2 Now Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. 3 Moab was in great dread of the people, because they were so numerous; Moab was overcome with fear of the people of Israel. 4 And Moab said to the elders of Midian, “This horde will now lick up all that is around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.” Now Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time. 5 He sent messengers to Balaam son of Beor at Pethor, which is on the Euphrates, in the land of Amaw,[a] to summon him, saying, “A people has come out of Egypt; they have spread over the face of the earth, and they have settled next to me. 6 Come now, curse this people for me, since they are stronger than I; perhaps I shall be able to defeat them and drive them from the land; for I know that whomever you bless is blessed, and whomever you curse is cursed.”
7 So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the fees for divination in their hand; and they came to Balaam, and gave him Balak’s message. 8 He said to them, “Stay here tonight, and I will bring back word to you, just as the Lord speaks to me”; so the officials of Moab stayed with Balaam. 9 God came to Balaam and said, “Who are these men with you?” 10 Balaam said to God, “King Balak son of Zippor of Moab, has sent me this message: 11 ‘A people has come out of Egypt and has spread over the face of the earth; now come, curse them for me; perhaps I shall be able to fight against them and drive them out.’” 12 God said to Balaam, “You shall not go with them; you shall not curse the people, for they are blessed.” 13 So Balaam rose in the morning, and said to the officials of Balak, “Go to your own land, for the Lord has refused to let me go with you.” 14 So the officials of Moab rose and went to Balak, and said, “Balaam refuses to come with us.”
15 Once again Balak sent officials, more numerous and more distinguished than these. 16 They came to Balaam and said to him, “Thus says Balak son of Zippor: ‘Do not let anything hinder you from coming to me; 17 for I will surely do you great honor, and whatever you say to me I will do; come, curse this people for me.’” 18 But Balaam replied to the servants of Balak, “Although Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the command of the Lord my God, to do less or more. 19 You remain here, as the others did, so that I may learn what more the Lord may say to me.” 20 That night God came to Balaam and said to him, “If the men have come to summon you, get up and go with them; but do only what I tell you to do.” 21 So Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey, and went with the officials of Moab.
Balaam, the Donkey, and the Angel
22 God’s anger was kindled because he was going, and the angel of the Lord took his stand in the road as his adversary. Now he was riding on the donkey, and his two servants were with him. 23 The donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road, with a drawn sword in his hand; so the donkey turned off the road, and went into the field; and Balaam struck the donkey, to turn it back onto the road. 24 Then the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, with a wall on either side. 25 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it scraped against the wall, and scraped Balaam’s foot against the wall; so he struck it again. 26 Then the angel of the Lord went ahead, and stood in a narrow place, where there was no way to turn either to the right or to the left. 27 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it lay down under Balaam; and Balaam’s anger was kindled, and he struck the donkey with his staff. 28 Then the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and it said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?” 29 Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have made a fool of me! I wish I had a sword in my hand! I would kill you right now!” 30 But the donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey, which you have ridden all your life to this day? Have I been in the habit of treating you this way?” And he said, “No.”
31 Then the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road, with his drawn sword in his hand; and he bowed down, falling on his face. 32 The angel of the Lord said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? I have come out as an adversary, because your way is perverse[b] before me. 33 The donkey saw me, and turned away from me these three times. If it had not turned away from me, surely just now I would have killed you and let it live.” 34 Then Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, “I have sinned, for I did not know that you were standing in the road to oppose me. Now therefore, if it is displeasing to you, I will return home.” 35 The angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men; but speak only what I tell you to speak.” So Balaam went on with the officials of Balak.
36 When Balak heard that Balaam had come, he went out to meet him at Ir-moab, on the boundary formed by the Arnon, at the farthest point of the boundary. 37 Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not send to summon you? Why did you not come to me? Am I not able to honor you?” 38 Balaam said to Balak, “I have come to you now, but do I have power to say just anything? The word God puts in my mouth, that is what I must say.” 39 Then Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kiriath-huzoth. 40 Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and sent them to Balaam and to the officials who were with him.
Balaam’s First Oracle
41 On the next day Balak took Balaam and brought him up to Bamoth-baal; and from there he could see part of the people of Israel.[c] 23 1 Then Balaam said to Balak, “Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me.” 2 Balak did as Balaam had said; and Balak and Balaam offered a bull and a ram on each altar. 3 Then Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your burnt offerings while I go aside. Perhaps the Lord will come to meet me. Whatever he shows me I will tell you.” And he went to a bare height.
4 Then God met Balaam; and Balaam said to him, “I have arranged the seven altars, and have offered a bull and a ram on each altar.” 5 The Lord put a word in Balaam’s mouth, and said, “Return to Balak, and this is what you must say.” 6 So he returned to Balak,[d] who was standing beside his burnt offerings with all the officials of Moab. 7 Then Balaam[e] uttered his oracle, saying:
“Balak has brought me from Aram,
the king of Moab from the eastern mountains:
‘Come, curse Jacob for me;
Come, denounce Israel!’
8 How can I curse whom God has not cursed?
How can I denounce those whom the Lord has not denounced?
9 For from the top of the crags I see him,
from the hills I behold him.
Here is a people living alone,
and not reckoning itself among the nations!
10 Who can count the dust of Jacob,
or number the dust-cloud[f] of Israel?
Let me die the death of the upright,
and let my end be like his!”
11 Then Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I brought you to curse my enemies, but now you have done nothing but bless them.” 12 He answered, “Must I not take care to say what the Lord puts into my mouth?”
Balaam’s Second Oracle
13 So Balak said to him, “Come with me to another place from which you may see them; you shall see only part of them, and shall not see them all; then curse them for me from there.” 14 So he took him to the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah. He built seven altars, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar. 15 Balaam said to Balak, “Stand here beside your burnt offerings, while I meet the Lord over there.” 16 The Lord met Balaam, put a word into his mouth, and said, “Return to Balak, and this is what you shall say.” 17 When he came to him, he was standing beside his burnt offerings with the officials of Moab. Balak said to him, “What has the Lord said?” 18 Then Balaam uttered his oracle, saying:
“Rise, Balak, and hear;
listen to me, O son of Zippor:
19 God is not a human being, that he should lie,
or a mortal, that he should change his mind.
Has he promised, and will he not do it?
Has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?
20 See, I received a command to bless;
he has blessed, and I cannot revoke it.
21 He has not beheld misfortune in Jacob;
nor has he seen trouble in Israel.
The Lord their God is with them,
acclaimed as a king among them.
22 God, who brings them out of Egypt,
is like the horns of a wild ox for them.
23 Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob,
no divination against Israel;
now it shall be said of Jacob and Israel,
‘See what God has done!’
24 Look, a people rising up like a lioness,
and rousing itself like a lion!
It does not lie down until it has eaten the prey
and drunk the blood of the slain.”
