Sự Tận Diệt Ðã Cận Kề
3 Này, hỡi thành gây đổ máu,
Nơi có toàn dối gian lừa đảo,
Nơi của cướp bóc chất đầy,
Nơi không hề thiếu các nạn nhân.
2 Tiếng roi vun vút,
Tiếng bánh xe chiến mã rầm rầm,
Tiếng vó ngựa phi dồn dập,
Tiếng xe chiến mã rền vang!
3 Các kỵ binh xông tới,
Vung gươm lên và phóng giáo ra,
Số người bị giết nhiều vô kể,
Xác người nằm la liệt,
Xác chết không sao đếm hết,
Người ta suýt ngã vì vấp các xác chết,
4 Vì vô số tội dâm ô của con điếm đầy sức quyến rũ, nữ hoàng của tà thuật,
Kẻ đã làm cho nhiều quốc gia bị lệ thuộc vào thói dâm ô của nó, và các dân đã bị tà thuật của nó mê hoặc.

Ta sẽ tìm đâu ra người an ủi ngươi?
8 Ngươi há tốt hơn Nô A-môn[a] bên bờ Sông Nin,
Một thành có nước bao bọc chung quanh,
Chiến lũy của nó là biển,
Tường thành của nó là nước chăng?
9 Ê-thi-ô-pi và Ai-cập là sức mạnh của nó,
Thật là một sức mạnh vô biên;
Pút và Li-by-a là những kẻ hỗ trợ nó.
10 Thế mà nó vẫn bị lưu đày;
Nó đã bị bắt làm tù binh, phải bị đày biệt xứ,
Ngay các con thơ của nó cũng bị đập chết nơi các đầu đường,
Các nhà quý tộc của nó đã phải bắt thăm để bị phạt,

11 Cũng thế, ngươi sẽ bị say khướt,
Ngươi sẽ trốn chui trốn nhủi,
Ngươi sẽ tìm một nơi trốn tránh sự lùng kiếm của quân thù.
12 Tất cả các đồn lũy của ngươi sẽ giống như những cây vả, đầy những trái chín đầu mùa;
Nếu chúng bị rung, trái của chúng sẽ rơi vào miệng người ăn.
13 Này, quân đội của ngươi!
Chúng như một đám phụ nữ ở giữa ngươi;
Cổng các quan ải của ngươi mở toang cho quân thù của ngươi tiến vào;
Lửa thiêu đốt các thanh cài cổng thành của ngươi.
14 Hãy tích trữ nước để chuẩn bị cho ngày bị vây hãm,
Hãy củng cố các chiến lũy của ngươi,
Hãy nhào đất sét, trộn hồ, và đúc gạch để xây các công sự phòng thủ.
15 Tại đó lửa sẽ thiêu rụi ngươi,
Gươm đao sẽ giết chết ngươi.
Nó sẽ ăn nuốt ngươi như đàn cào cào cắn phá,
Cho dù ngươi có gia tăng đông đúc như cào cào,
Hay gia tăng rất đông như châu chấu.
16 Ngươi đã làm cho số thương gia của ngươi đông hơn sao trên trời;
Nhưng như đàn cào cào, chúng ăn rụi các hoa màu, rồi bay đi mất.
17 Các tướng tá của ngươi tựa như đàn châu chấu,
Các sĩ quan của ngươi như đám cào cào,
Chúng đậu sát bên nhau trên các hàng rào để sống còn trong ngày đông buốt giá.
Khi mặt trời mọc lên, chúng cất cánh bay đi;
Và không ai biết chúng đã bay về phương nào.
18 Hỡi vua A-sy-ri, những kẻ chăn dắt dân ngươi đang ngủ say,
Những kẻ quyền thế trong dân ngươi đang ngủ gà ngủ gật.
Dân ngươi đang bị tan lạc trên các núi đồi,
Nhưng chẳng có người nào nhóm hiệp chúng lại.
19 Chẳng có gì có thể làm dịu bớt nỗi đau đớn của ngươi;
Vết thương của ngươi là vết thương chí tử.

3 Woe (judgment is coming) to the city of blood [guilty of murder and mayhem], completely full of lies and pillage;
Her prey never departs [alive].(A)

The noise of the [cracking of the] whip,
The noise of the rattling of the wheel,
Galloping horses
And rumbling and bounding chariots [in the assault of Nineveh]!
3
Horsemen charging,
Swords flashing, spears gleaming,
Many slain, a mass of corpses,
No end of corpses—
The horsemen stumble over the corpses!
4
All because of the many acts of prostitution of [Nineveh] the prostitute,
The charming and well-favored one, the mistress of sorceries,
Who betrays nations by her acts of prostitution (idolatry)
And families by her sorceries.

