The Census

1 The Lord spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting^(A) in the Desert of Sinai^(B) on the first day of the second month^(C) of the second year after the Israelites came out of Egypt.^(D) He said: ²“Take a census^(E) of the whole Israelite community by their clans and families,^(F) listing every man by name,^(G) one by one. ³You and Aaron^(H) are to count according to their divisions all the men in Israel who are twenty years old or more^(I) and able to serve in the army.^(J) ⁴One man from each tribe,^(K) each of them the head of his family,^(L) is to help you.^(M) ⁵These are the names^(N) of the men who are to assist you:

from Reuben,^(O) Elizur son of Shedeur;^(P)

⁶from Simeon,^(Q) Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai;^(R)

⁷from Judah,^(S) Nahshon son of Amminadab;^(T)

⁸from Issachar,^(U) Nethanel son of Zuar;^(V)

⁹from Zebulun,^(W) Eliab son of Helon;^(X)

¹⁰from the sons of Joseph:

from Ephraim,^(Y) Elishama son of Ammihud;^(Z)

from Manasseh,^(AA) Gamaliel son of Pedahzur;^(AB)

¹¹from Benjamin,^(AC) Abidan son of Gideoni;^(AD)

¹²from Dan,^(AE) Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai;^(AF)

¹³from Asher,^(AG) Pagiel son of Okran;^(AH)

¹⁴from Gad,^(AI) Eliasaph son of Deuel;^(AJ)

¹⁵from Naphtali,^(AK) Ahira son of Enan.^(AL)”

¹⁶These were the men appointed from the community, the leaders^(AM) of their ancestral tribes.^(AN) They were the heads of the clans of Israel.^(AO)

¹⁷Moses and Aaron took these men whose names had been specified, ¹⁸and they called the whole community together on the first day of the second month.^(AP) The people registered their ancestry^(AQ) by their clans and families,^(AR) and the men twenty years old or more^(AS) were listed by name, one by one, ¹⁹as the Lord commanded Moses. And so he counted^(AT) them in the Desert of Sinai:

²⁰From the descendants of Reuben^(AU) the firstborn son^(AV) of Israel:

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, one by one, according to the records of their clans and families. ²¹The number from the tribe of Reuben^(AW) was 46,500.

²²From the descendants of Simeon:^(AX)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were counted and listed by name, one by one, according to the records of their clans and families. ²³The number from the tribe of Simeon was 59,300.^(AY)

²⁴From the descendants of Gad:^(AZ)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. ²⁵The number from the tribe of Gad^(BA) was 45,650.

²⁶From the descendants of Judah:^(BB)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. ²⁷The number from the tribe of Judah^(BC) was 74,600.

²⁸From the descendants of Issachar:^(BD)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. ²⁹The number from the tribe of Issachar^(BE) was 54,400.^(BF)

³⁰From the descendants of Zebulun:^(BG)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. ³¹The number from the tribe of Zebulun was 57,400.^(BH)

³²From the sons of Joseph:^(BI)

From the descendants of Ephraim:^(BJ)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. ³³The number from the tribe of Ephraim^(BK) was 40,500.

³⁴From the descendants of Manasseh:^(BL)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. ³⁵The number from the tribe of Manasseh was 32,200.

³⁶From the descendants of Benjamin:^(BM)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. ³⁷The number from the tribe of Benjamin^(BN) was 35,400.

³⁸From the descendants of Dan:^(BO)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. ³⁹The number from the tribe of Dan was 62,700.^(BP)

⁴⁰From the descendants of Asher:^(BQ)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. ⁴¹The number from the tribe of Asher^(BR) was 41,500.

⁴²From the descendants of Naphtali:^(BS)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. ⁴³The number from the tribe of Naphtali^(BT) was 53,400.^(BU)

⁴⁴These were the men counted by Moses and Aaron^(BV) and the twelve leaders of Israel, each one representing his family. ⁴⁵All the Israelites twenty years old or more^(BW) who were able to serve in Israel’s army were counted according to their families.^(BX) ⁴⁶The total number was 603,550.^(BY)

⁴⁷The ancestral tribe of the Levites,^(BZ) however, was not counted^(CA) along with the others. ⁴⁸The Lord had said to Moses: ⁴⁹“You must not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the census of the other Israelites. ⁵⁰Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the tabernacle^(CB) of the covenant law^(CC)—over all its furnishings^(CD) and everything belonging to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they are to take care of it and encamp around it. ⁵¹Whenever the tabernacle^(CE) is to move,^(CF) the Levites are to take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall do it.^(CG) Anyone else who approaches it is to be put to death.^(CH) ⁵²The Israelites are to set up their tents by divisions, each of them in their own camp under their standard.^(CI) ⁵³The Levites, however, are to set up their tents around the tabernacle^(CJ) of the covenant law so that my wrath will not fall^(CK) on the Israelite community. The Levites are to be responsible for the care of the tabernacle of the covenant law.^(CL)”

⁵⁴The Israelites did all this just as the Lord commanded Moses.

The Arrangement of the Tribal Camps

2 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: ²“The Israelites are to camp around the tent of meeting some distance from it, each of them under their standard^(CM) and holding the banners of their family.”