25 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Do not curse them at all, and do not bless them at all.” 26 But Balaam answered Balak, “Did I not tell you, ‘Whatever the Lord says, that is what I must do’?”
27 So Balak said to Balaam, “Come now, I will take you to another place; perhaps it will please God that you may curse them for me from there.” 28 So Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, which overlooks the wasteland.[g] 29 Balaam said to Balak, “Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me.” 30 So Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.
Balaam’s Third Oracle
24 Now Balaam saw that it pleased the Lord to bless Israel, so he did not go, as at other times, to look for omens, but set his face toward the wilderness. 2 Balaam looked up and saw Israel camping tribe by tribe. Then the spirit of God came upon him, 3 and he uttered his oracle, saying:
“The oracle of Balaam son of Beor,
the oracle of the man whose eye is clear,[h]
4 the oracle of one who hears the words of God,
who sees the vision of the Almighty,[i]
who falls down, but with eyes uncovered:
5 how fair are your tents, O Jacob,
your encampments, O Israel!
6 Like palm groves that stretch far away,
like gardens beside a river,
like aloes that the Lord has planted,
like cedar trees beside the waters.
7 Water shall flow from his buckets,
and his seed shall have abundant water,
his king shall be higher than Agag,
and his kingdom shall be exalted.
8 God who brings him out of Egypt,
is like the horns of a wild ox for him;
he shall devour the nations that are his foes
and break their bones.
He shall strike with his arrows.[j]
9 He crouched, he lay down like a lion,
and like a lioness; who will rouse him up?
Blessed is everyone who blesses you,
and cursed is everyone who curses you.”
10 Then Balak’s anger was kindled against Balaam, and he struck his hands together. Balak said to Balaam, “I summoned you to curse my enemies, but instead you have blessed them these three times. 11 Now be off with you! Go home! I said, ‘I will reward you richly,’ but the Lord has denied you any reward.” 12 And Balaam said to Balak, “Did I not tell your messengers whom you sent to me, 13 ‘If Balak should give me his house full of silver and gold, I would not be able to go beyond the word of the Lord, to do either good or bad of my own will; what the Lord says, that is what I will say’? 14 So now, I am going to my people; let me advise you what this people will do to your people in days to come.”
Balaam’s Fourth Oracle
15 So he uttered his oracle, saying:
“The oracle of Balaam son of Beor,
the oracle of the man whose eye is clear,[k]
16 the oracle of one who hears the words of God,
and knows the knowledge of the Most High,[l]
who sees the vision of the Almighty,[m]
who falls down, but with his eyes uncovered:
17 I see him, but not now;
I behold him, but not near—
a star shall come out of Jacob,
and a scepter shall rise out of Israel;
it shall crush the borderlands[n] of Moab,
and the territory[o] of all the Shethites.
18 Edom will become a possession,
Seir a possession of its enemies,[p]
while Israel does valiantly.
19 One out of Jacob shall rule,
and destroy the survivors of Ir.”
20 Then he looked on Amalek, and uttered his oracle, saying:
“First among the nations was Amalek,
but its end is to perish forever.”
21 Then he looked on the Kenite, and uttered his oracle, saying:
“Enduring is your dwelling place,
and your nest is set in the rock;
22 yet Kain is destined for burning.
How long shall Asshur take you away captive?”
23 Again he uttered his oracle, saying:
“Alas, who shall live when God does this?
24 But ships shall come from Kittim
and shall afflict Asshur and Eber;
and he also shall perish forever.”
25 Then Balaam got up and went back to his place, and Balak also went his way.
Worship of Baal of Peor
25 While Israel was staying at Shittim, the people began to have sexual relations with the women of Moab. 2 These invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. 3 Thus Israel yoked itself to the Baal of Peor, and the Lord’s anger was kindled against Israel. 4 The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the chiefs of the people, and impale them in the sun before the Lord, in order that the fierce anger of the Lord may turn away from Israel.” 5 And Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Each of you shall kill any of your people who have yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor.”
6 Just then one of the Israelites came and brought a Midianite woman into his family, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of the whole congregation of the Israelites, while they were weeping at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 7 When Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he got up and left the congregation. Taking a spear in his hand, 8 he went after the Israelite man into the tent, and pierced the two of them, the Israelite and the woman, through the belly. So the plague was stopped among the people of Israel. 9 Nevertheless those that died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.

2 Balac, figlio di Sippor, vide tutto quello che Israele aveva fatto agli Amorei, 3 e Moab ebbe grande paura di questo popolo, che era così numeroso; Moab fu preso dall’angoscia a causa dei figli d’Israele. 4 Perciò Moab disse agli anziani di Madian: «Ora questa moltitudine divorerà tutto ciò che è intorno a noi, come il bue divora l’erba dei campi». 7 Gli anziani di Moab e gli anziani di Madian partirono portando in mano la ricompensa per l’indovino; arrivati da Balaam, gli riferirono le parole di Balac. 8 Balaam disse loro: «Alloggiate qui stanotte; e vi darò la risposta secondo quello che mi dirà il Signore». E i prìncipi di Moab stettero da Balaam.
9 Dio si avvicinò a Balaam e gli disse: «Chi sono questi uomini che stanno da te?» 10 Balaam rispose a Dio: «Balac, figlio di Sippor, re di Moab, mi ha mandato a dire: 11 “Ecco, il popolo che è uscito dall’Egitto ricopre la faccia della terra; ora vieni a maledirmelo; forse riuscirò così a combatterlo e potrò cacciarlo via”». 12 Dio disse a Balaam: «Tu non andrai con loro; non maledirai quel popolo perché è benedetto». 13 Balaam si alzò, la mattina, e disse ai prìncipi di Balac: «Andatevene al vostro paese, perché il Signore non mi ha dato il permesso di andare con voi». 14 I prìncipi di Moab si alzarono, tornarono da Balac e dissero: «Balaam ha rifiutato di venire con noi».
15 (A)Allora Balac mandò di nuovo dei prìncipi, in maggior numero e più importanti di quelli di prima. 16 Questi arrivarono da Balaam e gli dissero: «Così dice Balac, figlio di Sippor: “Che nulla t’impedisca di venire da me, 17 poiché io ti colmerò di onori e farò tutto ciò che mi dirai; vieni dunque, te ne prego, e maledici questo popolo”». 18 Ma Balaam rispose e disse ai servi di Balac: «Anche se Balac mi desse la sua casa piena d’argento e d’oro, non potrei trasgredire l’ordine del Signore, del mio Dio, per fare cosa piccola o grande che sia. 19 Nondimeno, trattenetevi qui, anche voi, stanotte, affinché io sappia ciò che il Signore mi dirà ancora». 20 Durante la notte Dio venne da Balaam e gli disse: «Se quegli uomini sono venuti a chiamarti, àlzati e va’ con loro; soltanto, farai ciò che io ti dirò». 21 Balaam quindi si alzò la mattina, sellò la sua asina e andò con i prìncipi di Moab.
