Arad Destroyed
21 When (A)the Canaanite, the king of Arad, who lived in (B)the Negeb, heard that Israel was coming by the way of Atharim, he fought against Israel, and took some of them captive. 2 (C)And Israel vowed a vow to the Lord and said, “If you will indeed give this people into my hand, then I will devote their cities to destruction.”[a] 3 And the Lord heeded the voice of Israel and gave over the Canaanites, and they devoted them and their cities to destruction. So the name of the place was called (D)Hormah.[b]
The Bronze Serpent
4 From Mount Hor (E)they set out by the way to the Red Sea, (F)to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way. 5 And the people (G)spoke against God and against Moses, (H)“Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and (I)we loathe this worthless food.” 6 (J)Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and (K)they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. 7 (L)And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. (M)Pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. 8 And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.” 9 So (N)Moses made a bronze[c] serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.
The Song of the Well
10 And the people of Israel set out and (O)camped in Oboth. 11 (P)And they set out from Oboth and (Q)camped at Iye-abarim, in the wilderness that is opposite Moab, toward the sunrise. 12 From there they set out and camped in (R)the Valley of Zered. 13 From there they set out and camped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness that extends from the border of the Amorites, for the (S)Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites. 14 Therefore it is said in the Book of the Wars of the Lord,
“Waheb in Suphah, and the valleys of the Arnon,
15 and the slope of the valleys
that extends to the seat of (T)Ar,
and leans to the border of Moab.”
16 And from there they continued (U)to Beer;[d] that is the well of which the Lord said to Moses, “Gather the people together, so that (V)I may give them water.” 17 Then Israel sang this song:
“Spring up, O well!—Sing to it!—
18 the well that the princes made,
that the nobles of the people dug,
with (W)the scepter and with their staffs.”
And from the wilderness they went on to Mattanah, 19 and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth, 20 and from Bamoth to the valley lying in the region of Moab by the top of Pisgah (X)that looks down on the desert.[e]
King Sihon Defeated
21 Then (Y)Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying, 22 (Z)“Let me pass through your land. We will not turn aside into field or vineyard. We will not drink the water of a well. We will go by the King's Highway until we have passed through your territory.” 23 (AA)But Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his territory. He gathered all his people together and went out against Israel to the wilderness and (AB)came to Jahaz and fought against Israel. 24 (AC)And Israel defeated him with the edge of the sword and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the (AD)Jabbok, as far as to the Ammonites, for the border of the Ammonites was strong. 25 And Israel took all these cities, and Israel settled in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all its villages. 26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and taken all his land out of his hand, as far as the Arnon. 27 Therefore the (AE)ballad singers say,
“Come to (AF)Heshbon, let it be built;
let the city of Sihon be established.
28 For (AG)fire came out from (AH)Heshbon,
flame from the city of Sihon.
It devoured (AI)Ar of Moab,
and swallowed[f] the heights of the Arnon.
29 (AJ)Woe to you, O Moab!
You are undone, O people of (AK)Chemosh!
He has made his sons fugitives,
and his daughters captives,
to an Amorite king, Sihon.
30 So we overthrew them;
Heshbon, as far as (AL)Dibon, perished;
and we laid waste as far as Nophah;
fire spread as far as (AM)Medeba.”[g]
King Og Defeated
31 Thus Israel lived in the land of the Amorites. 32 And Moses sent to spy out (AN)Jazer, and they captured its villages and dispossessed the Amorites who were there. 33 Then they turned and went up by the way to Bashan. And Og the king of Bashan came out against them, he and all his people, to battle (AO)at Edrei. 34 (AP)But the Lord said to Moses, “Do not fear him, for I have given him into your hand, and all his people, and his land. And (AQ)you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.” 35 So they defeated him and his sons and all his people, until he had no survivor left. And they possessed his land.

A rézkígyó
21 Amikor meghallotta a kánaáni Arád királya, aki a Délvidéken lakott, hogy odaért Izráel az atárimi úton, megtámadta Izráelt, és foglyokat ejtett közülük.
2 Ekkor fogadalmat tett Izráel az Úrnak, és ezt mondta: Ha egyszer kezembe adod ezt a népet, mindenestül kiirtom városait.
3 Az Úr meghallotta Izráel szavát, kezébe adta ezeket a kánaániakat, és Izráel mindenestül kiirtotta őket és városaikat. Ezért nevezték el azt a helyet Hormának.
4 Majd elindultak a Hór-hegytől a Vörös-tenger felé, hogy megkerüljék Edóm országát. De útközben elfogyott a nép türelme,
5 és így beszélt a nép Isten és Mózes ellen: Miért hoztatok el bennünket Egyiptomból? Azért, hogy meghaljunk a pusztában? Hiszen nincs kenyér és nincs víz, szívből utáljuk ezt a hitvány eledelt.
