena till det andra
för att finna en mening,
29 som jag har sökt men inte funnit:
Jag har funnit en ärbar[b] man bland tusen,
men jag har inte funnit en enda ärbar kvinna bland dem.
30 Se, bara detta har jag funnit:
Gud skapade människorna rättsinniga,
men själva söker de allt annat.”

1-2 Ett gott rykte är bättre än den dyrbaraste parfym, och den dag man dör är bättre än den dag man föds!
3 Det är bättre att ägna sin tid åt begravningar än åt fester, för man kommer en gång att dö, och det är bra att tänka på det medan det ännu är tid.
4 Att sörja är bättre än att skratta. Sorgen kanske gör dig nedstämd, men den lär dig också något.
5 Ja, en vis människa tänker mycket på döden, medan dåren däremot bara tänker på att ha det roligt för stunden.
6 Det är bättre att bli kritiserad av en vis man, än att få beröm av en dåre!
7 När en dåre skrattar låter det som när torra kvistar sprakar i elden. Det är ingenting att fästa sig vid.
8 Mutor förvandlar en vis man till en dåre, och det förstör hans karaktär.
9 Slutet är bättre än början! Tålamod är bättre än stolthet.
10 Reta inte upp dig så lätt. Det är vansinnigt att ge efter för vreden.
11 Längta inte tillbaka till den gamla goda tiden, för du vet inte om det var bättre då än vad det är nu.
12 Att vara vis är lika bra som att vara rik, ja, egentligen är det bättre att vara vis.
13 Du kan få vad som helst både genom vishet och genom pengar, men det har många fördelar att vara vis.
14 Tänk på vad Gud har gjort och lev efter detta! Kämpa inte mot naturen!
15 Njut av framgång och lycka när du kan det. När svåra tider kommer bör du inse att det är Gud som sänder både lycka och prövningar. Därför vet du inte vad som kommer att hända härnäst.
16-18 Mitt i all meningslöshet som livet för med sig har jag sett mycket. En del verkligt goda människor har dött unga, medan andra som varit onda har fått leva länge. Var därför inte alltför rättfärdig eller alltför vis! För du vill väl inte dö i förtid? Var å andra sidan inte alltför ond - var inte någon dåre! En för tidig grav är väl inget att sträva efter!
19 Var öppen för varje uppgift som kommer i din väg utan att gå till ytterligheter. Om du fruktar Gud, kan du räkna med hans välsignelse.
20 En vis man är starkare än de främsta ledarna i tio stora städer!
21 Det finns ingen i hela världen som alltid gör bara det rätta och aldrig syndar.
22-23 Tjuvlyssna inte när andra talar! Då kan du få höra din tjänare skvallra om dig. Du vet ju hur ofta du själv talar illa om andra!
24 Jag har gjort mitt bästa för att bli vis. Jag sa till mig själv: Jag vill bli vis, men det hjälpte inte.
25 Visheten är långt borta och mycket svår att finna.
26 Jag sökte överallt, fast besluten att finna visheten och få svar på alla mina frågor. Jag ville avslöja allt det onda och oförnuftiga som dårskapen för med sig.
27 Min erfarenhet av kvinnor är bittrare än döden. Deras kärlek är en snara och med sina armar håller de fast dig. Den som lever för Gud försöker att fly från dem, men syndarna kommer inte undan deras snaror.
28-29 Det här är vad jag kommit fram till, säger Predikaren. Jag gjorde det efter att ha undersökt allting överallt: En på tusen av alla de män jag mött skulle kunna kallas vis, men inte en enda kvinna!
30 Och jag fann också att även om Gud har skapat oss människor som vi borde vara, tror vi alltid att vi själva vet bäst.

