David Enrolls the Fighting Men(A)

24 Again(B) the anger of the Lord burned against Israel,(C) and he incited David against them, saying, “Go and take a census of(D) Israel and Judah.”

48 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 49 “Only the tribe of Levi you shall not enroll, and you shall not take a census of them with the other Israelites. 50 Rather, you shall appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the covenant and over all its equipment and over all that belongs to it; they are to carry the tabernacle and all its equipment, and they shall tend it and shall camp around the tabernacle.(M) 51 When the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down, and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up. And any outsider who comes near shall be put to death.(N) 52 The other Israelites shall camp in their respective regimental camps, by companies,(O) 53 but the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the covenant, that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the Israelites, and the Levites shall perform the duties of the tabernacle of the covenant.”(P) 54 The Israelites did so; they did just as the Lord commanded Moses.

47 The ancestral tribe of the Levites,(Y) however, was not counted(Z) along with the others. 48 The Lord had said to Moses: 49 “You must not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the census of the other Israelites. 50 Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the tabernacle(AA) of the covenant law(AB)—over all its furnishings(AC) and everything belonging to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they are to take care of it and encamp around it. 51 Whenever the tabernacle(AD) is to move,(AE) the Levites are to take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall do it.(AF) Anyone else who approaches it is to be put to death.(AG) 52 The Israelites are to set up their tents by divisions, each of them in their own camp under their standard.(AH) 53 The Levites, however, are to set up their tents around the tabernacle(AI) of the covenant law so that my wrath will not fall(AJ) on the Israelite community. The Levites are to be responsible for the care of the tabernacle of the covenant law.(AK)

54 The Israelites did all this just as the Lord commanded Moses.
