¹⁵Certain, indeed, even through envy and contention, and certain also through good-will, do preach the Christ;

¹⁶the one, indeed, of rivalry the Christ do proclaim, not purely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds,

¹⁷and the other out of love, having known that for defence of the good news I am set:

¹⁸what then? in every way, whether in pretence or in truth, Christ is proclaimed -- and in this I rejoice, yea, and shall rejoice.

¹⁵It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. ¹⁶The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel.^(A) ¹⁷The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition,^(B) not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains.^(C) ¹⁸But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.
