Sina Pedro at Juan sa Harap ng Kataas-taasang Kapulungan ng mga Judio
4 Nagsasalita pa sina Pedro at Juan sa mga taong bayan nang dumating ang mga paring Judio,[a] ang kapitan ng mga bantay sa Templo at ang mga Saduseo. 2 Galit na galit sila sa dalawang apostol dahil itinuturo ng mga ito sa mga tao na si Jesus ay muling nabuhay, at iyon ang katibayan na muling mabubuhay ang mga patay. 3 Kaya't dinakip nila ang dalawa, at ikinulong muna hanggang kinabukasan sapagkat gabi na noon. 4 Gayunman, marami sa nakarinig ng kanilang pangangaral ang sumampalataya kay Jesus, kaya't umabot sa limanlibo ang bilang ng mga lalaki.
5 Kinabukasan, nagtipon sa Jerusalem ang mga pinuno ng mga Judio, ang mga matatandang namumuno sa bayan at ang mga tagapagturo ng Kautusan. 6 Kasama nila si Anas, ang pinakapunong pari, si Caifas, si Juan, si Alejandro, at ang iba pang mga kamag-anak ng pinakapunong pari. 7 Pinatayo nila sa harap ang mga apostol at tinanong, “Sa anong kapangyarihan o sa kaninong pangalan ninyo ginagawa ang bagay na ito?”
8 Sumagot si Pedro na puspos ng Espiritu Santo, “Mga tagapanguna at mga pinuno ng bayan, 9 kung sinisiyasat ninyo kami ngayon tungkol sa kabutihang ginawa namin sa lumpong ito at kung paano siya gumaling, 10 nais kong malaman ninyong lahat at ng buong Israel na ang taong ito ay nakatayo sa inyong harapan at lubusang gumaling dahil sa kapangyarihan ng pangalan ni Jesu-Cristo na taga-Nazaret, na inyong ipinako sa krus ngunit muling binuhay ng Diyos. 11 Ang(A) Jesus na ito
‘Ang batong itinakwil ninyong mga tagapagtayo ng bahay,
ang siyang naging batong-panulukan.’
12 Sa kanya lamang matatagpuan ang kaligtasan, sapagkat walang ibang pangalan sa buong daigdig na ibinigay ng Diyos sa mga tao upang tayo ay maligtas.”
13 Nagtaka ang buong Kataas-taasang Kapulungan ng mga Judio sa katapangang ipinakita nina Pedro at Juan, lalo na nang malaman nilang mga karaniwang tao lamang ang mga ito at hindi nakapag-aral. Nabatid nilang dating kasamahan ni Jesus ang mga ito. 14 Ngunit dahil kaharap nila ang taong pinagaling, na nakatayo sa tabi nina Pedro at Juan, wala silang masabi laban sa dalawa. 15 Kaya't ang dalawa ay pinalabas muna ng Kapulungan, at saka sila nag-usap. 16 “Ano ang gagawin natin sa mga taong ito?” tanong nila. “Hayag na sa buong Jerusalem na isang pambihirang himala ang naganap sa pamamagitan nila at hindi natin ito maikakaila. 17 Upang huwag nang kumalat ang balita tungkol dito, pagsabihan na lamang natin sila na huwag nang magsalita kaninuman sa pangalan ni Jesus.” 18 Kaya't muli nilang ipinatawag sina Pedro at pinagsabihang huwag nang magsalita o magturo pang muli sa pangalan ni Jesus.
19 Subalit sumagot sina Pedro at Juan, “Kayo na ang humatol kung alin ang tama sa paningin ng Diyos, ang sumunod sa inyo o ang sumunod sa Diyos. 20 Hindi maaaring di namin ipahayag ang aming nakita at narinig.”
21 Wala silang makitang paraan upang parusahan ang dalawa, sapagkat ang mga tao'y nagpupuri sa Diyos dahil sa nangyari. Kaya't binalaan nila ang dalawa nang lalo pang mahigpit, at saka pinalaya. 22 Ang lalaking pinagaling ay mahigit nang apatnapung taong gulang.
