Salt and Light

¹³ “You are the salt of the earth, ^(A)but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.

^14 (B)“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. ^15 (C)Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. ¹⁶ In the same way, let your light shine before others, so ^(D)that^[a] they may see your good works and ^(E)give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

A Lamp Under a Basket

^21 (A)And he said to them, ^(B)“Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket, or under a bed, and not on a stand? ^22 (C)For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret except to come to light.

^50 (A)Salt is good, ^(B)but if the salt has lost its saltiness, how will you make it salty again? ^(C)Have salt in yourselves, and ^(D)be at peace with one another.”

A Lamp Under a Jar

^16 (A)(B)“No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. ^17 (C)For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light.

Salt Without Taste Is Worthless

^34 (A)“Salt is good, ^(B)but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? ³⁵ It is of no use either for the soil or for the manure pile. It is thrown away. ^(C)He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
