Matthew 9
Living Bible
9 So Jesus climbed into a boat and went across the lake to Capernaum, his hometown.[a]
2 Soon some men brought him a paralyzed man on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the sick man, “Cheer up, son! For I have forgiven your sins!”
3 “Blasphemy! This man is saying he is God!” exclaimed some of the religious leaders to themselves.
4 Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked them, “Why are you thinking such evil thoughts? 5-6 I, the Messiah,[b] have the authority on earth to forgive sins. But talk is cheap—anybody could say that. So I’ll prove it to you by healing this man.” Then, turning to the paralyzed man, he commanded, “Pick up your stretcher and go on home, for you are healed.”
7 And the man jumped up and left!
8 A chill of fear swept through the crowd as they saw this happen right before their eyes. How they praised God for giving such authority to a man!
9 As Jesus was going on down the road, he saw a tax collector, Matthew,[c] sitting at a tax collection booth. “Come and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him, and Matthew jumped up and went along with him.
10 Later, as Jesus and his disciples were eating dinner at Matthew’s house,[d] there were many notorious swindlers there as guests!
11 The Pharisees were indignant. “Why does your teacher associate with men like that?”
12 “Because people who are well don’t need a doctor! It’s the sick people who do!” was Jesus’ reply. 13 Then he added, “Now go away and learn the meaning of this verse of Scripture,
‘It isn’t your sacrifices and your gifts I want—I want you to be merciful.’[e]
For I have come to urge sinners, not the self-righteous, back to God.”
14 One day the disciples of John the Baptist came to Jesus and asked him, “Why don’t your disciples fast as we do and as the Pharisees do?”
15 “Should the bridegroom’s friends mourn and go without food while he is with them?” Jesus asked. “But the time is coming when I[f] will be taken from them. Time enough then for them to refuse to eat.
16 “And who would patch an old garment with unshrunk cloth? For the patch would tear away and make the hole worse. 17 And who would use old wineskins[g] to store new wine? For the old skins would burst with the pressure, and the wine would be spilled and skins ruined. Only new wineskins are used to store new wine. That way both are preserved.”
18 As he was saying this, the rabbi of the local synagogue came and worshiped him. “My little daughter has just died,” he said, “but you can bring her back to life again if you will only come and touch her.”
19 As Jesus and the disciples were going to the rabbi’s home, 20 a woman who had been sick for twelve years with internal bleeding came up behind him and touched a tassel of his robe, 21 for she thought, “If I only touch him, I will be healed.”
22 Jesus turned around and spoke to her. “Daughter,” he said, “all is well! Your faith has healed you.” And the woman was well from that moment.
23 When Jesus arrived at the rabbi’s home and saw the noisy crowds and heard the funeral music, 24 he said, “Get them out, for the little girl isn’t dead; she is only sleeping!” Then how they all scoffed and sneered at him!
25 When the crowd was finally outside, Jesus went in where the little girl was lying and took her by the hand, and she jumped up and was all right again! 26 The report of this wonderful miracle swept the entire countryside.
27 As Jesus was leaving her home, two blind men followed along behind, shouting, “O Son of King David, have mercy on us.”
28 They went right into the house where he was staying, and Jesus asked them, “Do you believe I can make you see?”
“Yes, Lord,” they told him, “we do.”
29 Then he touched their eyes and said, “Because of your faith it will happen.”
30 And suddenly they could see! Jesus sternly warned them not to tell anyone about it, 31 but instead they spread his fame all over the town.[h]
32 Leaving that place, Jesus met a man who couldn’t speak because a demon was inside him. 33 So Jesus cast out the demon, and instantly the man could talk. How the crowds marveled! “Never in all our lives have we seen anything like this,” they exclaimed.
34 But the Pharisees said, “The reason he can cast out demons is that he is demon-possessed himself—possessed by Satan, the demon king!”
35 Jesus traveled around through all the cities and villages of that area, teaching in the Jewish synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And wherever he went he healed people of every sort of illness. 36 And what pity he felt for the crowds that came, because their problems were so great and they didn’t know what to do or where to go for help. They were like sheep without a shepherd.
37 “The harvest is so great, and the workers are so few,” he told his disciples. 38 “So pray to the one in charge of the harvesting, and ask him to recruit more workers for his harvest fields.”

