Numbers 1
New King James Version
The First Census of Israel(A)
1Â Now the Lord spoke to Moses (B)in the Wilderness of Sinai, (C)in the tabernacle of meeting, on the (D)first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying: 2Â (E)âTake a census of all the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathersâ houses, according to the number of names, every male (F)individually, 3Â from (G)twenty years old and aboveâall who are able to go to war in Israel. You and Aaron shall number them by their armies. 4Â And with you there shall be a man from every tribe, each one the head of his fatherâs house.
5Â âThese are the names of the men who shall stand with you: from Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur; 6Â from Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai; 7Â from Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab; 8Â from Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar; 9Â from Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon; 10Â from the sons of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; from Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur; 11Â from Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni; 12Â from Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai; 13Â from Asher, Pagiel the son of Ocran; 14Â from Gad, Eliasaph the son of (H)Deuel;[a] 15Â from Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.â 16Â (I)These were (J)chosen[b] from the congregation, leaders of their fathersâ tribes, (K)heads of the divisions in Israel.
17Â Then Moses and Aaron took these men who had been [c]mentioned (L)by name, 18Â and they assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month; and they recited their (M)ancestry by families, by their fathersâ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, each one individually. 19Â As the Lord commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the Wilderness of Sinai.
20Â Now the (N)children of Reuben, Israelâs oldest son, their genealogies by their families, by their fathersâ house, according to the number of names, every male individually, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: 21Â those who were numbered of the tribe of Reuben were forty-six thousand five hundred.
22Â From the (O)children of Simeon, their genealogies by their families, by their fathersâ house, of those who were numbered, according to the number of names, every male individually, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: 23Â those who were numbered of the tribe of Simeon were fifty-nine thousand three hundred.
24Â From the (P)children of Gad, their genealogies by their families, by their fathersâ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: 25Â those who were numbered of the tribe of Gad were forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty.
26Â From the (Q)children of Judah, their genealogies by their families, by their fathersâ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: 27Â those who were numbered of the tribe of Judah were (R)seventy-four thousand six hundred.
28Â From the (S)children of Issachar, their genealogies by their families, by their fathersâ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: 29Â those who were numbered of the tribe of Issachar were fifty-four thousand four hundred.
30Â From the (T)children of Zebulun, their genealogies by their families, by their fathersâ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: 31Â those who were numbered of the tribe of Zebulun were fifty-seven thousand four hundred.
32Â From the sons of Joseph, the (U)children of Ephraim, their genealogies by their families, by their fathersâ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: 33Â those who were numbered of the tribe of Ephraim were forty thousand five hundred.
34Â From the (V)children of Manasseh, their genealogies by their families, by their fathersâ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: 35Â those who were numbered of the tribe of Manasseh were thirty-two thousand two hundred.
36Â From the (W)children of Benjamin, their genealogies by their families, by their fathersâ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: 37Â those who were numbered of the tribe of Benjamin were thirty-five thousand four hundred.
38Â From the (X)children of Dan, their genealogies by their families, by their fathersâ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: 39Â those who were numbered of the tribe of Dan were sixty-two thousand seven hundred.
40Â From the (Y)children of Asher, their genealogies by their families, by their fathersâ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: 41Â those who were numbered of the tribe of Asher were forty-one thousand five hundred.
42Â From the children of Naphtali, their genealogies by their families, by their fathersâ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: 43Â those who were numbered of the tribe of Naphtali were fifty-three thousand four hundred.
44Â (Z)These are the ones who were numbered, whom Moses and Aaron numbered, with the leaders of Israel, twelve men, each one representing his fatherâs house. 45Â So all who were numbered of the children of Israel, by their fathersâ houses, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war in Israelâ 46Â all who were numbered were (AA)six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty.
