⁶ Moses sent them into battle,^(A) a thousand from each tribe, along with Phinehas^(B) son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary^(C) and the trumpets^(D) for signaling.

⁴⁴ Nevertheless, in their presumption they went up^(A) toward the highest point in the hill country, though neither Moses nor the ark of the Lord’s covenant moved from the camp.^(B)

⁸ “The sons of Aaron, the priests, are to blow the trumpets. This is to be a lasting ordinance for you and the generations to come.^{(A) 9} When you go into battle in your own land against an enemy who is oppressing you,^(B) sound a blast on the trumpets.^(C) Then you will be remembered^(D) by the Lord your God and rescued from your enemies.^(E)

¹² God is with us; he is our leader. His priests with their trumpets will sound the battle cry against you.^(A) People of Israel, do not fight against the Lord,^(B) the God of your ancestors, for you will not succeed.”^(C)

¹³ Now Jeroboam had sent troops around to the rear, so that while he was in front of Judah the ambush^(D) was behind them. ¹⁴ Judah turned and saw that they were being attacked at both front and rear. Then they cried out^(E) to the Lord. The priests blew their trumpets ¹⁵ and the men of Judah raised the battle cry. At the sound of their battle cry, God routed Jeroboam and all Israel^(F) before Abijah and Judah.

¹¹ Uriah said to David, “The ark^(A) and Israel and Judah are staying in tents,^[a] and my commander Joab and my lord’s men are camped in the open country. How could I go to my house to eat and drink and make love^(B) to my wife? As surely as you live, I will not do such a thing!”

⁹ When David learned that Saul was plotting against him, he said to Abiathar^(A) the priest, “Bring the ephod.^(B)”

¹⁸ Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring^(A) the ark^(B) of God.” (At that time it was with the Israelites.)^[a]

¹⁷ The man who brought the news replied, “Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead,^(A) and the ark of God has been captured.”^(B)

⁴ So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim.^(A) And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

⁵ When the ark of the Lord’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel raised such a great shout^(B) that the ground shook.