³On the east, toward the sunrise, the divisions of the camp of Judah are to encamp under their standard. The leader of the people of Judah is Nahshon son of Amminadab.^(CN) ⁴His division numbers 74,600.

⁵The tribe of Issachar^(CO) will camp next to them. The leader of the people of Issachar is Nethanel son of Zuar.^(CP) ⁶His division numbers 54,400.

⁷The tribe of Zebulun will be next. The leader of the people of Zebulun is Eliab son of Helon.^(CQ) ⁸His division numbers 57,400.

⁹All the men assigned to the camp of Judah, according to their divisions, number 186,400. They will set out first.^(CR)

¹⁰On the south^(CS) will be the divisions of the camp of Reuben under their standard. The leader of the people of Reuben is Elizur son of Shedeur.^(CT) ¹¹His division numbers 46,500.

¹²The tribe of Simeon^(CU) will camp next to them. The leader of the people of Simeon is Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai.^(CV) ¹³His division numbers 59,300.

¹⁴The tribe of Gad^(CW) will be next. The leader of the people of Gad is Eliasaph son of Deuel.^[a]^(CX) ¹⁵His division numbers 45,650.

¹⁶All the men assigned to the camp of Reuben,^(CY) according to their divisions, number 151,450. They will set out second.

¹⁷Then the tent of meeting and the camp of the Levites^(CZ) will set out in the middle of the camps. They will set out in the same order as they encamp, each in their own place under their standard.

¹⁸On the west^(DA) will be the divisions of the camp of Ephraim^(DB) under their standard. The leader of the people of Ephraim is Elishama son of Ammihud.^(DC) ¹⁹His division numbers 40,500.

²⁰The tribe of Manasseh^(DD) will be next to them. The leader of the people of Manasseh is Gamaliel son of Pedahzur.^(DE) ²¹His division numbers 32,200.

²²The tribe of Benjamin^(DF) will be next. The leader of the people of Benjamin is Abidan son of Gideoni.^(DG) ²³His division numbers 35,400.

²⁴All the men assigned to the camp of Ephraim,^(DH) according to their divisions, number 108,100. They will set out third.^(DI)

²⁵On the north^(DJ) will be the divisions of the camp of Dan under their standard.^(DK) The leader of the people of Dan is Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.^(DL) ²⁶His division numbers 62,700.

²⁷The tribe of Asher will camp next to them. The leader of the people of Asher is Pagiel son of Okran.^(DM) ²⁸His division numbers 41,500.

²⁹The tribe of Naphtali^(DN) will be next. The leader of the people of Naphtali is Ahira son of Enan.^(DO) ³⁰His division numbers 53,400.

³¹All the men assigned to the camp of Dan number 157,600. They will set out last,^(DP) under their standards.

³²These are the Israelites, counted according to their families.^(DQ) All the men in the camps, by their divisions, number 603,550.^(DR) ³³The Levites, however, were not counted^(DS) along with the other Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.

³⁴So the Israelites did everything the Lord commanded Moses; that is the way they encamped under their standards, and that is the way they set out, each of them with their clan and family.

³⁵“A sword^(A) against the Babylonians!”^(B)
    declares the Lord—
“against those who live in Babylon
    and against her officials and wise^(C) men!
³⁶A sword against her false prophets!
    They will become fools.
A sword against her warriors!^(D)
    They will be filled with terror.^(E)
³⁷A sword against her horses and chariots^(F)
    and all the foreigners in her ranks!
    They will become weaklings.^(G)
A sword against her treasures!^(H)
    They will be plundered.
³⁸A drought on^[a] her waters!^(I)
    They will dry^(J) up.
For it is a land of idols,^(K)
    idols that will go mad with terror.

³⁹“So desert creatures^(L) and hyenas will live there,
    and there the owl will dwell.
It will never again be inhabited
    or lived in from generation to generation.^(M)
⁴⁰As I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah^(N)
    along with their neighboring towns,”
declares the Lord,
“so no one will live there;
    no people will dwell in it.^(O)

⁴¹“Look! An army is coming from the north;^(P)
    a great nation and many kings
    are being stirred^(Q) up from the ends of the earth.^(R)
⁴²They are armed with bows^(S) and spears;
    they are cruel^(T) and without mercy.^(U)
They sound like the roaring sea^(V)
    as they ride on their horses;
they come like men in battle formation
    to attack you, Daughter Babylon.^(W)
⁴³The king of Babylon has heard reports about them,
    and his hands hang limp.^(X)
Anguish has gripped him,
    pain like that of a woman in labor.^(Y)
⁴⁴Like a lion coming up from Jordan’s thickets^(Z)
    to a rich pastureland,
I will chase Babylon from its land in an instant.
    Who is the chosen^(AA) one I will appoint for this?
Who is like me and who can challenge me?^(AB)
    And what shepherd can stand against me?”

⁴⁵Therefore, hear what the Lord has planned against Babylon,
    what he has purposed^(AC) against the land of the Babylonians:^(AD)
The young of the flock will be dragged away;
    their pasture will be appalled at their fate.
⁴⁶At the sound of Babylon’s capture the earth will tremble;^(AE)
    its cry^(AF) will resound among the nations.

