3 Guai alla città sanguinaria, che è tutta piena di frode e di violenza e che non cessa di far preda!
2 Schioccar di frusta, strepito assordante di ruote, di cavalli al galoppo e di carri sobbalzanti,
3 cavalieri alla carica, spade fiammeggianti lance sfolgoranti, una moltitudine di uccisi, un gran numero di morti, cadaveri senza fine, si inciampa nei cadaveri.
4 Tutto questo a motivo delle molte prostituzioni della seducente prostituta, maestra nelle arti magiche che vendeva le nazioni con le sue prostituzioni e i popoli con le sue arti magiche.
5 «Ecco, io sono contro di te», dice l'Eterno degli eserciti, «io alzerò i lembi della tua veste fin sulla faccia e mostrerò alle nazioni la tua nudità e ai regni la tua vergogna.
6 Ti getterò addosso lordure, ti renderò spregevole e ti esporrò alla berlina.
7 Avverrà che tutti quelli che ti vedranno fuggiranno da te e diranno: "Ninive è devastata! Chi la compiangerà?" Dove ti cercherò dei consolatori?».
8 Sei tu piú bella di No Amon, che si trova tra i canali del Nilo, circondata dalle acque, che aveva il mare per baluardo e il mare per mura?
9 L'Etiopia e l'Egitto erano la sua forza e non aveva confini, Put, e i Libici erano i suoi alleati.
10 Eppure anch'essa è stata deportata, è andata in cattività; anche i suoi bambini sono stati sfracellati all'imbocco di ogni strada; hanno gettato le sorti sui suoi nobili e tutti i suoi grandi sono stati legati con catene.
11 Tu pure sarai ubriaca e ti nasconderai; tu pure cercherai un luogo fortificato davanti al nemico.
12 Tutte le tue fortezze saranno come piante di fico con fichi primaticci; se sono scossi, cadono in bocca di chi li mangia.
13 Ecco, le tue truppe in mezzo a te sono come donne; le porte del tuo paese sono spalancate davanti ai tuoi nemici, il fuoco ha divorato le sbarre delle tue porte.
14 Attingi per te l'acqua necessaria per l'assedio, rinforza le tue fortificazioni entra nell'argilla, pesta la malta, ripara la fornace per mattoni.
15 Là il fuoco ti divorerà, la spada ti distruggerà; ti divorerà come una larva di cavalletta; moltiplicati come le larve di cavallette, moltiplicati come le cavallette.
16 Hai moltiplicato i tuoi mercati piú delle stelle del cielo; le larve di cavallette spogliano ogni cosa e volano via.
17 I tuoi principi sono come le cavallette, i tuoi ufficiali come sciami di locuste che si fermano tra le siepi in giorno di freddo; ma quando sorge il sole volano via, e non si sa in quale posto siano andate.
18 O re d'Assiria, i tuoi pastori dormono, i tuoi nobili riposano; il tuo popolo è disperso sui monti e nessuno li raduna.
19 Non c'è rimedio per la tua fatica, la tua piaga è mortale; tutti quelli che udranno parlare di te, batteranno mani sulla tua sorte. Su chi infatti non è passata continuamente la tua malvagità?

