22 Poi gli Israeliti partirono e si accamparono nelle steppe di Moab, oltre il Giordano verso Gerico.
Il re di Moab fa appello a Balaam
2 Or Balak, figlio di Zippor, vide quanto Israele aveva fatto agli Amorrei 3 e Moab ebbe grande paura di questo popolo, che era così numeroso; Moab fu preso da spavento di fronte agli Israeliti. 4 Quindi Moab disse agli anziani di Madian: «Ora questa moltitudine divorerà quanto è intorno a noi, come il bue divora l'erba dei campi».
Balak, figlio di Zippor, era in quel tempo re di Moab. 5 Egli mandò messaggeri a Balaam, figlio di Beor, a Petor che sta sul fiume, nel paese dei figli di Amau, per chiamarlo e dirgli: «Ecco un popolo è uscito dall'Egitto; ricopre la terra e si è stabilito di fronte a me; 6 ora dunque, vieni e maledicimi questo popolo; poiché è troppo potente per me; forse così riusciremo a sconfiggerlo e potrò scacciarlo dal paese; so infatti che chi tu benedici è benedetto e chi tu maledici è maledetto».
7 Gli anziani di Moab e gli anziani di Madian partirono portando in mano il salario dell'indovino; arrivati da Balaam, gli riferirono le parole di Balak. 8 Balaam disse loro: «Alloggiate qui stanotte e vi darò la risposta secondo quanto mi dirà il Signore». I capi di Moab si fermarono da Balaam.
9 Ora Dio venne a Balaam e gli disse: «Chi sono questi uomini che stanno da te?». 10 Balaam rispose a Dio: «Balak, figlio di Zippor, re di Moab, mi ha mandato a dire: 11 Ecco, il popolo che è uscito dall'Egitto, ricopre la terra; ora vieni a maledirmelo; forse riuscirò così a batterlo e potrò scacciarlo». 12 Dio disse a Balaam: «Tu non andrai con loro, non maledirai quel popolo, perché esso è benedetto».
13 Balaam si alzò la mattina e disse ai capi di Balak: «Andatevene al vostro paese, perché il Signore si è rifiutato di lasciarmi venire con voi». 14 I capi di Moab si alzarono, tornarono da Balak e dissero: «Balaam si è rifiutato di venire con noi».
15 Allora Balak mandò di nuovo i capi, in maggior numero e più influenti di quelli di prima. 16 Vennero da Balaam e gli dissero: «Così dice Balak, figlio di Zippor: Nulla ti trattenga dal venire da me; 17 perché io ti colmerò di onori e farò quanto mi dirai; vieni dunque e maledicimi questo popolo». 18 Ma Balaam rispose e disse ai ministri di Balak: «Quand'anche Balak mi desse la sua casa piena d'argento e oro, non potrei trasgredire l'ordine del Signore, mio Dio, per fare cosa piccola o grande. 19 Nondimeno, trattenetevi qui anche voi stanotte, perché io sappia ciò che il Signore mi dirà ancora».
20 Dio venne la notte a Balaam e gli disse: «Se quegli uomini sono venuti a chiamarti, alzati e và con loro; ma farai ciò che io ti dirò». 21 Balaam quindi si alzò la mattina, sellò l'asina e se ne andò con i capi di Moab.
L'asina di Balaam
22 Ma l'ira di Dio si accese perché egli era andato; l'angelo del Signore si pose sulla strada per ostacolarlo. Egli cavalcava l'asina e aveva con sé due servitori. 23 L'asina, vedendo l'angelo del Signore che stava sulla strada con la spada sguainata in mano, deviò dalla strada e cominciò ad andare per i campi. Balaam percosse l'asina per rimetterla sulla strada. 24 Allora l'angelo del Signore si fermò in un sentiero infossato tra le vigne, che aveva un muro di qua e un muro di là. 25 L'asina vide l'angelo del Signore, si serrò al muro e strinse il piede di Balaam contro il muro e Balaam la percosse di nuovo. 26 L'angelo del Signore passò di nuovo più avanti e si fermò in un luogo stretto, tanto stretto che non vi era modo di ritirarsi né a destra, né a sinistra. 27 L'asina vide l'angelo del Signore e si accovacciò sotto Balaam; l'ira di Balaam si accese ed egli percosse l'asina con il bastone. 28 Allora il Signore aprì la bocca all'asina ed essa disse a Balaam: «Che ti ho fatto perché tu mi percuota gia per la terza volta?». 29 Balaam rispose all'asina: «Perché ti sei beffata di me! Se avessi una spada in mano, ti ammazzerei subito». 30 L'asina disse a Balaam: «Non sono io la tua asina sulla quale hai sempre cavalcato fino ad oggi? Sono forse abituata ad agire così?». Ed egli rispose: «No». 31 Allora il Signore aprì gli occhi a Balaam ed egli vide l'angelo del Signore, che stava sulla strada con la spada sguainata. Balaam si inginocchiò e si prostrò con la faccia a terra. 32 L'angelo del Signore gli disse: «Perché hai percosso la tua asina gia tre volte? Ecco io sono uscito a ostacolarti il cammino, perché il cammino davanti a me va in precipizio. 33 Tre volte l'asina mi ha visto ed è uscita di strada davanti a me; se non fosse uscita di strada davanti a me, certo io avrei gia ucciso te e lasciato in vita lei». 34 Allora Balaam disse all'angelo del Signore: «Io ho peccato, perché non sapevo che tu ti fossi posto contro di me sul cammino; ora se questo ti dispiace, io tornerò indietro». 35 L'angelo del Signore disse a Balaam: «Và pure con quegli uomini; ma dirai soltanto quello che io ti dirò». Balaam andò con i capi di Balak.
