病気を治す
8 イエスが山を降りると、大ぜいの群衆がついて来ました。
2 その時です。ツァラアト（皮膚が冒され、汚れているとされた当時の疾患）の人が一人、イエスに駆け寄り、足もとにひれ伏しました。「先生。お願いですから、私を治してください。お気持ちひとつで、治すことがおできになるのですから。」
3 イエスはその男にさわり、「そうしてあげましょう。さあ、よくなりなさい」と言われました。するとたちまち、ツァラアトはあとかたもなくきれいに治ってしまいました。
4 「さあ、まっすぐ祭司のところに行き、体を調べてもらいなさい。モーセの律法にあるとおり、ツァラアトが治った時のささげ物をしなさい。完全に治ったことを人々の前で証明するのです。」
5-6 イエスがカペナウムの町に入られると、ローマ軍の隊長がやって来て、「先生。うちの若い召使が中風で苦しんでおります。とてもひどく、起き上がることもできません。どうか治してやってください。お願いします」としきりに頼みました。
7 「わかりました。では、行って治してあげましょう」とイエスは承知されました。
8 ところが、隊長の返事はこうでした。「先生。私には、あなたを家にお迎えするだけの資格はありません。わざわざ来ていただかなくても、ただこの場で、『治れ』と言ってくださるだけでけっこうです。そうすれば、召使は必ず治ります。 9 と申しますのは、私も上官に仕える身ですが、私の下にも部下が大ぜいおります。その一人に私が『行け』と言えば行きますし、『来い』と言えば来ます。また奴隷に『あれをやれ。これをやれ』と命じると、そのとおりにします。私にさえそんな権威があるのですから、先生の権威で、病気に『出て行け』とお命じになれば、必ず治るはずです。」
10 イエスはたいへん驚き、群衆のほうをふり向いて言われました。「これほど信仰深い人は、イスラエル中でも見たことがありません。 11 いいですか、皆さん。やがて、この人のような外国人がたくさん世界中からやって来て、神の国で、アブラハム、イサク、ヤコブといっしょに席に着くでしょう。 12 ところが、神の国はもともとイスラエル人のために準備されたのに、多くのイスラエル人が入りそこねて、外の暗闇に放り出され、泣いてくやしがることになるのです。」
13 それから、ローマ軍の隊長に、「さあ、家に帰りなさい。あなたの信じたとおりのことが起こっています」と言われました。そして、ちょうどその時刻、召使の病気はいやされていたのです。
14 イエスがペテロの家に行かれると、ペテロのしゅうとめが、高熱でうなされていました。 15 ところが、イエスがその手におさわりになると、たちまち熱がひき、彼女は起き出して、みんなの食事のしたくを始めました。
16 その夕方のことです。悪霊につかれた人たちが、イエスのところに連れて来られました。イエスがただひとことお命じになると、たちまち悪霊どもは逃げ出し、病人はみな治りました。 17 こうして、イエスについてイザヤが、「彼は、私たちの痛みを身に引き受け、私たちの病を負った」（イザヤ53・4）と預言したとおりになったのです。
嵐を静める
18 イエスは、自分を取り巻く群衆の数がだんだんふくれ上がっていくのに気づき、湖を渡る舟の手配を弟子たちにお命じになりました。
19 ちょうどその時、ユダヤ教の教師の一人が、「先生。あなたがどこへ行かれようと、ついてまいります」と申し出ました。
20 しかし、イエスは言われました。「きつねにも穴があり、鳥にも巣があります。しかし、メシヤ（救い主）のわたしには、自分の家はおろか、横になる所もありません。」
21 また、ある弟子は、「先生。ごいっしょするのは、父の葬式を終えてからにしたいのですが」と言いました。
22 けれどもイエスは、「いや、今いっしょに来なさい。死んだ人のことは、あとに残った者たちに任せておけばいいのです」とお答えになりました。
23 それから、イエスと弟子たちの一行は舟に乗り込み、湖を渡り始めました。 24 すると突然、激しい嵐になりました。舟は今にも、山のような大波にのまれそうです。ところが、イエスはぐっすり眠っておられました。
25 弟子たちはあわてて、イエスを揺り起こし、「主よ。お助けください。舟が沈みそうです」と叫びました。
26 するとイエスは、「そんなにこわがるとは、それでも神を信じているのですか」と答えると、ゆっくり立ち上がり、風と波をおしかりになりました。するとどうでしょう。嵐はぴたりとやみ、大なぎになったではありませんか。 27 弟子たちは恐ろしさのあまり、その場に座り込み、「なんというお方だろう。風や湖までが従うとは」と、ささやき合いました。
