Isang Levita na yumaon upang kunin ang kaniyang babae.

19 At nangyari nang mga araw na yaon, ^(A)nang walang hari sa Israel, na may isang Levita na nakikipamayan sa malayong dako ng lupaing maburol ng Ephraim, na kumuha ng babae mula sa ^(B)Beth-lehem-juda.

²At ang kaniyang babae ay nagpatutot at iniwan siya na napasa bahay ng kaniyang ama sa Beth-lehem-juda, at dumoon sa loob ng apat na buwan.

³At ang kaniyang asawa ay yumaon at sumunod sa kaniya, upang makiusap na maigi sa kaniya, na ibalik siya, na kasama ang kaniyang bataan, at dalawang magkatuwang na asno: at ipinasok siya ng babae sa bahay ng kaniyang ama: at nang makita siya ng ama ng babae, ay galak na sinalubong siya.

⁴At pinigil siya ng kaniyang biyanan, ng ama ng babae; at siya'y tumahang kasama niya na tatlong araw: sa gayo'y sila'y nagkainan at naginuman, at tumuloy roon.

⁵At nangyari nang ikaapat na araw, na sila'y bumangong maaga ng kinaumagahan, at siya'y bumangon upang yumaon: at sinabi ng ama ng babae sa kaniyang manugang, Palakasin mo muna ang iyong puso ng isang subong tinapay, at pagkatapos ay ipagpatuloy ninyo ang inyong lakad.

⁶Sa gayo'y naupo sila, at kumain at uminom silang dalawa: at sinabi ng ama ng babae sa lalake, Isinasamo ko sa iyo na magsaya ka, at magpahinga sa buong gabi, at matuwa ang iyong puso.

⁷At ang lalake ay bumangon upang umalis; nguni't ^(C)pinilit siya ng kaniyang biyanan; at siya'y tumigil uli roon.

⁸At siya'y bumangong maaga sa kinaumagahan nang ikalimang araw upang yumaon; at sinabi ng ama ng babae, Isinasamo ko sa iyong palakasin mo muna ang iyong puso, at maghintay ka hanggang sa kumulimlim ang araw; at sila'y kumain, silang dalawa.

⁹At nang tumindig ang lalake upang yumaon, siya, at ang kaniyang babae, at ang kaniyang bataan, ay sinabi ng kaniyang biyanan, na ama ng kaniyang babae, sa kaniya, Narito, ngayo'y ang araw ay gumagabi na, isinasamo ko sa inyong magpahinga sa buong gabi: narito, ang araw ay nananaw; tumigil dito, upang ang iyong puso ay sumaya; at bukas ay yumaon kayong maaga sa inyong paglakad, upang ^(D)makauwi ka.

¹⁰Nguni't hindi na inibig ng lalake na magpahinga roon nang gabing yaon, kundi siya'y tumindig at yumaon at tinapat ang Jebus^[a] (na siyang Jerusalem): at may dala siyang dalawang magkatuwang na asno na gayak; ang kaniyang babae ay kasama rin niya.

¹¹Nang sila'y nasa tabi na ng Jebus, ang araw ay nananaw; at sinabi ng bataan sa kaniyang panginoon, Isinasamo ko sa iyo na halina, at tayo'y lumiko sa bayang ito ng mga Jebuseo, at tumigil dito.

¹²At sinabi ng kaniyang panginoon sa kaniya, Hindi tayo liliko sa bayan ng iba, na hindi sa mga anak ni Israel; kundi dadaan tayo sa ^(E)Gabaa.

¹³At sinabi niya sa kaniyang alipin, Halina at tayo'y lumapit sa isa sa mga dakong ito; at tayo'y titigil sa Gabaa o sa ^(F)Rama.

¹⁴Sa gayo'y nagdaan sila at nagpatuloy ng kanilang paglakad; at nilubugan sila ng araw sa malapit sa Gabaa, na nauukol sa Benjamin.

