Edom Will Be Punished
1 This is the vision of Obadiah. This is what the Lord God says about Edom:
We heard a report from the Lord.
A messenger was sent to the nations.
He said, “Let’s go fight against Edom.”
The Lord Speaks to Edom
2 “Edom, I will make you the smallest nation.
Everyone will hate you very much.
3 Your pride has fooled you.
You live in those caves high on the cliff.
Your home is high in the hills.
So you say to yourself,
‘No one can bring me to the ground.’”
Edom Will Be Brought Low
4 This is what the Lord says:
“Even though you fly high like the eagle
and put your nest among the stars,
I will bring you down from there.
5 You really will be ruined!
Thieves will come to you.
Robbers will come in the night,
and they will take all they want.
When workers gather grapes in your vineyards,
they will leave a few grapes behind.
6 But the enemy will search hard for Esau’s hidden treasures,
and they will find them all.
7 All those who are your friends
will force you out of the land.
Those who were at peace with you will trick you,
and they will defeat you.
The soldiers who fought by your side
are planning a trap for you.
They say, ‘He doesn’t expect a thing!’”
8 The Lord says, “On that day
I will destroy the wise people from Edom.
I will destroy the intelligent people from the mountain of Esau.[a]
9 Teman, your brave soldiers will be afraid.
Everyone will be destroyed from the mountain of Esau.
Many people will be killed.
10 You will be covered with shame
because you were very cruel to your brother Jacob.
So you will be destroyed completely.
11 You joined the enemies of Israel.
Strangers carried Israel’s treasures away.
Foreigners entered Israel’s city gate.
They threw lots to decide what part of Jerusalem they would get.
And you were right there with them, waiting to get your share.
12 You should not have laughed[b]
at your brother’s trouble.
You should not have been happy
when they destroyed Judah.
You should not have bragged[c]
at the time of their trouble.
13 You should not have entered the city gate of my people
and laughed at their problems.
You should not have taken their treasures
in the time of their trouble.
14 You should not have stood where the roads cross
and destroyed those who were trying to escape.
You should not have captured those who escaped alive.
15 The Day of the Lord is coming soon
to all the nations.
And the evil you did to others will happen to you.
The same bad things will fall down on your own head.
16 You spilled[d] blood on my holy mountain,[e]
so other nations will spill your blood.[f]
You will be finished.
It will be as if you never existed.
17 But there will be survivors on Mount Zion.
They will be my special people.
The nation of Jacob[g] will take back
what belongs to it.
18 The family of Jacob will be like a fire.
The nation of Joseph will be like a flame.
But the nation of Esau[h] will be like ashes.
The people of Judah will burn Edom,
and they will destroy it.
Then there will be no survivors in the nation of Esau.”
This will happen because the Lord said it would.
19 Then people from the Negev will live on the mountain of Esau.
And people from the foothills will take the Philistine lands.
They will live in the land of Ephraim and Samaria.
Gilead will belong to Benjamin.
20 People from Israel were forced to leave their homes,
but they will take back the land of Canaan, all the way to Zarephath.
People from Judah were forced to leave Jerusalem and live in Sepharad.[i]
But they will take back the cities of the Negev.
21 The winners[j] will go up on Mount Zion
to rule the people who live on Esau’s mountain.
And the kingdom will belong to the Lord.

1 The vision of Obadiah. Thus says the Lord God concerning [a]Edom: We have heard tidings from the Lord, and an ambassador is sent forth among the nations [saying], Arise, and let us rise up against [Edom] for battle!(A)
2 Behold, I will make you small among the nations [Edom]; you shall be despised exceedingly.(B)
3 The pride of your heart has deceived you, you dweller in the refuges of the rock [Petra, Edom’s capital], whose habitation is high, who says in his heart, Who can bring me down to the ground?
4 Though you mount on high as the eagle and though you set your nest among the stars, I will bring you down from there, says the Lord.
