² “Has the Lord spoken only through Moses?” they asked. “Hasn’t he also spoken through us?”^(A) And the Lord heard this.^(B)

¹² Then you will know that I the Lord have heard all the contemptible things you have said against the mountains of Israel. You said, “They have been laid waste and have been given over to us to devour.^(A)” ¹³ You boasted^(B) against me and spoke against me without restraint, and I heard it.^(C)

⁴ It may be that the Lord your God will hear the words of the field commander, whom his master, the king of Assyria, has sent to ridicule^(A) the living God,^(B) and that he will rebuke him for the words the Lord your God has heard.^(C) Therefore pray^(D) for the remnant^(E) that still survives.”

Fire From the Lord

11 Now the people complained^(A) about their hardships in the hearing of the Lord,^(B) and when he heard them his anger was aroused.^(C) Then fire from the Lord burned among them^(D) and consumed^(E) some of the outskirts of the camp.

⁵ In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves^(A) to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility^(B) toward one another, because,

¹⁴ Do everything without grumbling^(A) or arguing,

³ Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.^(A) Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,^(B)