22 Ma l’ira di Dio si accese perché egli era andato; e l’angelo del Signore si mise sulla strada per ostacolarlo. Balaam cavalcava la sua asina e aveva con sé due servi. 23 L’asina vide l’angelo del Signore che stava sulla strada con la spada sguainata in mano, svoltò e prese la via dei campi. Balaam percosse l’asina per rimetterla sulla strada. 24 Allora l’angelo del Signore si fermò in un sentiero incavato che passava tra le vigne e aveva un muro di qua e un muro di là. 25 L’asina vide l’angelo del Signore; si strinse al muro e schiacciò il piede di Balaam contro il muro; e Balaam la percosse di nuovo. 26 L’angelo del Signore passò di nuovo oltre e si fermò in un luogo stretto, dove non c’era modo di voltarsi né a destra né a sinistra. 27 L’asina vide l’angelo del Signore e si sdraiò sotto Balaam; l’ira di Balaam si accese ed egli percosse l’asina con un bastone.
28 Allora il Signore aprì la bocca dell’asina, che disse a Balaam: «Che cosa ti ho fatto perché tu mi percuota già per la terza volta?» 29 Balaam rispose all’asina: «Perché ti sei fatta beffe di me. Ah, se avessi una spada in mano ti ammazzerei all’istante!» 30 L’asina disse a Balaam: «Non sono forse la tua asina che hai sempre cavalcato fino ad oggi? Sono forse solita farti così?» Ed egli rispose: «No».
31 Allora il Signore aprì gli occhi a Balaam ed egli vide l’angelo del Signore che stava sulla strada, con la sua spada sguainata. Balaam s’inchinò e si prostrò con la faccia a terra. 32 L’angelo del Signore gli disse: «Perché hai percosso già tre volte la tua asina? Ecco, io sono uscito per fermarti, perché la via che percorri è contraria al mio volere. 33 L’asina mi ha visto e per tre volte ha deviato davanti a me. Se non avesse deviato davanti a me, io ti avrei ucciso all’istante, ma lei l’avrei lasciata in vita!» 34 Allora Balaam disse all’angelo del Signore: «Io ho peccato perché non sapevo che tu ti fossi messo contro di me sulla strada; e ora, se questo ti dispiace, io me ne ritornerò». 35 L’angelo del Signore disse a Balaam: «Va’ pure con quegli uomini; ma dirai soltanto quello che io ti dirò». E Balaam andò con i prìncipi di Balac.
36 (B)Quando Balac udì che Balaam arrivava, gli andò incontro fino alla città di Moab che è sul confine segnato dall’Arnon, nel punto più lontano. 37 Balac disse a Balaam: «Non ti ho forse fatto chiamare con insistenza? Perché non sei venuto da me? Non sono proprio in grado di farti onore?» 38 Balaam rispose a Balac: «Ecco, sono venuto da te; ma potrei forse dire qualsiasi cosa? La parola che Dio mi metterà in bocca, quella dirò».
39 Balaam andò con Balac e giunsero a Chiriat-Usot. 40 Balac sacrificò buoi e pecore e mandò parte della carne a Balaam e ai prìncipi che erano con lui.
41 La mattina Balac prese Balaam e lo fece salire a Bamot-Baal, da dove Balaam vide l’estremità del campo d’Israele.
Benedizioni pronunciate da Balaam
23 (C)Balaam disse a Balac: «Costruiscimi qui sette altari e preparami qui sette tori e sette montoni». 2 Balac fece come Balaam aveva detto, e Balac e Balaam offrirono un toro e un montone su ciascun altare. 3 E Balaam disse a Balac: «Sta’ vicino al tuo olocausto e io mi allontanerò; forse il Signore mi verrà incontro; e io riferirò quello che mi avrà fatto vedere»; e andò sopra una nuda altura.
4 Dio venne incontro a Balaam, e Balaam gli disse: «Io ho preparato i sette altari e ho offerto un toro e un montone su ciascun altare». 5 Allora il Signore mise delle parole in bocca a Balaam e gli disse: «Torna da Balac e parla così».
6 Balaam tornò da Balac, ed ecco che questi stava vicino al suo olocausto con tutti i prìncipi di Moab.
7 Allora Balaam pronunciò il suo oracolo: «Balac mi ha fatto venire da Aram[b], il re di Moab mi ha chiamato dalle montagne d’Oriente. Vieni, disse, maledici Giacobbe per me! Vieni, impreca contro Israele!
8 Come farò a maledirlo se Dio non l’ha maledetto? Come farò a imprecare se il Signore non ha imprecato?
9 Io lo guardo dalla sommità delle rupi e lo contemplo dall’alto dei colli; ecco, è un popolo che dimora solo e non è contato nel numero delle nazioni.
10 Chi può contare la polvere di Giacobbe o calcolare il quarto d’Israele? Possa io morire della morte dei giusti e possa la mia fine essere simile alla loro!»
11 (D)Allora Balac disse a Balaam: «Che mi hai fatto? Ti ho preso per maledire i miei nemici ed ecco, non hai fatto che benedirli». 12 L’altro gli rispose e disse: «Non devo forse stare attento a dire soltanto ciò che il Signore mi mette in bocca?» 13 E Balac gli disse: «Ti prego, vieni con me in un altro luogo, da dove tu lo potrai vedere; tu di qui non ne puoi vedere che una parte; non lo puoi vedere tutto quanto; di là me lo maledirai». 14 E lo condusse al campo di Sofim, sulla cima del Pisga; costruì sette altari e offrì un toro e un montone su ciascun altare. 15 E Balaam disse a Balac: «Stattene qui vicino al tuo olocausto, e io andrò a incontrare il Signore». 16 E il Signore venne incontro a Balaam, gli mise delle parole in bocca e gli disse: «Torna da Balac e parla così».
17 Balaam tornò da Balac, ed ecco che questi stava presso il suo olocausto, con i prìncipi di Moab. E Balac gli disse: «Che ha detto il Signore?»
18 Allora Balaam pronunciò il suo oracolo e disse: «Àlzati, Balac, e ascolta! Porgimi orecchio, figlio di Sippor!
19 Dio non è un uomo, da poter mentire, né un figlio d’uomo, da doversi pentire. Quando ha detto una cosa non la farà? O quando ha parlato non manterrà la parola?
20 Ecco, ho ricevuto l’ordine di benedire; egli ha benedetto; io non posso contraddire.
21 Egli non scorge iniquità in Giacobbe, non vede perversità in Israele. Il Signore, il suo Dio, è con lui e Israele lo acclama come suo re.
