18 What then? If only Christ be preached – whatever the way, whether through opportunism or of a true intent – I rejoice.

19 Yea, and I will rejoice, because I know that these circumstances will bear toward my salvation (through your prayer and ministering of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 20 as I heartily look for), and hope that in nothing I will be ashamed, but that with all confidence, as always in times past, so now Christ may be magnified in my body, whether it be through life or death. 21 For Christ is to me life, and death is to me gain.

22 If it happens that I live in the flesh, it means fruitful work for me, and what to choose I do not know. 23 I am constrained by two things: I desire to be released and to be with Christ, which thing is best of all. 24 Nevertheless, to remain in the flesh is more needful for you. 25 And this I am sure of: that I will abide, and continue with you all for the furtherance and joy of your faith, 26 so that you may more abundantly rejoice in Jesus Christ through me, by my coming to you again.

18 [a]What then: yet Christ is preached all manner ways, whether it be under a [b]pretence, or sincerely: and I therein joy: yea, and will joy.

19 For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and by the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

20 [c]As I fervently look for, and hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all confidence, as always, so now Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life or by death.

21 For Christ is to me both in life and in death advantage.

22 [d]And whether to live in the [e]flesh were profitable for me, and what to choose I know not.

23 For I am distressed between both, desiring to be loosed and to be with Christ, which is best of all.

24 Nevertheless, to abide in the flesh, is more needful for you.

25 And this am I sure of, that I shall abide, and with you all continue, for your furtherance and joy of your faith,

26 That ye may more abundantly rejoice in JESUS CHRIST for me, by my coming to you again.

18 What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice. 19 For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 20 according to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. 21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22 But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not. 23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: 24 nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you. 25 And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith; 26 that your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again.

18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.

Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, 19 for I know that through your prayers(A) and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ(B) what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.[a](C) 20 I eagerly expect(D) and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage(E) so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body,(F) whether by life or by death.(G) 21 For to me, to live is Christ(H) and to die is gain. 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart(I) and be with Christ,(J) which is better by far; 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, 26 so that through my being with you again your boasting in Christ Jesus will abound on account of me.