28 やがて、舟は湖の向こう岸に着きました。ガダラ人の住む地方です。と、そこに二人の男がやって来ました。実はこの二人は悪霊に取りつかれ、墓場をねぐらにしている人たちでした。何をされるかわかったものではないので、だれもそのあたりには近寄りませんでした。
29 二人は、イエスに向かって大声でわめき立てました。「おれたちをどうしようというんだ。確かに、おまえは神の子だ。だが、今はまだ、おれたちを苦しめる権利はないはずだ。」
30 ところで、ずっと向こうのほうでは、豚の群れが放し飼いになっていました。 31 そこで悪霊たちは、「もし、おれたちを追い出すのなら、あの豚の群れの中に入れてくれ」と頼みました。
32 イエスが、「よし、出て行け」とお命じになると、悪霊たちは男たちから出て、豚の中に入りました。そのとたん、豚の群れはまっしぐらに走りだし、湖めがけていっせいにがけを駆け降り、おぼれ死んでしまいました。 33 びっくりした豚飼いたちが近くの町に逃げ込み、事の一部始終を知らせると、 34 町中の者が押しかけ、「これ以上迷惑をかけてもらいたくないから、この地を立ち去ってくれ」とイエスに頼みました。
医者が必要なのはだれ？
9 それで、イエスは舟に乗り込み、ご自分の町カペナウムに帰られました。
2 そうこうするうち、数人の人が、中風の男を寝床に寝かせたまま運んで来ました。必ず治していただけると信じていたからです。イエスはこの人たちの信仰を見て、病人に、「さあ、元気を出しなさい。わたしがあなたの罪を赦したのですから」と言われました。
3 「なんと罰あたりなことばだ！ まるで、自分が神だと言っているようなものではないか。」ユダヤ教の指導者のある者は、腹の中が煮えくり返る思いでした。
4 イエスは、彼らの心中を見抜いて、「なぜそんな悪いことを考えているのですか。 5-6 この人に『あなたの罪が赦されました』と言うのと、『起きて歩きなさい』と言うのと、どちらがやさしいですか。さあ、わたしに地上で罪を赦す権威があることを証明してみせましょう」と言い、向き直って、中風の男に命令なさいました。「さあ、起きて寝床をたたみ、家に帰りなさい。もう治ったのですから。」
7 すると男は飛び起き、家に帰って行きました。
8 この有様を目のあたりにした群衆は、恐ろしさのあまり震え上がり、このような権威を人にお与えになった神をあがめました。
9 イエスはそこを去り、道を進んで行かれました。途中、マタイという取税人が取税所に座っていたので、「来なさい。わたしの弟子になりなさい」と声をおかけになると、マタイはすぐ立ち上がり、あとについて行きました。
10 そのあと、イエスと弟子たちは、マタイの家で夕食をとることになり、取税人仲間や律法の規定を守らない人も大ぜい招かれました。
11 これを見たパリサイ人たちはかんかんになり、弟子たちに、「おまえたちの先生は、どうしてあのような者たちとつき合うのだ」と食ってかかりました。
12 イエスはこれを聞いて、「健康な人には医者はいりません。医者が必要なのは病人です」とお答えになり、 13 さらにこう続けました。「聖書に、『わたしが喜ぶのは、いけにえやささげ物ではなく、あなたがたがあわれみ深くなることである』（ホセア６・６）とあります。このほんとうの意味を、もう一度学んできなさい。わたしは、自分を正しいと思っている人たちのためにではなく、罪人を神に立ち返らせるために来たのです。」
14 ある日、バプテスマのヨハネの弟子たちがイエスのところに来て、尋ねました。「なぜ、先生の弟子たちは、私たちやパリサイ人のように断食しないのですか。」
15 するとイエスは、こうお話しになりました。「花婿の友達は、花婿がいっしょにいる間は、嘆き悲しんだり食事をしなかったりするでしょうか。しかし、やがて花婿のわたしが、彼らから引き離される日が来ます。その時こそ彼らは断食することになるでしょう。
16 水洗いしていない新しい布で、古い着物に継ぎ当てをする人がいるでしょうか。そんなことをしたら、当て布は縮んで着物を破り、穴はもっと大きくなるでしょう。 17 また、新しいぶどう酒を貯蔵するのに、古い皮袋を使う人がいるでしょうか。そんなことをしたら、古い皮袋は新しいぶどう酒の圧力で張り裂け、ぶどう酒はこぼれ、どちらもだいなしになってしまいます。新しいぶどう酒を貯蔵するには、新しい皮袋を使います。そうすれば両方とも長持ちするのです。」
18 このように話していると、町の会堂管理人が駆け込んで来ました。そしてイエスの前にひれ伏し、「先生。私の幼い娘がたったいま息を引き取りました。どうかおいでくださって、手を置いて、あの子を生き返らせてください」と訴えました。
19 そこでイエスと弟子たちは、彼の家へ向かいました。 20 その途中、十二年間も出血の止まらない病気で苦しんでいた一人の女が、人ごみにまぎれて、うしろからイエスの着物のふさにさわりました。 21 「このお方にさわるだけでも、きっと治る」と思ったからです。
