4 L'Éternel parla à Moïse et à Aaron, et dit:
2 Compte les fils de Kehath parmi les enfants de Lévi, selon leurs familles, selon les maisons de leurs pères,
3 depuis l'âge de trente ans et au-dessus jusqu'à l'âge de cinquante ans, tous ceux qui sont propres à exercer quelque fonction dans la tente d'assignation.
4 Voici les fonctions des fils de Kehath, dans la tente d'assignation: elles concernent le lieu très saint.
5 Au départ du camp, Aaron et ses fils viendront démonter le voile, et ils en couvriront l'arche du témoignage;
6 ils mettront dessus une couverture de peaux de dauphins, et ils étendront par-dessus un drap entièrement d'étoffe bleue; puis ils placeront les barres de l'arche.
7 Ils étendront un drap bleu sur la table des pains de proposition, et ils mettront dessus les plats, les coupes, les tasses et les calices pour les libations; le pain y sera toujours;
8 ils étendront sur ces choses un drap de cramoisi, et ils l'envelopperont d'une couverture de peaux de dauphins; puis ils placeront les barres de la table.
9 Ils prendront un drap bleu, et ils couvriront le chandelier, ses lampes, ses mouchettes, ses vases à cendre et tous ses vases à l'huile, destinés à son service;
10 ils le mettront, avec tous ses ustensiles, dans une couverture de peaux de dauphins; puis ils le placeront sur le brancard.
11 Ils étendront un drap bleu sur l'autel d'or, et ils l'envelopperont d'une couverture de peaux de dauphins; puis ils placeront les barres de l'autel.
12 Ils prendront tous les ustensiles dont on se sert pour le service dans le sanctuaire, et ils les mettront dans un drap bleu, et ils les envelopperont d'une couverture de peaux de dauphins; puis ils les placeront sur le brancard.
13 Ils ôteront les cendres de l'autel, et ils étendront sur l'autel un drap de pourpre;
14 ils mettront dessus tous les ustensiles destinés à son service, les brasiers, les fourchettes, les pelles, les bassins, tous les ustensiles de l'autel, et ils étendront par-dessus une couverture de peaux de dauphins; puis ils placeront les barres de l'autel.
15 Après qu'Aaron et ses fils auront achevé de couvrir le sanctuaire et tous les ustensiles du sanctuaire, les fils de Kehath viendront, au départ du camp, pour les porter; mais ils ne toucheront point les choses saintes, de peur qu'ils ne meurent. Telles sont les fonctions de porteurs, imposées aux fils de Kehath dans la tente d'assignation.
16 Éléazar, fils du sacrificateur Aaron, aura sous sa surveillance l'huile du chandelier, le parfum odoriférant, l'offrande perpétuelle et l'huile d'onction; il aura sous sa surveillance tout le tabernacle et tout ce qu'il contient, le sanctuaire et ses ustensiles.
17 L'Éternel parla à Moïse et à Aaron, et dit:
18 N'exposez point la race des familles des Kehathites à être retranchée du milieu des Lévites.
19 Faites ceci pour eux, afin qu'ils vivent et qu'ils ne meurent point, quand ils s'approcheront du lieu très saint: Aaron et ses fils viendront, et ils placeront chacun d'eux à son service et à sa charge.
20 Ils n'entreront point pour voir envelopper les choses saintes, de peur qu'ils ne meurent.
21 L'Éternel parla à Moïse, et dit:
22 Compte aussi les fils de Guerschon, selon les maisons de leurs pères, selon leurs familles;
23 tu feras le dénombrement, depuis l'âge de trente ans et au-dessus jusqu'à l'âge de cinquante ans, de tous ceux qui sont propres à exercer quelque fonction dans la tente d'assignation.
24 Voici les fonctions des familles des Guerschonites, le service qu'ils devront faire et ce qu'ils devront porter.
25 Ils porteront les tapis du tabernacle et la tente d'assignation, sa couverture et la couverture de peaux de dauphins qui se met par-dessus, le rideau qui est à l'entrée de la tente d'assignation;
26 les toiles du parvis et le rideau de l'entrée de la porte du parvis, tout autour du tabernacle et de l'autel, leurs cordages et tous les ustensiles qui en dépendent. Et ils feront tout le service qui s'y rapporte.
27 Dans leurs fonctions, les fils des Guerschonites seront sous les ordres d'Aaron et de ses fils, pour tout ce qu'ils porteront et pour tout le service qu'ils devront faire; vous remettrez à leurs soins tout ce qu'ils ont à porter.
28 Telles sont les fonctions des familles des fils des Guerschonites dans la tente d'assignation, et ce qu'ils ont à garder sous la direction d'Ithamar, fils du sacrificateur Aaron.
29 Tu feras le dénombrement des fils de Merari, selon leurs familles, selon les maisons de leurs pères;
30 tu feras le dénombrement, depuis l'âge de trente ans et au-dessus jusqu'à l'âge de cinquante ans, de tous ceux qui sont propres à exercer quelque fonction dans la tente d'assignation.
31 Voici ce qui est remis à leurs soins et ce qu'ils ont à porter, pour toutes leurs fonctions dans la tente d'assignation: les planches du tabernacle, ses barres, ses colonnes, ses bases,
32 les colonnes du parvis formant l'enceinte, leurs bases, leurs pieux, leurs cordages, tous les ustensiles qui en dépendent et tout ce qui est destiné à leur service. Vous désignerez par leurs noms les objets qui sont remis à leurs soins et qu'ils ont à porter.
33 Telles sont les fonctions des familles des fils de Merari, toutes leurs fonctions dans la tente d'assignation, sous la direction d'Ithamar, fils du sacrificateur Aaron.
34 Moïse, Aaron et les princes de l'assemblée firent le dénombrement des fils des Kehathites, selon leurs familles et selon les maisons de leurs pères,