5 If thieves came to you, if robbers by night—how you are brought to nothing!—would they not steal only enough for themselves? If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave some grapes for gleaning? [But this ravaging was done by God, not men.](C)
6 How are the things of Esau [Edom] searched out! How are his hidden treasures sought out!
7 All the men of your confederacy (your allies) have brought you on your way, even to the border; the men who were at peace with you have deceived you and prevailed against you; they who eat your bread have laid a snare under you. There is no understanding [in Edom, or] of it.
8 Will not I in that day, says the Lord, destroy the wise men out of Edom and [men of] understanding out of Mount Esau [Idumea, a mountainous region]?
9 And your mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that everyone from Mount Esau will be cut off by slaughter.
10 For the violence you did against your brother Jacob, shame shall cover you, and you shall be cut off forever.
11 On the day that you stood aloof [from your brother Jacob]—on the day that strangers took captive his forces and carried off his wealth, and foreigners entered into his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem—you were even as one of them.(D)
12 But you should not have gloated over your brother’s day, the day when his misfortune came and he was made a stranger; you should not have rejoiced over the sons of Judah in the day of their ruin; you should not have spoken arrogantly in the day of their distress.
13 You should not have entered the gate of My people in the day of their calamity and ruin; yes, you should not have looked [with delight] on their misery in the day of their calamity and ruin, and not have reached after their army and their possessions in the day of their calamity and ruin.
14 And you should not have stood at the crossway to cut off those of Judah who escaped, neither should you have delivered up those [of Judah] who remained in the day of distress.
15 For the day of the Lord is near upon all the nations. As you have done, it shall be done to you; your dealings will return upon your own head.(E)
16 For as you [Edom] have drunk upon the mountain of My holiness [desecrating it in the wild revelry of the destroyers], so shall all the nations drink continually [in turn, of My wrath]; yes, they shall drink, talk foolishly, and swallow down [the full measure of punishment] and they shall be [destroyed] as though they had not been.(F)
17 But on Mount Zion [in Jerusalem] there shall be deliverance [for those who escape], and it shall be holy; and the house of Jacob shall possess its [own former] possessions.(G)
18 The house of Jacob shall be a fire and the house of Joseph a flame, but the house of Esau shall be stubble; they shall kindle and burn them and consume them, and there shall be no survivor of the house of Esau, for the Lord has spoken it.(H)
19 They of the South (the Negeb) shall possess Mount Esau, and they of the lowland the land of the Philistines; they shall possess the land of Ephraim and the fields of Samaria, and Benjamin shall possess Gilead [across the Jordan River].(I)
20 And the exiles of this host of the children of Israel who are among the Canaanites shall possess [Phoenicia] as far as Zarephath, and the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad shall possess the cities of the South (the Negeb).
21 And deliverers shall go up on Mount Zion to rule and judge Mount Esau, and the kingdom and the kingship shall be the Lord’s.(J)

- Obadiah 1:1 Edom, or Seir, was the country southeast of Judah extending from the Dead Sea to the eastern arm of the Red Sea. It included the city of Petra. The country of Moab formed Edom’s boundary on the north, and the descendants of Esau constituted its population. Edom and Moab have a remarkably prominent place in prophecy as “the scene of the final destruction of Gentile world power in the day of the Lord,” as revealed in the Scripture references accompanying Obad. 1 (which are important for the full, vivid picture of what lies ahead for the nations of the world).

1 The vision of Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord God concerning Edom; We have heard a rumour from the Lord, and an ambassador is sent among the heathen, Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.
2 Behold, I have made thee small among the heathen: thou art greatly despised.
3 The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?
4 Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the Lord.
5 If thieves came to thee, if robbers by night, (how art thou cut off!) would they not have stolen till they had enough? if the grapegatherers came to thee, would they not leave some grapes?
6 How are the things of Esau searched out! how are his hidden things sought up!
7 All the men of thy confederacy have brought thee even to the border: the men that were at peace with thee have deceived thee, and prevailed against thee; they that eat thy bread have laid a wound under thee: there is none understanding in him.
8 Shall I not in that day, saith the Lord, even destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau?
9 And thy mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that every one of the mount of Esau may be cut off by slaughter.
10 For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.
11 In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them.
12 But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.
13 Thou shouldest not have entered into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; yea, thou shouldest not have looked on their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity;
14 Neither shouldest thou have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that did escape; neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his that did remain in the day of distress.
