Water from the Rock
20 In the first month the whole community of Israel came into the Desert of Zin, and they stayed at Kadesh. Miriam died and was buried there.
2 Since the community was without water, they came together to confront Moses and Aaron. 3 The people complained to Moses and said, “If only we had died when the other Israelites died in the Lord’s presence! 4 Did you bring the Lord’s assembly into this desert just to have us and our animals die here? 5 Why did you make us leave Egypt and bring us into this terrible place? This is no place to plant crops. Even figs, grapes, and pomegranates won’t grow here. And there’s no water to drink!”
6 Moses and Aaron went from the assembly to the entrance of the tent of meeting. Immediately, they bowed with their faces touching the ground, and the glory of the Lord appeared to them.
7 The Lord said to Moses, 8 “Take your staff, then you and your brother Aaron gather the community. Right before their eyes, tell the rock to give up its water. In this way you will give the community water from the rock for them and their animals to drink.”
9 Moses took his staff out of ⌞the tent in⌟ the Lord’s presence as he had been commanded. 10 Then Moses and Aaron assembled the community in front of the rock and said to them, “Listen, you rebels, must we bring water out of this rock for you?” 11 Moses raised his hand and hit the rock twice with the staff. Water came pouring out, and all the people and their animals drank.
12 But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “You didn’t trust me! You didn’t show the Israelites how holy I am! So you will not bring this congregation into the land I’m giving them.”
13 This was the oasis of Meribah [Complaining], where the Israelites complained about the Lord and where he showed them he was holy.
Edom Refuses to Allow Israel to Pass through Its Territory
14 Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom. He said, “This is what your brother Israel says: You know all the hardships we’ve had. 15 Our ancestors went to Egypt, and we lived there for many years. The Egyptians mistreated us and our ancestors. 16 When we cried out to the Lord, he heard us, sent a messenger, and brought us out of Egypt.
“Now we’re here in Kadesh, a city on the edge of your territory. 17 Please let us go through your country. We won’t go through any of your fields or vineyards, or drink any of the water from your wells. We’ll stay on the king’s highway and never leave it until we’ve passed through your territory.”
18 But the Edomites answered, “You may not pass through our country. If you try, we’ll come out and attack you.”
19 The Israelites replied, “We’ll stay on the main road, and if we or our livestock drink any of your water, we’ll pay for it. We want to pass through on foot. That’s all.”
20 But the Edomites said, “You may not pass through.” Then they came out and attacked with many well-armed troops. 21 Since the Edomites refused to let Israel go through their territory, the Israelites turned around and went a different way.

The Waters of Meribah
2 (C)Now there was no water for the congregation. (D)And they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron. 3 And the people (E)quarreled with Moses and said, “Would that we had perished (F)when our brothers perished before the Lord! 4 Why have you brought the assembly of the Lord into this wilderness, that we should die here, both we and our cattle? 5 And (G)why have you made us come up out of Egypt to bring us to this evil place? It is no place for grain or figs or vines or pomegranates, and there is no water to drink.” 6 Then Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the entrance of the tent of meeting and (H)fell on their faces. (I)And the glory of the Lord appeared to them, 7 and the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 8 (J)“Take the staff, and assemble the congregation, you and Aaron your brother, and tell the rock before their eyes to yield its water. So (K)you shall bring water out of the rock for them and give drink to the congregation and their cattle.” 9 And Moses took the staff (L)from before the Lord, as he commanded him.
Moses Strikes the Rock
10 Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, (M)“Hear now, you rebels: shall we bring water for you out of this rock?” 11 And Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice, (N)and water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their livestock. 12 And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because (O)you did not believe in me, (P)to uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them.” 13 (Q)These are the waters of Meribah,[a] where the people of Israel quarreled with the Lord, and through them he showed himself holy.
Edom Refuses Passage
14 (R)Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to (S)the king of Edom: “Thus says (T)your brother Israel: You know all the hardship that we have met: 15 (U)how our fathers went down to Egypt, (V)and we lived in Egypt a long time. (W)And the Egyptians dealt harshly with us and our fathers. 16 And (X)when we cried to the Lord, he heard our voice and (Y)sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt. And here we are in Kadesh, a city on the edge of your territory. 17 (Z)Please let us pass through your land. We will not pass through field or vineyard, (AA)or drink water from a well. We will go along the King's Highway. We will not turn aside to the right hand or to the left until we have passed through your territory.” 18 But Edom said to him, “You shall not pass through, lest I come out with the sword against you.” 19 And the people of Israel said to him, “We will go up by the highway, (AB)and if we drink of your water, I and my livestock, (AC)then I will pay for it. Let me only pass through on foot, nothing more.” 20 But he said, (AD)“You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out against them with a large army and with a strong force. 21 Thus Edom (AE)refused to give Israel passage through his territory, so Israel (AF)turned away from him.

