Валаам і моавський цар
22 Тоді вирушили люди Ізраїлю і стали табором на рівнинах Моаву по той бік Йордану від Єрихона.
2 Валак, син Зиппора, побачив усе те, що Ізраїль зробив з аморійцями. 3 Моав дуже злякався того народу, бо були вони численні. Моав тремтів перед народом Ізраїлю.
4 І сказав Моав старійшинам мидіанців: «Зараз ця сила-силенна люду повинищує все довкола нас, немов віл, що поїдає всю траву на пасовиську».
Валак, син Зиппора був царем Моаву того часу. 5 Він послав людей до Валаама, сина Беора в Петорі, що над рікою Євфрат, у землі родичів його[a], щоб запросити їх. І сказали вони:
«Поглянь, народ вийшов із Єгипту, поглянь, вони вкрили всю землю й таборилися біля мене. 6 Тож, прийди й прокляни цей народ за мене, бо вони дужчі за мене. Можливо, я спроможуся напасти на них і вигнати їх із землі. Бо знаю, що кого ти благословиш, той благословенний, кого ти клянеш—проклятий».
7 Старійшини Моаву й старійшини Мидіану прийшли з платнею за службу. Прийшли вони до Валаама й переповіли, що сказав Валак. 8 І Валак відповів їм: «Залишайтеся тут сьогодні ввечері, я відповім вам, що Господь мені скаже». Тож старійшини Моаву лишилися з Валаамом.
9 Бог явився Валааму і запитав: «Що то за люди в тебе?»
10 Валаам відповів Богу: «Валак, син Зиппора, цар Моаву, вирядив їх до мене з посланням. 11 Поглянь, народ вийшов із Єгипту і вкрив землю. Тож прийди прокляни їх. Можливо, я спроможуся воювати з ними й вижену їх».
12 Тоді Бог сказав Валааму: «Не йди з ними. Не проклинай цей народ, бо він благословенний».
13 Тож Валаам устав вранці і сказав старійшинам Валака: «Повертайтеся до своєї землі, бо Господь не дозволив мені йти з вами».
14 Старійшини з Моаву повернулися до Валака. І сказали вони: «Валаам відмовився йти з нами».
15 І знову послав Валак старійшин, численніших і поважніших за попередніх. 16 Пішли вони до Валаама і сказали йому: «Ось що Валак, син Зиппора сказав: „Прошу, нехай ніщо не зашкодить тобі прийти до мене. 17 Я вельми вшаную тебе[b] і зроблю все, що ти скажеш. Будь ласка, прийди і прокляни народ цей за мене”».
18 Тоді Валаам відповів посланцям Валака: «Навіть коли б Валак віддав мені дім свій, повний срібла і золота, я не міг би переступити наказ Господа Бога мого, не міг би вчинити ні мале, ні велике. 19 Але, будь ласка, лишайтеся тут сьогодні, як і інші раніше, і я дізнаюся, що Господь мені скаже».
20 Тієї ночі Бог явився Валааму і сказав йому: «Якщо ці люди прийшли, щоб запросити тебе піти з ними, піднімись і йди з ними, але ти мусиш робити тільки те, що Я тобі накажу».
Валаам і ослиця
21 Тож Валаам підвівся вранці і осідлав свою ослицю. І пішов він з вождями Моаву. 22 Гнів Господній розгорівся за те, що він пішов. Тож Ангел Господній став перед ним на дорозі, щоб зупинити[c] його. Валаам їхав на ослиці. З ним було двоє його слуг. 23 Коли ослиця побачила Ангела Господнього, що стояв на дорозі з оголеним мечем у руці, вона звернула з дороги й пішла полем. Валаам ударив ослицю, щоб примусити її знову повернути на дорогу.
24 Тоді Ангел Господній став на вузькій стежинці між двома виноградниками з огорожею по обидва боки. 25 Коли побачила ослиця Ангела Господнього, притиснулася до огорожі й придавила ногу Валаама, тож він знову вдарив її.
26 Тоді Ангел Господній знову пішов уперед і зупинився у вузькому місці, де неможливо було звернути ні праворуч, ані ліворуч. 27 Побачивши Ангела Господнього, ослиця лягла під Валаамом. Валаам розгнівався і вдарив ослицю палицею.
