The Census
1 The Lord spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting(A) in the Desert of Sinai(B) on the first day of the second month(C) of the second year after the Israelites came out of Egypt.(D) He said: 2 “Take a census(E) of the whole Israelite community by their clans and families,(F) listing every man by name,(G) one by one. 3 You and Aaron(H) are to count according to their divisions all the men in Israel who are twenty years old or more(I) and able to serve in the army.(J) 4 One man from each tribe,(K) each of them the head of his family,(L) is to help you.(M) 5 These are the names(N) of the men who are to assist you:
from Reuben,(O) Elizur son of Shedeur;(P)
6 from Simeon,(Q) Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai;(R)
7 from Judah,(S) Nahshon son of Amminadab;(T)
8 from Issachar,(U) Nethanel son of Zuar;(V)
9 from Zebulun,(W) Eliab son of Helon;(X)
10 from the sons of Joseph:
from Ephraim,(Y) Elishama son of Ammihud;(Z)
from Manasseh,(AA) Gamaliel son of Pedahzur;(AB)
11 from Benjamin,(AC) Abidan son of Gideoni;(AD)
12 from Dan,(AE) Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai;(AF)
13 from Asher,(AG) Pagiel son of Okran;(AH)
16 These were the men appointed from the community, the leaders(AM) of their ancestral tribes.(AN) They were the heads of the clans of Israel.(AO)
17 Moses and Aaron took these men whose names had been specified, 18 and they called the whole community together on the first day of the second month.(AP) The people registered their ancestry(AQ) by their clans and families,(AR) and the men twenty years old or more(AS) were listed by name, one by one, 19 as the Lord commanded Moses. And so he counted(AT) them in the Desert of Sinai:
20 From the descendants of Reuben(AU) the firstborn son(AV) of Israel:
All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, one by one, according to the records of their clans and families. 21 The number from the tribe of Reuben(AW) was 46,500.
22 From the descendants of Simeon:(AX)
All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were counted and listed by name, one by one, according to the records of their clans and families. 23 The number from the tribe of Simeon was 59,300.(AY)
24 From the descendants of Gad:(AZ)
All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 25 The number from the tribe of Gad(BA) was 45,650.
26 From the descendants of Judah:(BB)
All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 27 The number from the tribe of Judah(BC) was 74,600.
28 From the descendants of Issachar:(BD)
All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 29 The number from the tribe of Issachar(BE) was 54,400.(BF)
30 From the descendants of Zebulun:(BG)
All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 31 The number from the tribe of Zebulun was 57,400.(BH)
32 From the sons of Joseph:(BI)
From the descendants of Ephraim:(BJ)
All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 33 The number from the tribe of Ephraim(BK) was 40,500.
34 From the descendants of Manasseh:(BL)
All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 35 The number from the tribe of Manasseh was 32,200.
36 From the descendants of Benjamin:(BM)
All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 37 The number from the tribe of Benjamin(BN) was 35,400.
38 From the descendants of Dan:(BO)
All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 39 The number from the tribe of Dan was 62,700.(BP)
40 From the descendants of Asher:(BQ)
All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 41 The number from the tribe of Asher(BR) was 41,500.
42 From the descendants of Naphtali:(BS)
All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 43 The number from the tribe of Naphtali(BT) was 53,400.(BU)
44 These were the men counted by Moses and Aaron(BV) and the twelve leaders of Israel, each one representing his family. 45 All the Israelites twenty years old or more(BW) who were able to serve in Israel’s army were counted according to their families.(BX) 46 The total number was 603,550.(BY)
47 The ancestral tribe of the Levites,(BZ) however, was not counted(CA) along with the others. 48 The Lord had said to Moses: 49 “You must not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the census of the other Israelites. 50 Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the tabernacle(CB) of the covenant law(CC)—over all its furnishings(CD) and everything belonging to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they are to take care of it and encamp around it. 51 Whenever the tabernacle(CE) is to move,(CF) the Levites are to take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall do it.(CG) Anyone else who approaches it is to be put to death.(CH) 52 The Israelites are to set up their tents by divisions, each of them in their own camp under their standard.(CI) 53 The Levites, however, are to set up their tents around the tabernacle(CJ) of the covenant law so that my wrath will not fall(CK) on the Israelite community. The Levites are to be responsible for the care of the tabernacle of the covenant law.(CL)”