Causa della distruzione di Ninive
3 (A)Guai alla città sanguinaria, piena di menzogna e di violenza, che non cessa di depredare!
2 Si ode rumore di fruste, frastuono di ruote, galoppo di cavalli, sobbalzare di carri.
3 I cavalieri danno la carica, fiammeggiano le spade, sfolgorano le lance, abbondano i feriti, si ammucchiano i cadaveri, sono infiniti i morti, si inciampa nei cadaveri.
4 Questo a causa delle tante fornicazioni dell’avvenente prostituta, dell’abile incantatrice, che vendeva le nazioni con le sue fornicazioni e i popoli con i suoi incantesimi.
5 «Eccomi a te», dice il Signore degli eserciti; «io alzerò i lembi della tua veste fin sulla tua faccia e mostrerò alle nazioni la tua nudità, ai regni la tua vergogna.
6 Ti getterò addosso delle immondizie, ti umilierò e ti esporrò allo scherno.
7 Tutti quelli che ti vedranno fuggiranno lontano da te e diranno: “Ninive è distrutta! Chi la compiangerà?” Dove ti cercherò dei consolatori?»
8 Sei forse migliore di No-Amon[a], che stava seduta tra i fiumi, circondata dalle acque, che aveva il mare per baluardo, il mare per mura?
9 L’Etiopia e l’Egitto erano la sua forza che non aveva limiti; Put e i Libici erano i suoi alleati.
10 Eppure, anch’essa è stata deportata, è andata in esilio; anche i suoi bambini sono stati sfracellati a ogni angolo di strada. I suoi nobili sono stati estratti a sorte e tutti i suoi grandi sono stati messi in catene.
11 Tu pure sarai ubriacata e andrai a nasconderti; tu pure cercherai un rifugio davanti al nemico.
12 Tutte le tue fortezze saranno come alberi di fico dai frutti primaticci, che, quando sono scossi, cadono in bocca a chi li vuol mangiare.
13 Ecco il tuo popolo: in mezzo a te sono solo donne; le porte del tuo paese sono spalancate davanti ai tuoi nemici, il fuoco ha divorato le tue sbarre.
14 Attingi pure acqua per l’assedio! Rinforza le tue difese! Pesta la malta, impasta l’argilla! Ripara la fornace!
15 Là il fuoco ti divorerà, la spada ti distruggerà; ti divorerà come la cavalletta, fossi tu pur numerosa come le cavallette, fossi tu pur numerosa come le locuste.
16 Tu hai moltiplicato i tuoi mercanti più delle stelle del cielo; sono come le cavallette che spogliano ogni cosa e volano via.
17 I tuoi prìncipi sono come le locuste, i tuoi ufficiali come sciami di giovani locuste, che si accampano lungo le siepi nei giorni freddi e, quando spunta il sole, volano via e non si riconosce più il posto dov’erano.
18 O re d’Assiria, i tuoi pastori si sono addormentati, i tuoi valorosi ufficiali riposano; il tuo popolo è disperso su per i monti e non c’è nessuno che lo riunisca.
19 Non c’è rimedio per la tua ferita, la tua piaga è grave; tutti quelli che udranno parlare di te batteranno le mani per la tua sorte. Su chi infatti non è passata la tua malvagità senza fine?

Sentenza su Ninive la prostituta
3 Guai alla città sanguinaria,
piena di menzogne,
colma di rapine,
che non cessa di depredare!
2 Sibilo di frusta, fracasso di ruote,
scalpitio di cavalli, cigolio di carri,
3 cavalieri incalzanti, lampeggiare di spade,
scintillare di lance, feriti in quantità,
cumuli di morti, cadaveri senza fine,
s'inciampa nei cadaveri.
4 Per le tante seduzioni della prostituta,
della bella maliarda, della maestra d'incanti,
che faceva mercato dei popoli con le sue tresche
e delle nazioni con le sue malìe.
5 Eccomi a te, oracolo del Signore degli eserciti.
Alzerò le tue vesti fin sulla faccia
e mostrerò alle genti la tua nudità,
ai regni le tue vergogne.
6 Ti getterò addosso immondezze,
ti svergognerò, ti esporrò al ludibrio.
7 Allora chiunque ti vedrà, fuggirà da te
e dirà: «Ninive è distrutta!». Chi la compiangerà?
Dove cercherò chi la consoli?
L'esempio di Tebe
8 Sei forse più forte di Tebe,
seduta fra i canali del Nilo,
circondata dalle acque?
Per baluardo aveva il mare
e per bastione le acque.
9 L'Etiopia e l'Egitto erano la sua forza
che non aveva limiti.
Put e i Libi erano i suoi alleati.
10 Eppure anch'essa fu deportata,
andò schiava in esilio.
Anche i suoi bambini furono sfracellati
ai crocicchi di tutte le strade.
Sopra i suoi nobili si gettarono le sorti
e tutti i suoi grandi furon messi in catene.
11 Anche tu berrai fino alla feccia e verrai meno,
anche tu cercherai scampo dal nemico.
Inutilità dei preparativi di Ninive
12 Tutte le tue fortezze sono come fichi
carichi di frutti primaticci:
appena scossi, cadono i fichi
in bocca a chi li vuol mangiare.
13 Ecco il tuo popolo: in te vi sono solo donne,
spalancano la porta della tua terra ai nemici,
il fuoco divora le tue sbarre.
14 Attingi acqua per l'assedio, rinforza le tue difese,
pesta l'argilla, impasta mattoni, prendi la forma.
15 Eppure il fuoco ti divorerà,
ti sterminerà la spada,
L'invio delle cavallette
anche se ti moltiplicassi come le cavallette,
se diventassi numerosa come i bruchi,
16 e moltiplicassi i tuoi mercenari
più che le stelle del cielo.
La locusta mette le ali e vola via!
17 I tuoi prìncipi sono come le locuste,
i tuoi capi come sciami di cavallette,
che si annidano fra le siepi quand'è freddo,
ma quando spunta il sole si dileguano
e non si sa dove siano andate.
Lamento funebre
18 Re d'Assur, i tuoi pastori dormono,
si riposano i tuoi eroi!
Il tuo popolo vaga sbandato per i monti
e nessuno lo raduna.
19 Non c'è rimedio per la tua ferita,
incurabile è la tua piaga.
Chiunque sentirà tue notizie batterà le mani.
Perchè su chi non si è riversata
senza tregua la tua crudeltà?

