³³ And your sons shall ^(A)be ^[a]shepherds in the wilderness ^(B)forty years, and ^(C)bear the brunt of your infidelity, until your carcasses are consumed in the wilderness.

³⁵ “Therefore thus says the Lord God:

¹³ So the Lord’s anger was aroused against Israel, and He made them ^(A)wander in the wilderness forty years, until ^(B)all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the Lord was gone.

¹⁴ And the time we took to come ^(A)from Kadesh Barnea until we crossed over the Valley of the Zered was thirty-eight years, ^(B)until all the generation of the men of war ^[a]was consumed from the midst of the camp, ^(C)just as the Lord had sworn to them.

Judgment of Israel’s Sin

⁴⁵ But righteous men will ^(A)judge them after the manner of adulteresses, and after the manner of women who shed blood, because they are adulteresses, and ^(B)blood is on their hands.

⁴⁶ “For thus says the Lord God: ^(C)‘Bring up an assembly against them, give them up to trouble and plunder. ^47 (D)The assembly shall stone them with stones and ^[a]execute them with their swords; ^(E)they shall slay their sons and their daughters, and burn their houses with fire. ⁴⁸ Thus ^(F)I will cause lewdness to cease from the land, ^(G)that all women may be taught not to practice your lewdness. ⁴⁹ They shall repay you for your lewdness, and you shall ^(H)pay for your idolatrous sins. ^(I)Then you shall know that I am the Lord God.’ ”