54 The Israelites did all this just as the Lord commanded Moses.

1 Chúa phán với Môi-se trong Ðồng Hoang Si-nai, trong Lều Hội Kiến, vào ngày mồng một tháng hai, năm thứ hai, sau khi dân I-sơ-ra-ên[a] rời khỏi đất Ai-cập rằng, 2 “Các ngươi hãy thực hiện cuộc thống kê dân số toàn thể hội chúng I-sơ-ra-ên. Hãy theo từng thị tộc và từng gia tộc mà lập danh sách mọi người nam 3 từ hai mươi tuổi trở lên, tức mọi người I-sơ-ra-ên có khả năng ra trận. Ngươi và A-rôn hãy liệt kê họ theo từng đơn vị. 4 Mỗi chi tộc sẽ có một người cộng tác với các ngươi, người đó là tộc trưởng của mỗi chi tộc. 5 Ðây là danh sách những người sẽ giúp đỡ các ngươi:
Chi tộc Ru-bên, Ê-li-xu con trai Sê-đê-ua;
6 Chi tộc Si-mê-ôn, Sê-lu-mi-ên con trai Xu-ri-sa-đai;
7 Chi tộc Giu-đa, Nát-sôn con trai Am-mi-na-đáp;
8 Chi tộc I-sa-ca, Nê-tha-nên con trai Xu-a;
9 Chi tộc Xê-bu-lun, Ê-li-áp con trai Hê-lôn;
10 Trong các con cháu của Giô-sép:
Chi tộc Ép-ra-im, Ê-li-sa-ma con trai Am-mi-hút;
Chi tộc Ma-na-se, Ga-ma-li-ên con trai Pê-đa-xu;
11 Chi tộc Bên-gia-min, A-bi-đan con trai Ghi-đê-ô-ni;
12 Chi tộc Ðan, A-hi-ê-xe con trai Am-mi-sa-đai;
13 Chi tộc A-se, Pa-ghi-ên con trai Ốc-ran;
14 Chi tộc Gát, Ê-li-a-sáp con trai Ðê-u-ên;
15 Chi tộc Náp-ta-li, A-hi-ra con trai Ê-nan.”
16 Ðó là những người được chọn trong hội chúng, những người lãnh đạo các chi tộc, các đơn vị trưởng của quân đội I-sơ-ra-ên.
17 Môi-se và A-rôn tiếp nhận những người đã được nêu đích danh ấy. 18 Ngày mồng một tháng hai, họ triệu tập toàn thể hội chúng lại và thực hiện cuộc thống kê dân số bằng cách lập danh sách mọi người nam từ hai mươi tuổi trở lên, theo từng thị tộc và từng gia tộc, 19 như Chúa đã truyền cho Môi-se. Như vậy ông lập danh sách họ trong Ðồng Hoang Si-nai.
20 Các con cháu của Ru-bên con đầu lòng của I-sơ-ra-ên được thống kê theo phổ hệ của họ, theo từng thị tộc, từng gia tộc, căn cứ vào danh sách đã kê khai từng người, mọi người nam từ hai mươi tuổi trở lên, tức mọi người có thể ra trận; 21 tổng số những người trong danh sách của chi tộc Ru-bên là bốn mươi sáu ngàn năm trăm người.
22 Các con cháu của Si-mê-ôn được thống kê theo phổ hệ của họ, theo từng thị tộc, từng gia tộc, căn cứ vào danh sách đã kê khai từng người, mọi người nam từ hai mươi tuổi trở lên, tức mọi người có thể ra trận; 23 tổng số những người trong danh sách của chi tộc Si-mê-ôn là năm mươi chín ngàn ba trăm người.
24 Các con cháu của Gát được thống kê theo phổ hệ của họ, theo từng thị tộc, từng gia tộc, căn cứ vào danh sách đã kê khai từng người, mọi người nam từ hai mươi tuổi trở lên, tức mọi người có thể ra trận; 25 tổng số những người trong danh sách của chi tộc Gát là bốn mươi lăm ngàn sáu trăm năm mươi người.