22 Dio lo ha fatto uscire dall’Egitto e gli dà il vigore del bufalo.
23 In Giacobbe non c’è magia, in Israele non c’è divinazione[c]; a suo tempo viene detto a Giacobbe e a Israele qual è l’opera che Dio compie.
24 Ecco un popolo che si leva come una leonessa e si alza come un leone; egli non si sdraia prima di aver divorato la preda e bevuto il sangue delle sue vittime».
25 (E)Allora Balac disse a Balaam: «Non lo maledire, ma almeno non benedire». 26 Ma Balaam rispose e disse a Balac: «Non ti ho forse detto: “Io farò tutto quello che il Signore dirà”?» 27 Balac disse a Balaam: «Ti prego, vieni, io ti condurrò in un altro luogo; forse piacerà a Dio che tu me lo maledica di là». 28 Balac dunque condusse Balaam in cima al Peor, che domina il deserto. 29 E Balaam disse a Balac: «Costruiscimi qui sette altari e preparami qui sette tori e sette montoni». 30 Balac fece come Balaam aveva detto, e offrì un toro e un montone su ciascun altare.
24 Balaam, vedendo che piaceva al Signore benedire Israele, non ricorse come le altre volte alla magia, ma voltò la faccia verso il deserto. 2 E, alzati gli occhi, Balaam vide Israele accampato tribù per tribù; e lo Spirito di Dio fu sopra di lui.
3 E Balaam pronunciò il suo oracolo e disse: «Così dice Balaam, figlio di Beor, così dice l’uomo che ha l’occhio aperto,
4 così dice colui che ode le parole di Dio, colui che contempla la visione dell’Onnipotente, colui che si prostra[d] e a cui si aprono gli occhi:
5 “Come sono belle le tue tende, o Giacobbe, le tue dimore, o Israele!
6 Esse si estendono come valli, come giardini in riva a un fiume, come aloe piantati dal Signore, come cedri vicini alle acque.

17 “Lo vedo, ma non ora; lo contemplo, ma non vicino: un astro sorge da Giacobbe, e uno scettro si eleva da Israele; colpirà Moab da un capo all’altro e abbatterà tutta quella razza turbolenta.
18 S’impadronirà di Edom, s’impadronirà di Seir, suo nemico; Israele farà prodezze.
19 Da Giacobbe verrà un dominatore che sterminerà i superstiti delle città”».
20 Poi Balaam vide Amalec e pronunciò il suo oracolo, e disse: «Amalec è la prima delle nazioni, ma il suo avvenire va in rovina».
21 Poi vide i Chenei e pronunciò il suo oracolo, e disse: «La tua abitazione è solida e il tuo nido è posto nella roccia;
22 nondimeno, il Cheneo dovrà essere devastato, finché l’Assiro ti conduca in prigionia».
23 Poi pronunciò di nuovo il suo oracolo, e disse: «Ahimè! Chi resisterà quando Dio lo avrà stabilito?
24 Ma delle navi verranno dalle parti di Chittim e umilieranno Assur, umilieranno Eber, ed egli pure finirà per essere distrutto».
25 Poi Balaam si alzò, partì e se ne tornò a casa sua; e Balac pure se ne andò per la sua strada.
Idolatria d’Israele nelle pianure di Moab

7 Und die Ältesten der Moabiter gingen hin mit den Ältesten der Midianiter und hatten den Wahrsagerlohn in ihren Händen. Und sie kamen zu Bileam und sagten ihm die Worte Balaks.
8 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Bleibt hier über Nacht, und ich will euch antworten, so wie der Herr zu mir reden wird! — So blieben die Fürsten der Moabiter bei Bileam.
9 Und Gott kam zu Bileam und sprach: Was sind das für Leute bei dir?
10 Und Bileam sprach zu Gott: Balak, der Sohn Zippors, der König der Moabiter, hat mir [eine Botschaft] gesandt:
11 Siehe, das Volk, das aus Ägypten gezogen ist, es bedeckt das ganze Land; so komm nun und verfluche es mir; vielleicht kann ich dann mit ihm kämpfen und es vertreiben!

Bileam reist zu Balak. Gottes Zorn über Bileam
15 Da sandte Balak noch einmal Fürsten, die bedeutender und vornehmer waren als jene.
16 Als diese zu Bileam kamen, sprachen sie zu ihm: So spricht Balak, der Sohn Zippors: Lass dich doch nicht davon abhalten, zu mir zu kommen!
17 Denn ich will dir große Ehre erweisen, und alles, was du mir sagst, das will ich tun. So komm doch und verfluche mir dieses Volk!
18 Bileam antwortete und sprach zu den Knechten Balaks[a]: Selbst wenn mir Balak sein Haus voll Silber und Gold gäbe, so könnte ich doch den Befehl des Herrn, meines Gottes, nicht übertreten, um etwas Kleines oder Großes zu tun!
19 Und nun, bleibt doch auch ihr noch hier über Nacht, damit ich erfahre, was der Herr weiter mit mir reden wird!
20 Da kam Gott in der Nacht zu Bileam und sprach zu ihm: Wenn die Männer gekommen sind, um dich zu rufen, so mache dich auf und geh mit ihnen; doch nur das, was ich dir sagen werde, nur das darfst du tun!
21 Da stand Bileam am Morgen auf und sattelte seine Eselin und zog mit den Fürsten der Moabiter.
22 Aber der Zorn Gottes entbrannte darüber, dass er ging. Und der Engel des Herrn trat ihm als Widersacher in den Weg. Er aber ritt auf seiner Eselin, und seine beiden Burschen waren bei ihm.
23 Als nun die Eselin den Engel des Herrn im Weg stehen sah und das gezückte Schwert in seiner Hand, da bog die Eselin vom Weg ab und ging aufs Feld. Bileam aber schlug die Eselin, um sie auf den Weg zu lenken.
24 Da trat der Engel des Herrn in einen Hohlweg bei den Weinbergen; eine Mauer war auf dieser, eine Mauer auf jener Seite.
25 Als nun die Eselin den Engel des Herrn sah, drängte sie sich an die Wand und klemmte Bileams Fuß an die Wand. Da schlug er sie noch mehr.
26 Da ging der Engel des Herrn weiter und trat an einen engen Ort, wo kein Platz zum Ausweichen war, weder zur Rechten noch zur Linken.
27 Als nun die Eselin den Engel des Herrn sah, fiel sie unter Bileam auf ihre Knie. Da entbrannte der Zorn Bileams, und er schlug die Eselin mit dem Stecken.
28 Da öffnete der Herr der Eselin den Mund; und sie sprach zu Bileam: Was habe ich dir getan, dass du mich nun dreimal geschlagen hast?