Balaam e Balak
36 Quando Balak udì che Balaam arrivava, gli andò incontro a Ir-Moab che è sul confine dell'Arnon, all'estremità del confine. 37 Balak disse a Balaam: «Non ti avevo forse mandato a chiamare con insistenza? Perché non sei venuto da me? Non sono forse in grado di farti onore?». 38 Balaam rispose a Balak: «Ecco, sono venuto da te; ma ora posso forse dire qualsiasi cosa? La parola che Dio mi metterà in bocca, quella dirò». 39 Balaam andò con Balak e giunsero a Kiriat-Cusot. 40 Balak immolò bestiame grosso e minuto e mandò parte della carne a Balaam e ai capi che erano con lui.
41 La mattina Balak prese Balaam e lo fece salire a Bamot-Baal, da dove si vedeva un'estremità dell'accampamento del popolo.

Balak Summons Balaam
22 Then the Israelites traveled to the plains of Moab(A) and camped along the Jordan(B) across from Jericho.(C)
2 Now Balak son of Zippor(D) saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites, 3 and Moab was terrified because there were so many people. Indeed, Moab was filled with dread(E) because of the Israelites.
4 The Moabites(F) said to the elders of Midian,(G) “This horde is going to lick up everything(H) around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.(I)”
So Balak son of Zippor, who was king of Moab at that time, 5 sent messengers to summon Balaam son of Beor,(J) who was at Pethor, near the Euphrates River,(K) in his native land. Balak said:
“A people has come out of Egypt;(L) they cover the face of the land and have settled next to me. 6 Now come and put a curse(M) on these people, because they are too powerful for me. Perhaps then I will be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land.(N) For I know that whoever you bless is blessed, and whoever you curse is cursed.”
7 The elders of Moab and Midian left, taking with them the fee for divination.(O) When they came to Balaam, they told him what Balak had said.
8 “Spend the night here,” Balaam said to them, “and I will report back to you with the answer the Lord gives me.(P)” So the Moabite officials stayed with him.
9 God came to Balaam(Q) and asked,(R) “Who are these men with you?”
10 Balaam said to God, “Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent me this message: 11 ‘A people that has come out of Egypt covers the face of the land. Now come and put a curse on them for me. Perhaps then I will be able to fight them and drive them away.’”
12 But God said to Balaam, “Do not go with them. You must not put a curse on those people, because they are blessed.(S)”
13 The next morning Balaam got up and said to Balak’s officials, “Go back to your own country, for the Lord has refused to let me go with you.”
14 So the Moabite officials returned to Balak and said, “Balaam refused to come with us.”
15 Then Balak sent other officials, more numerous and more distinguished than the first. 16 They came to Balaam and said:
“This is what Balak son of Zippor says: Do not let anything keep you from coming to me, 17 because I will reward you handsomely(T) and do whatever you say. Come and put a curse(U) on these people for me.”
18 But Balaam answered them, “Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything great or small to go beyond the command of the Lord my God.(V) 19 Now spend the night here so that I can find out what else the Lord will tell me.(W)”
20 That night God came to Balaam(X) and said, “Since these men have come to summon you, go with them, but do only what I tell you.”(Y)
Balaam’s Donkey
21 Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey and went with the Moabite officials. 22 But God was very angry(Z) when he went, and the angel of the Lord(AA) stood in the road to oppose him. Balaam was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him. 23 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with a drawn sword(AB) in his hand, it turned off the road into a field. Balaam beat it(AC) to get it back on the road.
