26 El SEÑOR les dijo a Moisés y a Eleazar hijo del sacerdote Aarón: «Hagan un censo de todos los israelitas, por familias, en el que se registren los hombres de 20 años en adelante, aptos para el servicio militar».

Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar hablaron con los israelitas en las llanuras de Moab a la orilla del río Jordán frente a Jericó. Les dijeron: «Hagan un censo del pueblo, censen a todos los hombres de 20 años en adelante, tal como el SEÑOR le ordenó a Moisés». Los israelitas que salieron de Egipto fueron los siguientes:

de Jezrón, el jezronita y de Carmí, el carmita.

Esos eran los grupos familiares de Rubén los cuales tenían, de acuerdo al censo, 43 730 hombres.

Eliab era hijo de Falú. Los hijos de Eliab eran Nemuel, Datán y Abirán; estos dos últimos fueron los mismos Datán y Abirán, que habían sido elegidos por la comunidad, pero que se rebelaron contra Moisés y Aarón. Ellos se unieron a Coré y su grupo cuando él se rebeló contra el SEÑOR. 10 En esa ocasión la tierra abrió su boca y se los tragó a ellos y a Coré. También murieron sus seguidores cuando el fuego quemó a los 250 hombres. Así que todo esto sirvió de advertencia al pueblo. 11 Sin embargo, los hijos de Coré no murieron.

12 Los descendientes de Simeón por grupos familiares, eran estos:

de Nemuel desciende el grupo familiar nemuelita;

de Jamín, el jaminita;

de Jaquín, el jaquinita;

13 de Zera, el zeraíta

y de Saúl el saulita.

14 Esos eran los grupos familiares de Simeón los cuales tenían, de acuerdo al censo, 22 200 hombres.

15 Los descendientes de Gad por sus grupos familiares, eran estos:

de Zefón desciende el grupo familiar zefonita;

de Jaguí, el jaguita;

de Suni, el sunita;

16 de Ozni, el oznita;

de Erí, el erita;

17 de Arodí, el arodita;

de Arelí, el arelita.

18 Esos eran los grupos familiares de Gad los cuales tenían, de acuerdo al censo, 40 500 hombres.

19 De los hijos de Judá, Er y Onán murieron en Canaán, 20 entonces los descendientes de Judá fueron los grupos familiares por parte de sus hijos Selá, Fares y Zera.

De Selá desciende el grupo familiar selaita;

de Fares, el faresita

y de Zera, el zeraíta.

21 Los grupos familiares descendientes de Fares fueron:

de Jezrón, el grupo familiar jezronita

y de Jamul el jamulita.

22 Esos eran los grupos familiares de Judá los cuales tenían, de acuerdo al censo, 76 500 hombres.

23 Los descendientes de Isacar por sus grupos familiares, eran estos:

de Tola desciende el grupo familiar tolaíta;

de Fuvá, el fuvita;

24 de Yasub, el yasubita

y de Simrón, el simronita.

25 Esos eran los grupos familiares de Isacar los cuales tenían, de acuerdo al censo, 64 300 hombres.

26 Los descendientes de Zabulón por sus grupos familiares, eran estos:

de Séred desciende el grupo familiar seredita;

de Elón, el elonita

y de Yalel, el yalelita.

27 Esos eran los grupos familiares de Zabulón los cuales tenían, de acuerdo al censo, 60 500 hombres.

28 Estos son los hijos de José por sus grupos familiares, Manasés y Efraín. 29 Los descendientes de Manasés eran estos:

de Maquir desciende el grupo familiar maquirita.

Maquir era el padre de Galaad;

de Galaad desciende el galaadita.

30 Estos eran los descendientes de Galaad:

de Jézer desciende el jezerita;

de Jélec, el jelequita;

31 de Asriel, el asrielita;

de Siquén, el siquenita;

32 de Semidá, el semidaíta

y de Héfer, el heferita.

33 Zelofejad era el hijo de Héfer, pero él no tuvo hijos, sino sólo hijas. Los nombres de sus hijas eran Majlá, Noa, Joglá, Milca y Tirsá.

34 Esos eran los grupos familiares de Manasés los cuales tenían, de acuerdo al censo, 52 700.

Todos esos grupos familiares eran descendientes de José.

38 Los descendientes de Benjamín por sus grupos familiares, eran estos:

de Bela desciende el grupo familiar belaíta;

de Asbel, el asbelita;

de Ajirán, el ajiranita;

39 de Sufán, el sufanita

y de Jufán, el jufanita.

40 Los hijos de Bela eran Ard y Naamán.

De Ard desciende el ardita

y de Naamán, el naamanita.