28 Тоді Господь розтулив рота ослиці, і вона сказала Валааму: «Що я тобі зробила, що ти тричі вдарив мене?»
29 Валаам відповів ослиці: «Бо ти збиткуєшся з мене. Коли б був у мене в руці меч, я б зараз же вбив тебе».
30 Тоді ослиця сказала Валааму: «Хіба я не твоя ослиця, на якій ти їздив усе життя своє аж до цього дня? Хіба я тебе колись підводила?» І Валаам відповів: «Ні».
31 Тоді Господь розкрив очі Валааму, і той побачив Ангела Господнього, що стояв на дорозі, тримаючи оголений меч у руці. Тож він схилив голову і впав долілиць.
32 Тоді Ангел Господній сказав йому: «Чому ти тричі вдарив свою ослицю? Поглянь, я сам прийшов, щоб зупинити тебе, бо путь твоя хибна для Мене. 33 Коли ослиця побачила Мене, вона звертала від Мене тричі. Якби вона не звернула від Мене, Я б тебе, безумовно, вже давно вбив, а її б лишив живою».
34 Тоді Валаам сказав Ангелу Господньому: «Я згрішив, бо не знав, що Ти стоїш на дорозі, щоб зупинити мене. Але зараз, якщо це не подобається тобі, я поверну назад».
35 То Ангел Господній сказав Валааму: «Йди з цими людьми, але говори тільки те, що Я накажу тобі». Тож Валаам пішов із вождями Моаву.
36 Коли Валак почув, що Валаам наближається, він вийшов йому назустріч у місто Ір-Моав[d], що при самісінькому моавському кордоні, що його утворює ріка Арнон. 37 Валак сказав Валааму: «Хіба я не посилав по тебе? Чому ти не приходив до мене? Хіба я не здатний вшанувати тебе?»
38 Тоді Валаам відповів Валаку: «Дивись, ось я прийшов до тебе. Хіба можу я промовити хоч щось? Я казатиму те, що Бог вкладає в уста мої».
39 І пішов Валаам з Валаком і прийшли вони до Киріат-Гузота. 40 Валак приніс у жертву велику рогату худобу й овець і послав пожертву Валааму та старійшинам, що були з ним.
41 Вранці взяв Валак Валаама й привів його до Бамот-Ваала. Звідти він міг побачити частину народу Ізраїлю.
Перше Валаамове послання
23 Валаам сказав Валаку: «Споруди мені тут сім жертовників і приготуй мені семеро волів і семеро баранців». 2 Валак зробив, як сказав Валаам. І Валак, і Валаам принесли по волу та по баранові на кожному вівтарі.
3 Тоді Валаам сказав Валаку: «Стань біля своєї жертви всеспалення, а я піду, можливо Господь вийде на зустріч зі мною. Хоч би що Він мені сказав, я розповім тобі». Тож пішов він на голу верхівку гори.
4 Бог явився Валааму, і той сказав Йому: «Я спорудив сім жертовників і приніс по волу та по баранові на кожному вівтарі».
5 Господь вклав слова в уста Валааму, мовлячи: «Повертайся до Валака і скажи це йому».
6 Тож Валаам повернувся до нього, аж ось Валах стоїть біля своєї жертви всеспалення разом з усіма старійшинами Моаву. 7 Тож Валаам мовив пророцтво своє:
«Привів мене Валак, моавський цар
з Арама, зі східних гір:
„Приходь, і Якова за мене прокляни.
Приходь, ганьбою вкрий Ізраїль”.
8 Та як я можу клясти тих,
кого Господь не проклинає?
Як можу я зганьбити тих,
кого не зганьбив Господь?
9 З гірських вершин я бачу їх,
і з пагорбів дивлюся я на них.
Вони ж бо той народ, який живе окремо
і не вважає себе одним із інших.
10 Хто здатний полічити Якова народ?
Вони численні, наче той пісок.
Хто може чверть Ізраїлю бодай порахувати?
Нехай я помру смертю праведника,
нехай кінець мій буде, як у них!»
11 Валак сказав Валааму: «Що ти зробив зі мною? Я тебе привів, щоби проклясти ворогів моїх, а ти їх взяв і благословив».
