12 Tänk på din Skapare i din ungdomstid,
innan de onda dagarna kommer
och de år närmar sig om vilka du säger:
”De ger mig ingen glädje”,
2 innan solen och ljuset och månen och stjärnorna blir dunkla,
och molnen återvänder efter regnet.
3 Då darrar väktarna i huset,
de starka männen böjer sig,
malerskorna har slutat mala, när de är så få,
och de som ser ut genom fönstren bara ser mörker.
4 Då stängs dörrarna mot gatan,
och ljudet från kvarnen dämpas.
Man vaknar till fågelsång,
men sångerskorna har sänkt rösten.
5 Då blir man rädd för alla högt belägna platser
och för fasor längs vägen,
när mandelträdet blommar,
gräshoppan släpar sig[a] fram,
och kaprisknoppen har mist sin kraft.
Människan går till sitt eviga hem,
och de sörjande går omkring på gatan,
6 silvertråden brister,
guldskålen slås sönder,
krukan krossas vid källan
och hjulet bryts vid brunnen,
7 stoftet vänder tillbaka till jorden, som det en gång kom från,
och livsanden vänder tillbaka till Gud, som en gång gav den.
Slutord
8 ”Meningslöst! Meningslöst!”
säger Predikaren.
”Allting är meningslöst.”
9 Men Predikaren var inte bara vis, utan han förmedlade också sin kunskap till folket. Han tänkte också ut, formulerade och författade många ordspråk. 10 Predikaren sökte noga efter de rätta orden och skrev ner rättframma sanningar.
11 De visas ord är som oxpikar, ja som väl islagna spikar är deras tänkespråk. De kommer från en och samme herde. 12 Men jag vill varna dig, min son, för allt annat utöver detta.
Det myckna bokskrivandet har inget slut, och mycket studium är tröttande för kroppen.
13 Mycket har vi nu hört,
och detta blir slutsatsen:
Frukta Gud och håll hans bud,
detta är varje människas plikt.
14 För Gud kommer att döma alla gärningar,
också de fördolda,
goda såväl som onda.

12 (A) Tänk på din Skapare
i din ungdoms dagar,[a]
innan de onda dagarna kommer
och åren då du säger:
”De ger mig ingen glädje” –
2 innan solen och ljuset
och månen och stjärnorna
förmörkas
och molnen kommer åter
efter regnet,
3 (B) då husets väktare darrar
och de starka männen[b] sviker,
då malerskorna[c] slutat mala
eftersom de blivit så få
och spejarna[d] har det mörkt
i sina gluggar,
4 då båda portarna
mot gatan[e] stängs till
och ljudet från kvarnen försvagas,
då man vaknar av fågelsång
och sångens alla döttrar
sänker rösten,
5 då man är rädd för var backe
och farorna på vägen,
då mandelträdet[f] blommar,
gräshoppan släpar sig fram
och kaprisknoppen[g] saknar kraft,
då människan går till
sin eviga boning
och gråtarna går omkring
på gatan,
6 innan silvertråden brister
och guldskålen slås sönder,
innan krukan vid källan krossas
och hjulet går sönder
vid brunnen,
7 (C) då stoftet vänder åter
till jorden det kom från
och anden vänder åter
till Gud som gav den.
8 (D) Förgängligt, förgängligt!
säger Predikaren.
Allt är förgängligt!
Slutord
9 (E) För övrigt var Predikaren en vis man som ständigt undervisade folket[h]. Han övervägde, utforskade och författade många ordspråk[i]. 10 Predikaren sökte finna de rätta orden och skriva sanningens ord rakt och rätt.
11 (F) De visas ord är som uddar,
som indrivna spikar
är deras samlade tänkespråk.
De är gåvor
från en och samma Herde.
12 För övrigt, min son,
låt varna dig!
Det är ingen ände
på det myckna bokskrivandet,
och mycket studerande
gör kroppen trött.
13 (G) Detta är slutsatsen,
när allt blivit hört:
Frukta Gud
och håll hans bud,
det gäller alla människor[j].
14 (H) För Gud ska föra fram
alla gärningar vid domen,
med allt som är fördolt,
både gott och ont.

12 Remember also your Maker while you are young, before the days of trouble come and the years when you will say, “I have no joy in them,” 2 before the sun, the light, the moon and the stars are made dark, and clouds return after the rain. 3 This will be the day when the men who watch the house shake in fear. Strong men bow. Those who grind will stop because they are few. And the eyes of those who look through windows will not see well. 4 The doors on the street will be shut when the sound of the grinding is no more. One will rise up at the sound of a bird. All the daughters of song will sing very low. 5 Men will be afraid of a high place and of fears on the road. Flowers will grow on the almond tree. The grasshopper will pull himself along. And desire will be at an end. For man will go to his home that lasts forever, while people filled with sorrow go about in the street. 6 Remember Him before the silver rope of life is broken and the gold dish is crushed. Remember Him before the pot by the well is broken and the wheel by the water-hole is crushed. 7 Then the dust will return to the earth as it was. And the spirit will return to God Who gave it. 8 “It is of no use,” says the Preacher, “It is all for nothing!”
The Preacher’s Last Words
9 Besides being a wise man, the Preacher also taught the people much learning. He thought about, and looked for, and put together many wise sayings. 10 The Preacher looked to find pleasing words and to write words of truth in the right way.
11 The words of wise men are like a stick. Their gathered sayings are like well-driven nails given by one Shepherd. 12 But more than this, my son, be careful. There is no end to the writing of many books and reading many of them makes the body tired.
13 The last word, after all has been heard, is: Honor God and obey His Laws. This is all that every person must do. 14 For God will judge every act, even everything which is hidden, both good and bad.

12 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;
2 While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:
3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened,
4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low;
5 Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:
6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.
7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
8 Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.
9 And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.
10 The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.
11 The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.
12 And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.
13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

12 Remember(A) your Creator
in the days of your youth,
before the days of trouble(B) come
and the years approach when you will say,
“I find no pleasure in them”—
2 before the sun and the light
and the moon and the stars grow dark,
and the clouds return after the rain;
3 when the keepers of the house tremble,
and the strong men stoop,
when the grinders cease because they are few,
and those looking through the windows grow dim;
4 when the doors to the street are closed
and the sound of grinding fades;
when people rise up at the sound of birds,
but all their songs grow faint;(C)
5 when people are afraid of heights
and of dangers in the streets;
when the almond tree blossoms
and the grasshopper drags itself along
and desire no longer is stirred.
Then people go to their eternal home(D)
and mourners(E) go about the streets.
6 Remember him—before the silver cord is severed,
and the golden bowl is broken;
before the pitcher is shattered at the spring,
and the wheel broken at the well,
7 and the dust returns(F) to the ground it came from,
and the spirit returns to God(G) who gave it.(H)
The Conclusion of the Matter
9 Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs.(K) 10 The Teacher(L) searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true.(M)
11 The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails(N)—given by one shepherd.[b] 12 Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them.
Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body.(O)