22 イエスはふり向き、女に声をかけました。「さあ、勇気を出しなさい。あなたの信仰があなたを治したのです。」この瞬間から、女はすっかりよくなりました。
23 さて、イエスが会堂管理人の家に着くと、人々であふれ返り、弔いの音楽が聞こえてきます。 24 そこでイエスは、「さあ、この人たちを外に出しなさい。娘さんは死んではいません。ただ眠っているだけです」と言われました。それを聞くと、みんなはイエスをあざ笑いました。
25 人々がみな出て行くと、イエスは少女の寝ている部屋に入り、その手を取りました。するとどうでしょう。少女はすぐに起き上がり、もとどおり元気になったのです。 26 このうわさはたちまち、その地方一帯に広まりました。
27 イエスが少女の家をあとにされると、二人の盲人が、「ダビデ王の子よ！ あわれな私たちをお助けください」と叫びながらついて来ました。
28 そしてついに、イエスが泊まっておられる家にまで入り込んで来ました。イエスが、「わたしに目を開けることができると思いますか」とお尋ねになると、彼らは、「はい、もちろんです」と答えました。
29 そこでイエスは、二人の目にさわり、「あなたがたの信じるとおりになりなさい」と言われました。
30 すると、彼らの目が見えるようになったのです。「このことをだれにも話してはいけません」と、イエスはきびしくお命じになりましたが、 31 それでも彼らは、イエスのことを町中に言いふらしました。
32 この人たちと入れ替わりに、悪霊につかれてものが言えなくなった男が連れて来られました。 33 イエスが悪霊を追い出されると、その人はすぐに口をきき始めたので、みんなは驚きあきれ、「こんなことは、今まで見たことがない」と大声で言い合いました。
34 しかし、パリサイ人たちは、「あいつは、悪霊の王ベルゼブル（サタン）を使っているのだ。それで悪霊どもを簡単に追い出せるのだ」と言いました。
助けを求める人は多い
35 イエスはその地方の町や村をくまなく巡回し、ユダヤ人の会堂で教え、神の国についての福音を伝えられました。また、行く先々で、あらゆる病人を治されました。 36 このように、ご自分のところにやって来る群衆をごらんになって、イエスの心は深く痛みました。彼らは、かかえている問題が非常に大きいのに、どうしたらよいか、どこへ助けを求めたらよいかわからないのです。ちょうど、羊飼いのいない羊のようでした。
37 イエスは弟子たちに言われました。「収穫はたくさんあるのに、働く人があまりにも少ないのです。 38 ですから、収穫の主である神に祈りなさい。刈り入れの場にもっと多くの働き手を送ってくださるように願うのです。」
十二弟子
10 イエスは、十二人の弟子たちをそばに呼び寄せ、彼らに、汚れた霊を追い出し、あらゆる病気を治す権威をお与えになりました。
2-4 その十二人の名前は次のとおりです。シモン〔別名ペテロ〕、アンデレ〔ペテロの兄弟〕、ヤコブ〔ゼベダイの息子〕、ヨハネ〔ヤコブの兄弟〕、ピリポ、バルトロマイ、トマス、マタイ〔取税人〕、ヤコブ〔アルパヨの息子〕、タダイ、シモン〔「熱心党」という急進派グループのメンバー〕、イスカリオテのユダ〔後にイエスを裏切った男〕です。
伝道の心がまえ
5 イエスは、次のような指示を与え、弟子たちを派遣されました。「外国人やサマリヤ人のところに行ってはいけません。 6 イスラエル人のところにだけ行きなさい。この人たちは神の囲いから迷い出た羊です。 7 彼らのところに行って、『神の国は近づいた』と伝えなさい。 8 病人を治し、死人を生き返らせ、ツァラアトの人を治し、悪霊を追い出しなさい。ただで受けたのだから、ただで与えなさい。
9 お金は、たとえわずかでも持って行ってはいけません。 10 旅行袋や着替え、くつ、それに杖も持って行ってはいけません。そういうものは、あなたがたが助けてあげる人たちから世話してもらいなさい。それが当然のことです。 11 どんな町や村に入っても、神を敬う人を見つけ、次の町へ行くまで、その家に泊まりなさい。 12 泊めてもらう時は、その家の祝福を祈りなさい。 13 もし神を敬う家庭なら、その家は必ず祝福されるし、そうでなければ、祝福されないでしょう。 14 あなたがたを受け入れない町や家があったら、そこを立ち去る時、足のちりを払い落としなさい。 15 よく言っておきますが、さばきの日には、あの邪悪なソドムとゴモラの町（悪行のため、神に滅ぼされた町）のほうが、その町よりまだ罰が軽いのです。
