A Law of Inheritance

27 Then (A)the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph, came forward; and these are (B)the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. They stood before Moses, before Eleazar the priest, before the leaders, and all the congregation at the entrance of the tent of meeting, saying, “Our father (C)died in the wilderness, yet he was not among the group of those who gathered together against the Lord, in the group of Korah; but he died in his own sin, and (D)he had no sons. Why should the name of our father be withdrawn from among his family simply because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s brothers.” (E)So Moses brought their case before the Lord.

Then the Lord said to [a]Moses, (F)The daughters of Zelophehad are right about their statements. You shall certainly give them hereditary property among their father’s brothers, and you shall transfer the inheritance of their father to them. Further, you shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘If a man dies and has no son, then you shall transfer his inheritance to his daughter. And if he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers. 10 If he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. 11 And if his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his nearest relative in his own family, and he shall take possession of it; and it shall be a (G)statutory ordinance to the sons of Israel, just as the Lord has commanded Moses.’”

12 (H)Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up to this (I)mountain of Abarim, and see the land which I have given to the sons of Israel. 13 When you have seen it, you too (J)will be gathered to your people, (K)just as Aaron your brother [b]was; 14 for in the wilderness of Zin, during the strife of the congregation, (L)you rebelled against My [c]command to treat Me as holy before their eyes at the water.” (These are the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.)

Joshua to Succeed Moses

15 Then Moses spoke to the Lord, saying, 16 (M)May the Lord, the God of the spirits of [d]humanity, appoint a man over the congregation, 17 who (N)will go out [e]and come in before them, and lead them out and [f]bring them in, so that the congregation of the Lord will not be (O)like sheep that have no shepherd.” 18 So the Lord said to Moses, “[g]Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man (P)in whom is the Spirit, and (Q)lay your hand on him; 19 and have him stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation, and (R)commission him in their sight. 20 And you shall put some of your [h]authority on him, so that all the congregation of the sons of Israel will obey him. 21 Moreover, he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him (S)by the judgment of the Urim before the Lord. At his [i]command they shall go out, and at his [j]command they shall come in, both he and all the sons of Israel with him, all the congregation.” 22 Then Moses did just as the Lord commanded him; he took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation. 23 Then he laid his hands on him and (T)commissioned him, just as the Lord had spoken [k]through Moses.

Laws for Offerings

28 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Command the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘You shall be careful to present to Me My offering, My (U)food for My offerings by fire, of a soothing aroma to Me, at their appointed time.’ (V)And you shall say to them, ‘This is the offering by fire which you shall offer to the Lord: two male lambs one year old without defect as a continual burnt offering every day. You shall offer the one lamb in the morning, and the other lamb you shall offer [l]at twilight; also (W)a tenth of an ephah of fine flour as a (X)grain offering, mixed with a fourth of a [m]hin of pure oil. It is a continual burnt offering which was ordained on Mount Sinai as a soothing aroma, an offering by fire to the Lord. Then the drink offering with it shall be a fourth of a hin for each lamb; (Y)in the Holy Place pour out a drink offering of strong drink to the Lord. The other lamb you shall offer [n]at twilight; as the grain offering of the morning and as its drink offering, you shall offer it, an offering by fire, a soothing aroma to the Lord.

‘Then on the Sabbath day two male lambs one year old without defect, and two-tenths of an [o]ephah of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering, and its drink offering: 10 This is the burnt offering of every Sabbath in addition to the (Z)continual burnt offering and its drink offering.

11 ‘Then (AA)at the beginning of each of your months you shall present a burnt offering to the Lord: two [p]bulls and one ram, seven male lambs one year old without defect; 12 (AB)and three-tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering, for each bull; and two-tenths of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering, for the one ram; 13 and a tenth of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering for each lamb, as a burnt offering of a soothing aroma, an offering by fire to the Lord. 14 Their drink offerings shall be half a hin of wine for a bull and a third of a hin for the ram and a fourth of a hin for a lamb; this is the burnt offering of each month throughout the months of the year. 15 And one male goat as a sin offering to the Lord; it shall be offered with its drink offering in addition to the (AC)continual burnt offering.