Panalangin Upang Magkaroon ng Katapangan
23 Nang palayain na sina Pedro at Juan, pumunta sila sa mga kasamahan nila at ibinalita ang sinabi ng mga punong pari at ng mga pinuno ng bayan. 24 Nang(B) marinig ito ng mga mananampalataya, sama-sama silang nanalangin sa Diyos, “Panginoon, kayo po ang lumikha ng langit at ng lupa, ng dagat at ng lahat ng nasa mga ito! 25 Kayo(C) po ang nagsalita sa pamamagitan ng aming ninunong si David na inyong lingkod nang sabihin niya sa patnubay ng Espiritu Santo,
‘Bakit galit na galit ang mga Hentil,
at ang mga tao'y nagbalak ng mga bagay na walang kabuluhan?
26 Naghanda para sa digmaan ang mga hari sa lupa,
at nagtipon ang mga pinuno
laban sa Panginoon at sa kanyang Hinirang[b].’
27 Nagkatipon(D) nga sa lungsod na ito sina Herodes at Poncio Pilato, kasama ang mga Hentil at ang buong Israel, laban sa inyong banal na Lingkod na si Jesus, ang inyong Hinirang. 28 Nagkatipon sila upang isagawa ang lahat ng bagay na inyong itinakda noong una pa man ayon sa inyong kapangyarihan at kalooban. 29 At ngayon, Panginoon, tingnan ninyo, pinagbabantaan nila kami. Bigyan ninyo ng katapangan ang inyong mga alipin upang ipangaral ang inyong salita. 30 Iunat ninyo ang inyong kamay upang magpagaling, at loobin ninyo na sa pangalan ng inyong banal na Lingkod[c] na si Jesus ay makagawa kami ng mga himala.”
31 Pagkatapos nilang manalangin, nayanig ang kanilang pinagtitipunan. Silang lahat ay napuspos ng Espiritu Santo at buong tapang na nangaral ng salita ng Diyos.
Ang Pagtutulungan ng mga Mananampalataya
32 Nagkaisa(E) ang damdamin at isipan ng lahat ng mananampalataya, at di itinuring ninuman na sarili niya ang kanyang mga ari-arian, kundi para sa lahat. 33 Taglay ang dakilang kapangyarihan, ang mga apostol ay patuloy na nagpapatotoo tungkol sa muling pagkabuhay ng Panginoong Jesus.[d] At ang masaganang pagpapala ay tinaglay nilang lahat. 34 Walang kinakapos sa kanila sapagkat ipinagbibili nila ang kani-kanilang lupa o bahay, at ang pinagbilhan 35 ay ipinagkakatiwala nila sa mga apostol. Ipinamamahagi naman iyon ayon sa pangangailangan ng bawat isa.
36 Ganoon ang ginawa ni Jose, isang Levitang taga-Cyprus, na tinawag ng mga apostol na Bernabe, na ang ibig sabihi'y “Anak ng Pagpapalakas-loob.” 37 Ipinagbili niya ang kanyang bukid at ipinagkatiwala sa mga apostol ang pinagbilhan.

Peter and John before the Council
4 While Peter and John[a] were speaking to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came to them, 2 much annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming that in Jesus there is the resurrection of the dead. 3 So they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 4 But many of those who heard the word believed; and they numbered about five thousand.
5 The next day their rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem, 6 with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John,[b] and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. 7 When they had made the prisoners[c] stand in their midst, they inquired, ‘By what power or by what name did you do this?’ 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, ‘Rulers of the people and elders, 9 if we are questioned today because of a good deed done to someone who was sick and are asked how this man has been healed, 10 let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that this man is standing before you in good health by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,[d] whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead. 11 This Jesus[e] is
“the stone that was rejected by you, the builders;
it has become the cornerstone.”[f]
12 There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved.’
13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were uneducated and ordinary men, they were amazed and recognized them as companions of Jesus. 14 When they saw the man who had been cured standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition. 15 So they ordered them to leave the council while they discussed the matter with one another. 16 They said, ‘What will we do with them? For it is obvious to all who live in Jerusalem that a notable sign has been done through them; we cannot deny it. 17 But to keep it from spreading further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.’ 18 So they called them and ordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answered them, ‘Whether it is right in God’s sight to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge; 20 for we cannot keep from speaking about what we have seen and heard.’ 21 After threatening them again, they let them go, finding no way to punish them because of the people, for all of them praised God for what had happened. 22 For the man on whom this sign of healing had been performed was more than forty years old.
The Believers Pray for Boldness
23 After they were released, they went to their friends[g] and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 When they heard it, they raised their voices together to God and said, ‘Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth, the sea, and everything in them, 25 it is you who said by the Holy Spirit through our ancestor David, your servant:[h]
“Why did the Gentiles rage,
and the peoples imagine vain things?
