International Children’s Bible

Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man

9 Jesus got into a boat and went back across the lake to his own town. 2 Some people brought to Jesus a man who was paralyzed. The man was lying on his mat. Jesus saw that these people had great faith, so he said to the paralyzed man, “Be happy, young man. Your sins are forgiven.”

3 Some of the teachers of the law heard this. They said to themselves, “This man speaks as if he were God—that is blasphemy!”[a]

4 Jesus knew what they were thinking. So he said, “Why are you thinking evil thoughts? 5 Which is easier: to tell this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to tell him, ‘Stand up and walk’? 6 But I will prove to you that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “Stand up. Take your mat and go home.” 7 And the man stood up and went home. 8 The people saw this and were amazed. They praised God for giving power like this to men.

Jesus Chooses Matthew

9 When Jesus was leaving, he saw a man named Matthew. Matthew was sitting in the tax office. Jesus said to him, “Follow me.” And Matthew stood up and followed Jesus.

10 Jesus had dinner at Matthew’s house. Many tax collectors and “sinners” came and ate with Jesus and his followers. 11 The Pharisees saw this and asked Jesus’ followers, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and ‘sinners’?”

12 Jesus heard the Pharisees ask this. So he said, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor. Only the sick need a doctor. 13 Go and learn what this means: ‘I want faithful love more than I want animal sacrifices.’[b] I did not come to invite good people. I came to invite sinners.”

Jesus Is Not Like Other Jews

14 Then the followers of John[c] came to Jesus. They said to Jesus, “We and the Pharisees often give up eating.[d] But your followers don’t. Why?”

15 Jesus answered, “The friends of the bridegroom are not sad while he is with them. But the time will come when the bridegroom will leave them. Then his friends are sad, and they will give up eating.

16 “When someone sews a patch over a hole in an old coat, he never uses a piece of cloth that is not yet shrunk. If he does, the patch will shrink and pull away from the coat. Then the hole will be worse. 17 Also, people never pour new wine into old leather bags for holding wine. If they do, the old bags will break. The wine will spill, and the wine bags will be ruined. But people always pour new wine into new wine bags. Then the wine and the wine bags will continue to be good.”

Jesus Gives Life to a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman

18 While Jesus was saying these things, a ruler of the synagogue came to him. The ruler bowed down before Jesus and said, “My daughter has just died. But come and touch her with your hand, and she will live again.”

19 So Jesus stood up and went with the ruler. Jesus’ followers went too.

20 Then a woman who had been bleeding for 12 years came behind Jesus and touched the edge of his coat. 21 She was thinking, “If I can touch his coat, then I will be healed.”

22 Jesus turned and saw the woman. He said, “Be happy, dear woman. You are made well because you believed.” And the woman was healed at once.

23 Jesus continued along with the ruler and went into the ruler’s house. Jesus saw people there who play music for funerals. And he saw many people there crying. 24 Jesus said, “Go away. The girl is not dead. She is only asleep.” But the people laughed at Jesus. 25 After the crowd had been put outside, Jesus went into the girl’s room. He took her hand, and she stood up. 26 The news about this spread all around the area.

Jesus Heals More People

27 When Jesus was leaving there, two blind men followed him. They cried out, “Show kindness to us, Son of David!”

28 Jesus went inside, and the blind men went with him. He asked the men, “Do you believe that I can make you see again?”

They answered, “Yes, Lord.”

29 Then Jesus touched their eyes and said, “You believe that I can make you see again. So this will happen.” 30 Then the men were able to see. But Jesus warned them very strongly, saying, “Don’t tell anyone about this.” 31 But the blind men left and spread the news about Jesus all around that area.

32 When the two men were leaving, some people brought another man to Jesus. This man could not talk because he had a demon in him. 33 Jesus forced the demon to leave the man. Then the man who couldn’t talk was able to speak. The crowd was amazed and said, “We have never seen anything like this in Israel.”

34 But the Pharisees said, “The leader of demons is the one that gives him power to force demons out.”

35 Jesus traveled through all the towns and villages. He taught in their synagogues and told people the Good News about the kingdom. And he healed all kinds of diseases and sicknesses. 36 He saw the crowds of people and felt sorry for them because they were worried and helpless. They were like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Jesus said to his followers, “There are many people to harvest, but there are only a few workers to help harvest them. 38 God owns the harvest. Pray to him that he will send more workers to help gather his harvest.”[e]

Jesus botar en förlamad man

9 Jesus steg sedan i en båt och åkte över till staden där han bodde. 2 Där kom de till honom med en förlamad man som låg på en bår. Och när Jesus såg deras tro, sa han till den förlamade: ”Var vid gott mod, min son. Dina synder är förlåtna.”

