Ang Lugar na Tinawag na Tabera
11 Dahil sa hirap na dinaranas, nagreklamo ang mga Israelita. Dahil dito, nagalit si Yahweh at pinaulanan ng apoy ang isang bahagi ng kanilang kampo. 2 Kaya, nagmakaawa kay Moises ang mga Israelita at agad naman siyang dumulog kay Yahweh. Dininig naman siya at namatay ang apoy. 3 At ang lugar na iyo'y tinawag nilang Tabera[a] sapagkat nagliyab doon ang apoy mula kay Yahweh.
Pumili si Moises ng Pitumpung Pinuno
4 Ang mga dayuhang sumama sa paglalakbay ng mga Israelita ay nanabik sa dati nilang pagkain at nagaya sa kanila ang mga Israelita. Kaya, nagreklamo na naman sila. Ang sabi nila, “Kailan pa ba tayo makakatikim ng karne? 5 Mabuti pa sa Egipto! Doon, nahihingi lang ang isda. At naaalaala ba ninyo ang pipino, pakwan, sibuyas, bawang at gulay na kinakain natin noon? 6 Nanghihina na tayo ngayon. Walang makain dito kundi ang mannang ito!”
7 Ang(A) manna ay parang buto ng kulantro at kakulay ng bedelio. 8 Ito ang laging pinupulot ng mga tao. Ginigiling nila ito o binabayo. Kapag niluto, ito'y lasang tinapay na sinangkapan ng langis. 9 Ito'y(B) kasama ng hamog na bumabagsak kung gabi.
10 Narinig ni Moises ang reklamo ng lahat ng sambahayan na nakatayo sa pintuan ng kani-kanilang tolda. Nagalit nang labis si Yahweh, kaya't nanlumo si Moises. 11 Itinanong ni Moises kay Yahweh, “Bakit ninyo ako ginaganito? Anong ikinagagalit ninyo sa akin? Bakit ninyo ako binigyan ng ganito kabigat na pasanin? 12 Ako ba ang nagsilang sa kanila? Aalagaan ko ba sila tulad ng pag-aalaga ng ina sa kanyang anak, hanggang makarating kami sa lupaing ipinangako ninyo sa aming mga ninuno? 13 Ayaw nila akong tigilan sa kahihingi ng karne. Saan ako kukuha ng karne para sa ganito karaming tao? 14 Hindi ko sila kayang alagaang mag-isa. Napakabigat ng pasaning ito para sa akin! 15 Kung ganito rin lamang ang gagawin ninyo sa akin, mabuti pa'y mamatay na ako ngayon din kaysa maghirap nang matagal.”
16 Dahil dito, sinabi ni Yahweh kay Moises, “Pumili ka ng pitumpung matatandang pinuno sa Israel, iyong mga kinikilala ng kanilang lipi, at isama mo sa Toldang Tipanan. 17 Pagdating ninyo roon, bababâ ako at makikipag-usap sa iyo. Babahaginan ko sila ng espiritung ibinigay ko sa iyo upang makatulong mo sila. 18 Sabihin mo naman sa buong bayan na ihanda nila ang kanilang mga sarili sapagkat bukas ay makakakain na sila ng karne. Nagrereklamo na naman sila. Itinatanong nila kung kailan pa sila makakatikim ng karne. Sinabi pang mabuti pa sa Egipto at marami silang pagkain. Kaya, bukas, ibibigay ko sa kanila ang pagkaing gusto nila. 19 Hindi lamang para sa isa, dalawa, lima, sampu, dalawampung araw ang ibibigay ko sa kanila, 20 kundi para sa isang buong buwan. Laging ito ang kakainin nila hanggang sa magsawa sila at magkandasuka sa pagkain nito sapagkat itinakwil nila ako at sinabi pa nilang mabuti pang hindi na sila umalis sa Egipto.”
21 Sumagot si Moises, “Lahat-lahat ng kasama ko'y 600,000, at sinasabi mong bibigyan mo sila ng karne para sa isang buong buwan? 22 Kahit na patayin ang lahat naming hayop o mahuli ang lahat ng isda sa dagat ay hindi sasapat sa ganito karaming tao.”
23 Sinabi ni Yahweh, “Moises, mayroon ba akong hindi kayang gawin? Ngayon di'y ipapakita ko sa iyo kung totoo o hindi ang aking sinasabi.”