Edom rehúsa dar paso a Israel

No pasaremos por labranza, ni por viña, ni beberemos agua de pozos; por el camino real iremos, sin apartarnos a diestra ni a siniestra, hasta que hayamos pasado tu territorio. 18 Edom le respondió: No pasarás por mi país; de otra manera, saldré contra ti armado. 19 Y los hijos de Israel dijeron: Por el camino principal iremos; y si bebiéremos tus aguas yo y mis ganados, daré el precio de ellas; déjame solamente pasar a pie, nada más. 20 Pero él respondió: No pasarás. Y salió Edom contra él con mucho pueblo, y mano fuerte. 21 No quiso, pues, Edom dejar pasar a Israel por su territorio, y se desvió Israel de él.

5 и для чего вывели вы нас из Египта, чтобы привести нас на это негодное место, где нельзя сеять, нет ни смоковниц, ни винограда, ни гранатовых яблок, ни даже воды для питья?
6 И пошел Моисей и Аарон от народа ко входу скинии собрания, и пали на лица свои, и явилась им слава Господня.

8 Возьми жезл и собери общество, ты и Аарон, брат твой, и скажите в глазах их скале, и она даст из себя воду: и так ты изведешь им воду из скалы, и напоишь общество и скот его.
9 И взял Моисей жезл от лица Господа, как Он повелел ему.
10 И собрали Моисей и Аарон народ к скале, и сказал он им: послушайте, непокорные, разве нам из этой скалы извести для вас воду?
11 И поднял Моисей руку свою и ударил в скалу жезлом своим дважды, и потекло много воды, и пило общество и скот его.
12 И сказал Господь Моисею и Аарону: за то, что вы не поверили Мне, чтоб явить святость Мою пред очами сынов Израилевых, не введете вы народа сего в землю, которую Я даю ему.
13 Это вода Меривы, у которой вошли в распрю сыны Израилевы с Господом, и Он явил им святость Свою.
14 И послал Моисей из Кадеса послов к Царю Едомскому [сказать]: так говорит брат твой Израиль: ты знаешь все трудности, которые постигли нас;

18 Но Едом сказал ему: не проходи через меня, иначе я с мечом выступлю против тебя.
19 И сказали ему сыны Израилевы: мы пойдем большою дорогою, и если будем пить твою воду, я и скот мой, то буду платить за нее; только ногами моими пройду, что ничего не стоит.
20 Но он сказал: не проходи. И выступил против него Едом с многочисленным народом и с сильною рукою.
21 Итак не согласился Едом позволить Израилю пройти чрез его пределы, и Израиль пошел в сторону от него.

2 And there was no water for the congregation: and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.
3 And the people chode with Moses, and spake, saying, Would God that we had died when our brethren died before the Lord!
4 And why have ye brought up the congregation of the Lord into this wilderness, that we and our cattle should die there?
5 And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.
6 And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces: and the glory of the Lord appeared unto them.
7 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
8 Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.
9 And Moses took the rod from before the Lord, as he commanded him.
10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?
11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.
12 And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.
13 This is the water of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with the Lord, and he was sanctified in them.

15 How our fathers went down into Egypt, and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians vexed us, and our fathers:

17 Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country: we will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king's high way, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy borders.

19 The experts in Moses’ Teachings and the chief priests wanted to arrest him right there, but they were afraid of the people. They knew that he had directed this illustration at them.
A Question about Taxes(A)
20 So they watched for an opportunity to send out some spies. The spies were to act like sincere religious people. They wanted to catch him saying the wrong thing so that they could hand him over to the governor. 21 They asked him, “Teacher, we know that you’re right in what you say and teach. Besides, you don’t play favorites. Rather, you teach the way of God truthfully. 22 Is it right for us to pay taxes to the emperor or not?”
23 He saw through their scheme, so he said to them, 24 “Show me a coin. Whose face and name is this?”
They answered, “The emperor’s.”
25 He said to them, “Well, then give the emperor what belongs to the emperor, and give God what belongs to God.”
26 They couldn’t make him say anything wrong in front of the people. His answer surprised them, so they said no more.
The Dead Come Back to Life(B)
27 Some Sadducees, who say that people will never come back to life, came to Jesus. They asked him, 28 “Teacher, Moses wrote for us, ‘If a married man dies and has no children, his brother should marry his widow and have children for his brother.’ 29 There were seven brothers. The first got married and died without having children. 30 Then the second brother married the widow, 31 and so did the third. In the same way all seven brothers married the widow, died, and left no children. 32 Finally, the woman died. 33 Now, when the dead come back to life, whose wife will she be? The seven brothers had married her.”
34 Jesus said to them, “In this world people get married. 35 But people who are considered worthy to come back to life and live in the next world will neither marry 36 nor die anymore. They are the same as the angels. They are God’s children who have come back to life.
37 “Even Moses showed in the passage about the bush that the dead come back to life. He says that the Lord is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 38 He’s not the God of the dead but of the living. In God’s sight all people are living.”
39 Some experts in Moses’ Teachings responded, “Teacher, that was well said.” 40 From that time on, no one dared to ask him another question.
How Can David’s Son Be David’s Lord?(C)
41 Jesus said to them, “How can people say that the Messiah is David’s son? 42 David says in the book of Psalms,
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Take the honored position—the one next to me [God the Father] on the heavenly throne—
43 until I put your enemies under your control.” ’
44 David calls him Lord. So how can he be his son?”