6 Ezért mérgeskígyókat küldött az Úr a népre, és azok megmarták a népet, úgyhogy sok izráeli meghalt.
7 Ekkor odament a nép Mózeshez, és ezt mondta: Vétkeztünk, mert az Úr ellen és ellened szóltunk. Imádkozz az Úrhoz, hogy távolítsa el rólunk a kígyókat! És imádkozott Mózes a népért.
8 Az Úr pedig ezt mondta Mózesnek: Csinálj egy rézkígyót, és tűzd rá egy póznára. Mindenki, akit megmart a kígyó, életben marad, ha föltekint arra.
9 Mózes tehát csinált egy rézkígyót, és föltűzte egy póznára. Ha azután megmart valakit a kígyó, és föltekintett a rézkígyóra, életben maradt.
Izráel tovább vándorol a pusztában
10 Azután elindultak Izráel fiai, és tábort ütöttek Óbótban.
11 Óbótból továbbmenve, tábort ütöttek Ijjé-Abárimban, abban a pusztában, amely Móábtól napkeletre van.
12 Onnan is továbbmentek, és tábort ütöttek a Zered-pataknál.
13 Onnan is továbbmentek, és tábort ütöttek az emóriak határában eredő Arnón túlsó partján, a pusztában, mert az Arnón Móábnak a határa Móáb és az emóriak között.
14 Ezért van szó az Úr harcainak könyvében Váhébról Szúfában, a völgyekről, az Arnónról,
15 a völgyek lejtőiről, amelyek Ár városa felé húzódnak, és elérik Móáb határát.
16 Onnan Beérbe mentek. Ott van az a kút, amelynél ezt mondta az Úr Mózesnek: Gyűjtsd össze a népet, mert vizet adok neki.
17 Ekkor énekelte Izráel ezt a dalt: Buzogj föl, kút, zengjétek dalát!
18 Kút, fejedelmek ásták, nép vezérei vájták kormánypálcájukkal, vezérbotjaikkal, puszta ajándékát.
19 Mattánából Nahaliélba mentek, Nahaliélból pedig Bámótba.
20 Bámótból Gajba mentek, amely Móáb mezején van a Piszga csúcsánál, mely a sivatagra néz.
Szíhón legyőzése
21 Ekkor követeket küldött Izráel Szíhónhoz, az emóriak királyához, ezzel az üzenettel:
22 Szeretnék átvonulni országodon! Nem térünk le sem szántóföldre, sem szőlőbe, kútvizet sem iszunk. A király útján megyünk, amíg átvonulunk területeden.
23 De nem engedte meg Szíhón Izráelnek, hogy átvonuljon területén, hanem összegyűjtötte Szíhón egész hadinépét, kivonult Izráel ellen a pusztába, és Jahacba érve megütközött Izráellel.
24 De Izráel kardélre hányta őket, és birtokba vette az országot az Arnóntól a Jabbókig, az ammóni határig, mert meg volt erősítve az ammóniak határa.
25 Elfoglalta Izráel mindazokat a városokat, és letelepedett Izráel az emóriak városaiban, Hesbónban is, meg a hozzá tartozó falvakban.
26 Mert Hesbón Szíhónnak, az emóriak királyának a városa volt, aki hadat viselt Móáb előbbi királya ellen, és elfoglalta egész országát az Arnónig.
27 Ezért mondják a regélők: Jöjjetek Hesbónba! Épüljön és erősödjék Szíhón városa!
28 Mert tűz csapott ki Hesbónból, láng Szíhón városából: megemésztette Ár-Móábot, az Arnón menti magaslatok urait.
29 Jaj neked Móáb! Elvesztél Kemós népe! Fiai földönfutókká lettek, leányai az emóriak királyának, Szíhónnak foglyaivá.
30 Lőttünk rájuk, s elpusztult minden Hesbóntól Díbónig, elpusztítottuk Nófahig, egész Médebáig.
Óg legyőzése
31 Ezután letelepedett Izráel az emóriak földjén.
32 Mózes kémeket küldött Jazérba, elfoglalták a hozzá tartozó falvakat, és kiűzték onnan az emóriakat.
33 Azután megfordultak, és Básán felé vonultak. De kivonult ellenük Óg, Básán királya egész hadinépével, hogy megütközzék velük Edreiben.
34 Akkor ezt mondta az Úr Mózesnek: Ne félj tőle, mert kezedbe adom őt egész hadinépével és országával együtt. Úgy bánj el vele, ahogyan elbántál Szíhónnal, az emóriak királyával, aki Hesbónban lakott.
35 És úgy megverték őt fiaival és egész hadinépével együtt, hogy senki sem tudott elmenekülni közülük. Az országot pedig birtokba vették.