12 А Валаам відповів йому: «Чи не мушу я ретельно передати те, що Господь вклав в уста мої?»
13 Тоді Валак сказав йому: «Ходімо зі мною в інше місце, звідки ти зможеш побачити їх. Ти побачиш лише частину їх. Усіх їх ти не побачиш. Прокляни їх для мене звідти».
14 Тож узяв він Валаама на поле Зофима на верхівці Пізґи. І спорудив він сім жертовників, і приніс вола й барана на кожному вівтарі. 15 І сказав він Валаку: «Стань поряд зі своєю жертвою всеспалення тут, поки я піду зустрітися з Господом».
16 Явився Господь Валааму, вклав слова в уста йому і сказав: «Повернись до Валака і скажи це йому».
17 Отже, повернувся Валаам до Валака, аж той стоїть там біля своєї жертви всеспалення з усіма старійшинами Моаву. І запитав його Валак: «Що сказав Господь?»
Друге Валаамове послання
18 І мовив Валаам своє пророцтво:
«Устань, Валаку, і слухай.
Почуй мене, о сину Зиппорів.
19 Бог не людина, що неправду каже,
не син людський, що рішення міняє.
Чи мовить він, а потім те не зробить?
Чи обіцяє і не виконує?
20 Отримав я наказ благословити.
Він благословив, тож не спроможний я змінити це.
21 Не буде Якову невдачі.
Не буде лиха для Ізраїлю.
Господь Бог його з ним.
Його, як царя, серед них величають.
22 Бог, Який із Єгипту їх вивів,
для них, мов буйвол дужий.
23 Немає жодних чар проти Якова.
Немає жодного чаклунства проти Ізраїлю.
То кажуть про Якова і про Ізраїль:
„Погляньте, що Бог зробив!”
24 Встає народ цей, мов левиця,
немов той лев, вони встають.
Не ляже він, аж поки здобичі не з’їсть,
і не нап’ється крові тих, кого убив».
25 Тоді Валак сказав Валааму: «Не проклинай їх, але ж і не благословляй!»
26 Валаам відповів Валаку: «Хіба не казав я тобі: „Я зроблю все, що Господь мені звелить?”»
27 Отже, Валак сказав Валааму: «Ходімо, я відведу тебе до іншого місця. Може, воно задовольнить Господа, і ти проклянеш їх звіти». 28 Тож Валак привів Валаама на верхівку гори Пеор, оберненої до пустелі.
29 Тоді Валаам промовив до Валака: «Споруди для мене сім жертовників тут і приготуй для мене семеро волів і семеро баранів». 30 Тож Валак зробив, як сказав Валам і приніс він вола й барана на кожному вівтарі.
Третє Валаамове послання
24 Валаам побачив, що то добре в Господніх очах—благословити Ізраїль, тоді не вдався він до віщування, як попередні рази, а повернувся обличчям до пустелі. 2 Валаам підвів очі й побачив Ізраїль, який стояв табором за колінами своїми. Тоді зійшов на нього Дух Божий, 3 і промовив він пророцтво своє:
«Це слово Валаама, сина Беора,
слово того, чиї ясно очі бачать,
4 слово того, хто чує Боже слово,
хто з’яви Бога Всемогутнього[e] бачить,
хто падає перед Ним,
але з розплющеними очима.
5 Які намети гарні в тебе, Якове!
Оселі твої, о Ізраїлю!
6 Ряди наметів простяглися, наче пальми,
немов сади понад рікою,
немов алое, Господом насаджене,
немов ті кедри при воді.
7 Вода точиться з віття їхнього,
насіння напилося води досхочу.
Цар їхній могутніший за Аґаґа,
і царство їхнє піднесеться високо.
8 Бог вивів їх з Єгипту.
Він для них, неначе буйвол дужий.
Вони пожеруть ворогів своїх,
потрощать кістки їхні і знищать їхні стріли.
9 Немов той лев, вони крадуться й спочивають,
немов левиця, яку ніхто не розбудить.
Благословенний той, хто благословляє тебе,
проклятий той, хто тебе проклинає».
10 Розгнівався Валак на Валаама і сплеснув руками. І сказав Валак Валааму: «Я покликав тебе проклясти ворогів моїх, але ось ти вже тричі благословив їх. 11 Тож забирайтеся геть додому! Я казав, що вшаную тебе, але ж Господь не дав тобі отримати таку честь».