15 For the day of the Lord is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.
16 For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually, yea, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.
17 But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.
18 And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau; for the Lord hath spoken it.
19 And they of the south shall possess the mount of Esau; and they of the plain the Philistines: and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria: and Benjamin shall possess Gilead.
20 And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall possess that of the Canaanites, even unto Zarephath; and the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.
21 And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the Lord's.

Så säger Herren, Herren om Edom:
Ett budskap har vi hört från Herren,
och en budbärare är utsänd bland hednafolken:
"Upp, ja, låt oss stå upp
och strida mot det!"
2 Se, jag har gjort dig ringa bland hednafolken,
djupt föraktad är du.
3 Ditt hjärtas övermod har bedragit dig,
där du sitter bland bergsklyftorna
i din höga boning
och säger i ditt hjärta:
"Vem kan störta mig ner till jorden?"
4 Om du än svävade högt som örnen,
och mitt ibland stjärnorna byggde ditt bo,
så skulle jag ändå störta dig ner därifrån,
säger Herren.
5 Om tjuvar kommer till dig
eller plundrare om natten,
ja, då är det ute med dig!
Skall de inte stjäla till dess att de fått nog?
Om vinbärgare kommer till dig,
skall de då lämna kvar en efterskörd?
6 Hur genomsökt skall inte Esau bli!
Hans dolda skatter skall letas fram!
7 Till gränsen skall de driva dig ut,
alla de som stod i förbund med dig.
De skall bedra dig
och bli dig övermäktiga,
de som du levde i fred med.
De som äter ditt bröd
skall lägga en snara under dig.
Det finns inget förstånd hos dem.
8 Skall jag inte på den dagen,
säger Herren,
förgöra de visa i Edom
och allt förstånd på Esaus berg?
9 Dina hjältar, Teman, skall slås av förfäran,
och var man på Esaus berg
skall bli utrotad och dräpt.
10 För våld mot din broder Jakob
skall du höljas med skam och bli utrotad till evig tid.
11 Den dag du stod på avstånd,
den dag då främlingar förde bort hans rikedomar
och utlänningar drog in genom hans port
och kastade lott om Jerusalem,
då var också du som en av dem.
12 Se inte med lust på din broders dag,
på hans olyckas dag.
Gläd dig inte över Juda barn
på deras undergångs dag.
Spärra inte upp munnen så stort
på nödens dag.
13 Drag inte in genom mitt folks port
på deras ofärds dag.
Se inte, också du, på hans olycka med lust
på hans ofärds dag.
Räck inte ut din hand efter hans rikedomar
på hans ofärds dag.
14 Stå inte vid vägskälet
för att slå ner hans flyktingar
och utlämna inte hans överlevande
på nödens dag.
Herrens dag
15 Ty Herrens dag är nära
för alla hednafolk.
Som du har gjort, så skall det göras mot dig.
Dina gärningar skall komma tillbaka
över ditt eget huvud.
16 Ty som ni har druckit på mitt heliga berg,
skall alla hednafolk få dricka utan uppehåll.
De skall dricka, de skall svälja,
de skall bli som om de aldrig varit till.
17 Men på Sions berg skall finnas en räddad skara,
och den skall vara helig,
och Jakobs hus skall åter råda över sina besittningar.
18 Då skall Jakobs hus bli en eld
och Josefs hus en låga,
och Esaus hus skall vara som strå,
och de skall tända eld på dem och förtära dem.
Ingen skall komma undan av Esaus hus,
ty Herren har talat.
19 Då skall de som bor i Sydlandet ta Esaus berg i besittning. De som bor i Låglandet skall ta filisteernas land. Också Efraims land och Samariens mark skall man ta i besittning. Och Benjamin skall ta Gilead. 20 Och de som förts bort av denna Israels här, de som bor i Kanaan ända till Sarefat, liksom de som förts bort från Jerusalem, de som bor i Sefarad, dessa skall ta Negevs städer i besittning. 21 Frälsare skall dra upp på Sions berg för att döma Esaus berg.
Och riket skall tillhöra Herren.