24 Lumakad na si Moises at ibinalita sa mga Israelita ang sinabi ni Yahweh. Isinama niya ang pitumpung pinuno ng Israel at pinatayo sa paligid ng Toldang Tipanan. 25 Bumabâ si Yahweh sa ulap at kinausap si Moises. Ang pitumpung matatandang pinuno ay binahaginan nga niya ng espiritu, tulad ng ibinigay niya kay Moises. Sila'y napuspos ng kapangyarihan at nagpropesiya ngunit hindi na nila ito muling nagawa.
26 May naiwang dalawang pinuno sa kampo, Eldad ang pangalan ng isa at Medad naman ang isa. Tinawag silang kasama ng pitumpu ngunit hindi sumama. Gayunman, binahaginan din sila ng espiritu ni Yahweh kaya sila'y nagpahayag din tulad ng mga propeta sa loob ng kampo. 27 Nakita pala sila ng isang binata at patakbo itong nagpunta kay Moises. Sinabi niya, “Sina Eldad at Medad ay nagpapahayag sa kampo.”
28 Dahil dito, sinabi ni Josue na anak ni Nun at lingkod ni Moises, “Bakit di po ninyo sila sawayin?”
29 Ngunit sinabi ni Moises, “Nangangamba ka bang ako'y mababawasan ng karangalan? Gusto ko ngang maging propeta at mapuspos ng espiritu ni Yahweh ang lahat ng mga Israelita.” 30 Si Moises at ang pitumpung pinuno ng Israel ay nagbalik na sa kampo.
Nagpadala ng Napakaraming Pugo si Yahweh
31 Si Yahweh ay nagpadala ng hanging may tangay na laksa-laksang pugo mula sa kabila ng dagat. Ang mga ito'y nagliliparan sa paligid ng kampo. Isang metro lang ang taas ng kanilang lipad mula sa lupa at ang lawak ay isang araw na lakarin sa kabi-kabilang kampo. 32 Lumabas ng kampo ang mga Israelita at nanghuli ng pugo hanggang kinabukasan; ang pinakakaunting nahuli ng isang tao ay aabot sa sampung malalaking sisidlan.[b] Ang mga ito'y ibinilad nila sa paligid ng kampo. 33 Ngunit bago pa lamang nila ito kinakagat, ibinuhos na ni Yahweh ang kanyang galit sa mga Israelita at siya'y nagpadala ng isang kakila-kilabot na salot. 34 Ang lugar na iyon ay tinawag na Kibrot-hataava sapagkat doon nalibing ang mga taong naging hayok sa karne. 35 Mula roon, nagpatuloy sila ng paglalakbay hanggang sa Hazerot.

Het volk klaagt
11 Het volk begon al snel te klagen over allerlei tegenslagen en de Here hoorde dat. Hij werd toornig en stuurde vuur naar beneden dat rond het volk brandde. 2 Daarop schreeuwden de Israëlieten naar Mozes om hulp en toen hij voor hen bad, doofde het vuur. 3 Vanaf dat moment heette die plaats Tabera (Brand), omdat het vuur van de Here daar onder de Israëlieten was opgelaaid.
4,5 Toen begonnen de vreemdelingen die waren meegekomen met de uittocht, terug te verlangen naar het goede leven in Egypte. Zij staken daarmee de Israëlieten aan en die begonnen te jammeren: ‘Och, als we maar wat vlees te eten hadden! Denk eens aan die heerlijke vis die we in Egypte konden eten, aan die komkommers en meloenen, aan dat look, die uien en dat heerlijke knoflook. 6 We verzwakken helemaal en kunnen geen manna meer zien!’ 7 Het manna was ongeveer even groot als korianderzaad en zag er uit als druppels balsemhars die uit de bast van een boom sijpelen. 8 De mensen raapten het van de grond en vermaalden het dan in een handmolen of stampten het fijn met een vijzel. Daarna kookten zij het en bakten er koeken van, die net zo smaakten als in olie gebakken koeken. 9 Samen met de dauw bedekte het manna ʼs nachts het kamp.
10 Mozes hoorde hoe elk gezin bij de ingang van zijn tent stond te klagen. De Here werd steeds toorniger en toen werd het Mozes te veel. 11 Hij zei tegen de Here: ‘Waarom straft U mij door dit volk als een zware last op mijn schouders te leggen? 12 Zijn het mijn kinderen soms? Ben ík hun vader? Hebt U mij daarom als leider met hen meegestuurd om hen de hele reis naar dat land dat U aan hun nageslacht hebt beloofd, zoet te houden alsof het kleine kinderen zijn? 13 Waar moet ik vlees voor al deze mensen vandaan halen? Want zij jammeren tegen mij: “Geef ons vlees.” 14 Ik kan niet alleen voor dit hele volk zorgen! Die last is veel te zwaar! 15 Als U mij dat wilt aandoen, laat mij dan maar liever sterven, dan ben ik tenminste van alle ellende af.’
