The Second Census

26 After the plague^(A) the Lord said to Moses and Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest, ²“Take a census^(B) of the whole Israelite community by families—all those twenty years old or more who are able to serve in the army^(C) of Israel.” ³So on the plains of Moab^(D) by the Jordan across from Jericho,^(E) Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them and said, ⁴“Take a census of the men twenty years old or more, as the Lord commanded Moses.”

These were the Israelites who came out of Egypt:^(F)

⁵The descendants of Reuben,^(G) the firstborn son of Israel, were:

through Hanok,^(H) the Hanokite clan;

through Pallu,^(I) the Palluite clan;

⁶through Hezron,^(J) the Hezronite clan;

through Karmi,^(K) the Karmite clan.

⁷These were the clans of Reuben; those numbered were 43,730.

⁸The son of Pallu was Eliab, ⁹and the sons of Eliab^(L) were Nemuel, Dathan and Abiram. The same Dathan and Abiram were the community^(M) officials who rebelled against Moses and Aaron and were among Korah’s followers when they rebelled against the Lord.^(N) ¹⁰The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them^(O) along with Korah, whose followers died when the fire devoured the 250 men.^(P) And they served as a warning sign.^(Q) ¹¹The line of Korah,^(R) however, did not die out.^(S)

¹²The descendants of Simeon by their clans were:

through Nemuel,^(T) the Nemuelite clan;

through Jamin,^(U) the Jaminite clan;

through Jakin, the Jakinite clan;

¹³through Zerah,^(V) the Zerahite clan;

through Shaul, the Shaulite clan.

¹⁴These were the clans of Simeon;^(W) those numbered were 22,200.^(X)

¹⁵The descendants of Gad by their clans were:

through Zephon,^(Y) the Zephonite clan;

through Haggi, the Haggite clan;

through Shuni, the Shunite clan;

¹⁶through Ozni, the Oznite clan;

through Eri, the Erite clan;

¹⁷through Arodi,^[a] the Arodite clan;

through Areli, the Arelite clan.

¹⁸These were the clans of Gad;^(Z) those numbered were 40,500.

¹⁹Er^(AA) and Onan^(AB) were sons of Judah, but they died^(AC) in Canaan.

²⁰The descendants of Judah by their clans were:

through Shelah,^(AD) the Shelanite clan;

through Perez,^(AE) the Perezite clan;

through Zerah, the Zerahite clan.^(AF)

²¹The descendants of Perez^(AG) were:

through Hezron,^(AH) the Hezronite clan;

through Hamul, the Hamulite clan.

²²These were the clans of Judah;^(AI) those numbered were 76,500.

²³The descendants of Issachar by their clans were:

through Tola,^(AJ) the Tolaite clan;

through Puah, the Puite^[b] clan;

²⁴through Jashub,^(AK) the Jashubite clan;

through Shimron, the Shimronite clan.

²⁵These were the clans of Issachar;^(AL) those numbered were 64,300.

²⁶The descendants of Zebulun^(AM) by their clans were:

through Sered, the Seredite clan;

through Elon, the Elonite clan;

through Jahleel, the Jahleelite clan.

²⁷These were the clans of Zebulun;^(AN) those numbered were 60,500.

²⁸The descendants of Joseph^(AO) by their clans through Manasseh and Ephraim^(AP) were:

²⁹The descendants of Manasseh:^(AQ)

through Makir,^(AR) the Makirite clan (Makir was the father of Gilead^(AS));

through Gilead, the Gileadite clan.

³⁰These were the descendants of Gilead:^(AT)

through Iezer,^(AU) the Iezerite clan;

through Helek, the Helekite clan;

³¹through Asriel, the Asrielite clan;

through Shechem, the Shechemite clan;

³²through Shemida, the Shemidaite clan;

through Hepher, the Hepherite clan.

³³(Zelophehad^(AV) son of Hepher had no sons;^(AW) he had only daughters, whose names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah.)^(AX)

³⁴These were the clans of Manasseh; those numbered were 52,700.^(AY)

³⁵These were the descendants of Ephraim^(AZ) by their clans:

through Shuthelah, the Shuthelahite clan;

through Beker, the Bekerite clan;

through Tahan, the Tahanite clan.

³⁶These were the descendants of Shuthelah:

through Eran, the Eranite clan.

³⁷These were the clans of Ephraim;^(BA) those numbered were 32,500.

These were the descendants of Joseph by their clans.

³⁸The descendants of Benjamin^(BB) by their clans were:

through Bela, the Belaite clan;

through Ashbel, the Ashbelite clan;

through Ahiram, the Ahiramite clan;

³⁹through Shupham,^[c] the Shuphamite clan;

through Hupham, the Huphamite clan.