Chapter 7
Laughter and Anguish[a]
1 A good name is better than precious ointment,
and the day of death than the day of birth.[b]
2 It is better to go to the house of mourning
than to the house of feasting.
For that is the end of every man;
let the living take it to heart.
3 Sorrow is better than laughter,
because a sad countenance may conceal a joyful heart.
4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning,
but the heart of fools is in the house of gaiety.
5 It is better to pay heed to the rebuke of the wise
than to listen to the songs of fools.
6 For like the crackling of thorns under a pot,
so is the laughter of fools.
This also is vanity.
7 Oppression can make a wise man foolish
and a bribe corrupts the heart.
The Refuge of Wisdom[c]
8 Better is the end of anything than its beginning;
better are the patient in spirit than the proud in spirit.
9 Do not become easily angered,
for anger lodges in the heart of fools.
10 Do not assert that the past was better than the present,
for such a statement is not a sign of wisdom.
11 Wisdom is as good as an inheritance
and an advantage to those who see the sun.
12 Safeguard wisdom as you would a legacy,
and the advantage of knowledge is this:
it bestows life on the one who possesses it.
13 Consider the work of God.
Who can make straight
what God has made crooked?
14 When things are going well, be grateful for your blessings,
and in times of adversity consider this:
God has made both of them,
so that we cannot predict with confidence
what the future holds.
Whoever Wants To Be an Angel Ends Up as a Beast[d]
15 During my span of life I have seen everything:
Righteous people who perish in their uprightness,
and wicked people who grow old in their wickedness.
16 Do not be excessively righteous
or show yourself to be unduly wise.[e]
Why should you destroy yourself?
17 Do not be excessively wicked
or act like a fool.
Why should you die before your time?[f]
18 It would be best for you to hold on to one
and not let go of the other.[g]
For the one who fears God will eventually succeed.
19 Wisdom gives greater strength to the wise man
than ten rulers in a city.
20 There is no one on earth who is so righteous
that he does nothing but good and never sins.[h]
21 If you do not pay attention to all that people say,
you will never hear your servant speaking ill of you.
22 For you know in your heart
that you have often spoken ill of others.
23 All this I have put to the test of wisdom:
I said, “I am determined to be wise,”
but such wisdom was beyond my reach.
24 This state of wisdom is far off and buried very deep.
Who can discover it?
Man and Woman[i]
25 I then turned my thoughts
in the direction of knowledge.
My mind sought to search out and seek wisdom
and the reason why things are as they are,
only to realize that it is foolish to be wicked
and madness to act like a fool.
26 I find more bitter than death
the woman who is a snare:[j]
her heart is a net
and her arms are chains.
One who pleases God escapes her clutches,
but the sinner is captured by her.
27 Behold, this is what I have discovered, says Qoheleth:
As I have added one thing to another in order to draw some conclusion,
28 which my mind has sought repeatedly
but has not yet discovered,
I have found one man out of a thousand,
but a woman among them all I have not found.
29 This alone have I found out:
God made human beings straightforward,
but they often follow devious paths.

- Ecclesiastes 7:1 We must realize that there is no equality between life and death; death will always have the last word. It is useless for us to try to evade this point; a proper equilibrium lies in accepting the human condition such as it is.
- Ecclesiastes 7:1 The day of death [is better] than the day of birth: see 2 Cor 5:1-10; Phil 1:21-23. In verses 2-6, Qoheleth shows how we learn more from times of trial than from times of happiness.
- Ecclesiastes 7:8 Wisdom is a refuge for human beings. The present moment is God’s gift to humans; by living it correctly we get closer to God (see Rom 8:28-29).
- Ecclesiastes 7:15 We should not imagine that by dint of our performance in justice, i.e., in virtue, we could guarantee our future and rejoice at the fall of the wicked. Such a pretense would ordinarily become perverted into pride and severity. Wisdom is the power of life, but no one can possess it; we can only try to live wisely and humbly.
- Ecclesiastes 7:16 Excessively righteous . . . unduly wise: these attitudes are to be avoided, for they lead to self-righteousness and pride.
- Ecclesiastes 7:17 In Old Testament times, the wicked were regarded as certain to undergo an untimely end at the hand of God (see 1 Sam 2:31-34; Ps 55:24; Prov 10:27; Jer 17:11).
- Ecclesiastes 7:18 Hold on to one and not let go of the other: i.e., the words in verses 16-17.
- Ecclesiastes 7:20 For more on the truth set forth in this verse, see Rom 3:9-20 and note; 5:12-21 and note.
- Ecclesiastes 7:25 The wisdom of the time easily set forth its warnings about the seductress in the belief that every woman is by nature a trap for men. Qoheleth recalls these clichés, but one has the impression that he regards them as caricatures; for he knows that man is more complicated, or, better, that he makes things more complicated.
- Ecclesiastes 7:26 The woman who is a snare: this is the seductress about whom men are warned (see Prov 2:16-19; 5:1-14; 6:24-29; 7:1-27), but elsewhere Scripture exalts the virtues of man’s lifetime companion (see Eccl 9:9; Prov 5:15-23; 31:10-31).

7 Extortion turns a wise person into a fool,

For it is not wise to ask such questions.

as money is a shelter,

24 Whatever exists is far off and most profound—
who can discover it?(AD)
25 So I turned my mind to understand,
to investigate and to search out wisdom and the scheme of things(AE)
and to understand the stupidity of wickedness