16 (AD)The Lords Passover shall be on the fourteenth day of the first month. 17 (AE)On the fifteenth day of this month there shall be a (AF)feast; unleavened bread shall be eaten for seven days. 18 On the (AG)first day there shall be a holy assembly; you shall do no laborious work. 19 But you shall present an offering by fire, a burnt offering to the Lord: two [q]bulls and one ram, and seven male lambs one year old, that you have (AH)without defect. 20 For their grain offering, you shall offer fine flour mixed with oil: three-tenths of an ephah for a bull, and two-tenths for the ram. 21 A tenth of an ephah you shall offer for [r]each of the seven lambs; 22 and one male goat as a (AI)sin offering to make atonement for you. 23 You shall present these besides (AJ)the burnt offering of the morning, which is for a continual burnt offering. 24 In this way you shall present daily, for seven days, (AK)the food of the offering by fire, of a soothing aroma to the Lord; it shall be presented with its drink offering in addition to the (AL)continual burnt offering. 25 On the seventh day you shall have a holy assembly; (AM)you shall do no laborious work.

26 ‘Also on (AN)the day of the first fruits, when you present a new grain offering to the Lord in your Feast of Weeks, you shall have a holy assembly; (AO)you shall do no laborious work. 27 But you shall offer a burnt offering as a soothing aroma to the Lord: two bulls, one ram, and seven male lambs one year old; 28 and as their grain offering, fine flour mixed with oil: three-tenths of an ephah for each bull, two-tenths for the one ram, 29 and a tenth for [s]each of the seven lambs; 30 also one male goat to make atonement for you. 31 (AP)Besides the continual burnt offering and its grain offering, you shall present them with their drink offerings. They shall be without [t]defect.

Offerings of the Seventh Month

29 (AQ)Now in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a holy assembly; (AR)you shall do no laborious work. It will be to you a day for blowing trumpets. And you shall offer a burnt offering as a soothing aroma to the Lord: one [u]bull, one ram, and seven male lambs one year old without defect; also their grain offering, fine flour mixed with oil: three-tenths of an [v]ephah for the bull, two-tenths for the ram, and a tenth for [w]each of the seven lambs, and one male goat as a sin offering, to make atonement for you, (AS)besides the burnt offering of the new moon and its grain offering, and the (AT)continual burnt offering and its grain offering, and their drink offerings, according to their ordinance, for a soothing aroma, an offering by fire to the Lord.

‘Then on (AU)the tenth day of this seventh month you shall have a holy assembly, and you shall humble yourselves; you shall not do any work. You shall present a burnt offering to the Lord as a soothing aroma: one bull, one ram, and seven male lambs one year old, that you have (AV)without defect; and their grain offering, fine flour mixed with oil: three-tenths of an ephah for the bull, two-tenths for the one ram, 10 and a tenth for each of the seven lambs; 11 one male goat as a sin offering, besides (AW)the sin offering of atonement and (AX)the continual burnt offering, and its grain offering, and their drink offerings.

12 ‘Then on (AY)the fifteenth day of the seventh month you shall have a holy assembly; you (AZ)shall do no laborious work, and you shall celebrate with a feast to the Lord for seven days. 13 You shall present a burnt offering, an offering by fire as a soothing aroma to the Lord: thirteen bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs one year old, which are without defect; 14 and their grain offering, fine flour mixed with oil: three-tenths of an ephah for [x]each of the thirteen bulls, two-tenths for [y]each of the two rams, 15 and a tenth for each of the fourteen lambs; 16 and one male goat as a sin offering, (BA)besides the continual burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offering.

17 ‘Then on (BB)the second day: twelve bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs one year old without defect; 18 and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, by their number (BC)according to the ordinance; 19 and one male goat as a sin offering, (BD)besides the continual burnt offering and its grain offering, and their drink offerings.

20 ‘Then on the third day: eleven bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs one year old without defect; 21 and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, by their number according to the ordinance; 22 and one male goat as a sin offering, besides the continual burnt offering and its grain offering, and its drink offering.

23 ‘Then on the fourth day: ten bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs one year old without defect; 24 their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, by their number according to the ordinance; 25 and one male goat as a sin offering, besides the continual burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offering.

26 ‘Then on the fifth day: nine bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs one year old (BE)without defect; 27 and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, by their number according to the ordinance; 28 and one male goat as a sin offering, besides the continual burnt offering and its grain offering, and its drink offering.

29 ‘Then on the sixth day: eight bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs one year old without defect; 30 and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, by their number according to the ordinance; 31 and one male goat as a sin offering, besides the continual burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offerings.