26 Các con cháu của Giu-đa được thống kê theo phổ hệ của họ, theo từng thị tộc, từng gia tộc, căn cứ vào danh sách đã kê khai từng người, mọi người nam từ hai mươi tuổi trở lên, tức mọi người có thể ra trận; 27 tổng số những người trong danh sách của chi tộc Giu-đa là bảy mươi bốn ngàn sáu trăm người.
28 Các con cháu của I-sa-ca được thống kê theo phổ hệ của họ, theo từng thị tộc, từng gia tộc, căn cứ vào danh sách đã kê khai từng người, mọi người nam từ hai mươi tuổi trở lên, tức mọi người có thể ra trận; 29 tổng số những người trong danh sách của chi tộc I-sa-ca là năm mươi bốn ngàn bốn trăm người.
30 Các con cháu của Xê-bu-lun được thống kê theo phổ hệ của họ, theo từng thị tộc, từng gia tộc, căn cứ vào danh sách đã kê khai từng người, mọi người nam từ hai mươi tuổi trở lên, tức mọi người có thể ra trận; 31 tổng số những người trong danh sách của chi tộc Xê-bu-lun là năm mươi bảy ngàn bốn trăm người.
32 Các con cháu của Giô-sép gồm các con cháu của Ép-ra-im được thống kê theo phổ hệ của họ, theo từng thị tộc, từng gia tộc, căn cứ vào danh sách đã kê khai từng người, mọi người nam từ hai mươi tuổi trở lên, tức mọi người có thể ra trận; 33 tổng số những người trong danh sách của chi tộc Ép-ra-im là bốn mươi ngàn năm trăm người.
34 Các con cháu của Ma-na-se được thống kê theo phổ hệ của họ, theo từng thị tộc, từng gia tộc, căn cứ vào danh sách đã kê khai từng người, mọi người nam từ hai mươi tuổi trở lên, tức mọi người có thể ra trận; 35 tổng số những người trong danh sách của chi tộc Ma-na-se là ba mươi hai ngàn hai trăm người.
36 Các con cháu của Bên-gia-min được thống kê theo phổ hệ của họ, theo từng thị tộc, từng gia tộc, căn cứ vào danh sách đã kê khai từng người, mọi người nam từ hai mươi tuổi trở lên, tức mọi người có thể ra trận; 37 tổng số những người trong danh sách của chi tộc Bên-gia-min là ba mươi lăm ngàn bốn trăm người.
38 Các con cháu của Ðan được thống kê theo phổ hệ của họ, theo từng thị tộc, từng gia tộc, căn cứ vào danh sách đã kê khai từng người, mọi người nam từ hai mươi tuổi trở lên, tức mọi người có thể ra trận; 39 tổng số những người trong danh sách của chi tộc Ðan là sáu mươi hai ngàn bảy trăm người.
40 Các con cháu của A-se được thống kê theo phổ hệ của họ, theo từng thị tộc, từng gia tộc, căn cứ vào danh sách đã kê khai từng người, mọi người nam từ hai mươi tuổi trở lên, tức mọi người có thể ra trận; 41 tổng số những người trong danh sách của chi tộc A-se là bốn mươi mốt ngàn năm trăm người.
42 Các con cháu của Náp-ta-li được thống kê theo phổ hệ của họ, theo từng thị tộc, từng gia tộc, căn cứ vào danh sách đã kê khai từng người, mọi người nam từ hai mươi tuổi trở lên, tức mọi người có thể ra trận; 43 tổng số những người trong danh sách của chi tộc Náp-ta-li là năm mươi ba ngàn bốn trăm người.
44 Ðó là con số những người được thống kê, tức những người Môi-se và A-rôn đã lập danh sách, với sự giúp đỡ của những người lãnh đạo dân I-sơ-ra-ên, tức mười hai người, mỗi người đại diện cho chi tộc của họ. 45 Như vậy tổng số người I-sơ-ra-ên được thống kê theo chi tộc của họ, mọi người nam từ hai mươi tuổi trở lên, tức mọi người trong dân I-sơ-ra-ên có thể ra trận, 46 tổng cộng được sáu trăm lẻ ba ngàn năm trăm năm mươi người. 47 Tuy nhiên người Lê-vi đã không được thống kê theo gia tộc của họ để kể chung với các chi tộc khác.