12 І відповів Валаам Валаку: «Хіба ж я не казав посланцям твоїм, яких ти посилав до мене: 13 „Якщо навіть Валак віддасть мені свій палац, повний срібла й золота, я не переступлю наказу Господа і не вчиню ні доброго, ні злого з власної волі, а мушу казати те, що Господь говорить?” 14 Тож тепер я повертаюся до народу мого, тож скажу я тобі, що цей народ з твоїм народом зробить у майбутньому».
Останнє Валаамове послання
15 Отже, промовив він пророцтво своє:
«Це слово Валаама, сина Беора,
слово того, чиї очі бачать ясно,
16 слово того, хто чує слова Божі,
хто від Всевишнього має знання.
Він бачить у з’явах Всемогутнього,
падає перед Ним, але очі його розплющені.
17 Я бачу Його, та не зараз. Я бачу Його, та не поруч.
Вийде з Якова[f] зірка. Здійметься берло з Ізраїлю.
Потрощить Він голови Моаву
поб’є лоби всіх дітей шетійців.
18 Едом стане власністю їхньою,
Сеїр[g], ворог їхній, належати їм буде,
бо Ізраїль легкий на хоробрі вчинки.
19 Вийде з Якова правитель
і знищить тих, хто лишиться по тих містах».
20 Потім Валаам побачив амаликійців і промовив пророцтво своє:
«Хоч і були амаликійці першими серед народів,
а остаточне знищення—ось такий у них кінець».
21 Побачив він кенітів і промовив пророцтво своє:
«Безпечна оселя твоя,
гніздо[h] твоє високо на скелі.
22 Та загинуть кеніти,
коли Ассирія в полон вас візьме».
23 Тоді промовив Валаам своє пророцтво:
«Хто ж виживе, якщо Господь таке вчинить?
24 Кораблі прийдуть від берегів Киттиму
і вразять Ассирію та Евер[i]».
25 Встав Валаам і пішов додому, а Валак пішов своєю дорогою.
Ізраїль у Пеорі
25 Народ Ізраїлю став табором в Шиттимі, й чоловіки вдалися до розпусти[j] з моавськими жінками. 2 Ті запрошували чоловіків приєднатися до жертв їхнім богам. Тож народ їв ці жертви, й вони поклонялися хибним богам. 3 Так Ізраїль почав поклонятися Ваал-Пеору. І розгнівався Господь на Ізраїль.
4 І сказав Господь Мойсею: «Візьми всіх вождів народу й повісь їх привселюдно перед Господом[k]. Тоді гнів Господній відвернеться від Ізраїлю».
5 І сказав Мойсей суддям Ізраїлю: «Кожен із вас мусить убити тих ваших людей, що стали вклонятися Ваал-Пеору».
6 Якраз тоді прийшов один із синів Ізраїлю і привів братам[l] своїм мидіанку на очах Мойсея і всього народу Ізраїлю, що плакав при вході до намету зібрання. 7 Коли Фінегас, син Елеазара, сина священика Аарона, побачив це, він вийшов із зібрання і взяв списа. 8 Він пішов слідом за тим ізраїльтянином у її намет. І пробив він обох і ізраїльтянина, й мидіанку в живіт. Тоді припинилася страшна пошесть серед людей Ізраїлю. 9 Двадцять чотири тисячі чоловік померло від тієї моровиці.
10 І сказав Господь Мойсею: 11 «Фінегас, син Елеазара, сина священика Аарона, врятував народ Ізраїлю від гніву Мого, бо в їхньому середовищі так само розлютився, як Я. Тож Я не вигубив народ Ізраїлю у гніві Своєму. 12 Через це оголоси: „Я укладаю з ним мирну Угоду. 13 Ось ця угода: і він, і нащадки його, що після нього, завжди будуть священиками, оскільки Він за свого Бога розлютився і спокутував за народ Ізраїлю”».
14 Ім’я ізраїльтянина, вбитого разом з мидіанкою, було Зимрі, син Салу, голови роду в коліні Симеона. 15 Ім’я вбитої мидіанки було Козбі[m], дочка Зура, який був вождем одного з мидіанських племен.