3 Woe to the city of blood,(A)
full of lies,(B)
full of plunder,
never without victims!
2 The crack of whips,
the clatter of wheels,
galloping horses
and jolting chariots!
3 Charging cavalry,
flashing swords
and glittering spears!
Many casualties,
piles of dead,
bodies without number,
people stumbling over the corpses(C)—
4 all because of the wanton lust of a prostitute,
alluring, the mistress of sorceries,(D)
who enslaved nations by her prostitution(E)
and peoples by her witchcraft.
5 “I am against(F) you,” declares the Lord Almighty.
“I will lift your skirts(G) over your face.
I will show the nations your nakedness(H)
and the kingdoms your shame.
6 I will pelt you with filth,(I)
I will treat you with contempt(J)
and make you a spectacle.(K)
7 All who see you will flee(L) from you and say,
‘Nineveh(M) is in ruins(N)—who will mourn for her?’(O)
Where can I find anyone to comfort(P) you?”
8 Are you better than(Q) Thebes,(R)
situated on the Nile,(S)
with water around her?
The river was her defense,
the waters her wall.
9 Cush[a](T) and Egypt were her boundless strength;
Put(U) and Libya(V) were among her allies.
10 Yet she was taken captive(W)
and went into exile.
Her infants were dashed(X) to pieces
at every street corner.
Lots(Y) were cast for her nobles,
and all her great men were put in chains.(Z)
11 You too will become drunk;(AA)
you will go into hiding(AB)
and seek refuge from the enemy.
12 All your fortresses are like fig trees
with their first ripe fruit;(AC)
when they are shaken,
the figs(AD) fall into the mouth of the eater.
13 Look at your troops—
they are all weaklings.(AE)
The gates(AF) of your land
are wide open to your enemies;
fire has consumed the bars of your gates.(AG)
14 Draw water for the siege,(AH)
strengthen your defenses!(AI)
Work the clay,
tread the mortar,
repair the brickwork!
15 There the fire(AJ) will consume you;
the sword(AK) will cut you down—
they will devour you like a swarm of locusts.
Multiply like grasshoppers,
multiply like locusts!(AL)
16 You have increased the number of your merchants
till they are more numerous than the stars in the sky,
but like locusts(AM) they strip the land
and then fly away.
17 Your guards are like locusts,(AN)
your officials like swarms of locusts
that settle in the walls on a cold day—
but when the sun appears they fly away,
and no one knows where.
18 King of Assyria, your shepherds[b] slumber;(AO)
your nobles lie down to rest.(AP)
Your people are scattered(AQ) on the mountains
with no one to gather them.
19 Nothing can heal you;(AR)
your wound is fatal.
All who hear the news about you
clap their hands(AS) at your fall,
for who has not felt

2 The noise of a whip, and the noise of the rattling of the wheels, and of the pransing horses, and of the jumping chariots.
3 The horseman lifteth up both the bright sword and the glittering spear: and there is a multitude of slain, and a great number of carcases; and there is none end of their corpses; they stumble upon their corpses:
4 Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the wellfavoured harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts.
5 Behold, I am against thee, saith the Lord of hosts; and I will discover thy skirts upon thy face, and I will shew the nations thy nakedness, and the kingdoms thy shame.

9 Ethiopia and Egypt were her strength, and it was infinite; Put and Lubim were thy helpers.
10 Yet was she carried away, she went into captivity: her young children also were dashed in pieces at the top of all the streets: and they cast lots for her honourable men, and all her great men were bound in chains.
11 Thou also shalt be drunken: thou shalt be hid, thou also shalt seek strength because of the enemy.
12 All thy strong holds shall be like fig trees with the firstripe figs: if they be shaken, they shall even fall into the mouth of the eater.
13 Behold, thy people in the midst of thee are women: the gates of thy land shall be set wide open unto thine enemies: the fire shall devour thy bars.
14 Draw thee waters for the siege, fortify thy strong holds: go into clay, and tread the morter, make strong the brickkiln.
15 There shall the fire devour thee; the sword shall cut thee off, it shall eat thee up like the cankerworm: make thyself many as the cankerworm, make thyself many as the locusts.
16 Thou hast multiplied thy merchants above the stars of heaven: the cankerworm spoileth, and fleeth away.
17 Thy crowned are as the locusts, and thy captains as the great grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun ariseth they flee away, and their place is not known where they are.
18 Thy shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria: thy nobles shall dwell in the dust: thy people is scattered upon the mountains, and no man gathereth them.
19 There is no healing of thy bruise; thy wound is grievous: all that hear the bruit of thee shall clap the hands over thee: for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually?
