Matthew 8

8 When Jesus came down from the hill, many people followed him.
2 A man who had leprosy [a bad skin disease] came and kneeled in front of Jesus and worshipped him. He said to Jesus, `Sir, I know you can heal me if you want to.'
3 Jesus put out his hand and touched him. He said, `I want to. Be healed.' Right away his leprosy was healed.
4 Jesus said to him, `Do not tell anyone about this. But go and let the priest look at you. Moses gave a law about the sacrifice you must give when you are healed. Give it, to prove to people you are healed.'
5 When Jesus came to the town of Capernaum, a Roman army officer came to ask him for help.
6 He said, `Sir, one of my servants is in bed at my house. He cannot move and has much pain.'
7 Jesus said, `I will come and heal him.'
8 The officer said, `Sir, I am not good enough to have you come into my house. Just say the word and my servant will be healed.
9 I myself am a man who takes orders, and I have soldiers who take orders from me. I say to one, "Go," and he goes. I say to another one, "Come," and he comes. I say to my servant, "Do this," and he does it.'
10 Jesus was surprised when he heard this. He said to the people who followed him, `I tell you the truth. I have not found any Jew who believes as this man does.
11 I tell you, many people will come from the east and from the west. They will sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.
12 But those who were born in the kingdom will be put into the darkness outside. There they will cry and make noises with their teeth.'
13 Jesus said to the officer, `Go home. What you have believed, will be done.' At that very same time the officer's servant was healed.
14 Jesus went into Peter's house. There he saw the mother of Peter's wife in bed, sick with fever.
15 Jesus took hold of her hand and the fever left her. She got up and began to do things for Jesus.
16 That evening, many people who had bad spirits were brought to Jesus. He spoke to the bad spirits and drove them out. And he healed all the people who were sick.
17 What the prophet Isaiah said came true. He said, `He took away the things that made us weak. He took away the things that made us sick.'
18 Jesus saw many people around him. So he said, `Let us cross over to the other side of the sea.'
19 A scribe came and said to him, `Teacher, I will go anywhere you go.'
20 Jesus said, `Foxes have holes to live in. Birds have nests. But the Son of Man has no place to lie down to rest.'
21 Another man who was a follower of Jesus, said to Jesus, `Lord, let me go first and bury my father.'
22 But Jesus said to him, `Come with me. Let those who are dead bury their own dead people.'
23 Jesus got in the boat and his disciples got in with him.
24 A bad storm came on the sea. The waves were high. Water came into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.
25 The disciples came to Jesus and woke him. `Lord, save us!' they shouted. `We will die!'
26 Jesus said to them, `Why do you fear? You do not believe in God very much!' Then Jesus got up. He said to the winds and the sea, `Stop!' Then all was quiet.
27 The disciples were surprised. They said `What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the sea obey him.'
28 Jesus came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarene people. There were graves in that place. Two men came from among the graves to meet him. They had bad spirits in them. They were so bad and strong that people feared to pass that way.
29 They shouted, `Jesus, Son of God, what do you want to do to us? Have you come here to punish us before it is our time?'
30 Many pigs were eating in a place far from them.
31 The bad spirits begged Jesus, `If you drive us out of these men, let us go into the pigs.'
32 Jesus said, `Go!' The spirits came out of the men and went into the pigs. All the pigs ran fast down the steep hill into the sea. They died in the water.
33 The men who cared for the pigs ran to the town. They told everything and what had happened to the men who had the bad spirits.
34 All the people in the town came out to meet Jesus. When they saw him, they begged him to go away out of their country

Jesus cura um leproso
8 Quando Jesus desceu a encosta do monte, grandes multidões o seguiram. 2 Um leproso aproximou-se de Jesus, ajoelhou-se diante dele e disse: “Senhor, se quiser, pode me curar e me deixar limpo”.
3 Jesus estendeu a mão e tocou nele. “Eu quero”, respondeu. “Seja curado e fique limpo!” No mesmo instante, o homem foi curado da lepra. 4 Então Jesus disse ao homem: “Não conte isso a ninguém. Vá e apresente-se ao sacerdote para que ele o examine. Leve a oferta que a lei de Moisés exige.[a] Isso servirá como testemunho”.
