Giving to the Needy

“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them.(A) If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.(B)

Prayer(C)

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing(D) in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father,(E) who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling(F) like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.(G) Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need(H) before you ask him.

“This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father(I) in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom(J) come,
your will be done,(K)
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.(L)
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.(M)
13 And lead us not into temptation,[a](N)
but deliver us from the evil one.[b](O)

14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.(P) 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.(Q)

Fasting

16 “When you fast,(R) do not look somber(S) as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.(T)

Treasures in Heaven(U)

19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,(V) where moths and vermin destroy,(W) and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,(X) where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.(Y) 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.(Z)

22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy,[c] your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy,[d] your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.(AA)

Do Not Worry(AB)

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry(AC) about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.(AD) Are you not much more valuable than they?(AE) 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[e]?(AF)

28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor(AG) was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?(AH) 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.(AI) 33 But seek first his kingdom(AJ) and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.(AK) 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

The Angel of the Lord at Bokim

The angel of the Lord(A) went up from Gilgal(B) to Bokim(C) and said, “I brought you up out of Egypt(D) and led you into the land I swore to give to your ancestors.(E) I said, ‘I will never break my covenant with you,(F) and you shall not make a covenant with the people of this land,(G) but you shall break down their altars.(H)’ Yet you have disobeyed(I) me. Why have you done this? And I have also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you;(J) they will become traps(K) for you, and their gods will become snares(L) to you.’”

When the angel of the Lord had spoken these things to all the Israelites, the people wept aloud,(M) and they called that place Bokim.[a](N) There they offered sacrifices to the Lord.

Disobedience and Defeat(O)

After Joshua had dismissed the Israelites, they went to take possession of the land, each to their own inheritance. The people served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had seen all the great things the Lord had done for Israel.(P)

Joshua son of Nun,(Q) the servant of the Lord, died at the age of a hundred and ten. And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Heres[b](R) in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

10 After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel.(S) 11 Then the Israelites did evil(T) in the eyes of the Lord(U) and served the Baals.(V) 12 They forsook the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshiped various gods(W) of the peoples around them.(X) They aroused(Y) the Lord’s anger(Z) 13 because they forsook(AA) him and served Baal and the Ashtoreths.(AB) 14 In his anger(AC) against Israel the Lord gave them into the hands(AD) of raiders who plundered(AE) them. He sold them(AF) into the hands of their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist.(AG) 15 Whenever Israel went out to fight, the hand of the Lord was against them(AH) to defeat them, just as he had sworn to them. They were in great distress.(AI)

16 Then the Lord raised up judges,[c](AJ) who saved(AK) them out of the hands of these raiders. 17 Yet they would not listen to their judges but prostituted(AL) themselves to other gods(AM) and worshiped them.(AN) They quickly turned(AO) from the ways of their ancestors, who had been obedient to the Lord’s commands.(AP) 18 Whenever the Lord raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved(AQ) them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived; for the Lord relented(AR) because of their groaning(AS) under those who oppressed and afflicted(AT) them. 19 But when the judge died, the people returned to ways even more corrupt(AU) than those of their ancestors,(AV) following other gods and serving and worshiping them.(AW) They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn(AX) ways.

20 Therefore the Lord was very angry(AY) with Israel and said, “Because this nation has violated the covenant(AZ) I ordained for their ancestors and has not listened to me, 21 I will no longer drive out(BA) before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died. 22 I will use them to test(BB) Israel and see whether they will keep the way of the Lord and walk in it as their ancestors did.” 23 The Lord had allowed those nations to remain; he did not drive them out at once by giving them into the hands of Joshua.(BC)

These are the nations the Lord left to test(BD) all those Israelites who had not experienced any of the wars in Canaan (he did this only to teach warfare to the descendants of the Israelites who had not had previous battle experience): the five(BE) rulers of the Philistines,(BF) all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites(BG) living in the Lebanon mountains from Mount Baal Hermon(BH) to Lebo Hamath.(BI) They were left to test(BJ) the Israelites to see whether they would obey the Lord’s commands, which he had given their ancestors through Moses.

The Israelites lived(BK) among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites,(BL) Hivites and Jebusites.(BM) They took their daughters(BN) in marriage and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.(BO)

Othniel

The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord; they forgot the Lord(BP) their God and served the Baals and the Asherahs.(BQ) The anger of the Lord burned against Israel so that he sold(BR) them into the hands of Cushan-Rishathaim(BS) king of Aram Naharaim,[d](BT) to whom the Israelites were subject for eight years. But when they cried out(BU) to the Lord, he raised up for them a deliverer,(BV) Othniel(BW) son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, who saved them. 10 The Spirit of the Lord came on him,(BX) so that he became Israel’s judge[e] and went to war. The Lord gave Cushan-Rishathaim(BY) king of Aram(BZ) into the hands of Othniel, who overpowered him. 11 So the land had peace(CA) for forty years,(CB) until Othniel son of Kenaz(CC) died.

Ehud

12 Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord,(CD) and because they did this evil the Lord gave Eglon king of Moab(CE) power over Israel. 13 Getting the Ammonites(CF) and Amalekites(CG) to join him, Eglon came and attacked Israel, and they took possession of the City of Palms.[f](CH) 14 The Israelites were subject to Eglon king of Moab(CI) for eighteen years.