47Â But (AB)the Levites were not numbered among them by their fathersâ tribe; 48Â for the Lord had spoken to Moses, saying: 49Â (AC)âOnly the tribe of Levi you shall not number, nor take a census of them among the children of Israel; 50Â (AD)but you shall appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the Testimony, over all its furnishings, and over all things that belong to it; they shall carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they shall attend to it (AE)and camp around the tabernacle. 51Â (AF)And when the tabernacle is to go forward, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall set it (AG)up. (AH)The outsider who comes near shall be put to death. 52Â The children of Israel shall pitch their tents, (AI)everyone by his own camp, everyone by his own standard, according to their armies; 53Â (AJ)but the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the Testimony, that there may be no (AK)wrath on the congregation of the children of Israel; and the Levites shall (AL)keep[d] charge of the tabernacle of the Testimony.â
54Â Thus the children of Israel did; according to all that the Lord commanded Moses, so they did.

17Â And Moses taketh -- Aaron also -- these men, who were defined by name,
18Â and all the company they assembled on the first of the second month, and they declare their births, by their families, by the house of their fathers, in the number of names from a son of twenty years and upward, by their polls,
19Â as Jehovah hath commanded Moses; and he numbereth them in the wilderness of Sinai.
20Â And the sons of Reuben, Israel's first-born -- their births, by their families, by the house of their fathers, in the number of names, by their polls, every male from a son of twenty years and upward, every one going out to the host --
21Â their numbered ones, for the tribe of Reuben, are six and forty thousand and five hundred.
22Â Of the sons of Simeon -- their births, by their families, by the house of their fathers, its numbered ones in the number of names, by their polls, every male from a son of twenty years and upward, every one going out to the host --
23Â their numbered ones, for the tribe of Simeon, [are] nine and fifty thousand and three hundred.

26Â Of the sons of Judah -- their births, by their families, by the house of their fathers, in the number of names, from a son of twenty years and upward, every one going out to the host --
27Â their numbered ones, for the tribe of Judah, [are] four and seventy thousand and six hundred.
28Â Of the sons of Issachar -- their births, by their families, by the house of their fathers, in the number of names, from a son of twenty years and upward, every one going out to the host --
29Â their numbered ones, for the tribe of Issachar, [are] four and fifty thousand and four hundred.
30Â Of the sons of Zebulun -- their births, by their families, by the house of their fathers, in the number of names, from a son of twenty years and upward, every one going out to the host --
31Â their numbered ones, for the tribe of Zebulun, [are] seven and fifty thousand and four hundred.
32Â Of the sons of Joseph -- of the sons of Ephraim -- their births, by their families, by the house of their fathers, in the number of names, from a son of twenty years and upward, every one going out to the host --
33Â their numbered ones, for the tribe of Ephraim, [are] forty thousand and five hundred.
34Â Of the sons of Manasseh -- their births, by their families, by the house of their fathers, in the number of names, from a son of twenty years and upward, every one going out to the host --
35Â their numbered ones, for the tribe of Manasseh, [are] two and thirty thousand and two hundred.
36Â Of the sons of Benjamin -- their births, by their families, by the house of their fathers, in the number of names, from a son of twenty years and upward, every one going out to the host --

45Â And they are, all those numbered of the sons of Israel, by the house of their fathers, from a son of twenty years and upward, every one going out to the host in Israel,
46Â yea, all those numbered are six hundred thousand, and three thousand, and five hundred and fifty.
47Â And the Levites, for the tribe of their fathers, have not numbered themselves in their midst,
48Â seeing Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,
49Â `Only, the tribe of Levi thou dost not number, and their sum thou dost not take up in the midst of the sons of Israel;
50Â and thou, appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all its vessels, and over all that it hath; they bear the tabernacle, and all its vessels, and they serve it; and round about the tabernacle they encamp.
51Â `And in the journeying of the tabernacle, the Levites take it down, and in the encamping of the tabernacle, the Levites raise it up; and the stranger who is coming near is put to death.'
52Â And the sons of Israel have encamped, each by his camp, and each by his standard, by their hosts;
53Â and the Levites encamp round about the tabernacle of the testimony; and there is no wrath on the company of the sons of Israel, and the Levites have kept the charge of the tabernacle of the testimony.
54Â And the sons of Israel do according to all that Jehovah hath commanded Moses; so they have done.