32 ‘Then on the seventh day: seven bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs one year old without defect; 33 and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, by their number according to the ordinance; 34 and one male goat as a sin offering, besides the continual burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offering.

35 (BF)On the eighth day you shall have a sacred assembly; you shall do no laborious work. 36 But you shall present a burnt offering, an offering by fire, as a soothing aroma to the Lord: one bull, one ram, and seven male lambs one year old without defect; 37 their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bull, for the ram, and for the lambs, by their number according to the ordinance; 38 and one male goat as a sin offering, besides the continual burnt offering and its grain offering, and its drink offering.

39 ‘You shall present these to the Lord at your (BG)appointed times, besides your vowed offerings and your [z]voluntary offerings, for your burnt offerings, your grain offerings, your drink offerings, and for your peace offerings.’” 40 [aa]And Moses spoke to the sons of Israel in accordance with everything that the Lord had commanded Moses.

The Law of Vows

30 [ab]Then Moses spoke to (BH)the heads of the tribes of the sons of Israel, saying, “This is the word which the Lord has commanded: (BI)If a man makes a vow to the Lord, or takes an oath to [ac]put himself under a binding obligation, he shall not break his word; he shall act in accordance with everything that comes out of his mouth.

“And if a woman makes a vow to the Lord, and puts herself under a binding obligation in her father’s house in her youth, and her father hears her vow and her obligation under which she has put herself, and her father [ad]says nothing to her, then all her vows shall [ae]remain valid and every binding obligation under which she has put herself shall [af]remain valid. But if her father expresses disapproval to her on the day he hears of it, none of her vows or her obligations under which she has put herself shall remain valid; and the Lord will [ag]forgive her because her father has expressed disapproval to her.

“However, if she happens to [ah]marry while [ai]under her vows or the impulsive statement of her lips by which she has obligated herself, and her husband hears of it and says nothing to her on the day he hears it, then her vows shall remain valid and her binding obligations under which she has put herself shall remain valid. But if on the day her husband hears of it, he expresses disapproval to her, then he will annul her vow which [aj]she is under and the impulsive statement of her lips by which she has obligated herself; and the Lord will [ak]forgive her.

“But as for the vow of a widow or of a divorced woman, every binding obligation under which she has put herself, shall remain valid against her. 10 However, if a married woman vowed in her husband’s house, or put herself under a binding obligation with an oath, 11 and her husband heard it, but said nothing to her and did not express disapproval to her, then all her vows shall remain valid and every binding obligation under which she put herself shall remain valid. 12 But if her husband actually annuls them on the day he hears them, then no utterance from her lips concerning her vows or the obligation she put on herself shall remain valid; her husband has annulled them, and the Lord will [al]forgive her.

13 “Every vow and every binding oath to humble herself, her husband may confirm it or her husband may annul it. 14 But if her husband in fact says nothing to her from day to day, then he confirms all her vows or all her binding obligations which are on her; he has confirmed them, because he said nothing to her on the day he heard them. 15 However, if he actually annuls them [am]after he has heard them, then he shall bear the responsibility for her guilt.”

16 These are the statutes which the Lord commanded Moses concerning matters between a man and his wife, and between a father and his daughter while she is in her youth in her father’s house.

The Slaughter of Midian

31 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, (BJ)Take vengeance on the Midianites for the sons of Israel; afterward you will be (BK)gathered to your people.” So Moses spoke to the people, saying, “Arm men from among you for the war, so that they may [an]go against Midian to execute (BL)the Lords vengeance on Midian. You shall send a thousand from each tribe of all the tribes of Israel to the war.” So there were selected from the thousands of Israel, a thousand from each tribe, twelve thousand armed for war. And Moses sent them, a thousand from each tribe, to the war, and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war with them, (BM)and the holy implements and (BN)the trumpets for the alarm in his hand. So they made war against Midian, just as the Lord had commanded Moses, and (BO)they killed every male. They killed the kings of Midian along with the rest of those killed: (BP)Evi, Rekem, (BQ)Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. They also killed (BR)Balaam the son of Beor with the sword. And the sons of Israel took captive the women of Midian and their little ones; and they plundered all their cattle, all their flocks, and all their property. 10 Then they [ao]burned all their cities where they lived and all their encampments. 11 And (BS)they took all the plunder and all the spoils, both of people and of livestock. 12 They brought the captives and the spoils and the plunder to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the sons of Israel, to the camp at the plains of Moab which are by the Jordan, opposite Jericho.