¹⁵At sila'y lumiko roon, upang pumasok na tumigil sa Gabaa: at sila'y pumasok, at naupo sila sa lansangan ng bayan: sapagka't walang taong ^(G)magpatuloy sa kanila.

¹⁶At, narito, may umuwing isang matandang lalake na galing sa kaniyang paggawa sa bukid sa paglubog ng araw; ang lalake nga'y taga lupaing maburol ng Ephraim, at nakikipamayan sa Gabaa; nguni't ang mga tao sa dakong yaon ay mga ^(H)Benjamita.

¹⁷At itiningin niya ang kaniyang mga mata, at nakita niya ang naglalakbay sa lansangan ng bayan; at sinabi ng matandang lalake, Saan ka paroroon? at saan ka nanggaling?

¹⁸At sinabi niya sa kaniya, Kami ay nagdadaang mula sa Beth-lehem-juda na patungo sa malayong dako ng lupaing maburol ng Ephraim; tagaroon ako at ako'y naparon sa Beth-lehem-juda: at ako'y pasasabahay^[b] ng Panginoon; at walang taong magpatuloy sa akin.

¹⁹^(I)Gayon man ay may dayami at damo para sa aming mga asno; at may tinapay at alak naman para sa akin, at sa iyong lingkod na babae, at sa batang kasama ng iyong mga lingkod: ^(J)walang kakulangang anomang bagay,

²⁰At sinabi ng matandang lalake, ^(K)Kapayapaan nawa ang sumaiyo; sa anomang paraa'y pabayaan mo sa akin ang lahat ng iyong mga kailangan: ^(L)at huwag ka lamang tumigil sa lansangan.

²¹^(M)Sa gayo'y kaniyang ipinasok sa kaniyang bahay, at binigyan ng pagkain ang mga asno: at sila'y naghugas ng kanilang mga paa, at nagkainan at naginuman.

Ang kahalayhalay na gawa sa Gabaa.

²²Nang nangatutuwa na ang kanilang mga puso, narito, ang mga ^(N)lalake sa bayan, na ilang ^(O)hamak na tao, ay kinubkob ang bahay sa palibot, na hinahampas ang pintuan; at sila'y nagsalita sa may-ari ng bahay, sa matanda, na sinasabi, ^(P)Ilabas mo ang lalake na pumasok sa iyong bahay upang makilala namin siya.

²³At lumabas sa kanila ang ^(Q)lalake, ang may-ari ng bahay, at sinabi sa kanila, Huwag, mga kapatid ko, isinasamo ko sa inyong huwag kayong gumawa ng ganiyang kasamaan; yamang ang lalaking ito'y pumasok sa aking bahay, ay ^(R)huwag ninyong gawin ang kaululang ito.

²⁴^(S)Narito, nandito ang aking anak na dalaga, at ang kaniyang babae; akin silang ilalabas ngayon, at ^(T)pangayupapain ninyo sila, at gawin ninyo sa kanila ang magalingin ninyo sa kanila: nguni't sa lalaking ito ay huwag kayong gumawa ng anomang masama.

²⁵Nguni't hindi siya dininig ng mga lalake: sa gayo'y hinawakan ng lalake ang kaniyang babae at inilabas sa kanila: at sinipingan nila siya, at hinalay buong gabi hanggang sa kinaumagahan; at nang magbukang liwayway, ay pinayaon nila siya.

²⁶Nang magkagayo'y dumating ang babae, pagbubukang liwayway, at nabuwal sa pintuan ng bahay ng lalake, na kinaroroonan ng kaniyang panginoon, hanggang sa lumiwanag.

²⁷At bumangon ang kaniyang panginoon ng kinaumagahan, at ibinukas ang mga pinto ng bahay, at lumabas na nagpatuloy ng kaniyang lakad: at, narito, ang babae na kaniyang kinakasama ay nakabuwal sa pintuan ng bahay, na ang kaniyang mga kamay ay nasa tayuan.

