14 Toată adunarea a ridicat glasul şi a început să ţipe. Şi poporul(A) a plâns în noaptea aceea. 2 Toţi copiii(B) lui Israel au cârtit împotriva lui Moise şi Aaron şi toată adunarea le-a zis: „De(C) ce n-om fi murit noi în ţara Egiptului sau de ce n-om fi murit în pustia aceasta? 3 Pentru ce ne duce Domnul în ţara aceasta în care vom cădea ucişi de sabie, iar nevestele noastre şi copilaşii noştri vor fi de jaf? Nu este oare mai bine să ne întoarcem în Egipt?” 4 Şi au zis unul altuia: „Să(D) ne alegem o căpetenie şi să ne(E) întoarcem în Egipt.” 5 Moise(F) şi Aaron au căzut cu faţa la pământ în faţa întregii adunări a copiilor lui Israel care era strânsă laolaltă. 6 Şi, dintre cei ce iscodiseră ţara, Iosua(G), fiul lui Nun, şi Caleb, fiul lui Iefune, şi-au rupt hainele 7 şi au vorbit astfel întregii adunări a copiilor lui Israel: „Ţara pe(H) care am străbătut-o noi ca s-o iscodim este o ţară foarte bună, minunată. 8 Dacă Domnul(I) va fi binevoitor cu noi, ne va duce în ţara aceasta şi ne-o va da: este o ţară(J) în care curge lapte şi miere. 9 Numai nu vă(K) răzvrătiţi împotriva Domnului şi nu(L) vă temeţi de oamenii din ţara aceea, căci îi vom mânca(M). Ei nu mai au niciun sprijin: Domnul(N) este cu noi, nu vă temeţi de ei!” 10 Toată(O) adunarea vorbea să-i ucidă cu pietre, când slava(P) Domnului s-a arătat peste cortul întâlnirii, înaintea tuturor copiilor lui Israel. 11 Şi Domnul a zis lui Moise: „Până(Q) când Mă va nesocoti poporul acesta? Până când nu(R) va crede el în Mine, cu toate minunile pe care le fac în mijlocul lui? 12 De aceea, îl voi lovi cu ciumă şi-l voi nimici, dar pe tine(S) te voi face un neam mai mare şi mai puternic decât el.” 13 Moise(T) a zis Domnului: „Egiptenii vor auzi lucrul acesta, ei, din mijlocul cărora ai scos pe poporul acesta prin puterea Ta. 14 Şi vor spune locuitorilor ţării aceleia. Ei ştiau(U) că Tu, Domnul, eşti în mijlocul poporului acestuia; că Te arătai în chip văzut, Tu, Domnul; că norul(V) Tău stă peste el; că Tu mergi înaintea lui ziua într-un stâlp de nor şi noaptea într-un stâlp de foc. 15 Dacă omori pe poporul acesta ca pe un singur om, neamurile, care au auzit vorbindu-se de Tine, vor zice: 16 ‘Domnul n-avea(W) putere să ducă pe poporul acesta în ţara pe care jurase că i-o va da, de aceea l-a omorât în pustie!’ 17 Acum, să se arate puterea Domnului în mărimea ei, cum ai spus când ai zis: 18 ‘Domnul este încet(X) la mânie şi bogat în bunătate, iartă fărădelegea şi răzvrătirea, dar nu ţine pe cel vinovat drept nevinovat şi pedepseşte(Y) fărădelegea părinţilor în copii până la al treilea şi la al patrulea neam.’ 19 Iartă(Z) dar fărădelegea poporului acestuia(AA), după(AB) mărimea îndurării Tale, cum ai iertat poporului acestuia din Egipt până aici.” 20 Şi Domnul a spus: „Iert, cum ai(AC) cerut. 21 Dar cât este de adevărat că Eu sunt viu şi că slava Domnului va umple tot(AD) pământul, 22 atât este de adevărat că toţi(AE) cei ce au văzut cu ochii lor slava Mea şi minunile pe care le-am făcut în Egipt şi în pustie, şi totuşi M-au ispitit de zece(AF) ori acum şi n-au ascultat glasul Meu, 23 toţi aceia(AG) nu vor vedea ţara pe care am jurat părinţilor lor că le-o voi da, şi anume toţi cei ce M-au nesocotit n-o vor vedea. 24 Iar pentru că robul Meu Caleb(AH) a fost însufleţit de un alt duh şi a urmat în(AI) totul calea Mea, îl voi face să intre în ţara în care s-a dus şi urmaşii lui o vor stăpâni. 