16 І сказав Господь Мойсею: 17 «Станьте ворогами мидіанцям і повбивайте їх, 18 бо вони були ворожі до вас, обдуривши вас Пеором і сестрою їхньою Козбі, дочкою вождя свого, жінкою, вбитою під час моровиці через те, що сталося в Пеорі».

Balak Summons Balaam
22 Then the Israelites traveled to the plains of Moab(A) and camped along the Jordan(B) across from Jericho.(C)
2 Now Balak son of Zippor(D) saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites, 3 and Moab was terrified because there were so many people. Indeed, Moab was filled with dread(E) because of the Israelites.
4 The Moabites(F) said to the elders of Midian,(G) “This horde is going to lick up everything(H) around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.(I)”
So Balak son of Zippor, who was king of Moab at that time, 5 sent messengers to summon Balaam son of Beor,(J) who was at Pethor, near the Euphrates River,(K) in his native land. Balak said:
“A people has come out of Egypt;(L) they cover the face of the land and have settled next to me. 6 Now come and put a curse(M) on these people, because they are too powerful for me. Perhaps then I will be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land.(N) For I know that whoever you bless is blessed, and whoever you curse is cursed.”
7 The elders of Moab and Midian left, taking with them the fee for divination.(O) When they came to Balaam, they told him what Balak had said.
8 “Spend the night here,” Balaam said to them, “and I will report back to you with the answer the Lord gives me.(P)” So the Moabite officials stayed with him.
9 God came to Balaam(Q) and asked,(R) “Who are these men with you?”
10 Balaam said to God, “Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent me this message: 11 ‘A people that has come out of Egypt covers the face of the land. Now come and put a curse on them for me. Perhaps then I will be able to fight them and drive them away.’”
12 But God said to Balaam, “Do not go with them. You must not put a curse on those people, because they are blessed.(S)”
13 The next morning Balaam got up and said to Balak’s officials, “Go back to your own country, for the Lord has refused to let me go with you.”
14 So the Moabite officials returned to Balak and said, “Balaam refused to come with us.”
15 Then Balak sent other officials, more numerous and more distinguished than the first. 16 They came to Balaam and said:
“This is what Balak son of Zippor says: Do not let anything keep you from coming to me, 17 because I will reward you handsomely(T) and do whatever you say. Come and put a curse(U) on these people for me.”
18 But Balaam answered them, “Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything great or small to go beyond the command of the Lord my God.(V) 19 Now spend the night here so that I can find out what else the Lord will tell me.(W)”
20 That night God came to Balaam(X) and said, “Since these men have come to summon you, go with them, but do only what I tell you.”(Y)
Balaam’s Donkey
21 Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey and went with the Moabite officials. 22 But God was very angry(Z) when he went, and the angel of the Lord(AA) stood in the road to oppose him. Balaam was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him. 23 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with a drawn sword(AB) in his hand, it turned off the road into a field. Balaam beat it(AC) to get it back on the road.
24 Then the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path through the vineyards, with walls on both sides. 25 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it pressed close to the wall, crushing Balaam’s foot against it. So he beat the donkey again.
26 Then the angel of the Lord moved on ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn, either to the right or to the left. 27 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it lay down under Balaam, and he was angry(AD) and beat it with his staff. 28 Then the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth,(AE) and it said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?(AF)”
29 Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made a fool of me! If only I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.(AG)”
30 The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?”
“No,” he said.
31 Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes,(AH) and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with his sword drawn. So he bowed low and fell facedown.
32 The angel of the Lord asked him, “Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? I have come here to oppose you because your path is a reckless one before me.[a] 33 The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If it had not turned away, I would certainly have killed you by now,(AI) but I would have spared it.”
34 Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, “I have sinned.(AJ) I did not realize you were standing in the road to oppose me. Now if you are displeased, I will go back.”
35 The angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but speak only what I tell you.” So Balaam went with Balak’s officials.
36 When Balak(AK) heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at the Moabite town on the Arnon(AL) border, at the edge of his territory. 37 Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not send you an urgent summons? Why didn’t you come to me? Am I really not able to reward you?”