41 Esos eran los grupos familiares de Benjamín los cuales tenían, de acuerdo al censo, 45 600 hombres.

42 Los descendientes de Dan eran

los del grupo familiar de Suján.

43 El sujanita tenía, de acuerdo al censo, 64 400 hombres.

44 Los descendientes de Aser por sus grupos familiares, eran estos:

de Imná desciende el grupo familiar imnaíta;

de Isví, el isvita

y de Beriá, el beriaíta.

45 Los descendientes de Beriá eran

de Héber desciende el grupo familiar heberita

y de Malquiel el malquielita.

46 El nombre de la hija de Aser era Sera. 47 Esos eran los grupos familiares de Aser los cuales tenían, de acuerdo al censo, 53 400 hombres.

48 Los descendientes de Neftalí por sus grupos familiares, eran estos:

de Yazel desciende el grupo familiar yazelita;

de Guní, el gunita;

49 de Jéser, el jeserita

y de Silén, el silenita.

50 Esos eran los grupos familiares de Neftalí los cuales tenían, de acuerdo al censo, 45 400 hombres.

51 El número de israelitas, de acuerdo al censo, fue de 601 730 hombres en total.

52 El SEÑOR le dijo a Moisés: 53 «Hay que dividir el territorio entre estas tribus para que a cada una le corresponda su parte, de acuerdo al número de nombres registrados. 54 A una tribu grande le asignarás un territorio extenso y a una tribu pequeña le asignarás un territorio de menos extensión, cada una de acuerdo al número de censados. 55 Sin embargo, la ubicación del territorio de cada una se asignará por sorteo que se efectuará con los nombres de las tribus de sus antepasados. 56 El territorio de cada tribu será asignado por sorteo, sin importar si la tribu es grande o pequeña».

Censo de los levitas

57 Estos eran los levitas que fueron contados según sus grupos familiares:

de Guersón desciende el grupo familiar guersonita;

de Coat, el coatita

y de Merari, el merarita.

58 Estos eran los grupos familiares de Leví:

el libnita,

el hebronita,

el majlita,

el musita

y el coreíta.

Coat era el padre de Amirán. 59 El nombre de la esposa de Amirán era Jocabed, descendiente de Leví. Jocabed había nacido en la tribu de Leví en Egipto, y los hijos que tuvo con Amirán fueron Aarón, Moisés, y su hermana Miriam.

60 Nadab, Abiú, Eleazar e Itamar eran hijos de Aarón. 61 Nadab y Abiú murieron cuando ofrecieron un fuego no autorizado ante el SEÑOR. 62 El número de levitas, de acuerdo al censo, fue de 23 000 hombres de un mes de edad en adelante. Ellos no fueron censados junto con los demás israelitas porque ellos no recibirían su parte del territorio como el resto de los israelitas.

63 Ese fue el resultado del censo de los israelitas que hicieron Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar. Census of a New Generation

26 [a]Then it came about after the (A)plague, [b]that the Lord spoke to Moses and to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, saying, (B)Take a [c]census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers’ households, whoever is able to go to war in Israel.” So Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them (C)in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying, Take a census of the people from twenty years old and upward, as the Lord has commanded Moses.”

Now the sons of Israel who came out of the land of Egypt were as follows:

Reuben, Israel’s firstborn, the sons of Reuben: of Hanoch, the family of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the family of the Palluites; of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; of Carmi, the family of the Carmites. These are the families of the Reubenites, and those who were counted of them were (D)43,730. The son of Pallu: Eliab. The sons of Eliab: Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. These are the Dathan and Abiram who were (E)called by the congregation, who fought against Moses and against Aaron in the group of Korah, when they fought against the Lord, 10 and (F)the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up along with Korah, when that group died, (G)when the fire devoured 250 men, so that they became a warning sign. 11 (H)The sons of Korah, however, did not die.

12 The sons of Simeon by their families: of [d]Nemuel, the family of the Nemuelites; of Jamin, the family of the Jaminites; of [e]Jachin, the family of the Jachinites; 13 of [f]Zerah, the family of the Zerahites; of Shaul, the family of the Shaulites. 14 These are the families of the Simeonites, (I)22,200 in number.

15 The sons of Gad by their families: of [g]Zephon, the family of the Zephonites; of Haggi, the family of the Haggites; of Shuni, the family of the Shunites; 16 of [h]Ozni, the family of the Oznites; of Eri, the family of the Erites; 17 of [i]Arod, the family of the Arodites; of Areli, the family of the Arelites. 18 These are the families of the sons of Gad according to those who were numbered of them, (J)40,500.

