^64 (A)But among these there was not a man of those who were numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest when they numbered the children of Israel in the ^(B)Wilderness of Sinai.

¹⁴ And the time we took to come ^(A)from Kadesh Barnea until we crossed over the Valley of the Zered was thirty-eight years, ^(B)until all the generation of the men of war ^[a]was consumed from the midst of the camp, ^(C)just as the Lord had sworn to them. ¹⁵ For indeed the hand of the Lord was against them, to destroy them from the midst of the camp until they ^[b]were consumed.

¹⁷ Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, ^(A)whose corpses fell in the wilderness?

⁵ But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies ^(A)were scattered in the wilderness.

³ Your eyes have seen what the Lord did at ^(A)Baal Peor; for the Lord your God has destroyed from among you all the men who followed Baal of Peor. ⁴ But you who held fast to the Lord your God are alive today, every one of you.

²⁹ The carcasses of you who have complained against Me shall fall in this wilderness, ^(A)all of you who were numbered, according to your entire number, from twenty years old and above.

The First Census of Israel^(A)

1 Now the Lord spoke to Moses ^(B)in the Wilderness of Sinai, ^(C)in the tabernacle of meeting, on the ^(D)first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying: ^2 (E)“Take a census of all the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, every male ^(F)individually,