29 Bileam sprach zu der Eselin: Weil du Mutwillen mit mir getrieben hast! Wenn nur ein Schwert in meiner Hand wäre — ich hätte dich jetzt umgebracht!
30 Die Eselin aber sprach zu Bileam: Bin ich nicht deine Eselin, die du von jeher geritten hast bis zu diesem Tag? War es jemals meine Art, mich so gegen dich zu verhalten? Er antwortete: Nein!
31 Da enthüllte der Herr dem Bileam die Augen, und er sah den Engel des Herrn im Weg stehen und das gezückte Schwert in seiner Hand. Da verneigte er sich und warf sich auf sein Angesicht.
32 Und der Engel des Herrn sprach zu ihm: Warum hast du deine Eselin nun dreimal geschlagen? Siehe, ich bin ausgegangen, um dir zu widerstehen, weil [dein] Weg vor mir ins Verderben führt!
33 Und die Eselin hat mich gesehen und ist mir nun dreimal ausgewichen. Und wenn sie mir nicht ausgewichen wäre, so hätte ich dich jetzt umgebracht, sie aber am Leben gelassen!
34 Da sprach Bileam zu dem Engel des Herrn: Ich habe gesündigt, denn ich wusste nicht, dass du mir im Weg entgegenstandest! Und nun, wenn es böse ist in deinen Augen, so will ich wieder umkehren.
35 Und der Engel des Herrn sprach zu Bileam: Geh mit den Männern; aber du darfst nur das reden, was ich dir sagen werde! So zog Bileam mit den Fürsten Balaks.
36 Als nun Balak hörte, dass Bileam kam, zog er ihm entgegen bis Ir-Moab, das am Grenzfluss Arnon liegt, der die äußerste Grenze bildet.
37 Und Balak sprach zu Bileam: Habe ich nicht dringend zu dir gesandt und dich rufen lassen? Warum bist du denn nicht zu mir gekommen? Fürwahr, kann ich dich etwa nicht ehren?
38 Und Bileam antwortete dem Balak: Siehe, ich bin jetzt zu dir gekommen. Kann ich nun irgendetwas reden? Nur das Wort, das mir Gott in den Mund legt, das will ich reden!
39 So zog Bileam mit Balak, und sie kamen nach Kirjath-Huzoth.
40 Und Balak opferte Rinder und Schafe und sandte davon zu Bileam und den Fürsten, die bei ihm waren.
41 Und es geschah am Morgen, da nahm Balak den Bileam und führte ihn hinauf zu den Höhen Baals, von wo aus er den äußersten Teil des Volkes sehen konnte.
Bileams Segen über Israel — erster und zweiter Spruch
23 Und Bileam sprach zu Balak: Baue mir hier sieben Altäre, und stelle mir hier sieben Stiere und sieben Widder bereit!
2 Und Balak machte es so, wie es Bileam ihm sagte. Und Balak und Bileam opferten auf jedem Altar einen Stier und einen Widder.
3 Und Bileam sprach zu Balak: Tritt zu deinem Brandopfer! Ich will dorthin gehen. Vielleicht begegnet mir der Herr, und was er mich sehen lassen wird, das werde ich dir verkünden! Und er ging hin auf eine kahle Höhe.
4 Und Gott begegnete dem Bileam. Er aber sprach zu ihm: Die sieben Altäre habe ich errichtet und auf jedem einen Stier und einen Widder geopfert.
5 Der Herr aber legte Bileam ein Wort in den Mund und sprach: Kehre um zu Balak, und so sollst du reden!
6 Und er kehrte zu ihm zurück, und siehe, da stand er bei seinem Brandopfer, er und alle Fürsten der Moabiter.
7 Da begann er seinen Spruch und sprach:

8 Wie sollte ich den verfluchen, den Gott nicht verflucht? Wie sollte ich den verwünschen, den der Herr nicht verwünscht?
9 Denn von den Felsengipfeln sehe ich ihn, und von den Hügeln schaue ich ihn. Siehe, ein Volk, das abgesondert wohnt und nicht unter die Heiden gerechnet wird.
10 Wer kann den Staub Jakobs zählen und die Zahl des vierten Teiles von Israel? Meine Seele sterbe den Tod der Gerechten, und mein Ende soll dem ihren gleichen!«
11 Da sprach Balak zu Bileam: Was hast du mir angetan? Ich habe dich holen lassen, dass du meine Feinde verfluchst, und siehe, du hast sie sogar gesegnet!
12 Er antwortete und sprach: Muss ich nicht darauf achten, nur das zu reden, was mir der Herr in den Mund gelegt hat?
13 Balak sprach zu ihm: Komm doch mit mir an einen anderen Ort, von wo aus du es sehen kannst. Nur seinen äußersten Teil sollst du sehen und sollst es nicht ganz sehen; von da aus verfluche es mir!
14 Und er nahm ihn [mit sich] zu dem Späherfeld, auf die Höhe des Pisga, und er baute sieben Altäre und opferte auf jedem Altar einen Stier und einen Widder.
15 Und er sprach zu Balak: Tritt hier zu deinem Brandopfer; ich aber will dort eine Begegnung suchen.
16 Und der Herr begegnete dem Bileam und legte ihm ein Wort in seinen Mund und sprach: Kehre um zu Balak, und so sollst du reden!

19 Gott ist nicht ein Mensch, dass er lüge, noch ein Menschenkind, dass ihn etwas gereuen würde. Was er gesagt hat, sollte er es nicht tun? Was er geredet hat, sollte er es nicht ausführen?
20 Siehe, zu segnen habe ich empfangen; Er hat gesegnet, und ich kann es nicht abwenden!
21 Er schaut kein Unrecht in Jakob, und er sieht kein Unheil in Israel. Der Herr, sein Gott, ist mit ihm, und man jubelt dem König zu in seiner Mitte.
22 Gott hat sie aus Ägypten geführt; seine Kraft ist wie die eines Büffels.
23 So hilft denn keine Zauberei gegen Jakob und keine Wahrsagerei gegen Israel. Zu seiner Zeit wird man von Jakob sagen und von Israel: Was hat Gott [Großes] getan!
24 Siehe, welch ein Volk! Wie eine Löwin wird es aufstehen und wie ein Löwe sich erheben. Es wird sich nicht legen, bis es den Raub verzehrt und das Blut der Erschlagenen getrunken hat!«
Die weiteren Weissagungen Bileams
25 Da sprach Balak zu Bileam: Wenn du es nicht verfluchen kannst, so sollst du es auch nicht segnen!
26 Bileam aber antwortete und sprach zu Balak: Habe ich nicht zu dir geredet und gesagt: Alles, was der Herr sagen wird, das werde ich tun?
27 Balak sprach zu Bileam: Komm doch, ich will dich an einen anderen Ort führen; vielleicht wird es in Gottes Augen recht sein, dass du sie mir dort verfluchst!