²⁸At sinabi niya sa kaniya, Bumangon ka, at tayo na; nguni't walang sumagot: nang magkagayo'y kaniyang isinakay sa asno; at ang lalake ay bumangon, at napasa kaniyang dako.

²⁹At nang siya'y pumasok sa kaniyang bahay, ay kumuha siya ng isang sundang, at itinaga sa kaniyang babae, ^(U)at pinagputolputol siya ayon sa kaniyang buto, ng labing dalawang putol; at ipinadala siya sa lahat ng hangganan ng Israel.

³⁰At nangyari, na lahat ng nakakita ay nagsabi, Walang ganitong gawang ginawa o nakita man mula sa araw na umahon ang mga anak ni Israel na mula sa lupain ng Egipto hanggang sa araw na ito: ^(V)kayo'y magdilidili, pumayo, at magsalita.

Levit i njegova žena ropkinja

19 U vrijeme kad Izrael još nije imao kralja, jedan je Levit živio u udaljenome dijelu Efrajimovoga gorja. Uzeo je sebi ženu ropkinju^[a] iz Betlehema u Judi. ²No bila mu je nevjerna pa je otišla. Vratila se u kuću svog oca u Betlehemu u Judi i živjela ondje četiri mjeseca. ³Tada je njezin muž krenuo po nju s namjerom da je nagovori na povratak. Poveo je sa sobom slugu i dva magarca.

Kad je došao do kuće^[b] njezinog oca, djevojčin ga je otac vidio i radosno mu izišao ususret. ⁴Nagovorio ga je da ostane kod njega pa je ovaj ostao tri dana. Jeli su, pili i noćili. ⁵Četvrtoga su dana ustali rano ujutro. Levit se spremao za polazak.

No djevojčin je otac rekao svome zetu: »Prvo nešto pojedi. Poslije možeš ići.«

⁶Njih su dvojica sjela zajedno te su jeli i pili. Tada je djevojčin otac rekao: »Molim te, ostani još noćas i uživaj.«

⁷Levit je već bio spreman za polazak, ali njegov ga je domaćin nagovorio da ostane još jednu noć.

⁸Petog je dana ustao rano ujutro, spreman krenuti na put. No djevojčin je otac opet zamolio: »Pojedi nešto i ostani do poslijepodne.«

Tako su njih dvojica ponovo sjela zajedno i jela.

⁹Levit je sad bio spreman krenuti, zajedno sa svojom ženom ropkinjom i slugom. No djevojčin je otac rekao: »Molim te, ostani još ovu noć. Dan je na izmaku. Prespavaj ovdje i uživaj. Sutra rano ujutro ustani i kreni na put kući.«

¹⁰No Levit nije htio ostati još jednu noć. Spremio se i krenuo. Sa sobom je vodio dva osedlana magarca i ženu ropkinju. Stigli su do grada Jebusa (to jest, Jeruzalema). ¹¹Kad su bili blizu Jebusa, dan se već primicao kraju. Sluga je rekao svom gospodaru: »Molim te, skrenimo u grad Jebusejaca i prenoćimo ovdje.«

¹²»Ne«, odgovorio je njegov gospodar Levit, »nećemo ulaziti u strani grad koji ne pripada Izraelcima. Produžit ćemo do grada Gibee^[c].« ¹³Rekao je slugi: »Hajdemo na neko drugo mjesto. Prenoćit ćemo u Gibei ili Rami.«

¹⁴Produžili su dalje, a sunce je već bilo zašlo kad su stigli do Gibee u zemlji Benjaminovog plemena. ¹⁵Skrenuli su u grad da nađu prenoćište. Došli su na gradski trg i sjeli, ali nitko ih nije htio pustiti u kuću preko noći.