16 Toen zei de Here tegen Mozes: ‘Ontbied zeventig leiders van Israël voor Mij. Breng hen naar de tabernakel en laten ze bij u gaan staan. 17 Ik zal naar beneden komen en met u praten en een deel van de Geest die op u rust, op hen overbrengen zodat zij u kunnen helpen de last van dit volk te dragen. Dan staat u er niet langer alleen voor. 18 Zeg tegen het volk dat het zich heiligt, want morgen zal het vlees te eten krijgen. Zeg tegen de Israëlieten: de Here heeft uw gejammer gehoord over alles wat u in Egypte hebt achtergelaten. Hij zal u nu vlees te eten geven. En u zúlt vlees eten! 19,20 Niet maar een of twee dagen of vijf of zelfs twintig dagen, maar een hele maand! U zult vlees eten tot het uw neus uitkomt en u ervan walgt! Want u hebt uw verachting voor de Here, die in uw midden is, laten blijken en gejammerd: “Waarom zijn wij toch uit Egypte weggegaan?” ’ 21 Maar Mozes zei: ‘Wij zijn met zeshonderdduizend mensen uit Egypte vertrokken en U belooft ons vlees voor een hele maand! 22 Zelfs als we al onze kudden slachten, zou dat nog niet genoeg zijn voor één maand vlees! We zouden elke vis in de zee moeten vangen om uw belofte waar te maken!’ 23 Toen zei de Here tegen Mozes: ‘Gelooft u Mij niet? Let maar eens op of mijn woorden uitkomen!’
24 Mozes verliet de tabernakel en gaf de boodschap van de Here door aan het volk. Hij riep de zeventig leiders bijeen en posteerde hen rond de tabernakel. 25 De Here kwam in de wolk naar beneden en sprak met Mozes en nam een deel van de Geest die op hem rustte en legde die op de zeventig leiders. Toen de Geest op hen rustte, profeteerden zij een korte tijd. 26 Maar twee van de zeventig, Eldad en Medad, waren niet naar de tabernakel gegaan en profeteerden in het kamp toen de Geest op hen kwam. 27 Een jongeman rende daarop naar Mozes en vertelde hem wat in het kamp gebeurde. 28 Jozua, de zoon van Nun, een van Mozesʼ zelfgekozen helpers, protesteerde: ‘Mozes, laten zij toch ophouden!’ 29 Maar Mozes antwoordde: ‘Wil jij het voor mij opnemen? Ik zou willen dat heel het volk van de Here profeet was en dat de Here zijn Geest op hen allen legde!’ 30 Toen ging Mozes met de leiders terug naar het kamp.
31 De Here liet vanuit zee kwartels meevoeren door de wind. Hij liet de vogels in en rond het kamp neerstrijken. Een dagreis ver vlogen kwartels op een hoogte van ongeveer één meter boven de grond. 32 Het hele volk ging eropuit om kwartels te vangen. Een karwei dat een dag, een nacht en nog een hele dag in beslag nam! Het minste dat iemand verzamelde, was tweeëntwintighonderd liter! Overal rond het kamp lagen de kwartels te drogen. 33 Maar toen iedereen het vlees begon te eten, ontvlamde de toorn van de Here tegen het volk en Hij doodde velen met een plaag. 34 Daarom kreeg die kampplaats de naam Kibrot-Hattaäwa (Graven van de Gulzigaards), want daar begroeven zij de mensen die begerig waren naar vlees en terugverlangden naar Egypte. 35 Van die plaats trokken zij naar Chaserot, waar zij een tijd bleven.