13 And Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the congregation went out to meet them outside the camp. 14 But Moses was angry with the officers of the army, the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, who had come from service in the war. 15 And Moses said to them, “Have you [ap]spared (BT)all the women? 16 (BU)Behold, they caused the sons of Israel, through the [aq]counsel of (BV)Balaam, to be unfaithful to the Lord in the matter of Peor, so that the plague took place among the congregation of the Lord! 17 (BW)Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known a man [ar]intimately. 18 However, all the [as]girls who have not known a [at]man intimately, keep alive for yourselves. 19 (BX)And as for you, camp outside the camp for seven days; whoever has killed a person and whoever has touched anyone killed, purify yourselves, you and your captives, on the third day and on the seventh day. 20 And you shall purify for yourselves every garment, every article of leather, every work of goats’ hair, and every article of wood.”

21 Then Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who had gone to battle, “This is the statute of the Law which the Lord has commanded Moses: 22 only the gold and the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead, 23 everything that can [au]withstand the fire, you shall pass through the fire, and it will be clean, only it shall be purified with (BY)water for impurity. But whatever cannot [av]withstand the fire you shall pass through the water. 24 And you shall wash your clothes on the seventh day and you will be clean; and afterward you may enter the camp.”

Division of the Plunder

25 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 26 “You and Eleazar the priest and the heads of the fathers’ households of the congregation take a count of the spoils [aw]that were captured, both of people and of livestock; 27 and (BZ)divide the spoils between the warriors who went to battle and all the congregation. 28 Also, (CA)collect a tribute tax for the Lord from the men of war who went to battle, one [ax]in five hundred of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys, and of the sheep; 29 take it from their half and give it to Eleazar the priest, as an [ay]offering to the Lord. 30 And from the sons of Israel’s half, you shall take one drawn from every fifty of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys, and of the sheep, from all the animals; and give them to the Levites who (CB)perform the duty of the tabernacle of the Lord.” 31 Moses and Eleazar the priest did just as the Lord had commanded Moses.

32 Now the spoils that remained from the plunder which the [az]men of war had plundered was 675,000 sheep, 33 seventy-two thousand cattle, 34 sixty-one thousand donkeys, 35 and of captive people, of the women who had not known a [ba]man intimately, in all were thirty-two thousand people.

36 The half, the share of those who went to war, was as follows: the number of sheep was 337,500, 37 the Lords tribute tax of the sheep was 675; 38 the cattle were thirty-six thousand, from which the Lords tribute tax was seventy-two; 39 the donkeys were 30,500, from which the Lords tribute tax was sixty-one; 40 and the captive people were sixteen thousand, from whom the Lords tribute tax was thirty-two persons. 41 And Moses gave the tribute tax, which was the Lords offering, to Eleazar the priest, just (CC)as the Lord had commanded Moses.

42 As for the sons of Israel’s half, which Moses [bb]separated from the men who had gone to war— 43 now the congregation’s half was 337,500 sheep, 44 thirty-six thousand cattle, 45 30,500 donkeys, 46 and the captive people were sixteen thousand— 47 from the sons of Israel’s half Moses took one drawn from every fifty, both of people and of animals, and gave them to the Levites, who performed the duty of the tabernacle of the Lord, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.

48 Then the officers who were over the thousands of the army, the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, approached Moses, 49 and they said to Moses, “Your servants have taken a census of the men of war who are [bc]under our authority, and no man of us is missing. 50 So we have brought as an offering to the Lord what each man found, articles of gold, armlets and bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and necklaces, (CD)to make atonement for ourselves before the Lord.” 51 Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from them, all kinds of crafted articles. 52 All the gold of the offering which they offered up to the Lord, from the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, was 16,750 shekels. 53 (CE)The men of war had taken plunder, every man for himself. 54 So Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it to the tent of meeting as (CF)a memorial for the sons of Israel before the Lord.

Zelophehad’s Daughters(A)

27 The daughters of Zelophehad(B) son of Hepher,(C) the son of Gilead,(D) the son of Makir,(E) the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. They came forward and stood before Moses,(F) Eleazar the priest, the leaders(G) and the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting(H) and said, “Our father died in the wilderness.(I) He was not among Korah’s followers, who banded together against the Lord,(J) but he died for his own sin and left no sons.(K) Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.”