19 The (K)sons of Judah were Er and Onan, but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. 20 The (L)sons of Judah by their families were: of Shelah, the family of the Shelanites; of Perez, the family of the Perezites; of Zerah, the family of the Zerahites. 21 The sons of Perez were: of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; of Hamul, the family of the Hamulites. 22 These are the families of Judah by those who were numbered of them, (M)76,500.

23 The (N)sons of Issachar by their families: of Tola, the family of the Tolaites; of [j]Puvah, the family of the Punites; 24 of [k]Jashub, the family of the Jashubites; of Shimron, the family of the Shimronites. 25 These are the families of Issachar by those who were numbered of them, (O)64,300.

26 The (P)sons of Zebulun by their families: of Sered, the family of the Seredites; of Elon, the family of the Elonites; of Jahleel, the family of the Jahleelites. 27 These are the families of the Zebulunites by those who were numbered of them, (Q)60,500.

28 The (R)sons of Joseph by their families: Manasseh and Ephraim. 29 The sons of Manasseh: of Machir, the family of the Machirites; and (S)Machir fathered Gilead: of Gilead, the family of the Gileadites. 30 These are the sons of Gilead: of [l]Iezer, the family of the (T)Iezerites; of Helek, the family of the Helekites; 31 and of Asriel, the family of the Asrielites; and of Shechem, the family of the Shechemites; 32 and of Shemida, the family of the Shemidaites; and of Hepher, the family of the Hepherites. 33 Now Zelophehad the son of Hepher had no sons, only daughters; and (U)the names of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 34 These are the families of Manasseh; and those who were numbered of them were (V)52,700.

35 These are the sons of Ephraim by their families: of Shuthelah, the family of the Shuthelahites; of [m]Becher, the family of the Becherites; of Tahan, the family of the Tahanites. 36 These are the sons of Shuthelah: of Eran, the family of the Eranites. 37 These are the families of the sons of Ephraim by those who were numbered of them, (W)32,500. These are the sons of Joseph by their families.

38 The sons of Benjamin by their families: of Bela, the family of the Belaites; of Ashbel, the family of the Ashbelites; of [n]Ahiram, the family of the Ahiramites; 39 of [o]Shephupham, the family of the Shuphamites; of [p]Hupham, the family of the Huphamites. 40 The sons of Bela were [q]Ard and Naaman: of Ard, the family of the Ardites; of Naaman, the family of the Naamites. 41 These are the sons of Benjamin by their families; and those who were numbered of them were (X)45,600.

42 These are the sons of Dan by their families: of [r]Shuham, the family of the Shuhamites. These are the families of Dan by their families. 43 All the families of the Shuhamites, by those who were numbered of them, were (Y)64,400.

44 The (Z)sons of Asher by their families: of Imnah, the family of the Imnites; of Ishvi, the family of the Ishvites; of Beriah, the family of the Beriites. 45 Of the sons of Beriah: of Heber, the family of the Heberites; of Malchiel, the family of the Malchielites. 46 And the name of the daughter of Asher was Serah. 47 These are the families of the sons of Asher by those who were numbered of them, (AA)53,400.

48 The (AB)sons of Naphtali by their families: of Jahzeel, the family of the Jahzeelites; of Guni, the family of the Gunites; 49 of Jezer, the family of the Jezerites; of (AC)Shillem, the family of the Shillemites. 50 These are the families of Naphtali by their families; and those who were numbered of them were (AD)45,400.

51 These are the ones who were numbered of the sons of Israel, (AE)601,730.

52 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 53 [s]Among these the land shall be divided as an inheritance according to the number of names. 54 (AF)To a larger group you shall increase their inheritance, and to a smaller group you shall decrease their inheritance; each shall be given their inheritance corresponding to the total of those who were numbered of them. 55 But the land shall be (AG)divided by lot. They shall receive their inheritance according to the names of the tribes of their fathers. 56 Corresponding to the selection by lot, their inheritance shall be divided between the larger and the smaller groups.”

57 (AH)These are those who were numbered of the Levites according to their families: of Gershon, the family of the Gershonites; of Kohath, the family of the Kohathites; of Merari, the family of the Merarites. 58 These are the families of Levi: the family of the Libnites, the family of the Hebronites, the family of the Mahlites, the family of the Mushites, and the family of the Korahites. (AI)Kohath fathered Amram. 59 And the name of Amram’s wife (AJ)was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt; and she bore to Amram Aaron and Moses, and their sister Miriam. 60 (AK)And to Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 61 (AL)But Nadab and Abihu died when they offered [t]strange fire before the Lord. 62 Those who were numbered of them were (AM)twenty-three thousand, every male from a month old and upward, for (AN)they were not numbered among the sons of Israel (AO)since no inheritance was given to them among the sons of Israel.