Fire From the Lord
11 Now the people complained(A) about their hardships in the hearing of the Lord,(B) and when he heard them his anger was aroused.(C) Then fire from the Lord burned among them(D) and consumed(E) some of the outskirts of the camp. 2 When the people cried out to Moses, he prayed(F) to the Lord(G) and the fire died down. 3 So that place was called Taberah,[a](H) because fire from the Lord had burned among them.(I)
Quail From the Lord
4 The rabble with them began to crave other food,(J) and again the Israelites started wailing(K) and said, “If only we had meat to eat! 5 We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic.(L) 6 But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!(M)”
7 The manna was like coriander seed(N) and looked like resin.(O) 8 The people went around gathering it,(P) and then ground it in a hand mill or crushed it in a mortar. They cooked it in a pot or made it into loaves. And it tasted like something made with olive oil. 9 When the dew(Q) settled on the camp at night, the manna also came down.
10 Moses heard the people of every family wailing(R) at the entrance to their tents. The Lord became exceedingly angry, and Moses was troubled. 11 He asked the Lord, “Why have you brought this trouble(S) on your servant? What have I done to displease you that you put the burden of all these people on me?(T) 12 Did I conceive all these people? Did I give them birth? Why do you tell me to carry them in my arms, as a nurse carries an infant,(U) to the land you promised on oath(V) to their ancestors?(W) 13 Where can I get meat for all these people?(X) They keep wailing to me, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ 14 I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me.(Y) 15 If this is how you are going to treat me, please go ahead and kill me(Z)—if I have found favor in your eyes—and do not let me face my own ruin.”
16 The Lord said to Moses: “Bring me seventy of Israel’s elders(AA) who are known to you as leaders and officials among the people.(AB) Have them come to the tent of meeting,(AC) that they may stand there with you. 17 I will come down and speak with you(AD) there, and I will take some of the power of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them.(AE) They will share the burden of the people with you so that you will not have to carry it alone.(AF)
18 “Tell the people: ‘Consecrate yourselves(AG) in preparation for tomorrow, when you will eat meat. The Lord heard you when you wailed,(AH) “If only we had meat to eat! We were better off in Egypt!”(AI) Now the Lord will give you meat,(AJ) and you will eat it. 19 You will not eat it for just one day, or two days, or five, ten or twenty days, 20 but for a whole month—until it comes out of your nostrils and you loathe it(AK)—because you have rejected the Lord,(AL) who is among you, and have wailed before him, saying, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?”’”(AM)
21 But Moses said, “Here I am among six hundred thousand men(AN) on foot, and you say, ‘I will give them meat to eat for a whole month!’ 22 Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them?”(AO)
23 The Lord answered Moses, “Is the Lord’s arm too short?(AP) Now you will see whether or not what I say will come true for you.(AQ)”
24 So Moses went out and told the people what the Lord had said. He brought together seventy of their elders and had them stand around the tent. 25 Then the Lord came down in the cloud(AR) and spoke with him,(AS) and he took some of the power of the Spirit(AT) that was on him and put it on the seventy elders.(AU) When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied(AV)—but did not do so again.
26 However, two men, whose names were Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among the elders, but did not go out to the tent. Yet the Spirit also rested on them,(AW) and they prophesied in the camp. 27 A young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”
28 Joshua son of Nun,(AX) who had been Moses’ aide(AY) since youth, spoke up and said, “Moses, my lord, stop them!”(AZ)
29 But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets(BA) and that the Lord would put his Spirit(BB) on them!”(BC) 30 Then Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.
31 Now a wind went out from the Lord and drove quail(BD) in from the sea. It scattered them up to two cubits[b] deep all around the camp, as far as a day’s walk in any direction. 32 All that day and night and all the next day the people went out and gathered quail. No one gathered less than ten homers.[c] Then they spread them out all around the camp. 33 But while the meat was still between their teeth(BE) and before it could be consumed, the anger(BF) of the Lord burned against the people, and he struck them with a severe plague.(BG) 34 Therefore the place was named Kibroth Hattaavah,[d](BH) because there they buried the people who had craved other food.
35 From Kibroth Hattaavah the people traveled to Hazeroth(BI) and stayed there.

2 And the people cried unto Moses; and when Moses prayed unto the Lord, the fire was quenched.
3 And he called the name of the place Taberah: because the fire of the Lord burnt among them.
4 And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?
5 We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick:
6 But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.
7 And the manna was as coriander seed, and the colour thereof as the colour of bdellium.
8 And the people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in a mortar, and baked it in pans, and made cakes of it: and the taste of it was as the taste of fresh oil.
9 And when the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon it.
10 Then Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent: and the anger of the Lord was kindled greatly; Moses also was displeased.
11 And Moses said unto the Lord, Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me?
12 Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers?
13 Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give us flesh, that we may eat.
14 I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.
15 And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favour in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.