5 “Go up and down^(A) the streets of Jerusalem,
    look around and consider,^(B)
    search through her squares.
If you can find but one person^(C)
    who deals honestly^(D) and seeks the truth,
    I will forgive^(E) this city.
²Although they say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives,’^(F)
    still they are swearing falsely.^(G)”

³Lord, do not your eyes^(H) look for truth?
    You struck^(I) them, but they felt no pain;
    you crushed them, but they refused correction.^(J)
They made their faces harder than stone^(K)
    and refused to repent.^(L)
⁴I thought, “These are only the poor;
    they are foolish,^(M)
for they do not know^(N) the way of the Lord,
    the requirements of their God.
⁵So I will go to the leaders^(O)
    and speak to them;
surely they know the way of the Lord,
    the requirements of their God.”
But with one accord they too had broken off the yoke
    and torn off the bonds.^(P)
⁶Therefore a lion from the forest^(Q) will attack them,
    a wolf from the desert will ravage^(R) them,
a leopard^(S) will lie in wait near their towns
    to tear to pieces any who venture out,
for their rebellion is great
    and their backslidings many.^(T)

⁷“Why should I forgive you?
    Your children have forsaken me
    and sworn^(U) by gods that are not gods.^(V)
I supplied all their needs,
    yet they committed adultery^(W)
    and thronged to the houses of prostitutes.^(X)
⁸They are well-fed, lusty stallions,
    each neighing for another man’s wife.^(Y)
⁹Should I not punish them for this?”^(Z)
    declares the Lord.
“Should I not avenge^(AA) myself
    on such a nation as this?

¹⁰“Go through her vineyards and ravage them,
    but do not destroy them completely.^(AB)
Strip off her branches,
    for these people do not belong to the Lord.
¹¹The people of Israel and the people of Judah
    have been utterly unfaithful^(AC) to me,”
declares the Lord.

¹²They have lied^(AD) about the Lord;
    they said, “He will do nothing!
No harm will come to us;^(AE)
    we will never see sword or famine.^(AF)
¹³The prophets^(AG) are but wind^(AH)
    and the word is not in them;
    so let what they say be done to them.”

¹⁴Therefore this is what the Lord God Almighty says:

“Because the people have spoken these words,
    I will make my words in your mouth^(AI) a fire^(AJ)
    and these people the wood it consumes.^(AK)
¹⁵People of Israel,” declares the Lord,
    “I am bringing a distant nation^(AL) against you—
an ancient and enduring nation,
    a people whose language^(AM) you do not know,
    whose speech you do not understand.
¹⁶Their quivers^(AN) are like an open grave;
    all of them are mighty warriors.
¹⁷They will devour^(AO) your harvests and food,
    devour^(AP) your sons and daughters;
they will devour^(AQ) your flocks and herds,
    devour your vines and fig trees.^(AR)
With the sword^(AS) they will destroy
    the fortified cities^(AT) in which you trust.^(AU)

¹⁸“Yet even in those days,” declares the Lord, “I will not destroy^(AV) you completely. ¹⁹And when the people ask,^(AW) ‘Why has the Lord our God done all this to us?’ you will tell them, ‘As you have forsaken me and served foreign gods^(AX) in your own land, so now you will serve foreigners^(AY) in a land not your own.’

²⁰“Announce this to the descendants of Jacob
    and proclaim^(AZ) it in Judah:
²¹Hear this, you foolish and senseless people,^(BA)
    who have eyes^(BB) but do not see,
    who have ears but do not hear:^(BC)
²²Should you not fear^(BD) me?” declares the Lord.
    “Should you not tremble^(BE) in my presence?
I made the sand a boundary for the sea,^(BF)
    an everlasting barrier it cannot cross.
The waves may roll, but they cannot prevail;
    they may roar,^(BG) but they cannot cross it.
²³But these people have stubborn and rebellious^(BH) hearts;
    they have turned aside^(BI) and gone away.
²⁴They do not say to themselves,
    ‘Let us fear^(BJ) the Lord our God,
who gives autumn and spring rains^(BK) in season,
    who assures us of the regular weeks of harvest.’^(BL)
²⁵Your wrongdoings have kept these away;
    your sins have deprived you of good.^(BM)

²⁶“Among my people are the wicked^(BN)
    who lie in wait^(BO) like men who snare birds
    and like those who set traps^(BP) to catch people.
²⁷Like cages full of birds,
    their houses are full of deceit;^(BQ)
they have become rich^(BR) and powerful
²⁸    and have grown fat^(BS) and sleek.
Their evil deeds have no limit;
    they do not seek justice.
They do not promote the case of the fatherless;^(BT)
    they do not defend the just cause of the poor.^(BU)
²⁹Should I not punish them for this?”
    declares the Lord.
“Should I not avenge^(BV) myself
    on such a nation as this?

³⁰“A horrible^(BW) and shocking thing
    has happened in the land:
³¹The prophets prophesy lies,^(BX)
    the priests^(BY) rule by their own authority,
and my people love it this way.
    But what will you do in the end?^(BZ)