63 These are the ones who were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the sons of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho. 64 (AP)But among these there was not a man of those who were numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest, who numbered the sons of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai. 65 For the Lord had said [u]of them, “(AQ)They shall certainly die in the wilderness.” And not a man was left of them, (AR)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

The Second Census

26 After the plague(A) the Lord said to Moses and Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest, “Take a census(B) of the whole Israelite community by families—all those twenty years old or more who are able to serve in the army(C) of Israel.” So on the plains of Moab(D) by the Jordan across from Jericho,(E) Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them and said, “Take a census of the men twenty years old or more, as the Lord commanded Moses.”

These were the Israelites who came out of Egypt:(F)

The descendants of Reuben,(G) the firstborn son of Israel, were:

through Hanok,(H) the Hanokite clan;

through Pallu,(I) the Palluite clan;

through Hezron,(J) the Hezronite clan;

through Karmi,(K) the Karmite clan.

These were the clans of Reuben; those numbered were 43,730.

The son of Pallu was Eliab, and the sons of Eliab(L) were Nemuel, Dathan and Abiram. The same Dathan and Abiram were the community(M) officials who rebelled against Moses and Aaron and were among Korah’s followers when they rebelled against the Lord.(N) 10 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them(O) along with Korah, whose followers died when the fire devoured the 250 men.(P) And they served as a warning sign.(Q) 11 The line of Korah,(R) however, did not die out.(S)

12 The descendants of Simeon by their clans were:

37 These were the clans of Ephraim;(BA) those numbered were 32,500.

These were the descendants of Joseph by their clans.

38 The descendants of Benjamin(BB) by their clans were:

39 through Shupham,[c] the Shuphamite clan;

through Hupham, the Huphamite clan.

40 The descendants of Bela through Ard(BC) and Naaman were:

41 These were the clans of Benjamin;(BD) those numbered were 45,600.

42 These were the descendants of Dan(BE) by their clans:(BF)

through Shuham,(BG) the Shuhamite clan.

These were the clans of Dan: 43 All of them were Shuhamite clans; and those numbered were 64,400.

44 The descendants of Asher(BH) by their clans were:

through Imnah, the Imnite clan;

through Ishvi, the Ishvite clan;

through Beriah, the Beriite clan;

45 and through the descendants of Beriah:

through Heber, the Heberite clan;

through Malkiel, the Malkielite clan.

46 (Asher had a daughter named Serah.)

47 These were the clans of Asher;(BI) those numbered were 53,400.

48 The descendants of Naphtali(BJ) by their clans were:

through Jahzeel, the Jahzeelite clan;

through Guni, the Gunite clan;

49 through Jezer, the Jezerite clan;

through Shillem, the Shillemite clan.

50 These were the clans of Naphtali;(BK) those numbered were 45,400.(BL)

51 The total number of the men of Israel was 601,730.(BM)

52 The Lord said to Moses, 53 “The land is to be allotted to them as an inheritance based on the number of names.(BN) 54 To a larger group give a larger inheritance, and to a smaller group a smaller one; each is to receive its inheritance according to the number(BO) of those listed.(BP) 55 Be sure that the land is distributed by lot.(BQ) What each group inherits will be according to the names for its ancestral tribe. 56 Each inheritance is to be distributed by lot among the larger and smaller groups.”

57 These were the Levites(BR) who were counted by their clans:

through Gershon, the Gershonite clan;

through Kohath, the Kohathite clan;

through Merari, the Merarite clan.

58 These also were Levite clans:

the Libnite clan,

the Hebronite clan,

the Mahlite clan,

the Mushite clan,

the Korahite clan.

(Kohath was the forefather of Amram;(BS) 59 the name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed,(BT) a descendant of Levi, who was born to the Levites[e] in Egypt. To Amram she bore Aaron, Moses(BU) and their sister(BV) Miriam.(BW) 60 Aaron was the father of Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.(BX) 61 But Nadab and Abihu(BY) died when they made an offering before the Lord with unauthorized fire.)(BZ)

62 All the male Levites a month old or more numbered 23,000.(CA) They were not counted(CB) along with the other Israelites because they received no inheritance(CC) among them.(CD)

63 These are the ones counted(CE) by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab(CF) by the Jordan across from Jericho.(CG) 64 Not one of them was among those counted(CH) by Moses and Aaron(CI) the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Desert of Sinai. 65 For the Lord had told those Israelites they would surely die in the wilderness,(CJ) and not one of them was left except Caleb(CK) son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.(CL)