Thống Kê Chi Tộc Lê-vi
48 Chúa phán với Môi-se rằng, 49 “Duy chỉ chi tộc Lê-vi, ngươi sẽ không đếm và thực hiện cuộc thống kê chung với những người I-sơ-ra-ên khác. 50 Nhưng hãy chỉ định người Lê-vi chịu trách nhiệm lo việc Ðền Tạm của Chứng Ước, mọi dụng cụ của Ðền Tạm, và tất cả những gì thuộc về Ðền Tạm. Họ sẽ chịu trách nhiệm di chuyển Ðền Tạm và mọi dụng cụ liên hệ đến Ðền Tạm, phục vụ những công việc của Ðền Tạm, và đóng trại ở chung quanh Ðền Tạm. 51 Mỗi khi Ðền Tạm cần di chuyển, người Lê-vi sẽ đảm trách việc tháo gỡ Ðền Tạm xuống; đến nơi nào cần phải đóng trại, người Lê-vi sẽ dựng Ðền Tạm lên. Bất cứ người nào khác đến gần Ðền Tạm sẽ bị xử tử. 52 Dân I-sơ-ra-ên sẽ đóng trại theo đơn vị mình, dưới ngọn cờ của chi tộc mình, trong thế trận của toàn thể đội quân. 53 Nhưng người Lê-vi sẽ đóng trại chung quanh Ðền Tạm của Chứng Ước, để cơn thịnh nộ sẽ không giáng xuống trên hội chúng I-sơ-ra-ên. Người Lê-vi sẽ chịu trách nhiệm bảo vệ Ðền Tạm của Chứng Ước.”
54 Dân I-sơ-ra-ên thi hành mọi điều Chúa đã truyền cho Môi-se.

18 And they assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month, and they declared their pedigrees after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, by their polls.
19 As the Lord commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.
20 And the children of Reuben, Israel's eldest son, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;
21 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Reuben, were forty and six thousand and five hundred.
22 Of the children of Simeon, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, those that were numbered of them, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;
23 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Simeon, were fifty and nine thousand and three hundred.
24 Of the children of Gad, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;
25 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Gad, were forty and five thousand six hundred and fifty.
26 Of the children of Judah, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;
27 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Judah, were threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred.
28 Of the children of Issachar, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;
29 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Issachar, were fifty and four thousand and four hundred.
30 Of the children of Zebulun, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;
31 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Zebulun, were fifty and seven thousand and four hundred.
32 Of the children of Joseph, namely, of the children of Ephraim, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;
33 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Ephraim, were forty thousand and five hundred.
34 Of the children of Manasseh, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;
35 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Manasseh, were thirty and two thousand and two hundred.
36 Of the children of Benjamin, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

38 Of the children of Dan, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

40 Of the children of Asher, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;
41 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Asher, were forty and one thousand and five hundred.
42 Of the children of Naphtali, throughout their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;
43 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Naphtali, were fifty and three thousand and four hundred.
44 These are those that were numbered, which Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, being twelve men: each one was for the house of his fathers.
45 So were all those that were numbered of the children of Israel, by the house of their fathers, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Israel;
46 Even all they that were numbered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.
47 But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them.
48 For the Lord had spoken unto Moses, saying,
49 Only thou shalt not number the tribe of Levi, neither take the sum of them among the children of Israel:
50 But thou shalt appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of testimony, and over all the vessels thereof, and over all things that belong to it: they shall bear the tabernacle, and all the vessels thereof; and they shall minister unto it, and shall encamp round about the tabernacle.
51 And when the tabernacle setteth forward, the Levites shall take it down: and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.
52 And the children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, throughout their hosts.
53 But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel: and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of testimony.
54 And the children of Israel did according to all that the Lord commanded Moses, so did they.