25 Amaleciţii şi canaaniţii locuiesc valea aceasta, deci mâine, întoarceţi-vă şi plecaţi(AJ) în pustie, pe calea care duce spre Marea Roşie.” 26 Domnul a vorbit lui Moise şi lui Aaron şi a zis: 27 „Până când(AK) voi lăsa această rea adunare să cârtească împotriva Mea? Am auzit cârtirile(AL) copiilor lui Israel, care cârteau împotriva Mea. 28 Spune-le: ‘Pe(AM) viaţa Mea’, zice Domnul, ‘că vă voi face întocmai(AN) cum aţi vorbit în auzul urechilor Mele! 29 Trupurile voastre moarte vor cădea în pustia aceasta. Voi toţi(AO), a căror numărătoare s-a făcut, numărându-vă de la vârsta de douăzeci de ani în sus, şi care aţi cârtit împotriva Mea 30 nu veţi intra în ţara pe care jurasem că vă voi da-o s-o locuiţi, afară(AP) de Caleb, fiul lui Iefune, şi Iosua, fiul lui Nun. 31 Pe(AQ) copilaşii voştri însă, despre care aţi zis că vor fi de jaf, îi voi face să intre în ea, ca să cunoască ţara pe care aţi(AR) nesocotit-o voi. 32 Iar cât despre voi, trupurile(AS) voastre moarte vor cădea în pustie. 33 Şi copiii voştri vor rătăci(AT) patruzeci(AU) de ani în pustie şi vor ispăşi(AV) astfel păcatele voastre, până ce toate trupurile voastre moarte vor cădea în pustie. 34 După cum(AW) în patruzeci de zile(AX) aţi iscodit ţara, tot aşa, patruzeci de ani veţi purta pedeapsa fărădelegilor voastre, adică un an de fiecare zi, şi veţi şti atunci ce înseamnă să-Mi trag Eu mâna de la voi. 35 Eu(AY), Domnul, am vorbit! În adevăr, aşa voi face acestei rele(AZ) adunări, care s-a unit împotriva Mea; vor fi nimiciţi în pustia aceasta şi în ea vor muri’.” 36 Bărbaţii(BA) pe care îi trimisese Moise să iscodească ţara şi care, la întoarcerea lor, făcuseră ca toată adunarea să cârtească împotriva lui, înnegrind ţara, 37 oamenii aceştia, care înnegriseră ţara, au murit(BB) acolo, înaintea Domnului, loviţi de o moarte năpraznică. 38 Numai Iosua, fiul(BC) lui Nun, şi Caleb, fiul lui Iefune, au rămas cu viaţă dintre oamenii aceia care se duseseră să iscodească ţara.
Neascultarea poporului pedepsit
39 Moise a spus aceste lucruri tuturor copiilor lui Israel, şi poporul a fost într-o mare(BD) jale. 40 S-au sculat dis-de-dimineaţă a doua zi şi s-au suit pe vârful muntelui, zicând: „Iată-ne!(BE) Suntem gata să ne suim în locul de care a vorbit Domnul, căci am păcătuit.” 41 Moise a zis: „Pentru ce călcaţi porunca(BF) Domnului? Nu veţi izbuti. 42 Nu vă suiţi(BG), căci Domnul nu este în mijlocul vostru! Nu căutaţi să fiţi bătuţi de vrăjmaşii voştri. 43 Căci amaleciţii şi canaaniţii sunt înaintea voastră şi veţi cădea ucişi de sabie; odată ce v-aţi abătut(BH) de la Domnul, Domnul nu va fi cu voi.” 44 Ei s-au îndărătnicit(BI) şi s-au suit pe vârful muntelui, dar chivotul legământului şi Moise n-au ieşit din mijlocul taberei. 45 Atunci(BJ) s-au pogorât amaleciţii şi canaaniţii care locuiau pe muntele acela, i-au bătut şi i-au tăiat în bucăţi până la(BK) Horma.

Rebeliunea poporului şi judecata Domnului
14 Atunci toată adunarea a început să ţipe şi în noaptea aceea poporul a plâns. 2 Toţi israeliţii au cârtit împotriva lui Moise şi a lui Aaron; întreaga adunare le-a zis:
– Dacă am fi murit în ţara Egiptului sau dacă am fi murit în pustia aceasta! 3 De ce ne aduce Domnul în ţara aceasta? Ca să cădem ucişi de sabie? Soţiile noastre şi copiii noştri vor ajunge pradă; n-ar fi mai bine să ne întoarcem în Egipt?