3 Några av de skriftlärda sa då för sig själva: ”Han hädar[a] ju!” 4 Men Jesus visste vad de tänkte och frågade dem: ”Varför tänker ni onda tankar i era hjärtan? 5 Vilket är lättare, att säga: ’Dina synder är förlåtna’, eller: ’Res dig upp och gå?’ ” 6 ”Men för att ni ska veta att Människosonen har makt att förlåta synder här på jorden,” – nu talade han till den förlamade: ”Res dig upp, ta din bår och gå hem!” 7 Och mannen reste sig och gick hem.

8 När folket såg vad som hände blev de alldeles förskräckta, och de hyllade Gud för att han gett sådan makt till människor.

Jesus kallar en tullindrivare att följa honom

(Mark 2:14-17; Luk 5:27-32)

9 När Jesus gick vidare därifrån fick han se en tullindrivare som hette Matteus sitta utanför tullhuset. ”Kom och följ mig”, sa Jesus till honom. Och Matteus reste sig och följde Jesus.

10 När Jesus senare åt i hans hus, fanns där många tullindrivare och syndare som åt tillsammans med honom och lärjungarna.

11 Fariseerna var upprörda. ”Hur kan er mästare äta tillsammans med tullindrivare och syndare?” frågade de Jesus lärjungar. 12 Men Jesus hörde det och sa: ”Det är inte de friska som behöver läkare, utan de sjuka. 13 Gå härifrån och försök förstå vad som menas med detta: ’Jag vill hellre ha nåd än slaktoffer.’[b] Jag har nämligen inte kommit för att kalla rättfärdiga utan syndare.”

Jesus svarar på en fråga om fasta

(Mark 2:18-22; Luk 5:33-39)

14 En dag kom Johannes döparens lärjungar till Jesus och frågade honom: ”Varför fastar inte dina lärjungar som vi och fariseerna gör?”

15 Jesus svarade: ”Bröllopsgästerna kan väl inte sörja medan brudgummen är hos dem? Men en dag ska han tas ifrån dem, och då kommer de att fasta. 16 Ingen lagar ett gammalt klädesplagg med ett stycke nytt, okrympt tyg, för då krymper det nya tyget och river sönder plagget, så att hålet blir ännu större. 17 Och ingen häller nytt vin i gamla vinsäckar, för när vinet jäser sprängs säckarna och blir förstörda, och vinet rinner ut. Nej, nytt vin häller man i nya säckar, för då har man både vin och säckar kvar.”

Jesus botar en kvinna med blödningar och uppväcker en död flicka

(Mark 5:22-43; Luk 8:41-56)

18 Under tiden som Jesus sa detta kom en föreståndare och föll ner inför honom. ”Min dotter har just dött”, sa han. ”Kom och lägg händerna på henne, så får hon liv igen.”

19 Då reste sig Jesus och följde med mannen, tillsammans med sina lärjungar. 20 Men då kom en kvinna, som under tolv års tid lidit av blödningar. Hon närmade sig Jesus bakifrån och rörde vid tofsen på hans mantel, 21 för hon tänkte: ”Om jag bara får röra vid hans kläder så kommer jag att bli frisk.” 22 Då vände Jesus sig om och fick se henne: ”Min dotter”, sa han, ”var inte orolig![c] Din tro har gjort dig frisk[d].” Och från den stunden var kvinnan frisk.

23 När Jesus sedan kom fram till föreståndarens hus och såg flöjtblåsarna och folkskaran som klagade högljutt, 24 sa han: ”Gå ut härifrån. Flickan är inte död, hon sover.”

Då hånskrattade de åt honom. 25 Men när folket hade körts ut ur huset, gick Jesus in i rummet där flickan låg och tog henne i handen. Och genast reste hon sig upp. 26 Ryktet om detta spred sig sedan i hela området.

Jesus botar blinda och stumma

27 När Jesus gick därifrån följde två blinda män efter honom och ropade: ”Jesus, Davids Son,[e] förbarma dig över oss!” 28 De gick efter honom ända in i det hus där han bodde. Och Jesus frågade dem: ”Tror ni att jag kan göra det?”

”Ja, Herre”, svarade de. ”Det gör vi.”

29 Då rörde han vid deras ögon och sa: ”Eftersom ni tror, ska det också bli så.” 30 Och plötsligt kunde de se.

Jesus varnade dem sedan strängt för att berätta detta för någon, 31 men trots det var ryktet om honom snart ute över hela trakten.

32 När de båda männen var på väg ut, kom man till Jesus med en besatt man som inte kunde tala. 33 Jesus drev då ut den onda anden, och den stumme började tala. Folk blev häpna och sa: ”Aldrig förr har något sådant hänt i Israel!”