⁴⁰The descendants of Bela through Ard^(BC) and Naaman were:

through Ard,^[d] the Ardite clan;

through Naaman, the Naamite clan.

⁴¹These were the clans of Benjamin;^(BD) those numbered were 45,600.

⁴²These were the descendants of Dan^(BE) by their clans:^(BF)

through Shuham,^(BG) the Shuhamite clan.

These were the clans of Dan: ⁴³All of them were Shuhamite clans; and those numbered were 64,400.

⁴⁴The descendants of Asher^(BH) by their clans were:

through Imnah, the Imnite clan;

through Ishvi, the Ishvite clan;

through Beriah, the Beriite clan;

⁴⁵and through the descendants of Beriah:

through Heber, the Heberite clan;

through Malkiel, the Malkielite clan.

⁴⁶(Asher had a daughter named Serah.)

⁴⁷These were the clans of Asher;^(BI) those numbered were 53,400.

⁴⁸The descendants of Naphtali^(BJ) by their clans were:

through Jahzeel, the Jahzeelite clan;

through Guni, the Gunite clan;

⁴⁹through Jezer, the Jezerite clan;

through Shillem, the Shillemite clan.

⁵⁰These were the clans of Naphtali;^(BK) those numbered were 45,400.^(BL)

⁵¹The total number of the men of Israel was 601,730.^(BM)

⁵²The Lord said to Moses, ⁵³“The land is to be allotted to them as an inheritance based on the number of names.^(BN) ⁵⁴To a larger group give a larger inheritance, and to a smaller group a smaller one; each is to receive its inheritance according to the number^(BO) of those listed.^(BP) ⁵⁵Be sure that the land is distributed by lot.^(BQ) What each group inherits will be according to the names for its ancestral tribe. ⁵⁶Each inheritance is to be distributed by lot among the larger and smaller groups.”

⁵⁷These were the Levites^(BR) who were counted by their clans:

through Gershon, the Gershonite clan;

through Kohath, the Kohathite clan;

through Merari, the Merarite clan.

⁵⁸These also were Levite clans:

the Libnite clan,

the Hebronite clan,

the Mahlite clan,

the Mushite clan,

the Korahite clan.

(Kohath was the forefather of Amram;^(BS) ⁵⁹the name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed,^(BT) a descendant of Levi, who was born to the Levites^[e] in Egypt. To Amram she bore Aaron, Moses^(BU) and their sister^(BV) Miriam.^(BW) ⁶⁰Aaron was the father of Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.^(BX) ⁶¹But Nadab and Abihu^(BY) died when they made an offering before the Lord with unauthorized fire.)^(BZ)

⁶²All the male Levites a month old or more numbered 23,000.^(CA) They were not counted^(CB) along with the other Israelites because they received no inheritance^(CC) among them.^(CD)

⁶³These are the ones counted^(CE) by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab^(CF) by the Jordan across from Jericho.^(CG) ⁶⁴Not one of them was among those counted^(CH) by Moses and Aaron^(CI) the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Desert of Sinai. ⁶⁵For the Lord had told those Israelites they would surely die in the wilderness,^(CJ) and not one of them was left except Caleb^(CK) son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.^(CL)

Zelophehad’s Daughters^(CM)

27 The daughters of Zelophehad^(CN) son of Hepher,^(CO) the son of Gilead,^(CP) the son of Makir,^(CQ) the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. They came forward ²and stood before Moses,^(CR) Eleazar the priest, the leaders^(CS) and the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting^(CT) and said, ³“Our father died in the wilderness.^(CU) He was not among Korah’s followers, who banded together against the Lord,^(CV) but he died for his own sin and left no sons.^(CW) ⁴Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.”

⁵So Moses brought their case^(CX) before the Lord,^(CY) ⁶and the Lord said to him, ⁷“What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance^(CZ) among their father’s relatives and give their father’s inheritance to them.^(DA)

⁸“Say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter. ⁹If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. ¹⁰If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. ¹¹If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to have the force of law^(DB) for the Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.’”

Joshua to Succeed Moses

¹²Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up this mountain^(DC) in the Abarim Range^(DD) and see the land^(DE) I have given the Israelites.^(DF) ¹³After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people,^(DG) as your brother Aaron^(DH) was, ¹⁴for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin,^(DI) both of you disobeyed my command to honor me as holy^(DJ) before their eyes.” (These were the waters of Meribah^(DK) Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin.)

¹⁵Moses said to the Lord, ¹⁶“May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things,^(DL) appoint someone over this community ¹⁷to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”^(DM)

¹⁸So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership,^[f]^(DN) and lay your hand on him.^(DO) ¹⁹Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him^(DP) in their presence.^(DQ) ²⁰Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him.^(DR) ²¹He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring^(DS) of the Urim^(DT) before the Lord. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in.”