¹⁶Tada je naišao neki starac, koji se uvečer vraćao s rada na polju. Bio je iz Efrajimovoga gorja, ali živio je ovdje u Gibei koja je pripadala Benjaminovcima.

¹⁷Starac je ugledao putnika na gradskom trgu pa ga je upitao: »Kamo ideš? Odakle dolaziš?«

¹⁸»Putujemo iz Betlehema u Judi«, odgovorio je Levit. »Idemo u udaljeni dio Efrajimovoga gorja, gdje je moj dom. Bio sam u Betlehemu u Judi, a sad se vraćam kući^[d]. No nitko me ne želi primiti u svoju kuću. ¹⁹Imam sa sobom slame i sijena za magarce te kruha i vina za sebe, za djevojku i za slugu. Ništa nam ne treba.«

²⁰A starac mu je tada rekao: »Mir s tobom. Dođi u moju kuću. Dat ću vam sve što je potrebno, samo nemojte ostati preko noći na trgu.«

²¹Starac ih je odveo u svoju kuću, nahranio je magarce, oprali su noge pa su jeli i pili.

²²Dok su uživali u gostoprimstvu svog domaćina, gradski su zločinci opkolili kuću i zalupali na vrata. Dovikivali su starcu, gospodaru kuće: »Dovedi nam čovjeka koji je odsjeo u tvojoj kući. Želimo seks s njim!«

²³Starac, glava kuće, izašao je pred njih i rekao: »Ne, braćo moja, nemojte činiti zlo! Taj je čovjek gost u mojoj kući.^[e] Nemojte činiti takvu gadost! ²⁴Tu su moja kći djevica i čovjekova žena ropkinja. Evo, sad ću ih dovesti pa činite s njima što želite. No nemojte učiniti takvu gadost s ovim čovjekom.«

²⁵No ti ljudi nisu htjeli slušati starca pa je Levit zgrabio svoju ženu ropkinju i izgurao je k njima van na ulicu. Silovali su je i zlostavljali cijelu noć, sve do jutra. Kad je počelo svitati, pustili su je.

²⁶Ujutro je žena došla i pala pred vrata kuće, gdje je odsjeo njezin gospodar. Ležala je ondje dok se nije razdanilo. ²⁷Levit je ujutro ustao i otvorio vrata kuće, spreman nastaviti put. No ondje, na ulazu u kuću, ležala je njegova žena ropkinja s rukama na kućnom pragu.

²⁸Rekao je: »Ustani, idemo dalje«.

No odgovora nije bilo. Levit je stavio njezino tijelo na magarca i otišao svojoj kući. ²⁹Kad je došao kući, uzeo je nož i isjekao joj tijelo na dvanaest komada. Zatim ih je razaslao u sve dijelove Izraela.

³⁰Svatko tko je to vidio, rekao je: »Takvo nešto nije se dogodilo od dana kad su Izraelci izašli iz Egipta pa sve do danas. Treba o tome razmisliti, vijećati i izreći presudu.«

19 At that time the people of Israel did not have a king.

There was a Levite who lived in the faraway part of the mountains of Ephraim. He had taken a slave woman. She was from the city of Bethlehem in the land of Judah. ²But she was unfaithful to him. She left him and went back to her father’s house. It was in Bethlehem in Judah. She stayed there for four months. ³Then her husband went to ask her to come back to him. He took with him his servant and two donkeys. The Levite came to her father’s house. And she invited the Levite to come in. Her father was happy to see him. ⁴The father-in-law, the young woman’s father, asked him to stay. So he stayed for three days. He ate, drank and slept there.

⁵On the fourth day they got up early in the morning. The Levite was getting ready to leave. But the woman’s father said to his son-in-law, “Refresh yourself by eating something. Then you may go.” ⁶So the two men sat down to eat and drink together. After that, the father said to him, “Please stay tonight. Relax and enjoy yourself.” ⁷When the man got up to go, his father-in-law asked him to stay. So he stayed again that night. ⁸On the fifth day the man got up early in the morning to leave. The woman’s father said, “Refresh yourself. Wait until this afternoon.” So the two men ate together.