38 “Well, I have come to you now,” Balaam replied. “But I can’t say whatever I please. I must speak only what God puts in my mouth.”(AM)
39 Then Balaam went with Balak to Kiriath Huzoth. 40 Balak sacrificed cattle and sheep,(AN) and gave some to Balaam and the officials who were with him. 41 The next morning Balak took Balaam up to Bamoth Baal,(AO) and from there he could see the outskirts of the Israelite camp.(AP)
Balaam’s First Message
23 Balaam said, “Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams(AQ) for me.” 2 Balak did as Balaam said, and the two of them offered a bull and a ram on each altar.(AR)
3 Then Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your offering while I go aside. Perhaps the Lord will come to meet with me.(AS) Whatever he reveals to me I will tell you.” Then he went off to a barren height.
4 God met with him,(AT) and Balaam said, “I have prepared seven altars, and on each altar I have offered a bull and a ram.”
5 The Lord put a word in Balaam’s mouth(AU) and said, “Go back to Balak and give him this word.”(AV)
6 So he went back to him and found him standing beside his offering, with all the Moabite officials.(AW) 7 Then Balaam(AX) spoke his message:(AY)
“Balak brought me from Aram,(AZ)
the king of Moab from the eastern mountains.(BA)
‘Come,’ he said, ‘curse Jacob for me;
come, denounce Israel.’(BB)
8 How can I curse
those whom God has not cursed?(BC)
How can I denounce
those whom the Lord has not denounced?(BD)
9 From the rocky peaks I see them,
from the heights I view them.(BE)
I see a people who live apart
and do not consider themselves one of the nations.(BF)
10 Who can count the dust of Jacob(BG)
or number even a fourth of Israel?
Let me die the death of the righteous,(BH)
and may my final end be like theirs!(BI)”
11 Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I brought you to curse my enemies,(BJ) but you have done nothing but bless them!”(BK)
12 He answered, “Must I not speak what the Lord puts in my mouth?”(BL)
Balaam’s Second Message
13 Then Balak said to him, “Come with me to another place(BM) where you can see them; you will not see them all but only the outskirts of their camp.(BN) And from there, curse them for me.(BO)” 14 So he took him to the field of Zophim on the top of Pisgah,(BP) and there he built seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.(BQ)
15 Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your offering while I meet with him over there.”
16 The Lord met with Balaam and put a word in his mouth(BR) and said, “Go back to Balak and give him this word.”
17 So he went to him and found him standing beside his offering, with the Moabite officials.(BS) Balak asked him, “What did the Lord say?”
18 Then he spoke his message:(BT)
“Arise, Balak, and listen;
hear me, son of Zippor.(BU)
19 God is not human,(BV) that he should lie,(BW)
not a human being, that he should change his mind.(BX)
Does he speak and then not act?
Does he promise(BY) and not fulfill?
20 I have received a command to bless;(BZ)
he has blessed,(CA) and I cannot change it.(CB)
21 “No misfortune is seen in Jacob,(CC)
no misery observed[b] in Israel.(CD)
The Lord their God is with them;(CE)
the shout of the King(CF) is among them.
22 God brought them out of Egypt;(CG)
they have the strength of a wild ox.(CH)
23 There is no divination against[c] Jacob,
no evil omens(CI) against[d] Israel.
It will now be said of Jacob
and of Israel, ‘See what God has done!’
24 The people rise like a lioness;(CJ)
they rouse themselves like a lion(CK)
that does not rest till it devours its prey
and drinks the blood(CL) of its victims.”
25 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Neither curse them at all nor bless them at all!”
26 Balaam answered, “Did I not tell you I must do whatever the Lord says?”(CM)
Balaam’s Third Message
27 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Come, let me take you to another place.(CN) Perhaps it will please God to let you curse them for me(CO) from there.” 28 And Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor,(CP) overlooking the wasteland.
29 Balaam said, “Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me.” 30 Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.(CQ)
24 Now when Balaam saw that it pleased the Lord to bless Israel,(CR) he did not resort to divination(CS) as at other times, but turned his face toward the wilderness.(CT) 2 When Balaam looked out and saw Israel encamped tribe by tribe, the Spirit of God came on him(CU) 3 and he spoke his message:
“The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor,
the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,(CV)
4 the prophecy of one who hears the words of God,(CW)
who sees a vision from the Almighty,[e](CX)
who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:
5 “How beautiful are your tents,(CY) Jacob,
your dwelling places, Israel!