28 Und Balak nahm Bileam [mit sich] auf den Gipfel des Peor, der auf die Wüste herunterschaut.
29 Und Bileam sprach zu Balak: Baue mir hier sieben Altäre und stelle mir hier sieben Stiere und sieben Widder bereit!
30 Und Balak tat, wie Bileam sagte; und er opferte auf jedem Altar einen Stier und einen Widder.
24 Als nun Bileam sah, dass es dem Herrn gefiel, Israel zu segnen, ging er nicht, wie zuvor, auf Wahrsagung aus, sondern richtete sein Angesicht zu der Wüste hin.

8 Gott hat ihn aus Ägypten geführt, seine Kraft ist wie die eines Büffels. Er wird die Heiden, seine Widersacher, fressen und ihre Gebeine zermalmen und sie mit seinen Pfeilen niederstrecken.
9 Er kauert sich nieder, um zu lagern wie ein Löwe und wie eine Löwin — wer will ihn aufwecken? Gesegnet sei, wer dich segnet, und verflucht, wer dich verflucht!«
10 Da entbrannte der Zorn Balaks gegen Bileam, und er schlug die Hände zusammen; und Balak sprach zu Bileam: Ich habe dich gerufen, damit du meine Feinde verfluchst, und siehe, du hast sie nun schon dreimal gesegnet!
11 Und nun fliehe an deinen Ort! Ich hatte vor, dich hoch zu ehren; aber siehe, der Herr hat dir die Ehre versagt!
12 Bileam aber antwortete dem Balak: Habe ich nicht auch zu deinen Boten, die du mir sandtest, geredet und gesagt:
13 Wenn mir Balak sein Haus voll Silber und Gold gäbe, so könnte ich doch das Gebot des Herrn nicht übertreten, um Gutes oder Böses zu tun nach meinem eigenen Herzen; sondern nur was der Herr reden wird, das werde ich auch reden?
14 Und nun siehe, da ich zu meinem Volk ziehe, so komm, ich will dir sagen,[d] was dieses Volk deinem Volk in den letzten Tagen tun wird!
Bileams Weissagung
15 Und er begann seinen Spruch und sprach: »So spricht Bileam, der Sohn Beors, und so spricht der Mann, dessen Augen geöffnet sind;
16 so spricht der, welcher die Worte Gottes hört, und der die Erkenntnis des Höchsten hat, der ein Gesicht des Allmächtigen sieht, der niederfällt, aber dessen Augen enthüllt sind:
17 Ich sehe ihn, aber jetzt noch nicht; ich schaue ihn, aber noch nicht in der Nähe. Ein Stern tritt hervor aus Jakob, und ein Zepter erhebt sich aus Israel. Es wird die Schläfen Moabs zerschmettern und alle Söhne Seths zertrümmern.
18 Edom wird sein Besitz und Seir zum Eigentum seiner Feinde werden; Israel aber wird Mächtiges tun.

Das Volk Israel betreibt Götzendienst. Pinehas eifert für Gott
25 Und Israel ließ sich in Sittim nieder; und das Volk fing an, Unzucht zu treiben mit den Töchtern der Moabiter,
2 und diese luden das Volk zu den Opfern ihrer Götter ein. Und das Volk aß [mit ihnen] und betete ihre Götter an.
3 Und Israel begab sich unter das Joch[e] des Baal-Peor. Da entbrannte der Zorn des Herrn über Israel.
4 Und der Herr sprach zu Mose: Nimm alle Obersten des Volkes und hänge sie auf für den Herrn angesichts der Sonne, damit der brennende Zorn des Herrn von Israel abgewandt wird!
5 Und Mose sprach zu den Richtern Israels: Jedermann töte seine Leute, die sich unter das Joch des Baal-Peor begeben haben!
6 Und siehe, ein Mann aus den Kindern Israels kam und brachte eine Midianiterin zu seinen Brüdern, vor den Augen Moses und vor den Augen der ganzen Gemeinde der Kinder Israels, während sie weinten vor dem Eingang der Stiftshütte.
7 Als Pinehas, der Sohn Eleasars, des Sohnes Aarons, des Priesters, dies sah, stand er aus der Mitte der Gemeinde auf und nahm einen Speer in seine Hand;

6 Ezért jöjj el, átkozd meg ezt a népet, mert erősebb nálam. Talán akkor meg tudom verni, és kiűzöm az országból. Jól tudom, hogy akit te megáldasz, áldott lesz, és akit te megátkozol, átkozott lesz.
7 Elmentek tehát Móáb és Midján vénei, és náluk volt a varázslás díja. Megérkezve Bálámhoz, elmondták neki Bálák üzenetét.
8 Ő ezt felelte nekik: Maradjatok itt éjszakára, és én beszámolok nektek arról, hogy mit mondott nekem az Úr. Móáb vezető emberei ott maradtak Bálámnál.
9 Isten pedig eljött Bálámhoz, és ezt mondta: Miféle férfiak vannak nálad?
10 Bálám ezt felelte Istennek: Bálák, Cippór fia, Móáb királya ezt üzente nekem:
11 Egy nép jött ki Egyiptomból, és ellepte a föld színét. Jöjj tehát és rontsd meg azt, talán akkor meg tudok vele küzdeni, és ki tudom űzni.
12 De Isten ezt mondta Bálámnak: Ne menj el velük, ne átkozd meg azt a népet, mert áldott az.
13 Fölkelt tehát Bálám reggel, és ezt mondta Bálák vezető embereinek: Menjetek vissza országotokba, mert nem engedi meg az Úr, hogy veletek menjek.
14 Móáb vezető emberei fölkeltek, visszamentek Bálákhoz, és azt mondták: Nem jött el velünk Bálám.
15 Akkor még több és azoknál tekintélyesebb vezető embert küldött Bálák.
16 Ezek megérkeztek Bálámhoz, és ezt mondták neki: Így szól Bálák, Cippór fia: Ne vonakodj eljönni hozzám!
17 Igen gazdagon megjutalmazlak, és megteszek mindent, amit mondasz nekem. Csak jöjj el és rontsd meg ezt a népet.
18 De Bálám ezt felelte Bálák szolgáinak: Ha nekem adja Bálák a házát tele ezüsttel és arannyal, akkor sem szeghetem meg Istenemnek, az Úrnak a parancsát, és nem tehetek ellene egyáltalán semmit.
19 De azért maradjatok csak itt ti is ezen az éjszakán, hogy megtudjam, akar-e még valamit beszélni az Úr?
20 Isten eljött Bálámhoz éjjel, és ezt mondta neki: Ha azért jöttek ezek a férfiak, hogy elhívjanak téged, kelj föl, menj el velük, de csak azt tedd, amit én parancsolok neked.