²²Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly. ²³Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him,^(DU) as the Lord instructed through Moses.

Psalm 89^[a]

A maskil^[b] of Ethan the Ezrahite.

¹I will sing^(A) of the Lord’s great love forever;
    with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known^(B)
    through all generations.
²I will declare that your love stands firm forever,
    that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.^(C)
³You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one,
    I have sworn to David my servant,
⁴‘I will establish your line forever
    and make your throne firm through all generations.’”^[c]^(D)

⁵The heavens^(E) praise your wonders, Lord,
    your faithfulness too, in the assembly^(F) of the holy ones.
⁶For who in the skies above can compare with the Lord?
    Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings?^(G)
⁷In the council^(H) of the holy ones^(I) God is greatly feared;
    he is more awesome than all who surround him.^(J)
⁸Who is like you,^(K) Lord God Almighty?^(L)
    You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.

⁹You rule over the surging sea;
    when its waves mount up, you still them.^(M)
¹⁰You crushed Rahab^(N) like one of the slain;
    with your strong arm you scattered^(O) your enemies.
¹¹The heavens are yours,^(P) and yours also the earth;^(Q)
    you founded the world and all that is in it.^(R)
¹²You created the north and the south;
    Tabor^(S) and Hermon^(T) sing for joy^(U) at your name.
¹³Your arm is endowed with power;
    your hand is strong, your right hand exalted.^(V)

¹⁴Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;^(W)
    love and faithfulness go before you.^(X)
¹⁵Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you,
    who walk^(Y) in the light^(Z) of your presence, Lord.
¹⁶They rejoice in your name^(AA) all day long;
    they celebrate your righteousness.
¹⁷For you are their glory and strength,^(AB)
    and by your favor you exalt our horn.^[d]^(AC)
¹⁸Indeed, our shield^[e]^(AD) belongs to the Lord,

¹⁹Once you spoke in a vision,
    to your faithful people you said:
“I have bestowed strength on a warrior;
    I have raised up a young man from among the people.
²⁰I have found David^(AF) my servant;^(AG)
    with my sacred oil^(AH) I have anointed^(AI) him.
²¹My hand will sustain him;
    surely my arm will strengthen him.^(AJ)
²²The enemy will not get the better of him;^(AK)
    the wicked will not oppress^(AL) him.
²³I will crush his foes before him^(AM)
    and strike down his adversaries.^(AN)
²⁴My faithful love will be with him,^(AO)
    and through my name his horn^[f] will be exalted.
²⁵I will set his hand over the sea,

²⁶He will call out to me, ‘You are my Father,^(AQ)

³⁰“If his sons forsake my law
    and do not follow my statutes,
³¹if they violate my decrees
    and fail to keep my commands,
³²I will punish their sin with the rod,
    their iniquity with flogging;^(AY)
³³but I will not take my love from him,^(AZ)
    nor will I ever betray my faithfulness.
³⁴I will not violate my covenant
    or alter what my lips have uttered.^(BA)
³⁵Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness—
    and I will not lie to David—
³⁶that his line will continue forever
    and his throne endure before me like the sun;^(BB)
³⁷it will be established forever like the moon,
    the faithful witness in the sky.”^(BC)

³⁸But you have rejected,^(BD) you have spurned,
    you have been very angry with your anointed one.
³⁹You have renounced the covenant with your servant
    and have defiled his crown in the dust.^(BE)
⁴⁰You have broken through all his walls^(BF)
    and reduced his strongholds^(BG) to ruins.
⁴¹All who pass by have plundered^(BH) him;
    he has become the scorn of his neighbors.^(BI)
⁴²You have exalted the right hand of his foes;
    you have made all his enemies rejoice.^(BJ)
⁴³Indeed, you have turned back the edge of his sword
    and have not supported him in battle.^(BK)
⁴⁴You have put an end to his splendor
    and cast his throne to the ground.
⁴⁵You have cut short^(BL) the days of his youth;
    you have covered him with a mantle of shame.^(BM)

⁴⁶How long, Lord? Will you hide yourself forever?
    How long will your wrath burn like fire?^(BN)
⁴⁷Remember how fleeting is my life.^(BO)
    For what futility you have created all humanity!
⁴⁸Who can live and not see death,
    or who can escape the power of the grave?^(BP)
⁴⁹Lord, where is your former great love,
    which in your faithfulness you swore to David?
⁵⁰Remember, Lord, how your servant has^[g] been mocked,^(BQ)
    how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the nations,
⁵¹the taunts with which your enemies, Lord, have mocked,
    with which they have mocked every step of your anointed one.^(BR)

⁵²Praise be to the Lord forever!
