Sihon and Og Struck Down

21 (A)Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, saying, 22 (B)Let me pass through your land. We will not turn off into field or vineyard; we will not drink water from wells. We will go by the king’s highway until we have passed through your border.” 23 (C)But Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his border. So Sihon gathered all his people and went out to meet Israel in the wilderness and came to (D)Jahaz and fought against Israel. 24 Then (E)Israel [a]struck him with the edge of the sword and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the sons of Ammon; for the (F)border of the sons of Ammon was [b]Jazer.

26 (A)So I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying, 27 ‘Let me pass through your land, I will [a]go only on the highway; I will not turn aside to the right or to the left. 28 You will sell me food for money so that I may eat, and give me water for money so that I may drink; (B)only let me pass through on [b]foot, 29 just as the sons of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in (C)Ar did for me, until I cross over the Jordan into the land which Yahweh our God is giving to us.’ 30 But (D)Sihon king of Heshbon was not willing for us to pass [c]through his land, for (E)Yahweh your God stiffened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, in order to give him over into your hand, as he is today. 31 And Yahweh said to me, ‘See, I have begun to give Sihon and his land [d]over to you. Begin to possess, so that you may fully possess his land.’

32 “Then Sihon [e]with all his people came out to meet us in battle at Jahaz. 33 (F)But Yahweh our God gave him [f]over to us, and we (G)struck him down with his sons and all his people. 34 So we captured all his cities at that time and [g](H)devoted to destruction [h]the men, women, and little ones of every city. We left no survivor remaining. 35 We took (I)only the animals as our plunder and the spoil of the cities which we had captured. 36 From (J)Aroer which is on the edge of the [i]valley of Arnon and from the city which is in the [j]valley, even to Gilead, there was not a town that was too high for us; Yahweh our God gave all [k]over to us. 37 (K)Only you did not go near to the land of the sons of Ammon, all along the [l]river (L)Jabbok and the cities of the hill country, and wherever Yahweh our God had commanded us.

Israel Takes Possession of the Land

(M)Then we turned and went up the road to Bashan, and Og king of Bashan, [m]with all his people, came out to meet us in battle at Edrei. But Yahweh said to me, ‘Do not fear him, for I have given him and all his people and his land over into your hand; and you shall do to him just as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.’ So Yahweh our God also gave Og, king of Bashan, with all his people over into our hand, and we struck [n]them until [o]there was no survivor remaining for him. And we captured all his cities at that time; there was not a town which we did not take from them: sixty cities, all the region of (N)Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. All these were cities fortified with high walls, gates and bars, besides a great many [p]unwalled towns. And we [q]devoted them to destruction, as we did to (O)Sihon king of Heshbon, [r](P)devoting to destruction [s]the men, women, and little ones of every city. (Q)But all the animals and the spoil of the cities we took as our plunder.

(R)Thus we took the land at that time from the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, from the [t]valley of Arnon to Mount Hermon (Sidonians (S)call Hermon (T)Sirion, and the Amorites call it (U)Senir): 10 all the cities of the plateau and all Gilead and (V)all Bashan, as far as Salecah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 11 (For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of the (W)Rephaim. Behold, his [u]bedstead was an iron [v]bedstead; it is in (X)Rabbah of the sons of Ammon. Its length was [w]nine cubits, and its width four cubits [x]by ordinary cubit.)

12 “So we took possession of this land at that time. From (Y)Aroer, which is by the [y]valley of Arnon, and half the hill country of (Z)Gilead and its cities I gave to the Reubenites and to the Gadites. 13 And the rest of Gilead and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh, all the region of Argob. (Concerning all Bashan, it is called the land of Rephaim. 14 (AA)Jair the son of Manasseh took all the region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites and called [z]it—that is, Bashan—after his own name, [aa]Havvoth-jair, as it is to this day.) 15 (AB)And to Machir I gave Gilead. 16 And to the Reubenites and to the Gadites I gave from Gilead even as far as the [ab]valley of Arnon, the middle of the [ac]valley [ad]as a border and as far as the [ae]river (AC)Jabbok, the border of the sons of Ammon; 17 the Arabah also, with the Jordan [af]as a border, from [ag](AD)Chinnereth (AE)even as far as the sea of the Arabah, (AF)the Salt Sea, [ah]at the foot of the slopes of Pisgah on the east.
