Contre l’hypocrisie religieuse
6 Gardez-vous d’accomplir devant les hommes, pour vous faire remarquer par eux, ce que vous faites pour obéir à Dieu, sinon vous n’aurez pas de récompense de votre Père céleste. 2 Ainsi, lorsque tu donnes quelque chose aux pauvres, ne le claironne pas partout. Ce sont les hypocrites qui agissent ainsi dans les synagogues et dans les rues pour que les gens chantent leurs louanges. Vraiment, je vous l’assure : leur récompense, ils l’ont d’ores et déjà reçue. 3 Mais toi, quand tu donnes quelque chose aux pauvres, que ta main gauche ne sache pas ce que fait ta main droite. 4 Que ton aumône se fasse ainsi en secret ; et ton Père, qui voit dans le secret, te le rendra.
5 Quand vous priez, n’imitez pas ces hypocrites qui aiment à faire leurs prières debout dans les synagogues et à l’angle des rues : ils tiennent à être remarqués par tout le monde. Vraiment, je vous l’assure : leur récompense, ils l’ont d’ores et déjà reçue. 6 Mais toi, quand tu veux prier, va dans ta pièce la plus retirée, verrouille ta porte et adresse ta prière à ton Père qui est là dans le lieu secret. Et ton Père, qui voit dans le secret, te le rendra.
7 Dans vos prières, ne rabâchez pas des tas de paroles, à la manière des païens ; ils s’imaginent qu’à force de paroles Dieu les entendra. 8 Ne les imitez pas, car votre Père sait ce qu’il vous faut, avant que vous le lui demandiez.

9 Priez donc ainsi :
Notre Père,
qui es aux cieux,
que ton nom soit sanctifié[a],
10 que ton règne vienne,
que ta volonté soit faite,
sur la terre comme au ciel.
11 Donne-nous aujourd’hui
le pain dont nous avons besoin[b],
12 pardonne-nous nos torts envers toi
comme nous aussi, nous pardonnons

14 En effet, si vous pardonnez aux autres leurs fautes, votre Père céleste vous pardonnera aussi. 15 Mais si vous ne pardonnez pas aux autres, votre Père ne vous pardonnera pas non plus vos fautes.
16 Lorsque vous jeûnez, n’ayez pas, comme les hypocrites, une mine triste. Pour bien montrer aux gens qu’ils jeûnent, ils prennent des visages défaits. Vraiment, je vous l’assure : leur récompense, ils l’ont d’ores et déjà reçue ! 17 Mais toi, quand tu jeûnes, parfume tes cheveux et lave ton visage 18 pour que personne ne se rende compte que tu es en train de jeûner, sauf ton Père qui est là dans le lieu secret. Alors ton Père, qui voit dans le secret, te le rendra.
Les biens matériels(A)
19 Ne vous amassez pas des richesses sur la terre où elles sont à la merci de la rouille, des mites qui rongent, ou des cambrioleurs qui percent les murs pour voler. 20 Amassez-vous plutôt des trésors dans le ciel, où il n’y a ni rouille, ni mites qui rongent, ni cambrioleurs qui percent les murs pour voler. 21 Car là où est ton trésor, là sera aussi ton cœur.

22 Les yeux sont comme une lampe pour le corps ; si donc tes yeux sont en bon état, ton corps entier jouira de la lumière. 23 Mais si tes yeux sont malades, tout ton corps sera plongé dans l’obscurité. Si donc la lumière qui est en toi est obscurcie, dans quelles ténèbres profondes te trouveras-tu !

24 Nul ne peut être en même temps au service de deux maîtres, car ou bien il détestera l’un et aimera l’autre, ou bien il sera dévoué au premier et méprisera le second. Vous ne pouvez pas servir en même temps Dieu et l’Argent[g].

25 C’est pourquoi je vous dis : ne vous inquiétez pas en vous demandant : « Qu’allons-nous manger ou boire ? Avec quoi allons-nous nous habiller ? » La vie ne vaut-elle pas bien plus que la nourriture ? Et le corps ne vaut-il pas bien plus que les vêtements ? 26 Voyez ces oiseaux qui volent dans le ciel, ils ne sèment ni ne moissonnent, ils n’amassent pas de provisions dans des greniers, et votre Père céleste les nourrit. N’avez-vous pas bien plus de valeur qu’eux ? 27 D’ailleurs, qui de vous peut, à force d’inquiétude, prolonger son existence, ne serait-ce que de quelques instants[h] ?
28 Quant aux vêtements, pourquoi vous inquiéter à leur sujet ? Observez les lis sauvages ! Ils poussent sans se fatiguer à tisser des vêtements. 29 Pourtant, je vous l’assure, le roi Salomon lui-même, dans toute sa gloire, n’a jamais été aussi bien vêtu que l’un d’eux ! 30 Si Dieu habille ainsi cette petite plante des champs qui est là aujourd’hui et qui demain sera jetée au feu, à plus forte raison ne vous vêtira-t-il pas vous-mêmes ? Ah, votre foi est bien petite ! 31 Ne vous inquiétez donc pas et ne dites pas : « Que mangerons-nous ? » ou « Que boirons-nous ? » ou « Avec quoi nous habillerons-nous ? » 32 Toutes ces choses, les païens s’en préoccupent sans cesse. Mais votre Père, qui est aux cieux, sait que vous en avez besoin. 33 Faites donc du royaume de Dieu[i] et de ce qui est juste à ses yeux votre préoccupation première, et toutes ces choses vous seront données en plus. 34 Ne vous inquiétez pas pour le lendemain ; le lendemain se souciera de lui-même. A chaque jour suffit sa peine.