26 The kings of the earth took their stand,
and the rulers have gathered together
against the Lord and against his Messiah.”[i]
27 For in this city, in fact, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, gathered together against your holy servant[j] Jesus, whom you anointed, 28 to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place. 29 And now, Lord, look at their threats, and grant to your servants[k] to speak your word with all boldness, 30 while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant[l] Jesus.’ 31 When they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God with boldness.
The Believers Share Their Possessions
32 Now the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything they owned was held in common. 33 With great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. 34 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold. 35 They laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. 36 There was a Levite, a native of Cyprus, Joseph, to whom the apostles gave the name Barnabas (which means ‘son of encouragement’). 37 He sold a field that belonged to him, then brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

Peter and John Before the Sanhedrin
4 The priests and the captain of the temple guard(A) and the Sadducees(B) came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. 2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.(C) 3 They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail(D) until the next day. 4 But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew(E) to about five thousand.
5 The next day the rulers,(F) the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. 6 Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas,(G) John, Alexander and others of the high priest’s family. 7 They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit,(H) said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people!(I) 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame(J) and are being asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,(K) whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead,(L) that this man stands before you healed. 11 Jesus is
12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”(N)
13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John(O) and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men,(P) they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.(Q) 14 But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. 15 So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin(R) and then conferred together. 16 “What are we going to do with these men?”(S) they asked. “Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign,(T) and we cannot deny it. 17 But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.”
18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.(U) 19 But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him?(V) You be the judges! 20 As for us, we cannot help speaking(W) about what we have seen and heard.”(X)
21 After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people(Y) were praising God(Z) for what had happened. 22 For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.
The Believers Pray
23 On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God.(AA) “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them.(AB) 25 You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David:(AC)
“‘Why do the nations rage
and the peoples plot in vain?
26 The kings of the earth rise up
and the rulers band together
against the Lord
and against his anointed one.[b]’[c](AD)
27 Indeed Herod(AE) and Pontius Pilate(AF) met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus,(AG) whom you anointed. 28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen.(AH) 29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.(AI) 30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders(AJ) through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”(AK)
31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken.(AL) And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit(AM) and spoke the word of God(AN) boldly.(AO)
The Believers Share Their Possessions
32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.(AP) 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify(AQ) to the resurrection(AR) of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace(AS) was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them,(AT) brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet,(AU) and it was distributed to anyone who had need.(AV)
36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas(AW) (which means “son of encouragement”), 37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.(AX)

First Phase of the Trial: A Warning.[a] 1 While they were still speaking to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple guard,[b] and the Sadducees came over to them, 2 greatly annoyed that they were teaching and proclaiming to the people the resurrection of the dead through Jesus. 3 Therefore, they arrested them and placed them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 4 However, many of those who had listened to their message became believers, their total approaching five thousand.
5 On the next day, their rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem, 6 with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John,[c] Alexander, and all who belonged to the high priestly family. 7 They then brought the apostles before them and asked, “By what power or by what name have you done this?”
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders, 9 if you are interrogating us today in regard to a good deed done to someone who was crippled and how he was healed, 10 let it be known to you and to all the people of Israel that it was in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth whom you crucified, and whom God raised from the dead, that this man standing before you was cured. 11 This is
‘the stone rejected by you, the builders,
that has become the cornerstone.’
12 There is no salvation in anyone else, nor is there any other name under heaven given to men by which we can be saved.”
13 They were amazed to see the fearlessness shown by Peter and John and to discover that they were uneducated ordinary men. They recognized them as companions of Jesus, 14 but, when they saw the man who had been cured standing beside them, they could not say anything in reply. 15 They ordered them to stand outside while the Sanhedrin discussed the matter.
16 Then they said, “What are we going to do with these men? Everyone living in Jerusalem is aware that a notable sign has been worked through them, and we clearly cannot deny it. 17 But to stop the news from spreading any further among the people, let us issue them a warning never again to speak to anyone in his name.”
18 Therefore, they summoned them back and ordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 However, Peter and John answered them, “You be the judges about whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God. 20 We cannot possibly refrain from speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
21 After threatening them once again, they released them, for they could find no way to punish them inasmuch as the people were praising God for what had happened. 22 For the man who had been miraculously healed was over forty years old.