15 Again the Israelites cried out to the Lord, and he gave them a deliverer(CJ)—Ehud(CK), a left-handed(CL) man, the son of Gera the Benjamite. The Israelites sent him with tribute(CM) to Eglon king of Moab. 16 Now Ehud(CN) had made a double-edged sword about a cubit[g] long, which he strapped to his right thigh under his clothing. 17 He presented the tribute(CO) to Eglon king of Moab, who was a very fat man.(CP) 18 After Ehud had presented the tribute, he sent on their way those who had carried it. 19 But on reaching the stone images near Gilgal he himself went back to Eglon and said, “Your Majesty, I have a secret message for you.”

The king said to his attendants, “Leave us!” And they all left.

20 Ehud then approached him while he was sitting alone in the upper room of his palace[h](CQ) and said, “I have a message from God for you.” As the king rose(CR) from his seat, 21 Ehud reached with his left hand, drew the sword(CS) from his right thigh and plunged it into the king’s belly. 22 Even the handle sank in after the blade, and his bowels discharged. Ehud did not pull the sword out, and the fat closed in over it. 23 Then Ehud went out to the porch[i]; he shut the doors of the upper room behind him and locked them.

24 After he had gone, the servants came and found the doors of the upper room locked. They said, “He must be relieving himself(CT) in the inner room of the palace.” 25 They waited to the point of embarrassment,(CU) but when he did not open the doors of the room, they took a key and unlocked them. There they saw their lord fallen to the floor, dead.

26 While they waited, Ehud got away. He passed by the stone images and escaped to Seirah. 27 When he arrived there, he blew a trumpet(CV) in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went down with him from the hills, with him leading them.

28 “Follow me,” he ordered, “for the Lord has given Moab,(CW) your enemy, into your hands.(CX)” So they followed him down and took possession of the fords of the Jordan(CY) that led to Moab; they allowed no one to cross over. 29 At that time they struck down about ten thousand Moabites, all vigorous and strong; not one escaped. 30 That day Moab(CZ) was made subject to Israel, and the land had peace(DA) for eighty years.

Shamgar

31 After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath,(DB) who struck down six hundred(DC) Philistines(DD) with an oxgoad. He too saved Israel.

Deborah

Again the Israelites did evil(DE) in the eyes of the Lord,(DF) now that Ehud(DG) was dead. So the Lord sold them(DH) into the hands of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor.(DI) Sisera,(DJ) the commander of his army, was based in Harosheth Haggoyim. Because he had nine hundred chariots fitted with iron(DK) and had cruelly oppressed(DL) the Israelites for twenty years, they cried to the Lord for help.

Now Deborah,(DM) a prophet,(DN) the wife of Lappidoth, was leading[j] Israel at that time. She held court(DO) under the Palm of Deborah between Ramah(DP) and Bethel(DQ) in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went up to her to have their disputes decided. She sent for Barak son of Abinoam(DR) from Kedesh(DS) in Naphtali and said to him, “The Lord, the God of Israel, commands you: ‘Go, take with you ten thousand men of Naphtali(DT) and Zebulun(DU) and lead them up to Mount Tabor.(DV) I will lead Sisera, the commander of Jabin’s(DW) army, with his chariots and his troops to the Kishon River(DX) and give him into your hands.(DY)’”

Barak said to her, “If you go with me, I will go; but if you don’t go with me, I won’t go.”

“Certainly I will go with you,” said Deborah. “But because of the course you are taking, the honor will not be yours, for the Lord will deliver Sisera into the hands of a woman.” So Deborah went with Barak to Kedesh.(DZ) 10 There Barak summoned(EA) Zebulun and Naphtali, and ten thousand men went up under his command. Deborah also went up with him.

11 Now Heber the Kenite had left the other Kenites,(EB) the descendants of Hobab,(EC) Moses’ brother-in-law,[k] and pitched his tent by the great tree(ED) in Zaanannim(EE) near Kedesh.

12 When they told Sisera that Barak son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor,(EF) 13 Sisera summoned from Harosheth Haggoyim to the Kishon River(EG) all his men and his nine hundred chariots fitted with iron.(EH)

14 Then Deborah said to Barak, “Go! This is the day the Lord has given Sisera into your hands.(EI) Has not the Lord gone ahead(EJ) of you?” So Barak went down Mount Tabor, with ten thousand men following him. 15 At Barak’s advance, the Lord routed(EK) Sisera and all his chariots and army by the sword, and Sisera got down from his chariot and fled on foot.

16 Barak pursued the chariots and army as far as Harosheth Haggoyim, and all Sisera’s troops fell by the sword; not a man was left.(EL) 17 Sisera, meanwhile, fled on foot to the tent of Jael,(EM) the wife of Heber the Kenite,(EN) because there was an alliance between Jabin king of Hazor(EO) and the family of Heber the Kenite.

18 Jael(EP) went out to meet Sisera and said to him, “Come, my lord, come right in. Don’t be afraid.” So he entered her tent, and she covered him with a blanket.

19 “I’m thirsty,” he said. “Please give me some water.” She opened a skin of milk,(EQ) gave him a drink, and covered him up.

20 “Stand in the doorway of the tent,” he told her. “If someone comes by and asks you, ‘Is anyone in there?’ say ‘No.’”

21 But Jael,(ER) Heber’s wife, picked up a tent peg and a hammer and went quietly to him while he lay fast asleep,(ES) exhausted. She drove the peg through his temple into the ground, and he died.(ET)

22 Just then Barak came by in pursuit of Sisera, and Jael(EU) went out to meet him. “Come,” she said, “I will show you the man you’re looking for.” So he went in with her, and there lay Sisera with the tent peg through his temple—dead.(EV)

23 On that day God subdued(EW) Jabin(EX) king of Canaan before the Israelites. 24 And the hand of the Israelites pressed harder and harder against Jabin king of Canaan until they destroyed him.(EY)