⁹Then the Levite, his slave woman and his servant got up to leave. His father-in-law, the young woman’s father, said, “It’s almost night. The day is almost gone. So spend the night here and enjoy yourself. Tomorrow morning you may get up early and go on your way home.” ¹⁰But the Levite did not want to stay another night. He took his two saddled donkeys and his slave woman. He traveled toward the city of Jebus. (Jebus is another name for Jerusalem.)

¹¹The day was almost over. They were near Jebus. So the servant said to his master, “Let’s stop at this city. It’s the city of the Jebusite people. Let’s spend the night here.”

¹²But his master said, “No. We won’t go inside a strange city. Those people are not Israelites. We will go on to the city of Gibeah.” ¹³Then he said, “Come on. Let’s try to make it to Gibeah or Ramah. We can spend the night in one of those cities.” ¹⁴So they went on. And the sun went down as they came near Gibeah. Gibeah belongs to the tribe of Benjamin. ¹⁵So they stopped there to spend the night. They came to the public square in the middle of the city and sat down. But no one invited them home to spend the night.

¹⁶That evening an old man came into the city from his work in the fields. His home was in the mountains of Ephraim. But now he was living in Gibeah. (The men of Gibeah were from the tribe of Benjamin.) ¹⁷He saw the traveler, the Levite, in the public square. He asked, “Where are you going? Where did you come from?”

¹⁸The Levite answered, “We are traveling from Bethlehem in Judah. We’re going to my home. I’m from a faraway part of the mountains of Ephraim. I have been to Bethlehem in Judah. Now I am going to the Holy Tent of the Lord. No one has invited me to stay in his house. ¹⁹We already have straw and food for our donkeys. There is bread and wine for me, the young woman and my servant. We don’t need anything.”

²⁰The old man said, “You are welcome to stay at my house. Let me give you anything you need. But don’t spend the night in the public square.” ²¹So the old man took the Levite into his house. He fed their donkeys, and they washed their feet. Then he gave them something to eat and drink.

²²While they were enjoying themselves, some wicked men of the city surrounded the house. They beat on the door. They shouted to the old man who owned the house. They said, “Bring out the man who came to your house. We want to force him to have physical relations with us.”

²³The owner of the house went outside. And he said to them, “No, my friends. Don’t be so evil. This man is a guest in my house. Don’t do this terrible thing! ²⁴Look, here is my daughter. She is a virgin. And here is the man’s slave woman. I will bring them out to you now. Do anything you want with them. But don’t do such a terrible thing to this man.”

²⁵But the men would not listen to him. So the Levite took his slave woman and sent her outside to them. They raped her. They treated her very badly all night long. Then, at dawn, they let her go. ²⁶She came back to the house where her master was staying. She fell down at the door and lay there until daylight.

²⁷In the morning the Levite got up. He opened the door of the house. He went outside to go on his way. But there lay his slave woman. She had fallen down at the doorway of the house. Her hands were on the doorsill. ²⁸Then the Levite said to her, “Get up; let’s go.” But she did not answer. So he put her on his donkey and went home.

²⁹When the Levite got home, he took a knife and cut his slave woman into 12 parts. Then he sent a part to each of the areas where the people of Israel lived. ³⁰Everyone who saw this said, “Nothing like this has ever happened before. It has never happened since the people of Israel came out of Egypt. Think about it. Tell us what to do.”

A Levite and His Concubine

19 In those days Israel had no king.

Now a Levite who lived in a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim^(A) took a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah.^(B) ²But she was unfaithful to him. She left him and went back to her parents’ home in Bethlehem, Judah. After she had been there four months, ³her husband went to her to persuade her to return. He had with him his servant and two donkeys. She took him into her parents’ home, and when her father saw him, he gladly welcomed him. ⁴His father-in-law, the woman’s father, prevailed on him to stay; so he remained with him three days, eating and drinking,^(C) and sleeping there.