21 Fölkelt tehát Bálám reggel, megnyergelte a szamarát és elment Móáb vezető embereivel.
22 Isten azonban haragra gerjedt, amikor elment Bálám. Ezért odaállt az Úr angyala az útra, hogy feltartóztassa. Ő a szamarán ügetett, és vele volt két szolgája is.
23 De a szamár meglátta az Úr angyalát, ahogyan ott állt az úton kivont karddal a kezében, és letért a szamár az útról, és a mezőre ment. Bálám ütni kezdte a szamarat, hogy visszaterelje az útra.
24 Azután odaállt az Úr angyala a szőlők között egy mély útra, ahol innen is, onnan is fal volt.
25 Amikor meglátta a szamár az Úr angyalát, odalapult a kőfalhoz, és Bálám lábát is a falhoz lapította. Ekkor újból megverte.
26 Az Úr angyala továbbment, és ismét megállt egy szoros helyen, ahol nem lehetett kitérni sem jobbra, sem balra.
27 Amikor meglátta a szamár az Úr angyalát, lefeküdt Bálám alatt. Ekkor haragra gerjedt Bálám, és ütni kezdte botjával a szamarat.
28 De az Úr beszédre nyitotta a szamár száját, és az így szólt Bálámhoz: Mit vétettem ellened, hogy már harmadszor versz meg engem?
29 Bálám így felelt a szamárnak: Mert csúfot űztél belőlem. Lenne csak kard a kezemben, meg is ölnélek!
30 A szamár ezt mondta Bálámnak: A te szamarad vagyok. Rajtam jársz régtől fogva mindmáig. Szoktam-e ilyet tenni veled? Bálám azt felelte: Nem.
31 Ekkor az Úr megnyitotta Bálám szemét, aki meglátta az Úr angyalát, amint ott áll az úton kivont karddal a kezében. Bálám meghajolt, és arcra borult.
32 Az Úr angyala ezt mondta neki: Miért verted meg a szamaradat már háromszor? Azért jöttem, hogy feltartóztassalak, mert szerintem veszedelmes ez az út.
33 A szamár látott engem, azért tért ki előlem háromszor is. Ha nem tért volna ki előlem, téged meg is öltelek volna, azt pedig életben hagytam volna.
34 Bálám így felelt az Úr angyalának: Vétkeztem, nem tudtam, hogy te állsz velem szemben az úton. De ha nem tetszik neked, inkább visszatérek.
35 De az Úr angyala ezt felelte Bálámnak: Menj el ezekkel a férfiakkal, de csak azt mondd, amit én mondok neked. Bálám tehát elment Bálák vezető embereivel.
36 Amikor meghallotta Bálák, hogy jön Bálám, kiment eléje Ír-Móábig, amely az Arnón határvonalánál van, a határ legszélén.
37 Ezt mondta Bálák Bálámnak: Már többször is hívattalak téged, miért nem akartál jönni? Azt hitted, hogy nem tudlak megjutalmazni?
38 De Bálám ezt felelte Báláknak: Látod, hogy eljöttem hozzád! De nem szólhatok magamtól semmit, csak azt mondhatom, amit az Isten ad a számba.
39 Ezután továbbment Bálám Bálákkal, és megérkeztek Kirjat-Húcótba.
40 Ott marhákat és juhokat vágatott Bálák, és küldött belőle Bálámnak és a vezető embereknek is.
41 Reggel aztán magával vitte Bálák Bálámot, fölvezette Baal magaslatára, ahonnan láthatta Izráel népének egy részét.
Bálám megáldja Izráelt
23 Akkor ezt mondta Bálám Báláknak: Építs itt hét oltárt, és készíts ide hét bikát és hét kost.
2 Úgy cselekedett Bálák, ahogyan Bálám meghagyta. Azután Bálák és Bálám bikát és kost áldozott az oltárokon.
3 Majd ezt mondta Bálám Báláknak: Állj oda az égőáldozatod mellé, én pedig elmegyek. Talán lesz találkozásom az Úrral, és amit majd láttat velem, azt elmondom neked. És fölment a hegytetőre.
4 Isten találkozott Bálámmal, aki ezt mondta neki: Hét oltárt állítottam fel, és bikát meg kost áldoztam mindegyik oltáron.
5 Az Úr pedig Bálám szájába adta igéjét, és azt mondta: Térj vissza Bálákhoz, és eszerint beszélj.
6 Amikor visszatért hozzá, ő még ott állt az égőáldozat mellett, Móáb valamennyi vezető emberével együtt.
7 Bálám példabeszédbe kezdett és ezt mondta: Arámból hozatott ide Bálák, Kelet hegyeiről Móáb királya: Jöjj, átkozd meg Jákóbot, jöjj, kárhoztasd Izráelt!
8 Hogy ronthatnám meg, kit Isten nem ront meg? Hogy kárhoztatnám, kit az Úr nem kárhoztat?
9 Jól látom őt a sziklacsúcsról, szemlélem a halmokról. E nép egyedül fog lakni, nem számítja magát a nemzetek közé.
10 Ki számolhatja meg Jákóbot - száma mint a por - és Izráelnek csak a negyedét is? Bár úgy halnék meg, mint ez igazak, s lenne végem olyan, mint az övék!
11 Akkor ezt mondta Bálák Bálámnak: Mit tettél velem?! Elhoztalak ellenségeim megrontására, te pedig megáldottad őket!
12 De ő ezt felelte: Nekem vigyáznom kell, hogy csak azt mondjam, amit az Úr ad a számba.
13 Akkor ezt mondta neki Bálák: Jöjj velem egy másik helyre, ahonnan láthatod azt a népet. De csak a szélét láthatod, az egészet nem látod. Onnan rontsd meg őket!
14 Magával vitte a Cófim mezejére, a Piszga csúcsára. Épített ott hét oltárt, és mindegyik oltáron bikát és kost áldozott.
15 Majd ezt mondta Báláknak: Állj ide égőáldozatod mellé, én pedig amott szeretnék találkozni Istennel.
16 Az Úr találkozott Bálámmal, igéjét adta a szájába, és ezt mondta: Térj vissza Bálákhoz, és eszerint beszélj.
17 Amikor visszament hozzá, még ott állt égőáldozata mellett Móáb vezető embereivel együtt. Bálák ezt kérdezte tőle: Mit mondott az Úr?
18 Ő pedig példabeszédbe kezdett, és ezt mondta: Hallgass csak rám, Bálák, figyelj ide, Cippór fia!
19 Nem ember az Isten, hogy hazudnék, nem embernek fia, hogy bármit megbánna. Mond-e olyat, amit meg ne tenne, ígér-e olyat, amit nem teljesít?