Paying Taxes to Caesar
19 (A)The scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him at that very hour, for they perceived that he had told this parable against them, but they feared the people. 20 (B)So they (C)watched him and sent spies, who (D)pretended to be sincere, that they might (E)catch him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of (F)the governor. 21 So they asked him, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and (G)show no partiality,[a] but truly teach (H)the way of God. 22 Is it lawful for us to give (I)tribute to (J)Caesar, or not?” 23 But he perceived their (K)craftiness, and said to them, 24 “Show me (L)a denarius.[b] Whose likeness and inscription does it have?” They said, “Caesar's.” 25 He said to them, “Then (M)render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” 26 And they were not able in the presence of the people (N)to catch him in what he said, but marveling at his answer they became silent.
Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection
27 There came to him (O)some Sadducees, (P)those who deny that there is a resurrection, 28 and they asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us (Q)that if a man's brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man[c] must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died without children. 30 And the second 31 and the third took her, and likewise all seven left no children and died. 32 Afterward the woman also died. 33 In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had her as wife.”

41 (AJ)But he said to them, “How can they say that (AK)the Christ is (AL)David's son? 42 For David himself says in the Book of Psalms,

“Sit at my right hand,
43 until I make your enemies (AN)your footstool.”’
44 David thus calls him Lord, so (AO)how is he his son?”

19 И искали в это время первосвященники и книжники, чтобы наложить на Него руки, но побоялись народа, ибо поняли, что о них сказал Он эту притчу.
20 И, наблюдая за Ним, подослали лукавых людей, которые, притворившись благочестивыми, уловили бы Его в каком-либо слове, чтобы предать Его начальству и власти правителя.
21 И они спросили Его: Учитель! мы знаем, что Ты правдиво говоришь и учишь и не смотришь на лице, но истинно пути Божию учишь;
22 позволительно ли нам давать подать кесарю, или нет?
23 Он же, уразумев лукавство их, сказал им: что вы Меня искушаете?
24 Покажите Мне динарий: чье на нем изображение и надпись? Они отвечали: кесаревы.
25 Он сказал им: итак, отдавайте кесарево кесарю, а Божие Богу.
26 И не могли уловить Его в слове перед народом, и, удивившись ответу Его, замолчали.
27 Тогда пришли некоторые из саддукеев, отвергающих воскресение, и спросили Его:
28 Учитель! Моисей написал нам, что если у кого умрет брат, имевший жену, и умрет бездетным, то брат его должен взять его жену и восставить семя брату своему.
29 Было семь братьев, первый, взяв жену, умер бездетным;
30 взял ту жену второй, и тот умер бездетным;
31 взял ее третий; также и все семеро, и умерли, не оставив детей;
32 после всех умерла и жена;
33 итак, в воскресение которого из них будет она женою, ибо семеро имели ее женою?
34 Иисус сказал им в ответ: чада века сего женятся и выходят замуж;
35 а сподобившиеся достигнуть того века и воскресения из мертвых ни женятся, ни замуж не выходят,
36 и умереть уже не могут, ибо они равны Ангелам и суть сыны Божии, будучи сынами воскресения.
37 А что мертвые воскреснут, и Моисей показал при купине, когда назвал Господа Богом Авраама и Богом Исаака и Богом Иакова.
38 Бог же не есть [Бог] мертвых, но живых, ибо у Него все живы.
39 На это некоторые из книжников сказали: Учитель! Ты хорошо сказал.
40 И уже не смели спрашивать Его ни о чем. Он же сказал им:
41 как говорят, что Христос есть Сын Давидов,
42 а сам Давид говорит в книге псалмов: сказал Господь Господу моему: седи одесную Меня,
43 доколе положу врагов Твоих в подножие ног Твоих?
44 Итак, Давид Господом называет Его; как же Он Сын ему?

19 And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.
20 And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.
21 And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly:
22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no?
23 But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me?
24 Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Caesar's.
25 And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's.
26 And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.
27 Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him,
28 Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
29 There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.
30 And the second took her to wife, and he died childless.
31 And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died.
32 Last of all the woman died also.
33 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife.
34 And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:
35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:
36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.
37 Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
38 For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.
39 Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said.
40 And after that they durst not ask him any question at all.
41 And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David's son?
42 And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
43 Till I make thine enemies thy footstool.
44 David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son?