6 “Like valleys they spread out,
like gardens beside a river,(CZ)
like aloes(DA) planted by the Lord,
like cedars beside the waters.(DB)
7 Water will flow from their buckets;
their seed will have abundant water.
8 “God brought them out of Egypt;
they have the strength of a wild ox.
They devour hostile nations
and break their bones in pieces;(DE)
with their arrows they pierce them.(DF)
9 Like a lion they crouch and lie down,
like a lioness(DG)—who dares to rouse them?
10 Then Balak’s anger burned(DJ) against Balaam. He struck his hands together(DK) and said to him, “I summoned you to curse my enemies,(DL) but you have blessed them(DM) these three times.(DN) 11 Now leave at once and go home!(DO) I said I would reward you handsomely,(DP) but the Lord has kept you from being rewarded.”
12 Balaam answered Balak, “Did I not tell the messengers you sent me,(DQ) 13 ‘Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the Lord(DR)—and I must say only what the Lord says’?(DS) 14 Now I am going back to my people, but come, let me warn you of what this people will do to your people in days to come.”(DT)
Balaam’s Fourth Message
15 Then he spoke his message:
“The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor,
the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,
16 the prophecy of one who hears the words(DU) of God,
who has knowledge from the Most High,(DV)
who sees a vision from the Almighty,
who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:
17 “I see him, but not now;
I behold him, but not near.(DW)
A star will come out of Jacob;(DX)
a scepter will rise out of Israel.(DY)
He will crush the foreheads of Moab,(DZ)
the skulls[f](EA) of[g] all the people of Sheth.[h]
18 Edom(EB) will be conquered;
Seir,(EC) his enemy, will be conquered,(ED)
but Israel(EE) will grow strong.
19 A ruler will come out of Jacob(EF)
and destroy the survivors of the city.”
Balaam’s Fifth Message
20 Then Balaam saw Amalek(EG) and spoke his message:
“Amalek was first among the nations,
but their end will be utter destruction.”(EH)
Balaam’s Sixth Message
21 Then he saw the Kenites(EI) and spoke his message:
“Your dwelling place is secure,(EJ)
your nest is set in a rock;
22 yet you Kenites will be destroyed
when Ashur(EK) takes you captive.”
Balaam’s Seventh Message
23 Then he spoke his message:
“Alas! Who can live when God does this?[i]
24 Ships will come from the shores of Cyprus;(EL)
they will subdue Ashur(EM) and Eber,(EN)
but they too will come to ruin.(EO)”
25 Then Balaam(EP) got up and returned home, and Balak went his own way.
Moab Seduces Israel
25 While Israel was staying in Shittim,(EQ) the men began to indulge in sexual immorality(ER) with Moabite(ES) women,(ET) 2 who invited them to the sacrifices(EU) to their gods.(EV) The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods. 3 So Israel yoked themselves to(EW) the Baal of Peor.(EX) And the Lord’s anger burned against them.
4 The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders(EY) of these people, kill them and expose(EZ) them in broad daylight before the Lord,(FA) so that the Lord’s fierce anger(FB) may turn away from Israel.”
5 So Moses said to Israel’s judges, “Each of you must put to death(FC) those of your people who have yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor.”(FD)
6 Then an Israelite man brought into the camp a Midianite(FE) woman right before the eyes of Moses and the whole assembly of Israel while they were weeping(FF) at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 7 When Phinehas(FG) son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear(FH) in his hand 8 and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the woman’s stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped;(FI) 9 but those who died in the plague(FJ) numbered 24,000.(FK)
10 The Lord said to Moses, 11 “Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites.(FL) Since he was as zealous for my honor(FM) among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. 12 Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace(FN) with him. 13 He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood,(FO) because he was zealous(FP) for the honor(FQ) of his God and made atonement(FR) for the Israelites.”(FS)
14 The name of the Israelite who was killed with the Midianite woman(FT) was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family.(FU) 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was put to death was Kozbi(FV) daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family.(FW)
16 The Lord said to Moses,(FX) 17 “Treat the Midianites(FY) as enemies(FZ) and kill them.(GA) 18 They treated you as enemies when they deceived you in the Peor incident(GB) involving their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, the woman who was killed when the plague came as a result of that incident.”