Um oficial romano demonstra fé
5 Quando Jesus chegou a Cafarnaum, um oficial romano[b] se aproximou dele e suplicou: 6 “Senhor, meu jovem servo[c] está de cama, paralisado e com dores terríveis”.
7 Jesus disse: “Vou até lá para curá-lo”.
8 O oficial, porém, respondeu: “Senhor, não mereço que entre em minha casa. Basta uma ordem sua, e meu servo será curado. 9 Sei disso porque estou sob a autoridade de meus superiores e tenho autoridade sobre meus soldados. Só preciso dizer ‘Vão’, e eles vão, ou ‘Venham’, e eles vêm. E, se digo a meus escravos: ‘Façam isto’, eles o fazem”.
10 Quando Jesus ouviu isso, ficou admirado e disse aos que o seguiam: “Eu lhes digo a verdade: jamais vi fé como esta em Israel! 11 E também lhes digo: muitos virão de toda parte, do leste e do oeste, e se sentarão com Abraão, Isaque e Jacó no banquete do reino dos céus. 12 Mas muitos para os quais o reino foi preparado serão lançados fora, na escuridão, onde haverá choro e ranger de dentes”.
13 Então Jesus disse ao oficial romano: “Volte para casa. Tal como você creu, assim acontecerá”. E o jovem servo foi curado na mesma hora.
Jesus cura muitas pessoas
14 Quando Jesus chegou à casa de Pedro, viu que a sogra dele estava de cama, com febre. 15 Jesus tocou em sua mão e a febre a deixou. Então ela se levantou e passou a servi-lo.
16 Ao entardecer, trouxeram a Jesus muita gente possuída por demônios. Ele expulsou esses espíritos impuros com uma simples ordem e curou todos os enfermos. 17 Cumpriu-se, desse modo, o que foi dito pelo profeta Isaías:
“Levou sobre si nossas enfermidades
e removeu nossas doenças”.[d]
O preço de seguir Jesus
18 Quando Jesus viu a grande multidão ao seu redor, ordenou que atravessassem para o outro lado do mar.
19 Então um dos mestres da lei lhe disse: “Mestre, eu o seguirei aonde quer que vá”.
20 Jesus respondeu: “As raposas têm tocas onde morar e as aves têm ninhos, mas o Filho do Homem não tem sequer um lugar para recostar a cabeça”.
21 Outro discípulo disse: “Senhor, deixe-me primeiro sepultar meu pai”.
22 Jesus respondeu: “Siga-me agora. Deixe que os mortos sepultem seus próprios mortos”.
Jesus acalma a tempestade
23 Em seguida, Jesus entrou no barco, e seus discípulos o acompanharam. 24 De repente, veio sobre o mar uma tempestade violenta, com ondas que cobriam o barco. Jesus, no entanto, dormia. 25 Os discípulos foram acordá-lo, clamando: “Senhor, salve-nos! Vamos morrer!”.
26 “Por que vocês estão com medo?”, perguntou ele. “Como é pequena a sua fé!” Então levantou-se, repreendeu o vento e o mar, e houve grande calmaria.
27 Os discípulos ficaram admirados. “Quem é este homem?”, diziam eles. “Até os ventos e o mar lhe obedecem!”
Jesus exerce autoridade sobre demônios
28 Quando Jesus chegou ao outro lado do mar, à região dos gadarenos,[e] dois homens possuídos por demônios saíram do cemitério e foram ao seu encontro. Eram tão violentos que ninguém podia passar por ali.
29 Eles começaram a gritar: “Por que vem nos importunar, Filho de Deus? Veio aqui para nos atormentar antes do tempo determinado?”.
30 A certa distância deles, havia uma grande manada de porcos pastando. 31 Então os demônios suplicaram: “Se vai nos expulsar, mande-nos entrar naquela manada de porcos”.
32 “Vão!”, ordenou Jesus. Os demônios saíram dos homens e entraram nos porcos, e toda a manada se atirou pela encosta íngreme do monte para dentro do mar e se afogou.
33 Os que cuidavam dos porcos fugiram para uma cidade próxima e contaram a todos o que havia ocorrido com os homens possuídos por demônios. 34 Os habitantes da cidade saíram ao encontro de Jesus e suplicaram que ele fosse embora da região.