So Moses brought their case(L) before the Lord,(M) and the Lord said to him, “What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance(N) among their father’s relatives and give their father’s inheritance to them.(O)

“Say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter. If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. 10 If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. 11 If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to have the force of law(P) for the Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.’”

Joshua to Succeed Moses

12 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up this mountain(Q) in the Abarim Range(R) and see the land(S) I have given the Israelites.(T) 13 After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people,(U) as your brother Aaron(V) was, 14 for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin,(W) both of you disobeyed my command to honor me as holy(X) before their eyes.” (These were the waters of Meribah(Y) Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin.)

15 Moses said to the Lord, 16 “May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things,(Z) appoint someone over this community 17 to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”(AA)

18 So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership,[a](AB) and lay your hand on him.(AC) 19 Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him(AD) in their presence.(AE) 20 Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him.(AF) 21 He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring(AG) of the Urim(AH) before the Lord. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in.”

22 Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly. 23 Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him,(AI) as the Lord instructed through Moses.

Daily Offerings

28 The Lord said to Moses, “Give this command to the Israelites and say to them: ‘Make sure that you present to me at the appointed time(AJ) my food(AK) offerings, as an aroma pleasing to me.’(AL) Say to them: ‘This is the food offering you are to present to the Lord: two lambs a year old without defect,(AM) as a regular burnt offering each day.(AN) Offer one lamb in the morning and the other at twilight,(AO) together with a grain offering(AP) of a tenth of an ephah[b] of the finest flour(AQ) mixed with a quarter of a hin[c] of oil(AR) from pressed olives. This is the regular burnt offering(AS) instituted at Mount Sinai(AT) as a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord.(AU) The accompanying drink offering(AV) is to be a quarter of a hin of fermented drink(AW) with each lamb. Pour out the drink offering to the Lord at the sanctuary.(AX) Offer the second lamb at twilight,(AY) along with the same kind of grain offering and drink offering that you offer in the morning.(AZ) This is a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.(BA)

Sabbath Offerings

“‘On the Sabbath(BB) day, make an offering of two lambs a year old without defect,(BC) together with its drink offering and a grain offering of two-tenths of an ephah[d](BD) of the finest flour mixed with olive oil.(BE) 10 This is the burnt offering for every Sabbath,(BF) in addition to the regular burnt offering(BG) and its drink offering.

Vows

30 [o]Moses said to the heads of the tribes of Israel:(ES) “This is what the Lord commands: When a man makes a vow to the Lord or takes an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word but must do everything he said.(ET)

“When a young woman still living in her father’s household makes a vow to the Lord or obligates herself by a pledge and her father hears about her vow or pledge but says nothing to her, then all her vows and every pledge by which she obligated herself will stand.(EU) But if her father forbids her(EV) when he hears about it, none of her vows or the pledges by which she obligated herself will stand; the Lord will release her because her father has forbidden her.

“If she marries after she makes a vow(EW) or after her lips utter a rash promise by which she obligates herself and her husband hears about it but says nothing to her, then her vows or the pledges by which she obligated herself will stand. But if her husband(EX) forbids her when he hears about it, he nullifies the vow that obligates her or the rash promise by which she obligates herself, and the Lord will release her.(EY)

“Any vow or obligation taken by a widow or divorced woman will be binding on her.

10 “If a woman living with her husband makes a vow or obligates herself by a pledge under oath 11 and her husband hears about it but says nothing to her and does not forbid her, then all her vows or the pledges by which she obligated herself will stand. 12 But if her husband nullifies them when he hears about them, then none of the vows or pledges that came from her lips will stand.(EZ) Her husband has nullified them, and the Lord will release her. 13 Her husband may confirm or nullify any vow she makes or any sworn pledge to deny herself.[p] 14 But if her husband says nothing to her about it from day to day, then he confirms all her vows or the pledges binding on her. He confirms them by saying nothing to her when he hears about them. 15 If, however, he nullifies them(FA) some time after he hears about them, then he must bear the consequences of her wrongdoing.”

16 These are the regulations the Lord gave Moses concerning relationships between a man and his wife, and between a father and his young daughter still living at home.