16 いいですか。あなたがたを派遣するのは、羊を狼の群れの中へ送るようなものです。ですから、蛇のように用心深く、鳩のように純真でありなさい。 17 気をつけなさい。あなたがたは捕らえられて裁判にかけられ、会堂でむち打たれるからです。 18 わたしのために、総督や王たちの前で取り調べられるでしょう。その時、わたしのことを彼らと世の人々にあかしすることになります。
19 逮捕されたら、どう釈明しようかなどと心配することはありません。その時その時に適切なことばが与えられます。 20 釈明するのは、あなたがたではありません。あなたがたの天の父の御霊が、あなたがたの口を通して語ってくださるのです。
21 身内からさえ迫害が起こります。 22 わたしの弟子だというので、あなたがたはすべての人に憎まれます。けれども、最後まで耐え忍ぶ者は救われるのです。 23 一つの町で迫害されたら、次の町に逃げなさい。あなたがたがイスラエルの町を全部めぐり終えないうちに、わたしは戻って来るからです。
24 生徒は先生にまさることはなく、使用人は主人より上ではありません。 25 生徒は先生のようになれたら十分だし、使用人は主人のようになれたら十分です。主人のわたしがベルゼブル（サタン）と呼ばれるくらいなのだから、ましてあなたがたは、どんなひどいことを言われるでしょうか。 26 しかし、脅迫する者たちを恐れてはいけません。やがてほんとうのことが明らかになり、彼らがひそかに巡らした陰謀は、すべての人に知れ渡るからです。
27 わたしが今、暗闇で語ることを、明るいところで大声でふれ回りなさい。わたしがあなたがたの耳にささやいたことを、屋上から言い広めなさい。
28 体だけは殺せても、たましいには指一本ふれることもできないような人々を、恐れてはいけません。たましいも体も地獄に落とすことのできる神だけを恐れなさい。 29 たった一羽の雀でさえ、あなたがたの天の父の許しなしに地に落ちることはありません。 30 あなたがたの髪の毛さえ一本残らず数えられています。 31 ですから、心配しなくてもいいのです。あなたがたは神にとって、雀より、ずっと大切なものではありませんか。
32 もしあなたがたが、だれの前でも、『私はイエスの友だ』と認めるなら、わたしも、天の父の前で、あなたがたをわたしの友だとはっきり認めましょう。 33 しかし、もし人々の前で、『イエスなど知らない』と言うなら、わたしもまた天の父の前で、あなたがたを知らないと、はっきり言うでしょう。
34 わたしが来たのは、地上を平和にするためだ、などと誤解してはいけません。平和ではなく、むしろ争いを引き起こすために来たのです。 35 そうです。息子を父親に、娘を母親に、嫁をしゅうとめに逆らわせるためです。
36 家族の者さえ敵となる場合があるのです。 37 わたし以上に父や母を愛する者は、わたしを信じる者にふさわしくありません。また、わたしよりも息子や娘を愛する者は、わたしを信じる者にふさわしくありません。 38 さらに、自分の十字架を負ってわたしに従って来ない者は、わたしを信じる者にふさわしくありません。
39 自分のいのちを一生懸命守ろうとする者は、それを失いますが、わたしのためにいのちを捨てる者は、それを自分のものとします。
40 あなたがたを受け入れる人は、わたしを受け入れるのです。わたしを受け入れる人は、わたしをお遣わしになった神を受け入れているのです。 41 もし預言者を、神から遣わされた預言者だというので受け入れるなら、預言者と同じ報いを受けるでしょう。また、神を敬う正しい人たちを、彼らが神を敬うというので受け入れるなら、彼らと同じ報いを受けます。
42 また、この小さい者のひとりに、わたしに代わって冷たい水一杯でも与えるなら、よく言っておきますが、その人は必ず報いを受けるのです。」

Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy(A)
8 When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. 2 A man with leprosy[a](B) came and knelt before him(C) and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
3 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy. 4 Then Jesus said to him, “See that you don’t tell anyone.(D) But go, show yourself to the priest(E) and offer the gift Moses commanded,(F) as a testimony to them.”