6 Gardez-vous de pratiquer votre justice devant les hommes, pour en être vus; autrement, vous n'aurez point de récompense auprès de votre Père qui est dans les cieux.
2 Lors donc que tu fais l'aumône, ne sonne pas de la trompette devant toi, comme font les hypocrites dans les synagogues et dans les rues, afin d'être glorifiés par les hommes. Je vous le dis en vérité, ils reçoivent leur récompense.
3 Mais quand tu fais l'aumône, que ta main gauche ne sache pas ce que fait ta droite,
4 afin que ton aumône se fasse en secret; et ton Père, qui voit dans le secret, te le rendra.
5 Lorsque vous priez, ne soyez pas comme les hypocrites, qui aiment à prier debout dans les synagogues et aux coins des rues, pour être vus des hommes. Je vous le dis en vérité, ils reçoivent leur récompense.
6 Mais quand tu pries, entre dans ta chambre, ferme ta porte, et prie ton Père qui est là dans le lieu secret; et ton Père, qui voit dans le secret, te le rendra.

8 Ne leur ressemblez pas; car votre Père sait de quoi vous avez besoin, avant que vous le lui demandiez.
9 Voici donc comment vous devez prier: Notre Père qui es aux cieux! Que ton nom soit sanctifié;
10 que ton règne vienne; que ta volonté soit faite sur la terre comme au ciel.
11 Donne-nous aujourd'hui notre pain quotidien;
12 pardonne-nous nos offenses, comme nous aussi nous pardonnons à ceux qui nous ont offensés;
13 ne nous induis pas en tentation, mais délivre-nous du malin. Car c'est à toi qu'appartiennent, dans tous les siècles, le règne, la puissance et la gloire. Amen!
14 Si vous pardonnez aux hommes leurs offenses, votre Père céleste vous pardonnera aussi;
15 mais si vous ne pardonnez pas aux hommes, votre Père ne vous pardonnera pas non plus vos offenses.
16 Lorsque vous jeûnez, ne prenez pas un air triste, comme les hypocrites, qui se rendent le visage tout défait, pour montrer aux hommes qu'ils jeûnent. Je vous le dis en vérité, ils reçoivent leur récompense.
17 Mais quand tu jeûnes, parfume ta tête et lave ton visage,
18 afin de ne pas montrer aux hommes que tu jeûnes, mais à ton Père qui est là dans le lieu secret; et ton Père, qui voit dans le secret, te le rendra.
19 Ne vous amassez pas des trésors sur la terre, où la teigne et la rouille détruisent, et où les voleurs percent et dérobent;
20 mais amassez-vous des trésors dans le ciel, où la teigne et la rouille ne détruisent point, et où les voleurs ne percent ni ne dérobent.
21 Car là où est ton trésor, là aussi sera ton coeur.
22 L'oeil est la lampe du corps. Si ton oeil est en bon état, tout ton corps sera éclairé;
23 mais si ton oeil est en mauvais état, tout ton corps sera dans les ténèbres. Si donc la lumière qui est en toi est ténèbres, combien seront grandes ces ténèbres!
24 Nul ne peut servir deux maîtres. Car, ou il haïra l'un, et aimera l'autre; ou il s'attachera à l'un, et méprisera l'autre. Vous ne pouvez servir Dieu et Mamon.
25 C'est pourquoi je vous dis: Ne vous inquiétez pas pour votre vie de ce que vous mangerez, ni pour votre corps, de quoi vous serez vêtus. La vie n'est-elle pas plus que la nourriture, et le corps plus que le vêtement?
26 Regardez les oiseaux du ciel: ils ne sèment ni ne moissonnent, et ils n'amassent rien dans des greniers; et votre Père céleste les nourrit. Ne valez-vous pas beaucoup plus qu'eux?
27 Qui de vous, par ses inquiétudes, peut ajouter une coudée à la durée de sa vie?
28 Et pourquoi vous inquiéter au sujet du vêtement? Considérez comment croissent les lis des champs: ils ne travaillent ni ne filent;
29 cependant je vous dis que Salomon même, dans toute sa gloire, n'a pas été vêtu comme l'un d'eux.
30 Si Dieu revêt ainsi l'herbe des champs, qui existe aujourd'hui et qui demain sera jetée au four, ne vous vêtira-t-il pas à plus forte raison, gens de peu de foi?
31 Ne vous inquiétez donc point, et ne dites pas: Que mangerons-nous? que boirons-nous? de quoi serons-nous vêtus?
32 Car toutes ces choses, ce sont les païens qui les recherchent. Votre Père céleste sait que vous en avez besoin.
33 Cherchez premièrement le royaume et la justice de Dieu; et toutes ces choses vous seront données par-dessus.
34 Ne vous inquiétez donc pas du lendemain; car le lendemain aura soin de lui-même. A chaque jour suffit sa peine.

4 that thy kindness may be in secret, and thy Father who is seeing in secret Himself shall reward thee manifestly.
5 `And when thou mayest pray, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites, because they love in the synagogues, and in the corners of the broad places -- standing -- to pray, that they may be seen of men; verily I say to you, that they have their reward.
6 `But thou, when thou mayest pray, go into thy chamber, and having shut thy door, pray to thy Father who [is] in secret, and thy Father who is seeing in secret, shall reward thee manifestly.
7 `And -- praying -- ye may not use vain repetitions like the nations, for they think that in their much speaking they shall be heard,
8 be ye not therefore like to them, for your Father doth know those things that ye have need of before your asking him;

Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.(B)

5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing(D) in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father,(E) who is unseen. Treasures in Heaven(U)

Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.(AD) Are you not much more valuable than they?(AE) 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[e]?(AF)
28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor(AG) was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?(AH) 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.(AI) 33 But seek first his kingdom(AJ) and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.(AK) 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.