⁵On the fourth day they got up early and he prepared to leave, but the woman’s father said to his son-in-law, “Refresh yourself^(D) with something to eat; then you can go.” ⁶So the two of them sat down to eat and drink together. Afterward the woman’s father said, “Please stay tonight and enjoy yourself.^(E)” ⁷And when the man got up to go, his father-in-law persuaded him, so he stayed there that night. ⁸On the morning of the fifth day, when he rose to go, the woman’s father said, “Refresh yourself. Wait till afternoon!” So the two of them ate together.

⁹Then when the man, with his concubine and his servant, got up to leave, his father-in-law, the woman’s father, said, “Now look, it’s almost evening. Spend the night here; the day is nearly over. Stay and enjoy yourself. Early tomorrow morning you can get up and be on your way home.” ¹⁰But, unwilling to stay another night, the man left and went toward Jebus^(F) (that is, Jerusalem), with his two saddled donkeys and his concubine.

¹¹When they were near Jebus and the day was almost gone, the servant said to his master, “Come, let’s stop at this city of the Jebusites^(G) and spend the night.”

¹²His master replied, “No. We won’t go into any city whose people are not Israelites. We will go on to Gibeah.” ¹³He added, “Come, let’s try to reach Gibeah or Ramah^(H) and spend the night in one of those places.” ¹⁴So they went on, and the sun set as they neared Gibeah in Benjamin.^(I) ¹⁵There they stopped to spend the night.^(J) They went and sat in the city square,^(K) but no one took them in for the night.

¹⁶That evening^(L) an old man from the hill country of Ephraim,^(M) who was living in Gibeah (the inhabitants of the place were Benjamites), came in from his work in the fields. ¹⁷When he looked and saw the traveler in the city square, the old man asked, “Where are you going? Where did you come from?”^(N)

¹⁸He answered, “We are on our way from Bethlehem in Judah to a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim where I live. I have been to Bethlehem in Judah and now I am going to the house of the Lord.^[a]^(O) No one has taken me in for the night. ¹⁹We have both straw and fodder^(P) for our donkeys^(Q) and bread and wine^(R) for ourselves your servants—me, the woman and the young man with us. We don’t need anything.”

²⁰“You are welcome at my house,” the old man said. “Let me supply whatever you need. Only don’t spend the night in the square.” ²¹So he took him into his house and fed his donkeys. After they had washed their feet, they had something to eat and drink.^(S)

²²While they were enjoying themselves,^(T) some of the wicked men^(U) of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him.^(V)”

²³The owner of the house went outside^(W) and said to them, “No, my friends, don’t be so vile. Since this man is my guest, don’t do this outrageous thing.^(X) ²⁴Look, here is my virgin daughter,^(Y) and his concubine. I will bring them out to you now, and you can use them and do to them whatever you wish. But as for this man, don’t do such an outrageous thing.”

²⁵But the men would not listen to him. So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her^(Z) and abused her^(AA) throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go. ²⁶At daybreak the woman went back to the house where her master was staying, fell down at the door and lay there until daylight.

²⁷When her master got up in the morning and opened the door of the house and stepped out to continue on his way, there lay his concubine, fallen in the doorway of the house, with her hands on the threshold. ²⁸He said to her, “Get up; let’s go.” But there was no answer. Then the man put her on his donkey and set out for home.

²⁹When he reached home, he took a knife^(AB) and cut up his concubine, limb by limb, into twelve parts and sent them into all the areas of Israel.^(AC) ³⁰Everyone who saw it was saying to one another, “Such a thing has never been seen or done, not since the day the Israelites came up out of Egypt.^(AD) Just imagine! We must do something! So speak up!^(AE)”