The Faith of the Centurion(G)
5 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. 6 “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed,(H) suffering terribly.”
7 Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?”
8 The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.(I) 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.(J) 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west,(K) and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.(L) 12 But the subjects of the kingdom(M) will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”(N)
13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.”(O) And his servant was healed at that moment.
Jesus Heals Many(P)
14 When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.
16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.(Q) 17 This was to fulfill(R) what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:
The Cost of Following Jesus(T)
18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake.(U) 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”
20 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man(V) has no place to lay his head.”
21 Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
22 But Jesus told him, “Follow me,(W) and let the dead bury their own dead.”
Jesus Calms the Storm(X)(Y)
23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”
26 He replied, “You of little faith,(Z) why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.(AA)
27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
Jesus Restores Two Demon-Possessed Men(AB)
28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes,[c] two demon-possessed(AC) men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. 29 “What do you want with us,(AD) Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”(AE)
30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31 The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.”
32 He said to them, “Go!” So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.(AF)
Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(AG)
9 Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town.(AH) 2 Some men brought to him a paralyzed man,(AI) lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith,(AJ) he said to the man, “Take heart,(AK) son; your sins are forgiven.”(AL)
3 At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!”(AM)
4 Knowing their thoughts,(AN) Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? 5 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 6 But I want you to know that the Son of Man(AO) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” 7 Then the man got up and went home. 8 When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God,(AP) who had given such authority to man.
The Calling of Matthew(AQ)
9 As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,”(AR) he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
10 While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”(AS)
12 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’[d](AT) For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”(AU)
Jesus Questioned About Fasting(AV)
14 Then John’s(AW) disciples came and asked him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often,(AX) but your disciples do not fast?”
15 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them?(AY) The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.(AZ)
16 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. 17 Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”
Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(BA)
18 While he was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before him(BB) and said, “My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her,(BC) and she will live.” 19 Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples.
20 Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak.(BD) 21 She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.”
22 Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart,(BE) daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.”(BF) And the woman was healed at that moment.(BG)
23 When Jesus entered the synagogue leader’s house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes,(BH) 24 he said, “Go away. The girl is not dead(BI) but asleep.”(BJ) But they laughed at him. 25 After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up.(BK) 26 News of this spread through all that region.(BL)
Jesus Heals the Blind and the Mute
27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”(BM)
28 When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”
“Yes, Lord,” they replied.(BN)
29 Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you”;(BO) 30 and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.”(BP) 31 But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.(BQ)
32 While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed(BR) and could not talk(BS) was brought to Jesus. 33 And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.”(BT)
34 But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.”(BU)
The Workers Are Few
35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.(BV) 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them,(BW) because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.(BX) 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest(BY) is plentiful but the workers are few.(BZ) 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(CA)(CB)(CC)(CD)(CE)
10 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits(CF) and to heal every disease and sickness.(CG)
2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.(CH)
5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.(CI) 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.(CJ) 7 As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven(CK) has come near.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy,[e] drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.
9 “Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts(CL)— 10 no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.(CM) 11 Whatever town or village you enter, search there for some worthy person and stay at their house until you leave. 12 As you enter the home, give it your greeting.(CN) 13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.(CO) 15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah(CP) on the day of judgment(CQ) than for that town.(CR)
16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.(CS) Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.(CT) 17 Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils(CU) and be flogged in the synagogues.(CV) 18 On my account you will be brought before governors and kings(CW) as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it.(CX) At that time you will be given what to say, 20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father(CY) speaking through you.
21 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents(CZ) and have them put to death.(DA) 22 You will be hated by everyone because of me,(DB) but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(DC) 23 When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.(DD)
24 “The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master.(DE) 25 It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul,(DF) how much more the members of his household!
26 “So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.(DG) 27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One(DH) who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.[f] 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.(DI) 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.(DJ)
32 “Whoever acknowledges me before others,(DK) I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.(DL)
34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn
“‘a man against his father,
a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law(DM)—
36 a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’[g](DN)
37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.(DO) 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.(DP) 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.(DQ)
40 “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me,(DR) and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.(DS) 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”(DT)