16 And the Lord said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee.
17 And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.
18 And say thou unto the people, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow, and ye shall eat flesh: for ye have wept in the ears of the Lord, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat? for it was well with us in Egypt: therefore the Lord will give you flesh, and ye shall eat.
19 Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days;
20 But even a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you: because that ye have despised the Lord which is among you, and have wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt?
21 And Moses said, The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand footmen; and thou hast said, I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month.
22 Shall the flocks and the herds be slain for them, to suffice them? or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to suffice them?
23 And the Lord said unto Moses, Is the Lord'S hand waxed short? thou shalt see now whether my word shall come to pass unto thee or not.
24 And Moses went out, and told the people the words of the Lord, and gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round about the tabernacle.
25 And the Lord came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease.
26 But there remained two of the men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were written, but went not out unto the tabernacle: and they prophesied in the camp.
27 And there ran a young man, and told Moses, and said, Eldad and Medad do prophesy in the camp.
28 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Moses, one of his young men, answered and said, My lord Moses, forbid them.
29 And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the Lord'S people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit upon them!
30 And Moses gat him into the camp, he and the elders of Israel.
31 And there went forth a wind from the Lord, and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, as it were a day's journey on this side, and as it were a day's journey on the other side, round about the camp, and as it were two cubits high upon the face of the earth.
32 And the people stood up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quails: he that gathered least gathered ten homers: and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp.
33 And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the wrath of the Lord was kindled against the people, and the Lord smote the people with a very great plague.
34 And he called the name of that place Kibrothhattaavah: because there they buried the people that lusted.
35 And the people journeyed from Kibrothhattaavah unto Hazeroth; and abode at Hazeroth.

The People Complain

The Seventy Elders
16 So the Lord said to Moses: “Gather to Me (V)seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and (W)officers over them; bring them to the tabernacle of meeting, that they may stand there with you. 17 Then I will come down and talk with you there. (X)I will take of the Spirit that is upon you and will put the same upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you may not bear it yourself alone. 18 Then you shall say to the people, [f]‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you shall eat meat; for you have wept (Y)in the hearing of the Lord, saying, “Who will give us meat to eat? For it was well with us in Egypt.” Therefore the Lord will give you meat, and you shall eat. 19 You shall eat, not one day, nor two days, nor five days, nor ten days, nor twenty days, 20 (Z)but for a whole month, until it comes out of your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you, because you have (AA)despised the Lord who is among you, and have wept before Him, saying, (AB)“Why did we ever come up out of Egypt?” ’ ”
21 And Moses said, (AC)“The people whom I am among are six hundred thousand men on foot; yet You have said, ‘I will give them meat, that they may eat for a whole month.’ 22 (AD)Shall flocks and herds be slaughtered for them, to provide enough for them? Or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to provide enough for them?”
23 And the Lord said to Moses, (AE)“Has[g] the Lord’s arm been shortened? Now you shall see whether (AF)what I say will happen to you or not.”
24 So Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord, and he (AG)gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people and placed them around the tabernacle. 25 Then the Lord came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that was upon him, and placed the same upon the seventy elders; and it happened, (AH)when the Spirit rested upon them, that (AI)they prophesied, [h]although they never did so again.
26 But two men had remained in the camp: the name of one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad. And the Spirit rested upon them. Now they were among those listed, but who (AJ)had not gone out to the tabernacle; yet they prophesied in the camp. 27 And a young man ran and told Moses, and said, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”
28 So Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, one of his choice men, answered and said, “Moses my lord, (AK)forbid them!”
29 Then Moses said to him, “Are you [i]zealous for my sake? (AL)Oh, that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put His Spirit upon them!” 30 And Moses returned to the camp, he and the elders of Israel.
The Lord Sends Quail
31 Now a (AM)wind went out from the Lord, and it brought quail from the sea and left them fluttering near the camp, about a day’s journey on this side and about a day’s journey on the other side, all around the camp, and about two cubits above the surface of the ground. 32 And the people stayed up all that day, all night, and all the next day, and gathered the quail (he who gathered least gathered ten (AN)homers); and they spread them out for themselves all around the camp. 33 But while the (AO)meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, the wrath of the Lord was aroused against the people, and the Lord struck the people with a very great plague. 34 So he called the name of that place [j]Kibroth Hattaavah, because there they buried the people who had yielded to craving.
35 (AP)From Kibroth Hattaavah the people moved to Hazeroth, and camped at Hazeroth.
