A Census of Israel's Warriors

The Lord spoke to Moses (A)in the wilderness of Sinai, (B)in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying, (C)“Take a census of all the congregation of the people of Israel, by clans, (D)by fathers' houses, according to the number of names, every male, head by head. (E)From twenty years old and upwards, all in Israel who are able to go to war, you and Aaron shall list them, (F)company by company. And there shall be with you a man from each tribe, each man being the head of the house of his fathers. And these are the names of the men who shall assist you. From Reuben, (G)Elizur the son of Shedeur; from Simeon, (H)Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai; from Judah, (I)Nahshon the son of Amminadab; from Issachar, (J)Nethanel the son of Zuar; from Zebulun, (K)Eliab the son of Helon; 10 from the sons of Joseph, from Ephraim, (L)Elishama the son of Ammihud, and from Manasseh, (M)Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur; 11 from Benjamin, (N)Abidan the son of Gideoni; 12 from Dan, (O)Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai; 13 from Asher, (P)Pagiel the son of Ochran; 14 from Gad, Eliasaph the son of (Q)Deuel; 15 from Naphtali, (R)Ahira the son of Enan.” 16 These were the ones (S)chosen from the congregation, (T)the chiefs of their ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans of Israel.

17 Moses and Aaron took these men (U)who had been named, 18 and on the first day of the second month, they assembled the whole congregation together, who registered themselves by clans, by fathers' houses, according to the number of names from twenty years old and upwards, head by head, 19 as the Lord commanded Moses. So he listed them in the wilderness of Sinai.

20 The people of (V)Reuben, Israel's firstborn, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upwards, all who were able to go to war: 21 those listed of the tribe of Reuben were (W)46,500.

22 Of the people of Simeon, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, those of them who were listed, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upwards, all who were able to go to war: 23 those listed of the tribe of Simeon were (X)59,300.

24 Of the people of Gad, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upwards, all who were able to go to war: 25 those listed of the tribe of Gad were (Y)45,650.

26 Of the people of Judah, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upwards, every man able to go to war: 27 those listed of the tribe of Judah were (Z)74,600.

28 Of the people of Issachar, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upwards, every man able to go to war: 29 those listed of the tribe of Issachar were (AA)54,400.

30 Of the people of Zebulun, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upwards, every man able to go to war: 31 those listed of the tribe of Zebulun were (AB)57,400.

32 Of the people of Joseph, namely, of the people of Ephraim, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upwards, every man able to go to war: 33 those listed of the tribe of Ephraim were (AC)40,500.

34 Of the people of Manasseh, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upwards, every man able to go to war: 35 those listed of the tribe of Manasseh were (AD)32,200.

36 Of the people of Benjamin, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upwards, every man able to go to war: 37 those listed of the tribe of Benjamin were (AE)35,400.

38 Of the people of Dan, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upwards, every man able to go to war: 39 those listed of the tribe of Dan were (AF)62,700.

40 Of the people of Asher, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upwards, every man able to go to war: 41 those listed of the tribe of Asher were (AG)41,500.

42 Of the people of Naphtali, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upwards, every man able to go to war: 43 those listed of the tribe of Naphtali were (AH)53,400.

44 (AI)These are those who were listed, whom Moses and Aaron listed with the help of the chiefs of Israel, twelve men, each representing his fathers' house. 45 So all those listed of the people of Israel, by their fathers' houses, from twenty years old and upwards, every man able to go to war in Israel— 46 all those listed were (AJ)603,550.

Levites Exempted

47 But (AK)the Levites were not listed along with them by their ancestral tribe. 48 For the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 49 “Only the tribe of Levi you shall not list, and you shall not take a census of them among the people of Israel. 50 (AL)But appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all its furnishings, and over all that belongs to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall take care of it (AM)and shall camp round the tabernacle. 51 (AN)When the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down, and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up. (AO)And if any outsider comes near, he shall be put to death. 52 The people of Israel shall pitch their tents by their companies, each man in his own camp and (AP)each man by his own standard. 53 But the Levites shall camp round the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there may be no (AQ)wrath on the congregation of the people of Israel. (AR)And the Levites shall keep guard over the tabernacle of the testimony.” 54 Thus did the people of Israel; they did according to all that the Lord commanded Moses.

Censo de Israel en Sinaí

El día primero del mes segundo del segundo año de la salida de Egipto, el Señor habló con Moisés en el desierto de Sinaí. En el tabernáculo de reunión le dijo:

»Éstos son los nombres de los varones que estarán con ustedes:

»De la tribu de Rubén, Elisur hijo de Sedeur.

»De Simeón, Selumiel hijo de Surisaday.

»De Judá, Nasón hijo de Aminadab.

»De Isacar, Natanael hijo de Suar.

»De Zabulón, Eliab hijo de Helón.

10 »De los hijos de José:

»De Efraín, Elisama hijo de Amiud.