3 Allora alcuni scribi, dicevano fra sè: «Costui bestemmia!».
4 Ma Gesú, conosciuti i loro pensieri, disse: «Perché pensate cose malvagie nei vostri cuori?
5 Infatti, che cosa è piú facile dire: "I tuoi peccati ti sono perdonati" oppure: "Alzati e cammina?"
6 Ora, affinché sappiate che il Figlio dell'uomo ha autorità in terra di perdonare i peccati: Alzati (disse al paralitico), prendi il tuo letto e vattene a casa tua!».
7 Ed egli, alzatosi, se ne andò a casa sua.
8 Le folle, veduto ciò, si meravigliavano e glorificavano Dio, che aveva dato tale potere agli uomini.
9 Poi Gesú, passando oltre, vide un uomo che sedeva al banco delle imposte, chiamato Matteo, e gli disse: «Seguimi!». Ed egli, alzatosi, lo seguí.
10 E avvenne che, mentre Gesú era a tavola in casa, molti pubblicani e peccatori vennero e si misero a tavola con lui e con i suoi discepoli.
11 I farisei, veduto ciò, dissero ai suoi discepoli: «Perché il vostro Maestro mangia insieme ai pubblicani, e ai peccatori?».
12 E Gesú, avendo sentito, disse loro: «Non sono i sani che hanno bisogno del medico, ma i malati.
13 Or andate e imparate che cosa significa: "Io voglio misericordia e non sacrificio Perché io non sono venuto per chiamare a ravvedimento i giusti, ma i peccatori».
14 Allora si accostarono a lui i discepoli di Giovanni, e gli dissero: «Perché noi e i farisei digiuniamo spesso, mentre i tuoi discepoli non digiunano?».
15 E Gesú disse loro: «Possono gli amici dello sposo essere in lutto mentre lo sposo è con loro? Ma verranno i giorni in cui lo sposo sarà loro tolto e allora digiuneranno.
16 Nessuno mette un pezzo di stoffa nuova su di un abito vecchio, perché ciò porta via il rattoppo e lo strappo si fa peggiore.
17 Neppure si mette del vino nuovo in otri vecchi; altrimenti gli otri si rompono, il vino si spande e gli otri si perdono; ma si mette il vino nuovo in otri nuovi, cosí si conservano entrambi».
18 Mentre egli diceva loro queste cose, uno dei capi della sinagoga, si avvicinò e si inchinò davanti a lui, dicendo: «Mia figlia è morta proprio ora, ma vieni, metti la mano su di lei ed ella vivrà».
19 E Gesú, alzatosi, lo seguí insieme ai suoi discepoli.
20 Ed ecco una donna, affetta da un flusso di sangue già da dodici anni, gli si accostò di dietro e toccò il lembo della sua veste.
21 Perché diceva fra sé: «Se riuscirò anche solo a toccare la sua veste sarò guarita».
22 Gesú, voltatosi e vedutala, le disse «Fatti animo, figliola, la tua fede ti ha guarita». Da quell'ora la donna fu guarita.
23 Quando Gesú arrivò in casa del capo della sinagoga e vide i sonatori di flauto e la folla che faceva strepito,
24 disse loro: «Ritiratevi, perché la fanciulla non è morta, ma dorme» Ed essi lo deridevano.
25 Poi, quando la folla fu messa fuori, egli entrò, prese la fanciulla per la mano ed ella si alzò.
26 La fama di ciò si divulgò per tutto quel paese.
27 E, mentre Gesú partiva di là, due ciechi lo seguirono gridando e dicendo: «Abbi pietà di noi, Figlio di Davide!».
28 Quando egli entrò in casa, quei ciechi si accostarono a lui. Gesú disse loro: «Credete che io possa far questo?». Essi gli risposero: «Sí, Signore».
29 Allora egli toccò loro gli occhi dicendo: «Vi sia fatto secondo la vostra fede».
30 E i loro occhi si aprirono. Poi Gesú ordinò loro severamente, dicendo: «Badate che nessuno lo sappia».
31 Ma essi, usciti fuori, divulgarono la sua fama per tutto quel paese.
32 Ora, come quei ciechi uscivano, gli fu presentato un uomo muto e indemoniato,
33 E, quando il demone fu scacciato, il muto parlò e le folle si meravigliarono dicendo: «Non si è mai vista una simile cosa in Israele».
34 Ma i farisei dicevano: «Egli scaccia i demoni con l'aiuto del principe dei demoni!».
35 E Gesú andava attorno per tutte le città e i villaggi, insegnando nelle loro sinagoghe, predicando l'evangelo del regno e guarendo ogni malattia e ogni infermità fra il popolo.
36 Vedendo le folle, ne ebbe compassione perché erano stanche e disperse, come pecore senza pastore.
37 Allora egli disse ai suoi discepoli: «La mèsse è veramente grande, ma gli operai sono pochi.
38 Pregate dunque il Signore della mèsse che spinga degli operai nella sua mèsse».