The Kohathites’ duties
4 The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron: 2 Take a census of the Kohathites from among the Levites by their clans and their households, 3 from 30 to 50 years old, all who are eligible for service to do the work of the meeting tent. 4 These are the responsibilities of the Kohathites in the meeting tent: the most holy things.
5 When it’s time to break camp, Aaron and his sons will enter and take down the screening curtain, and they will cover the chest containing the covenant with it. 6 Then they will place a covering of fine leather[a] on it. They will spread a whole cloth of blue over it, and they will set its poles in place. 7 They will spread a blue cloth on the presentation table and place on it the plates, the dishes, the bowls, and the container for the drink offering. The usual bread will be on it. 8 They will spread on them a red cloth, cover it with fine leather, and set its poles in place. 9 They will take a blue cloth and cover the lampstand used for light, its lamps, its extinguishers, its trays, and all the containers for oil that are used in its service. 10 They will place it and its equipment in a covering of fine leather, and then place it on the carrying frame. 11 They will spread a blue cloth on the gold altar and cover it with fine leather. 12 They will take all the service equipment used in the sanctuary, place it in a blue cloth, and cover it with fine leather. Then they will place it on the carrying frame. 13 They will remove the ashes from the altar and spread a purple cloth on it. 14 They will place on it all the equipment used for servicing it, the censers, the meat fork, the shovels, the bowls, all the equipment of the altar. They will spread a covering of fine leather over it and then set its poles in place.
15 Aaron and his sons will finish covering the sanctuary and all the equipment of the sanctuary when it is time to break camp. After that the Kohathites will enter to carry it, but they will not touch the sanctuary, lest they die. These are the objects in the dwelling that the Kohathites are to carry. 16 But Eleazar son of Aaron the priest will have oversight of the oil for lighting, the fragrant incense, the regular grain offering, and the anointing oil, as well as oversight of the entire dwelling and everything in it related to the sanctuary and its equipment.
17 The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron: 18 You must not let the tribe of the Kohathite clans be eliminated from the Levites. 19 This is what you must do for them so that they stay alive and don’t die when they approach the most holy things. Aaron and his sons will enter and assign each of them his work and his load. 20 But they may not enter to look at the sanctuary even for a moment, lest they die.
The Gershonites’ duties
21 The Lord spoke to Moses: 22 Take a census of the Gershonites also, by their households and their clans. 23 You will enroll those from 30 to 50 years old, all who are eligible for service to do work in the dwelling. 24 This is the duty of the Gershonite clans for work and for carrying the load: 25 They will carry the fabric of the dwelling, the meeting tent with its covering, the outer covering of fine leather, the screen for the entrance of the meeting tent, 26 the curtains of the courtyard, the screen of the entrance at the gate of the courtyard that surrounds the meeting tent and the altar, their cords, and all their equipment for their work. They will do everything that needs to be done with these objects.
27 All the duties of the Gershonites for carrying their load and for their work will be at the command of Aaron and his sons. You will assign to them the responsibility to carry their load. 28 This is the work of the Gershonite clans in the dwelling. Their responsibility will be under Ithamar son of Aaron the priest.
The Merarites’ duties
29 You will enroll the Merarites by their clans and their households. 30 You will enroll those from 30 to 50 years old, all who are eligible for service to do work in the meeting tent. 31 This is what they are responsible to carry as their work in the meeting tent: the frames of the meeting tent, its bars, pillars, and bases; 32 the pillars of the courtyard all around, with their bases, pegs, cords, and all the equipment used with them. You will list by name the objects they are required to carry. 33 This is the duty of the Merarite clans for all their work in the meeting tent under the supervision of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest.
Summary of the census
34 So Moses, Aaron, and the chiefs of the community enrolled the Kohathites by their clans and their households, 35 those from 30 to 50 years old who were eligible for work in the meeting tent. 36 Their enrollment by their clans was 2,750. 37 These are the enrolled of the Kohathite clans, all who worked in the meeting tent and whom Moses and Aaron enrolled according to the Lord’s command through Moses.
38 The enrollment of the Gershonites by their clans and their households, 39 those 30 to 50 years old who were eligible for work in the meeting tent: 40 their enrollment by their clans and their households was 2,630. 41 These are the enrolled of the Gershonite clans, all who worked in the meeting tent, and whom Moses and Aaron enrolled according to the Lord’s command.
42 The enrollment of the Merarite clans by their clans and their households, 43 those 30 to 50 years old who were eligible for work in the meeting tent: 44 their enrollment by their clans was 3,200. 45 These are the enrolled of the Merarite clans, whom Moses and Aaron enrolled according to the Lord’s command through Moses.
46 All the enrolled Levites whom Moses, Aaron, and the chiefs of Israel enrolled by their clans and their households, 47 those 30 to 50 years old who were eligible to do the work and to carry the load of the meeting tent: 48 their enrollment was 8,580. 49 Each was enrolled by the Lord’s command through Moses to work and to carry his load. Each was assigned just as the Lord had commanded Moses.