24 Then the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path through the vineyards, with walls on both sides. 25 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it pressed close to the wall, crushing Balaam’s foot against it. So he beat the donkey again.
26 Then the angel of the Lord moved on ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn, either to the right or to the left. 27 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it lay down under Balaam, and he was angry(AD) and beat it with his staff. 28 Then the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth,(AE) and it said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?(AF)”
29 Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made a fool of me! If only I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.(AG)”
30 The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?”
“No,” he said.
31 Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes,(AH) and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with his sword drawn. So he bowed low and fell facedown.
32 The angel of the Lord asked him, “Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? I have come here to oppose you because your path is a reckless one before me.[a] 33 The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If it had not turned away, I would certainly have killed you by now,(AI) but I would have spared it.”
34 Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, “I have sinned.(AJ) I did not realize you were standing in the road to oppose me. Now if you are displeased, I will go back.”
35 The angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but speak only what I tell you.” So Balaam went with Balak’s officials.
36 When Balak(AK) heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at the Moabite town on the Arnon(AL) border, at the edge of his territory. 37 Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not send you an urgent summons? Why didn’t you come to me? Am I really not able to reward you?”
38 “Well, I have come to you now,” Balaam replied. “But I can’t say whatever I please. I must speak only what God puts in my mouth.”(AM)
39 Then Balaam went with Balak to Kiriath Huzoth. 40 Balak sacrificed cattle and sheep,(AN) and gave some to Balaam and the officials who were with him. 41 The next morning Balak took Balaam up to Bamoth Baal,(AO) and from there he could see the outskirts of the Israelite camp.(AP)

22 Los israelitas siguieron su camino y acamparon en las llanuras de Moab, al oriente del río Jordán, frente a Jericó.
2 Balac, hijo de Sipor, se fijó en lo que los israelitas habían hecho con los amorreos. 3 También la gente de Moab se llenó de miedo al ver que los israelitas eran tan numerosos. 4 Entonces dijo la gente de Moab a los ancianos de Madián: «Toda esta gente va a acabar con nuestra tierra, como un buey acaba con el pasto del campo.»
Por aquel tiempo Balac era rey de Moab, 5 y mandó llamar a Balaam, hijo de Beor, quien se encontraba en Petor, junto al río Éufrates, en el país de Amav. Balac ordenó a sus mensajeros que dijeran a Balaam: «De Egipto ha venido un pueblo que se ha extendido por todo el país, y ahora se ha establecido delante de mí. 6 Ven en seguida y maldice a este pueblo por mí, pues es más fuerte que nosotros. Quizá así pueda yo derrotarlos y expulsarlos del país. Yo sé que tus bendiciones y tus maldiciones siempre se cumplen.»
7 Los ancianos de Moab y de Madián se fueron con dinero en la mano para pagar las maldiciones, y al llegar a donde estaba Balaam le dieron el mensaje de parte de Balac. 8 Y Balaam les dijo:
—Quédense aquí esta noche, y yo les responderé según lo que el Señor me ordene.
Y los ancianos de Moab se quedaron con él. 9 Pero Dios se le apareció a Balaam, y le preguntó:
—¿Quiénes son esos hombres que están contigo?
10 Balaam le respondió:
—Balac, hijo de Sipor, que es rey de Moab, los envió a que me dijeran 11 que un pueblo ha salido de Egipto, y que se ha extendido por todo el país. Balac quiere que yo vaya en seguida a maldecirlos, para ver si así puede derrotarlos y echarlos fuera de su territorio.
12 Entonces Dios le dijo a Balaam:
—No vayas con ellos ni maldigas a ese pueblo, porque a ese pueblo lo he bendecido yo.
13 Al día siguiente Balaam se levantó y les dijo a los jefes que había enviado Balac:
—Regresen a su tierra. El Señor no me permite ir con ustedes.
14 Los jefes de Moab regresaron a donde estaba Balac, y le dijeron:
—Balaam no quiso venir con nosotros.
15 Pero Balac insistió y volvió a enviar otros jefes, esta vez en mayor número y de más importancia que los primeros. 16 Ellos fueron a ver a Balaam y le dijeron:
—Balac, hijo de Sipor, te manda a decir: “Por favor, no te niegues a venir. 17 Yo te daré los más grandes honores, y haré todo lo que me pidas; pero ven y hazme el favor de maldecir a este pueblo.”
18 Pero Balaam les respondió:
—Aunque Balac me diera todo el oro y la plata que caben en su palacio, yo no podría hacer nada, ni grande ni pequeño, que fuera contra las órdenes del Señor mi Dios. 19 Sin embargo, quédense ustedes aquí también esta noche, y veré qué me dice esta vez el Señor.