9 And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city.
2 And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.
3 And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth.
4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?
5 For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk?
6 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house.
7 And he arose, and departed to his house.
8 But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.
9 And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.
10 And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples.
11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?
12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.
13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
14 Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not?
15 And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast.
16 No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse.
17 Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.
18 While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.
19 And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples.
20 And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment:
21 For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.
22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.
23 And when Jesus came into the ruler's house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise,
24 He said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn.
25 But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose.
26 And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land.
27 And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou son of David, have mercy on us.
28 And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.
29 Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.
30 And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it.
31 But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country.
32 As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil.
33 And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel.
34 But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils.
35 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.
36 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.
37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;
38 Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralytic(A)

Matthew the Tax Collector(G)
9 (H)As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” So he arose and followed Him.
10 (I)Now it happened, as Jesus sat at the table in the house, that behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Him and His disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to His disciples, “Why does your Teacher eat with (J)tax collectors and (K)sinners?”

Jesus Is Questioned About Fasting(N)

A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed(R)
18 (S)While He spoke these things to them, behold, a ruler came and worshiped Him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay Your hand on her and she will live.” 19 So Jesus arose and followed him, and so did His (T)disciples.
20 (U)And suddenly, a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and (V)touched the hem of His garment. 21 For she said to herself, “If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.” 22 But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her He said, “Be of good cheer, daughter; (W)your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that hour.
23 (X)When Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw (Y)the flute players and the noisy crowd wailing, 24 He said to them, (Z)“Make room, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping.” And they ridiculed Him. 25 But when the crowd was put outside, He went in and (AA)took her by the hand, and the girl arose. 26 And the (AB)report of this went out into all that land.
Two Blind Men Healed
27 When Jesus departed from there, (AC)two blind men followed Him, crying out and saying, (AD)“Son of David, have mercy on us!”
28 And when He had come into the house, the blind men came to Him. And Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”
They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.”
29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith let it be to you.” 30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, saying, (AE)“See that no one knows it.” 31 (AF)But when they had departed, they [g]spread the news about Him in all that [h]country.
A Mute Man Speaks
32 (AG)As they went out, behold, they brought to Him a man, mute and demon-possessed. 33 And when the demon was cast out, the mute spoke. And the multitudes marveled, saying, “It was never seen like this in Israel!”
34 But the Pharisees said, (AH)“He casts out demons by the ruler of the demons.”
The Compassion of Jesus(AI)
