⁹ for you have not as yet come to ^(A)the rest and to the inheritance that the Lord your God is giving you.

4 Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem ^(A)to have failed to reach it. ² For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because ^(B)they were not united by faith with those who listened.^{[a] 3} For we who have believed enter that rest, as he has said,

although his works were finished from the foundation of the world. ⁴ For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way: ^(D)“And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.” ⁵ And again in this passage he said,

⁶ Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news ^(F)failed to enter because of disobedience, ⁷ again he appoints a certain day, “Today,” saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted,

⁸ For if Joshua had given them rest, God^[b] would not have spoken of another day later on. ⁹ So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God,

¹² I will let people walk on you, even my people Israel. ^(A)And they shall possess you, and you shall be their inheritance, and you shall no longer ^(B)bereave them of children. ¹³ Thus says the Lord God: Because they say to you, ^(C)‘You devour people, and you bereave your nation of children,’ ¹⁴ therefore you shall no longer devour people and no longer bereave your nation of children, declares the Lord God.

²⁰ He ^(A)took into exile in Babylon those who had escaped from the sword, ^(B)and they became servants to him and to his sons until the establishment of the kingdom of Persia, ²¹ to fulfill the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had ^(C)enjoyed its Sabbaths. All the days that it lay desolate ^(D)it kept Sabbath, to fulfill seventy years.