Vengeance on the Midianites

31 The Lord said to Moses, “Take vengeance on the Midianites(FB) for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people.(FC)

So Moses said to the people, “Arm some of your men to go to war against the Midianites so that they may carry out the Lord’s vengeance(FD) on them. Send into battle a thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel.” So twelve thousand men armed for battle,(FE) a thousand from each tribe, were supplied from the clans of Israel. Moses sent them into battle,(FF) a thousand from each tribe, along with Phinehas(FG) son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary(FH) and the trumpets(FI) for signaling.

They fought against Midian, as the Lord commanded Moses,(FJ) and killed every man.(FK) Among their victims were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba(FL)—the five kings of Midian.(FM) They also killed Balaam son of Beor(FN) with the sword.(FO) The Israelites captured the Midianite women(FP) and children and took all the Midianite herds, flocks and goods as plunder.(FQ) 10 They burned(FR) all the towns where the Midianites had settled, as well as all their camps.(FS) 11 They took all the plunder and spoils, including the people and animals,(FT) 12 and brought the captives, spoils(FU) and plunder to Moses and Eleazar the priest and the Israelite assembly(FV) at their camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho.(FW)

13 Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp. 14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army(FX)—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who returned from the battle.

15 “Have you allowed all the women to live?” he asked them. 16 “They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice(FY) and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident,(FZ) so that a plague(GA) struck the Lord’s people. 17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man,(GB) 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

19 “Anyone who has killed someone or touched someone who was killed(GC) must stay outside the camp seven days.(GD) On the third and seventh days you must purify yourselves(GE) and your captives. 20 Purify every garment(GF) as well as everything made of leather, goat hair or wood.(GG)

21 Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle,(GH) “This is what is required by the law that the Lord gave Moses: 22 Gold, silver, bronze, iron,(GI) tin, lead 23 and anything else that can withstand fire must be put through the fire,(GJ) and then it will be clean. But it must also be purified with the water of cleansing.(GK) And whatever cannot withstand fire must be put through that water. 24 On the seventh day wash your clothes and you will be clean.(GL) Then you may come into the camp.(GM)

Dividing the Spoils

25 The Lord said to Moses, 26 “You and Eleazar the priest and the family heads(GN) of the community are to count all the people(GO) and animals that were captured.(GP) 27 Divide(GQ) the spoils equally between the soldiers who took part in the battle and the rest of the community. 28 From the soldiers who fought in the battle, set apart as tribute for the Lord(GR) one out of every five hundred, whether people, cattle, donkeys or sheep. 29 Take this tribute from their half share and give it to Eleazar the priest as the Lord’s part. 30 From the Israelites’ half, select one out of every fifty, whether people, cattle, donkeys, sheep or other animals. Give them to the Levites, who are responsible for the care of the Lord’s tabernacle.(GS) 31 So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses.

32 The plunder remaining from the spoils(GT) that the soldiers took was 675,000 sheep, 33 72,000 cattle, 34 61,000 donkeys 35 and 32,000 women who had never slept with a man.

36 The half share of those who fought in the battle was:

337,500 sheep, 37 of which the tribute for the Lord(GU) was 675;

38 36,000 cattle, of which the tribute for the Lord was 72;

39 30,500 donkeys, of which the tribute for the Lord was 61;

40 16,000 people, of whom the tribute for the Lord was 32.

41 Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as the Lord’s part,(GV) as the Lord commanded Moses.(GW)

42 The half belonging to the Israelites, which Moses set apart from that of the fighting men— 43 the community’s half—was 337,500 sheep, 44 36,000 cattle, 45 30,500 donkeys 46 and 16,000 people. 47 From the Israelites’ half, Moses selected one out of every fifty people and animals, as the Lord commanded him, and gave them to the Levites, who were responsible for the care of the Lord’s tabernacle.

48 Then the officers(GX) who were over the units of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—went to Moses 49 and said to him, “Your servants have counted(GY) the soldiers under our command, and not one is missing.(GZ) 50 So we have brought as an offering to the Lord the gold articles each of us acquired—armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces—to make atonement for ourselves(HA) before the Lord.”

51 Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted from them the gold—all the crafted articles. 52 All the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds that Moses and Eleazar presented as a gift to the Lord weighed 16,750 shekels.[q] 53 Each soldier had taken plunder(HB) for himself. 54 Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds and brought it into the tent of meeting(HC) as a memorial(HD) for the Israelites before the Lord.