34 Men fariseerna sa: ”Han driver ut de onda andarna med hjälp av de onda andarnas härskare.”

Jesus uppmanar sina lärjungar att be om arbetare

35 Jesus vandrade omkring i alla städer och byar och undervisade i synagogorna. Och vart han än kom förkunnade han evangeliet om riket, och han botade alla slags sjukdomar och plågor. 36 När han såg människorna kände han medlidande med dem, eftersom de var nedslagna och hjälplösa, som får utan herde.

37 ”Skörden är stor, men arbetarna är få”, sa han till sina lärjungar. 38 ”Be därför skördens Herre att han skickar ut fler arbetare på fälten.”

9 Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town.(B) 2 Some men brought to him a paralyzed man,(C) lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith,(D) he said to the man, “Take heart,(E) son; your sins are forgiven.”(F)

3 At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!”(G)

4 Knowing their thoughts,(H) Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? 5 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 6 But I want you to know that the Son of Man(I) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” 7 Then the man got up and went home. 8 When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God,(J) who had given such authority to man.

The Calling of Matthew(K)

9 As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,”(L) he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.

10 While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”(M)

12 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’[a](N) For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”(O)

Jesus Questioned About Fasting(P)

14 Then John’s(Q) disciples came and asked him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often,(R) but your disciples do not fast?”

15 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them?(S) The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.(T)

16 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. 17 Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”

Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(U)

18 While he was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before him(V) and said, “My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her,(W) and she will live.” 19 Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples.

20 Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak.(X) 21 She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.”

22 Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart,(Y) daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.”(Z) And the woman was healed at that moment.(AA)

23 When Jesus entered the synagogue leader’s house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes,(AB) 24 he said, “Go away. The girl is not dead(AC) but asleep.”(AD) But they laughed at him. 25 After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up.(AE) 26 News of this spread through all that region.(AF)

Jesus Heals the Blind and the Mute

27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”(AG)

28 When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”

“Yes, Lord,” they replied.(AH)

29 Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you”;(AI) 30 and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.”(AJ) 31 But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.(AK)

32 While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed(AL) and could not talk(AM) was brought to Jesus. 33 And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.”(AN)

34 But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.”(AO)

The Workers Are Few

35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.(AP) 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them,(AQ) because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.(AR) 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest(AS) is plentiful but the workers are few.(AT) 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

3 And at once some of the scribes said within themselves, “This Man blasphemes!”

4 But Jesus, (E)knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? 5 For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk’? 6 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—then He said to the paralytic, “Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” 7 And he arose and departed to his house.

8 Now when the multitudes saw it, they (F)marveled[a] and glorified God, who had given such power to men.

Matthew the Tax Collector(G)

9 (H)As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” So he arose and followed Him.

10 (I)Now it happened, as Jesus sat at the table in the house, that behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Him and His disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to His disciples, “Why does your Teacher eat with (J)tax collectors and (K)sinners?”

12 When Jesus heard that, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: (L)‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’ For I did not come to call the righteous, (M)but sinners, [b]to repentance.”

Jesus Is Questioned About Fasting(N)

14 Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying, (O)“Why do we and the Pharisees fast [c]often, but Your disciples do not fast?”

15 And Jesus said to them, “Can (P)the [d]friends of the bridegroom mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and (Q)then they will fast. 16 No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for [e]the patch pulls away from the garment, and the tear is made worse. 17 Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins [f]break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”

A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed(R)

18 (S)While He spoke these things to them, behold, a ruler came and worshiped Him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay Your hand on her and she will live.” 19 So Jesus arose and followed him, and so did His (T)disciples.

20 (U)And suddenly, a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and (V)touched the hem of His garment. 21 For she said to herself, “If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.” 22 But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her He said, “Be of good cheer, daughter; (W)your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that hour.

23 (X)When Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw (Y)the flute players and the noisy crowd wailing, 24 He said to them, (Z)“Make room, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping.” And they ridiculed Him. 25 But when the crowd was put outside, He went in and (AA)took her by the hand, and the girl arose. 26 And the (AB)report of this went out into all that land.

Two Blind Men Healed

27 When Jesus departed from there, (AC)two blind men followed Him, crying out and saying, (AD)“Son of David, have mercy on us!”

28 And when He had come into the house, the blind men came to Him. And Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”

They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.”

29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith let it be to you.” 30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, saying, (AE)“See that no one knows it.” 31 (AF)But when they had departed, they [g]spread the news about Him in all that [h]country.

A Mute Man Speaks

32 (AG)As they went out, behold, they brought to Him a man, mute and demon-possessed. 33 And when the demon was cast out, the mute spoke. And the multitudes marveled, saying, “It was never seen like this in Israel!”

34 But the Pharisees said, (AH)“He casts out demons by the ruler of the demons.”

The Compassion of Jesus(AI)

35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, (AJ)teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease [i]among the people. 36 (AK)But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were [j]weary and scattered, (AL)like sheep having no shepherd. 37 Then He said to His disciples, (AM)“The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. 38 (AN)Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”