20 Por la noche, Dios se le apareció a Balaam y le dijo:
—Si esos hombres han venido por ti, levántate y vete con ellos, pero tendrás que hacer solamente lo que yo te diga.
Balaam se encuentra con el ángel del Señor
21 Balaam se levantó al día siguiente, ensilló su asna y se fue con los jefes moabitas. 22 Balaam iba montado en su asna, y lo acompañaban dos criados suyos.
Pero Dios se enojó con él porque se había ido, y el ángel del Señor se interpuso en su camino para cerrarle el paso. 23 Cuando el asna vio que el ángel del Señor estaba en medio del camino con una espada en la mano, se apartó del camino y se fue por el campo; pero Balaam la golpeó para hacerla volver al camino. 24 Luego el ángel del Señor se paró en un lugar estrecho, donde el camino pasaba entre viñedos y tenía paredes de piedra a los dos lados. 25 Cuando el asna vio al ángel del Señor, se recostó contra una de las paredes, oprimiéndole la pierna a Balaam. Entonces Balaam le volvió a pegar. 26 Pero el ángel del Señor se adelantó a ellos y se paró en un lugar muy estrecho, donde no podía uno desviarse a ningún lado. 27 Cuando el asna vio al ángel del Señor, se echó al suelo. Entonces Balaam se enojó y la azotó con una vara. 28 En ese momento el Señor hizo que el asna hablara, y que le dijera a Balaam:
—¿Qué te he hecho? Con ésta van tres veces que me pegas.
29 —Te estás burlando de mí —le respondió Balaam—. Si tuviera a la mano un cuchillo, ahora mismo te mataría.
30 Pero el asna le dijo:
—Yo soy el asna que tú has montado toda tu vida, y bien sabes que nunca me he portado así contigo.
—Es verdad —respondió Balaam.
31 Entonces el Señor hizo que Balaam pudiera ver a su ángel, que estaba en medio del camino con una espada en la mano. Balaam se inclinó hasta tocar el suelo con la frente, 32 pero el ángel del Señor le dijo:
—¿Por qué le pegaste tres veces a tu asna? Yo soy quien ha venido a cerrarte el paso, porque tu viaje me disgusta. 33 El asna me vio, y me esquivó las tres veces. Si no me hubiera esquivado, ya te hubiera yo matado, aunque a ella la habría dejado con vida.
34 Y Balaam respondió al ángel del Señor:
—He pecado, pues no sabía que tú estabas allí, cerrándome el camino. Si te parece mal que yo vaya, regresaré.
35 Pero el ángel del Señor le contestó:
—Puedes ir con esos hombres, pero dirás solamente lo que yo te diga.
Balac recibe a Balaam
Balaam se fue con los jefes que Balac había enviado, 36 y cuando Balac supo que Balaam venía, salió a recibirlo a una ciudad de Moab situada junto al río Arnón, en la frontera del país, 37 y le dijo:
—Te mandé a llamar con insistencia; ¿por qué no querías venir? ¿Pensabas que no soy capaz de hacerte muchos honores?
38 Y Balaam le respondió:
—Pues aquí estoy, ya vine a verte. Pero no tengo poder para hablar por mi cuenta; yo sólo podré decir lo que Dios me comunique.
39 Luego Balaam se fue con Balac a Quiriat-husot, 40 donde Balac mandó que mataran vacas y ovejas y que se las llevaran a Balaam y a los jefes que lo acompañaban.
41 A la mañana siguiente, Balac buscó a Balaam y lo hizo subir a Bamot-baal, desde donde pudo ver los alrededores del campamento de los israelitas.

Balaam and the King of Moab
22 Then the Israelites traveled to the Jordan Valley in Moab. They camped near the Jordan River across from Jericho.
2-3 Balak son of Zippor saw everything the Israelites had done to the Amorites. The king of Moab was very frightened of the Israelites because there were so many of them. He was very afraid.
4 The king of Moab said to the leaders of Midian, “This large group of people will destroy everything around us, the way an ox eats all the grass in a field.”
Balak son of Zippor was the king of Moab at this time. 5 He sent some men to Balaam son of Beor. Balaam was at Pethor, near the Euphrates River. This was where Balaam’s people lived.[a] This was Balak’s message:
“A new nation of people has come out of Egypt. There are so many people that they cover all the land. They have camped next to me. 6 Come and help me. These people are too powerful for me. I know that you have great power. If you bless people, good things happen to them. And if you curse people, bad things happen to them. So come and curse these people. Maybe then I will be able to defeat them and force them to leave my country.”