4 “The Kohathites are responsible for the most holy things in the Meeting Tent. 5 When the Israelites are ready to move, Aaron and his sons must go into the Holy Tent, take down the curtain, and cover the Ark of the Agreement with it. 6 Over this they must put a covering made from fine leather, then spread the solid blue cloth over that, and put the poles in place.
7 “Then they must spread a blue cloth over the table for the bread that shows a person is in God’s presence. They must put the plates, pans, bowls, and the jars for drink offerings on the table; they must leave the bread that is always there on the table. 8 Then they must put a red cloth over all of these things, cover everything with fine leather, and put the poles in place.
9 “With a blue cloth they must cover the lampstand, its lamps, its wick trimmers, its trays, and all the jars for the oil used in the lamps. 10 Then they must wrap everything in fine leather and put all these things on a frame for carrying them.
11 “They must spread a blue cloth over the gold altar, cover it with fine leather, and put the poles in place.
12 “They must gather all the things used for serving in the Holy Place and wrap them in a blue cloth. Then they must cover that with fine leather and put these things on a frame for carrying them.
13 “They must clean the ashes off the bronze altar and spread a purple cloth over it. 14 They must gather all the things used for serving at the altar—the pans for carrying the fire, the meat forks, the shovels, and the bowls—and put them on the bronze altar. Then they must spread a covering of fine leather over it and put the poles in place.
15 “When the Israelites are ready to move, and when Aaron and his sons have covered the holy furniture and all the holy things, the Kohathites may go in and carry them away. In this way they won’t touch the holy things and die. It is the Kohathites’ job to carry the things that are in the Meeting Tent.
16 “Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest, will be responsible for the Holy Tent and for everything in it, for all the holy things it has: the oil for the lamp, the sweet-smelling incense, the continual grain offering, and the oil used to appoint priests and things to the Lord’s service.”
17 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 18 “Don’t let the Kohathites be cut off from the Levites. 19 Do this for the Kohathites so that they may go near the Most Holy Place and not die: Aaron and his sons must go in and show each Kohathite what to do and what to carry. 20 The Kohathites must not enter and look at the holy things, even for a second, or they will die.”

They must do everything connected with these things. 27 Aaron and his sons are in charge of what the Gershonites do or carry; you tell them what they are responsible for carrying. 28 This is the work of the Gershonite family group at the Meeting Tent. Ithamar son of Aaron, the priest, will direct their work.

29 “Count the Merarite families and family groups. 30 Count the men from thirty to fifty years old, all who work at the Meeting Tent. 31 It is their job to carry the following as they serve in the Meeting Tent: the frames of the Holy Tent, the crossbars, the posts, and bases, 32 in addition to the posts that go around the courtyard, their bases, tent pegs, ropes, and everything that is used with the poles around the courtyard. Tell each man exactly what to carry. 33 This is the work the Merarite family group will do for the Meeting Tent. Ithamar son of Aaron, the priest, will direct their work.”

34 Moses, Aaron, and the leaders of Israel counted the Kohathites by families and family groups, 35 the men from thirty to fifty years old who were to work at the Meeting Tent. 36 There were 2,750 men in the family groups. 37 This was the total of the Kohath family groups who worked at the Meeting Tent, whom Moses and Aaron counted as the Lord had commanded Moses.
38 Also, the Gershonites were counted by families and family groups, 39 the men from thirty to fifty years old who were given work at the Meeting Tent. 40 The families and family groups had 2,630 men. 41 This was the total of the Gershon family groups who worked at the Meeting Tent, whom Moses and Aaron counted as the Lord had commanded.
42 Also, the men in the families and family groups of the Merari family were counted, 43 the men from thirty to fifty years old who were to work at the Meeting Tent. 44 The family groups had 3,200 men. 45 This was the total of the Merari family groups, whom Moses and Aaron counted as the Lord had commanded Moses.
46 So Moses, Aaron, and the leaders of Israel counted all the Levites by families and family groups. 47 They counted the men from thirty to fifty who were given work at the Meeting Tent and who carried the Tent. 48 The total number of these men was 8,580. 49 Each man was counted as the Lord had commanded Moses; each man was given his work and told what to carry as the Lord had commanded Moses.