“Behold, I am against you,” declares the Lord of hosts,
“And I will lift up your skirts over your face,
And I will let the nations look at your nakedness [O Nineveh]
And the kingdoms at your disgrace.
6
“I will throw filth on you
And make you vile and treat you with contempt,
And set you up as a spectacle.
7
“And it will come about that all who see you
Will shrink back and run from you and say,
‘Nineveh is completely ruined!
Who will grieve for her?’
Where will I seek comforters for you?”
8
Are you better than [a]Thebes,
Which was situated by the waters of the Nile,
With water surrounding her,
Whose defense was the sea (the Nile),
Whose wall consisted of the sea?
9
Ethiopia was her strength,
And Egypt too, without limits.
[b]Put and Lubim were among her helpers.
10
Yet she became an exile;
She went into captivity.
Her young children were dashed to pieces
At the head of every street;
They cast lots for her honorable men,
And all her great men were bound with chains.
11
You too [Nineveh] will become drunk [with the cup of God’s wrath];
You will be hidden.
You too [Nineveh] will search [in vain] for a refuge from the enemy.
12
All your fortresses are [nothing but] fig trees with ripe figs—
When shaken they fall into the mouth of the eater.
13
Behold, your people are [as weak and helpless as] women in your midst!
The gates of your land are opened wide to your enemies;
Fire consumes the bars across your gates.
14
Draw water for a [long, continued] siege!
Strengthen your fortresses!
Go down to the clay pits, trample the mortar!
Prepare the brick kiln [to burn bricks for the rampart]!
15
But there [in the very midst of these preparations] the fire will devour you;
The sword will cut you down;
It will devour you as the locust does.
Multiply yourself like the creeping locusts;
Multiply yourself like the swarming locusts.
16
You have increased your traders more than the [visible] stars of heaven—
The creeping locust strips and destroys and then flies away.
17
Your guardsmen are like the swarming locusts.
Your marshals are like the hordes of grasshoppers
Settling in the stone walls on a cold day.
When the sun rises, they fly away,
And no one knows the place where they are.
18
Your shepherds are asleep, O king of Assyria;
Your nobles are lying down [in death].
Your people are scattered on the mountains
And there is no one to gather them.
19
There is no relief and healing for your hurt;
Your wound is incurable.
All who hear the news about you
Clap their hands over [what has happened to] you.
For on whom has your [unceasing] evil not come continually?

Woe to Nineveh
3 Woe to the city of blood,(A)
full of lies,(B)
full of plunder,
never without victims!
2 The crack of whips,
the clatter of wheels,
galloping horses
and jolting chariots!
3 Charging cavalry,
flashing swords
and glittering spears!
Many casualties,
piles of dead,
bodies without number,
people stumbling over the corpses(C)—
4 all because of the wanton lust of a prostitute,
alluring, the mistress of sorceries,(D)
who enslaved nations by her prostitution(E)
and peoples by her witchcraft.
5 “I am against(F) you,” declares the Lord Almighty.
“I will lift your skirts(G) over your face.
I will show the nations your nakedness(H)
and the kingdoms your shame.
6 I will pelt you with filth,(I)
I will treat you with contempt(J)
and make you a spectacle.(K)
7 All who see you will flee(L) from you and say,
‘Nineveh(M) is in ruins(N)—who will mourn for her?’(O)
Where can I find anyone to comfort(P) you?”
8 Are you better than(Q) Thebes,(R)
situated on the Nile,(S)
with water around her?
The river was her defense,
the waters her wall.
9 Cush[a](T) and Egypt were her boundless strength;
Put(U) and Libya(V) were among her allies.
10 Yet she was taken captive(W)
and went into exile.
Her infants were dashed(X) to pieces
at every street corner.
Lots(Y) were cast for her nobles,
and all her great men were put in chains.(Z)
11 You too will become drunk;(AA)
you will go into hiding(AB)
and seek refuge from the enemy.
12 All your fortresses are like fig trees
with their first ripe fruit;(AC)
when they are shaken,
the figs(AD) fall into the mouth of the eater.
13 Look at your troops—
they are all weaklings.(AE)
The gates(AF) of your land
are wide open to your enemies;
fire has consumed the bars of your gates.(AG)
14 Draw water for the siege,(AH)
strengthen your defenses!(AI)
Work the clay,
tread the mortar,
repair the brickwork!
15 There the fire(AJ) will consume you;
the sword(AK) will cut you down—
they will devour you like a swarm of locusts.
Multiply like grasshoppers,
multiply like locusts!(AL)
16 You have increased the number of your merchants
till they are more numerous than the stars in the sky,
but like locusts(AM) they strip the land
and then fly away.
17 Your guards are like locusts,(AN)
your officials like swarms of locusts
that settle in the walls on a cold day—
but when the sun appears they fly away,
and no one knows where.
18 King of Assyria, your shepherds[b] slumber;(AO)
your nobles lie down to rest.(AP)
Your people are scattered(AQ) on the mountains
with no one to gather them.
19 Nothing can heal you;(AR)
your wound is fatal.
All who hear the news about you
clap their hands(AS) at your fall,
for who has not felt
your endless cruelty?(AT)