23 The Community’s Prayer for the Apostles.[d] As soon as they were released, they went back[e] to the community and reported everything that the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 When they heard it, they raised their voices to God with one accord and said, “Lord, maker of heaven and earth and the sea and of everything that is in them, 25 you said by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of our ancestor David, your servant,
‘Why do the Gentiles rage
and the peoples devise futile plots?
26 The kings of the earth take their stand,
and the rulers gather together
against the Lord and against his Anointed.’
27 “Indeed, in this very city both Herod and Pontius Pilate along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel plotted against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, 28 to do whatever your hand and your decree had predestined to take place. 29 And now, O Lord, be aware of their threats, and grant that your servants may proclaim your word with all boldness, 30 as you stretch out your hand to heal and as signs and wonders are accomplished through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”
31 When they had finished their prayer, the place where they were gathered together shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and proclaimed the word of God fearlessly.
32 Life of the First Community—II.[f] The entire community of believers was united in heart and soul. No one claimed any of his possessions as his own, for everything was held in common. 33 With great power, the apostles bore witness to the resurrection[g] of the Lord Jesus, and they were all greatly respected. 34 There was never anyone among them in need, because those who were the owners of lands or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale, 35 and lay them at the feet of the apostles, to be distributed to any who were in need.
36 Barnabas.[h] One such instance involved Joseph, a Levite and a native of Cyprus, to whom the apostles gave the name Barnabas, meaning “son of encouragement.” 37 He sold a field that belonged to him and then brought the money to the apostles and laid it at their feet.

- Acts 4:1 The religious authorities understand very well the main points of Peter’s discourse: Jesus has been raised; therefore, he has entered the sphere of God. Christians are not healers possessed of some secret or magical art; they act and teach with an authority that does not belong to a group of people. They do it in the name of Jesus Christ. When the Jewish authorities ask Peter and John why they are still preaching in the name of Jesus even though they have been told not to do so anymore, Peter and John answer, “You be the judges about whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God. We cannot possibly refrain from speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
Concerning the name of Jesus, Peter says, “There is no salvation in anyone else, nor is there any other name under heaven given to men by which we can be saved.” This is a call to salvation. To act in the name of Jesus, or to invoke him, means that every action of God is done through Jesus. God’s role in the last times announced by Joel (3:5) is fulfilled through Jesus alone. If the Jewish authorities accept the fact that the movement of the History of Salvation lies in this new initiative of Jesus, they would signal the failure of their mandate and their institutions. As it is, they seek to escape embarrassment by cutting short the interrogation. But they cannot withstand the assurance of the apostles. - Acts 4:1 Captain of the temple guard: a priest who oversaw the activities of the police within the temple. Sadducees: a religious sect of the Jews that insisted upon human free will but denied immortality, the resurrection, and the existence of angels.
- Acts 4:6 John and Alexander: not otherwise known.
- Acts 4:23 The prayer begins with an invocation of the Creator, embracing the horizon of the world: heaven, earth, and sea. It follows the traditional practice of calling for God’s protection of his people. This community is the new people compelled to make a new Exodus; and this people needs strength from God for this departure and this journey. It is rejected by the Jews who act like the pagan nations as these are characterized by the Old Testament. The future of the people is going to be bleak if its authorities refuse to recognize the name of God’s holy Servant.
The invocation of the prayer for the apostles is made in the name of Jesus, and all the new people receive the gift of the word as at the first Pentecost, but in a situation of defense and interrogation. Such a prayer is the type of Christian prayer for times of crisis, for a community that must face an uncertain future and an unexpected road. - Acts 4:23 Went back: probably to the same Upper Room where the apostles had met (Acts 1:13) and where the community may have continued to meet (Acts 12:12).
- Acts 4:32 These verses present a view of the early Church. Luke stresses the internal bonds of the community at the moment of persecution. The picture he paints shows the voluntary sharing of material possessions, an activity connected with Jesus’ teaching on detachment and fraternal love (see Lk 8:3; 12:33; 16:9-13). The text does not say that all sold their property—only that they were prepared to do so if a member of the community was in need. The comportment of Barnabas and then that of Ananias and Sapphira demonstrate the right use of property in the Church.
- Acts 4:33 Bore witness to the resurrection: although the death of Christ was a significant event, his Resurrection was the most compelling event of his life, and the apostles could not but proclaim it.
- Acts 4:36 Barnabas is given as an example of the new understanding of property. He will soon play a chief role in the life of the Church (Acts 9:27; 11:22-30; 12:25; 13:1-15, 46; see 1 Cor 9:6; Gal 2; Col 4:10).