The Census of Israelâs Warriors
1Â Now the Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on (A)the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying, 2Â â(B)Take a [a]census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, by their families, by their fathersâ households, according to the number of names, every male, head by head 3Â from (C)twenty years old and upward, whoever is able to go to war in Israel. You and Aaron shall [b]count them by their armies. 4Â With you, moreover, there shall be a man of each tribe, (D)each one head of his fatherâs household. 5Â These then are the names of the men who shall stand with you: (E)of the tribe of Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur; 6Â of the tribe of Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai; 7Â of the tribe of Judah, (F)Nahshon the son of Amminadab; 8Â of Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar; 9Â of Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon; 10Â of the sons of Joseph: of Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; of Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur; 11Â of Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni; 12Â of Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai; 13Â of Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran; 14Â of Gad, Eliasaph the son of (G)Deuel; 15Â of Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan. 16Â These are the men who were (H)called from the congregation, the leaders of their fathersâ tribes; they were the (I)heads of [c]divisions of Israel.â
17Â So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name, 18Â and they assembled all the congregation on the (J)first day of the second month. Then they registered by (K)ancestry in their families, by their fathersâ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, head by head, 19Â just as (L)the Lord had commanded Moses. So he counted them in the wilderness of Sinai.
20Â (M)Now the sons of Reuben, Israelâs firstborn, their descendants by their families, by their fathersâ households, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war, 21Â their numbered men of the tribe of Reuben were 46,500.
22Â (N)Of the sons of Simeon, their descendants by their families, by their fathersâ households, their numbered men, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, (O)whoever was able to go to war, 23Â their numbered men of the tribe of Simeon were 59,300.
24Â (P)Of the sons of Gad, their descendants by their families, by their fathersâ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war, 25Â their numbered men of the tribe of Gad were 45,650.
26Â (Q)Of the sons of Judah, their descendants by their families, by their fathersâ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war, 27Â their numbered men of the tribe of Judah were 74,600.
28Â (R)Of the sons of Issachar, their descendants by their families, by their fathersâ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war, 29Â their numbered men of the tribe of Issachar were 54,400.
30Â (S)Of the sons of Zebulun, their descendants by their families, by their fathersâ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war, 31Â their numbered men of the tribe of Zebulun were 57,400.
32Â (T)Of the sons of Joseph, namely, of the sons of Ephraim, their descendants by their families, by their fathersâ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war, 33Â their numbered men of the tribe of Ephraim were 40,500.
34Â (U)Of the sons of Manasseh, their descendants by their families, by their fathersâ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war, 35Â their numbered men of the tribe of Manasseh were 32,200.
36Â (V)Of the sons of Benjamin, their descendants by their families, by their fathersâ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war, 37Â their numbered men of the tribe of Benjamin were 35,400.
38Â (W)Of the sons of Dan, their descendants by their families, by their fathersâ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war, 39Â their numbered men of the tribe of Dan were 62,700.
40Â (X)Of the sons of Asher, their descendants by their families, by their fathersâ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war, 41Â their numbered men of the tribe of Asher were 41,500.
42Â (Y)Of the sons of Naphtali, their descendants by their families, by their fathersâ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war, 43Â their numbered men of the tribe of Naphtali were 53,400.
44Â These are the ones who were numbered, whom Moses and Aaron counted, with the leaders of Israel, twelve men, each of whom was of his fatherâs household. 45Â So all the numbered men of the sons of Israel by their fathersâ households, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go to war in Israel, 46Â all the numbered men were (Z)603,550.
Levites Exempted
47Â (AA)The Levites, however, were not counted among them by their fathersâ tribe. 48Â For the Lord had spoken to Moses, saying, 49Â âOnly the tribe of Levi (AB)you shall not count, nor shall you take their [d]census among the sons of Israel. 50Â And you shall (AC)appoint the Levites over the [e]tabernacle of the testimony, and over all its furnishings and over everything that belongs to it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall take care of it; they shall also camp around the [f]tabernacle. 51Â (AD)So when the tabernacle is to move on, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle encamps, the Levites shall set it up. But (AE)the [g]layman who comes near it shall be put to death. 52Â (AF)So the sons of Israel shall camp, each man by his own camp, and each man by his own [h]flag, according to their armies. 53Â (AG)But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there will be (AH)no divine wrath against the congregation of the sons of Israel. (AI)So the Levites shall be responsible for service to the tabernacle of the testimony.â 54Â And the sons of Israel did so; in accordance with all that the Lord had commanded Moses, so they did.