4 Şi au zis unul către altul:
– Să ne alegem o căpetenie şi să ne întoarcem în Egipt!
5 Atunci Moise şi Aaron au căzut cu feţele la pământ înaintea întregii adunări a israeliţilor. 6 Iosua, fiul lui Nun, şi Caleb, fiul lui Iefune, care erau dintre cei ce iscodiseră ţara, şi-au sfâşiat hainele 7 şi au zis întregii adunări a israeliţilor:
– Ţara pe care am străbătut-o noi ca să o iscodim este o ţară deosebit de bună. 8 Dacă Domnul Îşi găseşte plăcerea în noi, ne va duce în această ţară şi ne-o va da nouă; este o ţară în care curge lapte şi miere. 9 Dar nu vă răzvrătiţi împotriva Domnului şi nu vă temeţi de poporul din ţară, căci îi vom înghiţi de vii. Ei nu mai au nici o protecţie, iar Domnul este cu noi; nu vă temeţi de ei.
10 Dar întreaga adunare a zis să-i omoare cu pietre. Atunci slava Domnului s-a arătat la Cortul Întâlnirii, înaintea israeliţilor. 11 Domnul i-a zis lui Moise:
– Până când Mă va dispreţui poporul acesta? Până când vor refuza să creadă în Mine, în ciuda tuturor semnelor pe care le-am făcut între ei? 12 Îi voi lovi cu molimă şi-i voi dezmoşteni, iar pe tine te voi face un neam mai mare şi mai puternic decât ei.
13 Dar Moise i-a zis Domnului:
– Egiptenii vor auzi lucrul acesta, căci prin puterea Ta ai scos acest popor din mijlocul lor, 14 şi vor spune locuitorilor acestei ţări. Ei au auzit că Tu, Doamne, eşti în mijlocul acestui popor, că Tu, Doamne, eşti văzut de ei faţă în faţă, că norul Tău stă peste ei şi că mergi înaintea lor în timpul zilei într-un stâlp de nor, iar noaptea într-un stâlp de foc. 15 Dacă omori acest popor ca pe un singur om, atunci neamurile care au auzit despre Tine vor zice: 16 „Domnul n-a putut duce acest popor în ţara pe care a jurat că le-o va da şi i-a omorât în pustie.“ 17 De aceea, Te rog, lasă acum ca puterea Domnului să se arate în măreţia ei, după cum ai promis atunci când ai spus: 18 „Domnul este încet la mânie şi plin de îndurare[a], iertând nedreptatea şi păcatul, dar nu lasă nepedepsit pe cel vinovat, ci pedepseşte nelegiuirea părinţilor în copii şi în copiii copiilor lor până la a treia şi a patra generaţie.[b]“ 19 Te rog, iartă nedreptatea acestui popor, potrivit măreţiei îndurării Tale, aşa cum ai iertat acest popor din Egipt până aici.
20 Domnul a zis:
– I-am iertat aşa cum ai cerut; 21 dar, aşa cum este de adevărat faptul că Eu sunt viu şi că slava Domnului va umple tot pământul, 22 tot aşa nici unul din oamenii care au văzut slava Mea şi semnele pe care le-am făcut în Egipt şi în pustie şi care totuşi M-au ispitit de zece ori[c] până acum şi n-au ascultat glasul Meu, 23 nu vor vedea ţara pe care am jurat că le-o voi da părinţilor lor; nici unul dintre cei care m-au dispreţuit nu o vor vedea. 24 Dar pentru că robul Meu Caleb a fost călăuzit de un alt duh şi M-a urmat pe deplin, îl voi duce în ţara în care a fost, iar urmaşii lui o vor moşteni. 25 Amalekiţii şi canaaniţii locuiesc în vale. De aceea, mâine, întoarceţi-vă şi porniţi spre pustie, pe drumul către Marea Roşie[d].