»De Manasés, Gamaliel hijo de Pedasur.

11 »De Benjamín, Abidán hijo de Gedeoni.

12 »De Dan, Ajiezer hijo de Amisaday.

13 »De Aser, Pagiel hijo de Ocrán.

14 »De Gad, Eliasaf hijo de Deuel.

15 »De Neftalí, Ajirá hijo de Enán.»

16 Éstos eran jefes de las tribus de sus padres y capitanes de los escuadrones de Israel, y fueron nombrados de entre la congregación. 17 Moisés y Aarón tomaron a estos varones designados por nombre, 18 y el día primero del mes segundo reunieron a toda la congregación y fueron agrupando a todos por familias, según las familias de sus antepasados y según la cuenta de los nombres de los mayores de veinte años. 19 Moisés los contó en el desierto de Sinaí, tal y como el Señor se lo había ordenado.

20 De los hijos de Rubén, el primogénito de Israel, fueron contados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que podían salir a la guerra, cada uno por su nombre, descendencia y familia, según las familias de sus antepasados. 21 Los contados de la tribu de Rubén fueron cuarenta y seis mil quinientos.

22 De los hijos de Simeón, fueron contados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que podían salir a la guerra, cada uno por su nombre, descendencia y familia, según las familias de sus antepasados. 23 Los contados de la tribu de Simeón fueron cincuenta y nueve mil trescientos.

24 De los hijos de Gad, fueron contados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que podían salir a la guerra, cada uno por su nombre, descendencia y familia, según las familias de sus antepasados. 25 Los contados de la tribu de Gad fueron cuarenta y cinco mil seiscientos cincuenta.

26 De los hijos de Judá, fueron contados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que podían salir a la guerra, cada uno por su nombre, descendencia y familia, según las familias de sus antepasados. 27 Los contados de la tribu de Judá fueron setenta y cuatro mil seiscientos.

28 De los hijos de Isacar, fueron contados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que podían salir a la guerra, cada uno por su nombre, descendencia y familia, según las familias de sus antepasados. 29 Los contados de la tribu de Isacar fueron cincuenta y cuatro mil cuatrocientos.

30 De los hijos de Zabulón, fueron contados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que podían salir a la guerra, cada uno por su nombre, descendencia y familia, según las familias de sus antepasados. 31 Los contados de la tribu de Zabulón fueron cincuenta y siete mil cuatrocientos.

32 De los hijos de José: de los hijos de Efraín fueron contados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que podían salir a la guerra, cada uno por su nombre, descendencia y familia, según las familias de sus antepasados. 33 Los contados de la tribu de Efraín fueron cuarenta mil quinientos.

34 De los hijos de Manasés, fueron contados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que podían salir a la guerra, cada uno por su nombre, descendencia y familia, según las familias de sus antepasados. 35 Los contados de la tribu de Manasés fueron treinta y dos mil doscientos.

36 De los hijos de Benjamín, fueron contados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que podían salir a la guerra, cada uno por su nombre, descendencia y familia, según las familias de sus antepasados. 37 Los contados de la tribu de Benjamín fueron treinta y cinco mil cuatrocientos.

38 De los hijos de Dan, fueron contados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que podían salir a la guerra, cada uno por su nombre, descendencia y familia, según las familias de sus antepasados. 39 Los contados de la tribu de Dan fueron sesenta y dos mil setecientos.

40 De los hijos de Aser, fueron contados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que podían salir a la guerra, cada uno por su nombre, descendencia y familia, según las familias de sus antepasados. 41 Los contados de la tribu de Aser fueron cuarenta y un mil quinientos.

42 De los hijos de Neftalí, fueron contados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que podían salir a la guerra, cada uno por su nombre, descendencia y familia, según las familias de sus antepasados. 43 Los contados de la tribu de Neftalí fueron cincuenta y tres mil cuatrocientos.

44 Éstos fueron los que contaron Moisés y Aarón, con los doce jefes de Israel, uno por cada familia de sus antepasados. 45 Todos los israelitas mayores de veinte años que fueron contados por las familias de sus antepasados, y que podían salir a la guerra, 46 fueron un total de seiscientos tres mil quinientos cincuenta.

Nombramiento de los levitas

47 Los levitas no fueron contados entre ellos según la tribu de sus padres, 48 porque el Señor habló con Moisés y le dijo:

49 «La tribu de Leví será la única a la que no contarás, ni llevarás la cuenta de ellos entre los israelitas, 50 sino que pondrás a los levitas en el tabernáculo del testimonio, y a cargo de todos sus utensilios y de todo lo que le pertenece. Ellos llevarán el tabernáculo y todos sus enseres, y acamparán alrededor del tabernáculo y servirán en él. 51 Cuando el tabernáculo haya de trasladarse, los levitas lo desarmarán, y cuando haya de detenerse, los levitas lo armarán; y el extraño que se acerque será condenado a muerte. 52 Los hijos de Israel acamparán en su respectivo campamento, cada uno junto a su bandera y en el orden de sus ejércitos, 53 pero los levitas acamparán alrededor del tabernáculo del testimonio, para que no venga la ira sobre la congregación de los hijos de Israel, y se ocuparán de cuidar el tabernáculo del testimonio.»