7 The leaders of Moab and Midian left. They went to talk to Balaam. They carried with them money to pay him for his service.[b] Then they told him what Balak had said.
8 Balaam said to them, “Stay here for the night. I will talk to the Lord and tell you the answer he gives me.” So the leaders of Moab stayed there with Balaam that night.
9 God came to Balaam and asked, “Who are these men with you?”
10 Balaam said to God, “The king of Moab, Balak son of Zippor, sent them to give me a message. 11 This is the message: A new nation of people has come out of Egypt. There are so many people that they cover the land. So come and curse these people. Then maybe I will be able to fight them and force them to leave my land.”
12 But God said to Balaam, “Don’t go with them. You must not curse those people. They are my people.”
13 The next morning Balaam got up and said to leaders from Balak, “Go back to your own country. The Lord will not let me go with you.”
14 So the leaders of Moab went back to Balak and told him this. They said, “Balaam refused to come with us.”
15 So Balak sent other leaders to Balaam. This time he sent many more than the first time. And these leaders were much more important than the first ones he sent. 16 They went to Balaam and said, “This is what Balak son of Zippor says to you: Please don’t let anything stop you from coming. 17 I will pay you very much,[c] and I will do whatever you ask. Come and curse these people for me.”
18 Balaam gave Balak’s officials his answer. He said, “I must obey the Lord my God. I cannot do anything, great or small, against his command. Even if King Balak gives me his beautiful home filled with silver and gold, I will not do anything against the Lord’s command. 19 But you can stay here tonight like the other men did, and during the night I will learn what the Lord wants to tell me.”
20 That night, God came to Balaam. God said, “These men have come again to ask you to go with them. So you can go with them. But do only what I tell you to do.”
Balaam and His Donkey
21 The next morning, Balaam got up, put a saddle on his donkey, and went with the Moabite leaders. 22 Balaam was riding on his donkey. Two of his servants were with him. While Balaam was traveling, God became angry. So the Lord’s angel stood in the road in front of Balaam to stop[d] him.
23 When Balaam’s donkey saw the Lord’s angel standing in the road with a sword in his hand, the donkey turned from the road and went into the field. Balaam could not see the angel, so he was very angry at the donkey. He hit the donkey and forced it to go back on the road.
24 Later, the Lord’s angel stood at a place where the road became narrow. This was between two vineyards. There were walls on both sides of the road. 25 Again the donkey saw the Lord’s angel. So the donkey walked very close to one wall. This crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall. So Balaam hit his donkey again.
26 Later, the Lord’s angel stood at another place where the road became narrow. There was no place where the donkey could go around him. It could not turn to the left or to the right. 27 The donkey saw the Lord’s angel. So the donkey lay down with Balaam sitting on top of it. Balaam was very angry at the donkey. So he hit it with his walking stick.
28 Then the Lord caused the donkey to speak. The donkey said to Balaam, “Why are you angry at me? What have I done to you? You have hit me three times!”
29 Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made me look foolish. If I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now!”
30 But the donkey said to Balaam, “Look, I am your donkey. You have ridden me for so many years. And you know that I have never done this to you before!”
“That is true,” Balaam said.
31 Then the Lord allowed Balaam to see the angel. The Lord’s angel was standing in the road, holding a sword in his hand. Balaam bowed low to the ground.
32 Then the Lord’s angel asked Balaam, “Why did you hit your donkey three times? I am the one who came to stop you. But just in time,[e] 33 your donkey saw me and turned away from me. That happened three times. If the donkey had not turned away, I probably would have killed you already. And I would have let your donkey live.”
34 Then Balaam said to the Lord’s angel, “I have sinned. I did not know that you were standing in the road. If I am doing wrong, I will go back home.”
35 Then the Lord’s angel said to Balaam, “No, you can go with these men. But be careful. Speak only the words that I will tell you to say.” So Balaam went with the leaders that Balak had sent.
36 Balak heard that Balaam was coming. So Balak went out to meet him at the Moabite town[f] near the Arnon River. This was at the northern border of his country. 37 When Balak saw Balaam, he said to him, “I asked you before to come. I told you it was very important. Why didn’t you come to me? Did you think I might not be able to pay you?”
38 Balaam answered, “Well, I am here now. I came, but I might not be able to do what you asked. I can only say the words God tells me to say.”
39 Then Balaam went with Balak to Kiriath Huzoth. 40 Balak killed some cattle and some sheep as his sacrifice. He gave some of the meat to Balaam and some to the leaders who were with him.
41 The next morning Balak took Balaam to the town of Bamoth Baal. From there they could see part of the Israelite camp.