26 Domnul le-a zis lui Moise şi lui Aaron: 27 „Până când va cârti această adunare rea împotriva Mea? Am auzit cârtirile pe care israeliţii le-au rostit împotriva Mea. 28 De aceea spuneţi-le: «Pe viaţa Mea, zice Domnul, că vă voi face precum aţi vorbit şi voi în auzul Meu: 29 trupurile voastre moarte vor cădea în pustia aceasta; dintre toţi cei de la vârsta de douăzeci de ani în sus care aţi fost număraţi şi înscrişi şi care aţi cârtit împotriva Mea, 30 nici unul nu veţi intra în ţara în care am jurat că vă voi aşeza, în afară de Caleb, fiul lui Iefune, şi Iosua, fiul lui Nun. 31 Pe copilaşii voştri însă, despre care aţi spus că vor fi de jaf, îi voi duce în ţară şi astfel ei vor cunoaşte ţara pe care voi aţi dispreţuit-o. 32 Cât despre voi, trupurile voastre vor cădea în pustia aceasta. 33 Copiii voştri vor fi păstori în pustie timp de patruzeci de ani şi vor purta vina necredincioşiei voastre până când trupurile voastre îşi vor găsi sfârşitul în pustie. 34 După cum timp de patruzeci de zile aţi iscodit ţara, tot aşa, timp de patruzeci de ani – câte un an pentru fiecare zi – vă veţi purta vina şi astfel veţi cunoaşte respingerea Mea.» 35 Eu, Domnul, am vorbit; cu siguranţă aşa îi voi face acestei adunări rele care s-a adunat împotriva Mea. În pustia aceasta îşi va găsi sfârşitul, aici va muri.“
36 Bărbaţii pe care Moise îi trimisese să iscodească ţara şi care, atunci când s-au întors, au făcut toată adunarea să cârtească împotriva lui, aducând un raport nefavorabil despre ţară, 37 deci oamenii aceia care aduseseră un raport rău despre ţară, au murit loviţi de o urgie înaintea Domnului. 38 Numai Iosua, fiul lui Nun, şi Caleb, fiul lui Iefune, au rămas în viaţă dintre bărbaţii care se duseseră să iscodească ţara.
39 Când Moise le-a spus aceste cuvinte tuturor israeliţilor, poporul a fost cuprins de o mare jale. 40 Ei s-au trezit dis-de-dimineaţă şi s-au urcat pe vârful muntelui, zicând:
– Iată-ne! Ne vom duce în locul pe care l-a promis Domnul, căci ne-am dat seama că am păcătuit.
41 Dar Moise le-a zis:
– De ce continuaţi să încălcaţi porunca Domnului? Nu veţi reuşi. 42 Să nu vă urcaţi pentru că Domnul nu este cu voi şi astfel veţi fi învinşi de către duşmanii voştri. 43 Amalekiţii şi canaaniţii sunt înaintea voastră şi veţi cădea loviţi de sabie; fiindcă v-aţi abătut de la Domnul, El nu va fi cu voi.
44 Ei însă au îndrăznit să se urce pe înălţimile muntelui, chiar dacă Moise şi Chivotul Legământului cu Domnul nu au părăsit tabăra. 45 Atunci amalekiţii şi canaaniţii care locuiau în acea regiune muntoasă au venit, i-au învins şi i-au zdrobit până la Horma.

Israel Refuses to Enter Canaan
14 So all the congregation lifted up their voices and cried, and the people (A)wept that night. 2 (B)And all the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron, and the whole congregation said to them, “If only we had died in the land of Egypt! Or if only we had died in this wilderness! 3 Why has the Lord brought us to this land to [a]fall by the sword, that our wives and (C)children should become victims? Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?” 4 So they said to one another, (D)“Let us select a leader and (E)return to Egypt.”
5 Then Moses and Aaron [b]fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
6 But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes; 7 and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: (F)“The land we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land. 8 If the Lord (G)delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, (H)‘a land which flows with milk and honey.’ 9 Only (I)do not rebel against the Lord, (J)nor fear the people of the land, for (K)they[c] are our bread; their protection has departed from them, (L)and the Lord is with us. Do not fear them.”
10 (M)And all the congregation said to stone them with stones. Now (N)the glory of the Lord appeared in the tabernacle of meeting before all the children of Israel.
Moses Intercedes for the People
11 Then the Lord said to Moses: “How long will these people (O)reject[d] Me? And how long will they not (P)believe Me, with all the [e]signs which I have performed among them? 12 I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will (Q)make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”
13 And (R)Moses said to the Lord: (S)“Then the Egyptians will hear it, for by Your might You brought these people up from among them, 14 and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have (T)heard that You, Lord, are among these people; that You, Lord, are seen face to face and Your cloud stands above them, and You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. 15 Now if You kill these people as one man, then the nations which have heard of Your fame will speak, saying, 16 ‘Because the Lord was not (U)able to bring this people to the land which He swore to give them, therefore He killed them in the wilderness.’ 17 And now, I pray, let the power of my Lord be great, just as You have spoken, saying, 18 (V)‘The Lord is longsuffering and abundant in mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He by no means clears the guilty, (W)visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation.’ 19 (X)Pardon the iniquity of this people, I pray, (Y)according to the greatness of Your mercy, just (Z)as You have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.”