20 Áldásra kaptam parancsot, s ha ő áld, meg nem másíthatom.
21 Nem látnak bajt Jákóbban, nem látnak nyomorúságot Izráelben. Vele van Istene, az Úr, királynak szóló ujjongás hangzik benne.
22 Isten hozta ki őket Egyiptomból, olyan az ereje, mint a bivaly szarva.
23 Nem fog a varázslás Jákóbon, sem az igézet Izráelen. Idejében megmondják Jákóbnak, Izráelnek, hogy mit tesz az Isten.
24 Ez a nép mint nőstényoroszlán kel föl s mint hímoroszlán emelkedik föl, nem fekszik le, míg prédát nem eszik, és elejtettek vérét nem issza.
25 Akkor Bálák ezt mondta Bálámnak: Ha már nem tudod megrontani, legalább ne áldd meg!
26 De Bálám ezt felelte Báláknak: Megmondtam már neked, hogy csak azt fogom tenni, amit az Úr meghagy!
27 Akkor Bálák ezt mondta Bálámnak: Jöjj, elviszlek egy másik helyre! Talán jónak látja Isten, hogy onnan rontsd meg Izráelt.
28 Bálák tehát magával vitte Bálámot a Peór csúcsára, amely a síkságra néz.
29 Ott ezt mondta Bálám Báláknak: Építs itt hét oltárt, és készíts ide hét bikát meg hét kost.
30 Bálák megtette, amit Bálám mondott, és mindegyik oltáron bikát és kost áldozott.
Bálám Jákób csillagáról jövendöl
24 Amikor Bálám látta, hogy az tetszik az Úrnak, ha megáldja Izráelt, nem folyamodott többé varázsláshoz, mint azelőtt. A puszta felé fordította arcát,
2 és fölemelte Bálám a tekintetét. Amint meglátta Izráelt törzsenként sátorozni, rászállt az Isten Lelke,
3 példabeszédbe kezdett, és ezt mondta: Így szól Bálám, Beór fia, így szól az a férfi, kinek megnyílt a szeme,
4 így szól, aki hallja Isten mondásait, aki látja a Mindenhatótól kapott látomást leborulva, de nyitott szemekkel:
5 Mily szépek a te sátraid, Jákób, hajlékaid, ó Izráel!
6 Mint hosszan húzódó völgyek, mint folyó mentén a kertek, mint az Úr ültette aloék, mint víz mentén a cédrusok.
7 Kicsordul a víz vedreiből, vetése bő vizeknél van. Királya hatalmasabb Agágnál, és fölemelkedik királysága.
8 Isten hozta ki Egyiptomból, olyan az ereje mint a bivaly szarva. Nemzeteket emészt, akik szorongatják, szétmorzsolja csontjaikat, összetöri nyilaikat.
9 Hever, fekszik, mint a hímoroszlán, és mint nőstényoroszlán, ki meri fölkelteni? Áldott, aki téged áld, átkozott, aki téged átkoz!
10 Ekkor haragra gerjedt Bálák Bálám ellen, összecsapta a kezét, és ezt mondta Bálák Bálámnak: Idehívattalak ellenségeim megrontására, te pedig megáldottad már háromszor is!
11 Most azért takarodj a hazádba! Azt ígértem, hogy gazdagon megjutalmazlak, de most az Úr megfosztott téged a jutalomtól.
12 Bálám ezt felelte Báláknak: Megmondtam már követeidnek is, akiket hozzám küldtél,
13 hogy ha nekem adja Bálák a házát tele ezüsttel és arannyal, akkor sem szeghetem meg az Úr parancsát, és nem teszek magamtól sem jót, sem rosszat. Csak azt mondom, amit az Úr meghagy.
14 De most, amikor elmegyek népemhez, jöjj, föltárom még előtted, hogy mit fog tenni ez a nép a te népeddel a messze jövőben.
15 Példabeszédbe kezdett és ezt mondta: Így szól Bálám, Beór fia, így szól az a férfi, kinek megnyílt a szeme,
16 így szól, aki hallja Isten mondásait, aki ismeri a Felségestől jövő ismeretet, aki látja a Mindenhatótól kapott látomást leborulva, de nyitott szemekkel:
17 Látom őt, de nem most, szemlélem, de nem közel. Csillag jön fel Jákóbból, királyi pálca támad Izráelből. Bezúzza Móáb halántékát és Sét összes fiainak a koponyáját.
18 Birtokába kerül Edóm, birtokába kerül ellensége, Széír, mert hatalmasan cselekszik Izráel.
19 Eltapossa Jákób, még a városból menekülőket is elpusztítja.
20 Amikor meglátta Amálékot, példabeszédbe kezdett, és ezt mondta: Népek eleje Amálék, mégis pusztulás a vége.
21 Amikor meglátta a kénieket, példabeszédbe kezdett, és ezt mondta: Szilárd a te lakóhelyed, sziklára van rakva fészked.
22 Mégis megsemmisül Kain, amikor fogságba viszi Assúr.
23 Megint példabeszédbe kezdett, és ezt mondta: Ó jaj, ki élhet tovább, mint ahogy Isten megszabta?!
24 Hajók jönnek Kittim partjairól, megalázzák Assúrt, megalázzák Ébert, míg el nem pusztul az is.
25 Azután felkelt Bálám, elment és visszatért hazájába. Bálák is elment útjára.
Izráel paráznasága és bűnhődése
25 Amikor Izráel Sittimben tartózkodott, elkezdett a nép paráználkodni Móáb leányaival,
2 mert ezek meghívták a népet isteneik áldozatára. A nép ott evett, leborult azoknak az istenei előtt,
3 és odaszegődött Izráel Baal-Peórhoz. De haragra gerjedt az Úr Izráel ellen,
4 és ezt mondta az Úr Mózesnek: Fogasd el a nép minden főemberét, és akasztasd fel őket fényes nappal az Úr előtt, hogy elforduljon az Úr fölgerjedt haragja Izráeltől.
5 Mózes tehát ezt mondta Izráel bíráinak: Gyilkolja le mindenki a maga emberei közül azokat, akik Baal-Peórhoz szegődtek!
6 Éppen akkor jött egy izráeli ember, aki egy midjáni nőt hozott testvéreihez Mózes szeme láttára, meg Izráel egész közösségének a szeme láttára. Azok pedig sírtak a kijelentés sátrának a bejárata előtt.
7 Amikor meglátta ezt Fineás, Áron főpap fiának, Eleázárnak a fia, kilépett a közösség közül, dárdát fogott a kezébe,
8 bement az izráeli ember után a sátor belsejébe, és hasonszúrta mindkettőjüket, az izráeli embert és azt a nőt is. Ezzel elhárult a csapás Izráel fiairól.
9 Huszonnégyezer halottja lett a csapásnak.
