Psalm 8^[a]

¹Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name^(A) in all the earth!

You have set your glory^(B)
    in the heavens.^(C)
²Through the praise of children and infants
    you have established a stronghold^(D) against your enemies,
    to silence the foe^(E) and the avenger.
³When I consider your heavens,^(F)
    the work of your fingers,^(G)
the moon and the stars,^(H)
    which you have set in place,
⁴what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
    human beings that you care for them?^[c]^(I)

⁵You have made them^[d] a little lower than the angels^[e]^(J)
    and crowned them^[f] with glory and honor.^(K)
⁶You made them rulers^(L) over the works of your hands;^(M)
    you put everything under their^[g] feet:^(N)
⁷all flocks and herds,^(O)
    and the animals of the wild,^(P)
⁸the birds in the sky,
    and the fish in the sea,^(Q)
    all that swim the paths of the seas.

⁹Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!^(R)

5 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, ²and he began to teach them.

The Beatitudes^(A)

He said:

³“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
    for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.^(B)
⁴Blessed are those who mourn,
    for they will be comforted.^(C)
⁵Blessed are the meek,
    for they will inherit the earth.^(D)
⁶Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    for they will be filled.^(E)
⁷Blessed are the merciful,
    for they will be shown mercy.^(F)
⁸Blessed are the pure in heart,^(G)
    for they will see God.^(H)
⁹Blessed are the peacemakers,^(I)
    for they will be called children of God.^(J)
¹⁰Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,^(K)
    for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.^(L)

¹¹“Blessed are you when people insult you,^(M) persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.^(N) ¹²Rejoice and be glad,^(O) because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.^(P)

Salt and Light

¹³“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.^(Q)

¹⁴“You are the light of the world.^(R) A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. ¹⁵Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.^(S) ¹⁶In the same way, let your light shine before others,^(T) that they may see your good deeds^(U) and glorify^(V) your Father in heaven.

Do Everything Without Grumbling

¹²Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling,^(A) ¹³for it is God who works in you^(B) to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.^(C)

¹⁴Do everything without grumbling^(D) or arguing, ¹⁵so that you may become blameless^(E) and pure, “children of God^(F) without fault in a warped and crooked generation.”^[a]^(G) Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky ¹⁶as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ^(H) that I did not run^(I) or labor in vain.^(J) ¹⁷But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering^(K) on the sacrifice^(L) and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you.^(M) ¹⁸So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.