20 Then the Lord said: “I have pardoned, (AA)according to your word; 21 but truly, as I live, (AB)all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord— 22 (AC)because all these men who have seen My glory and the signs which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have put Me to the test now (AD)these ten times, and have not heeded My voice, 23 they certainly shall not (AE)see the land of which I [f]swore to their fathers, nor shall any of those who rejected Me see it. 24 But My servant (AF)Caleb, because he has a different spirit in him and (AG)has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land where he went, and his descendants shall inherit it. 25 Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valley; tomorrow turn and (AH)move out into the wilderness by the Way of the Red Sea.”
Death Sentence on the Rebels
26 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, 27 (AI)“How long shall I bear with this evil congregation who complain against Me? (AJ)I have heard the complaints which the children of Israel make against Me. 28 Say to them, (AK)‘As I live,’ says the Lord, ‘just as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will do to you: 29 The carcasses of you who have complained against Me shall fall in this wilderness, (AL)all of you who were numbered, according to your entire number, from twenty years old and above. 30 (AM)Except for Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun, you shall by no means enter the land which I [g]swore I would make you dwell in. 31 (AN)But your little ones, whom you said would be victims, I will bring in, and they shall [h]know the land which (AO)you have despised. 32 But as for you, (AP)your[i] carcasses shall fall in this wilderness. 33 And your sons shall (AQ)be [j]shepherds in the wilderness (AR)forty years, and (AS)bear the brunt of your infidelity, until your carcasses are consumed in the wilderness. 34 (AT)According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, (AU)forty days, for each day you shall bear your [k]guilt one year, namely forty years, (AV)and you shall know My [l]rejection. 35 (AW)I the Lord have spoken this. I will surely do so to all (AX)this evil congregation who are gathered together against Me. In this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.’ ”
36 Now the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation complain against him by bringing a bad report of the land, 37 those very men who brought the evil report about the land, (AY)died by the plague before the Lord. 38 (AZ)But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive, of the men who went to spy out the land.
A Futile Invasion Attempt(BA)
39 Then Moses told these words to all the children of Israel, (BB)and the people mourned greatly. 40 And they rose early in the morning and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, (BC)“Here we are, and we will go up to the place which the Lord has promised, for we have sinned!”
41 And Moses said, “Now why do you [m]transgress the command of the Lord? For this will not succeed. 42 (BD)Do not go up, lest you be defeated by your enemies, for the Lord is not among you. 43 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and you shall fall by the sword; (BE)because you have turned away from the Lord, the Lord will not be with you.”
44 (BF)But they presumed to go up to the mountaintop. Nevertheless, neither the ark of the covenant of the Lord nor Moses departed from the camp. 45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who dwelt in that mountain came down and attacked them, and drove them back as far as (BG)Hormah.

3 And wherefore hath the Lord brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?
4 And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.
5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
6 And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes:
7 And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land.
8 If the Lord delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.
9 Only rebel not ye against the Lord, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the Lord is with us: fear them not.
10 But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the Lord appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.
11 And the Lord said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?
12 I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.
13 And Moses said unto the Lord, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;)
14 And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou Lord art among this people, that thou Lord art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.
15 Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying,
16 Because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness.
17 And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying,
18 The Lord is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.
19 Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.
20 And the Lord said, I have pardoned according to thy word:
21 But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord.
22 Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;
23 Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it:
24 But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.
25 (Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) Tomorrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.
26 And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
27 How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.
28 Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the Lord, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:
29 Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward which have murmured against me.
30 Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
31 But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.
32 But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness.
33 And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.
34 After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.
35 I the Lord have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.
36 And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land,
37 Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the Lord.
38 But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still.
39 And Moses told these sayings unto all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.
40 And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the Lord hath promised: for we have sinned.
41 And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the Lord? but it shall not prosper.
42 Go not up, for the Lord is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies.
43 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the Lord, therefore the Lord will not be with you.
44 But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.
45 Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.