54 Y los hijos de Israel hicieron todo conforme a todo lo que el Señor le ordenó a Moisés.

The Census

The Lord spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting(A) in the Desert of Sinai(B) on the first day of the second month(C) of the second year after the Israelites came out of Egypt.(D) He said: “Take a census(E) of the whole Israelite community by their clans and families,(F) listing every man by name,(G) one by one. You and Aaron(H) are to count according to their divisions all the men in Israel who are twenty years old or more(I) and able to serve in the army.(J) One man from each tribe,(K) each of them the head of his family,(L) is to help you.(M) These are the names(N) of the men who are to assist you:

from Reuben,(O) Elizur son of Shedeur;(P)

from Simeon,(Q) Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai;(R)

from Judah,(S) Nahshon son of Amminadab;(T)

from Issachar,(U) Nethanel son of Zuar;(V)

from Zebulun,(W) Eliab son of Helon;(X)

10 from the sons of Joseph:

from Ephraim,(Y) Elishama son of Ammihud;(Z)

from Manasseh,(AA) Gamaliel son of Pedahzur;(AB)

11 from Benjamin,(AC) Abidan son of Gideoni;(AD)

12 from Dan,(AE) Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai;(AF)

13 from Asher,(AG) Pagiel son of Okran;(AH)

14 from Gad,(AI) Eliasaph son of Deuel;(AJ)

15 from Naphtali,(AK) Ahira son of Enan.(AL)

16 These were the men appointed from the community, the leaders(AM) of their ancestral tribes.(AN) They were the heads of the clans of Israel.(AO)

17 Moses and Aaron took these men whose names had been specified, 18 and they called the whole community together on the first day of the second month.(AP) The people registered their ancestry(AQ) by their clans and families,(AR) and the men twenty years old or more(AS) were listed by name, one by one, 19 as the Lord commanded Moses. And so he counted(AT) them in the Desert of Sinai:

20 From the descendants of Reuben(AU) the firstborn son(AV) of Israel:

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, one by one, according to the records of their clans and families. 21 The number from the tribe of Reuben(AW) was 46,500.

22 From the descendants of Simeon:(AX)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were counted and listed by name, one by one, according to the records of their clans and families. 23 The number from the tribe of Simeon was 59,300.(AY)

24 From the descendants of Gad:(AZ)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 25 The number from the tribe of Gad(BA) was 45,650.

26 From the descendants of Judah:(BB)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 27 The number from the tribe of Judah(BC) was 74,600.

28 From the descendants of Issachar:(BD)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 29 The number from the tribe of Issachar(BE) was 54,400.(BF)

30 From the descendants of Zebulun:(BG)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 31 The number from the tribe of Zebulun was 57,400.(BH)

32 From the sons of Joseph:(BI)

From the descendants of Ephraim:(BJ)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 33 The number from the tribe of Ephraim(BK) was 40,500.

34 From the descendants of Manasseh:(BL)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 35 The number from the tribe of Manasseh was 32,200.

36 From the descendants of Benjamin:(BM)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 37 The number from the tribe of Benjamin(BN) was 35,400.

38 From the descendants of Dan:(BO)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 39 The number from the tribe of Dan was 62,700.(BP)

40 From the descendants of Asher:(BQ)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 41 The number from the tribe of Asher(BR) was 41,500.

42 From the descendants of Naphtali:(BS)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 43 The number from the tribe of Naphtali(BT) was 53,400.(BU)

44 These were the men counted by Moses and Aaron(BV) and the twelve leaders of Israel, each one representing his family. 45 All the Israelites twenty years old or more(BW) who were able to serve in Israel’s army were counted according to their families.(BX) 46 The total number was 603,550.(BY)

47 The ancestral tribe of the Levites,(BZ) however, was not counted(CA) along with the others. 48 The Lord had said to Moses: 49 “You must not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the census of the other Israelites. 50 Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the tabernacle(CB) of the covenant law(CC)—over all its furnishings(CD) and everything belonging to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they are to take care of it and encamp around it. 51 Whenever the tabernacle(CE) is to move,(CF) the Levites are to take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall do it.(CG) Anyone else who approaches it is to be put to death.(CH) 52 The Israelites are to set up their tents by divisions, each of them in their own camp under their standard.(CI) 53 The Levites, however, are to set up their tents around the tabernacle(CJ) of the covenant law so that my wrath will not fall(CK) on the Israelite community. The Levites are to be responsible for the care of the tabernacle of the covenant law.(CL)

54 The Israelites did all this just as the Lord commanded Moses.
