3 Ac yn y dyddiau hynny y daeth Ioan Fedyddiwr, gan bregethu yn niffeithwch Jwdea, 2 A dywedyd, Edifarhewch: canys nesaodd teyrnas nefoedd. 3 Oblegid hwn yw efe yr hwn y dywedwyd amdano gan Eseias y proffwyd, gan ddywedyd, Llef un yn llefain yn y diffeithwch, Paratowch ffordd yr Arglwydd; gwnewch yn union ei lwybrau ef. 4 A’r Ioan hwnnw oedd â’i ddillad o flew camel, a gwregys o groen ynghylch ei lwynau: a’i fwyd oedd locustiaid a mêl gwyllt. 5 Yna yr aeth allan ato ef Jerwsalem, a holl Jwdea, a’r holl wlad o amgylch yr Iorddonen: 6 A hwy a fedyddiwyd ganddo ef yn yr Iorddonen, gan gyffesu eu pechodau.
7 A phan welodd efe lawer o’r Phariseaid ac o’r Sadwceaid yn dyfod i’w fedydd ef, efe a ddywedodd wrthynt hwy, O genhedlaeth gwiberod, pwy a’ch rhagrybuddiodd i ffoi rhag y llid a fydd? 8 Dygwch gan hynny ffrwythau addas i edifeirwch. 9 Ac na feddyliwch ddywedyd ynoch eich hunain, Y mae gennym ni Abraham yn dad i ni: canys yr ydwyf yn dywedyd i chwi, y dichon Duw, ie, o’r meini hyn, gyfodi plant i Abraham. 10 Ac yr awr hon hefyd y mae’r fwyell wedi ei gosod ar wreiddyn y prennau: pob pren gan hynny yr hwn nid yw yn dwyn ffrwyth da, a dorrir i lawr, ac a deflir yn tân. 11 Myfi yn ddiau ydwyf yn eich bedyddio chwi â dwfr i edifeirwch: eithr yr hwn sydd yn dyfod ar fy ôl i, sydd gryfach na myfi, yr hwn nid ydwyf deilwng i ddwyn ei esgidiau: efe a’ch bedyddia chwi â’r Ysbryd Glân, ac â thân. 12 Yr hwn y mae ei wyntyll yn ei law, ac efe a lwyr lanha ei lawr dyrnu, ac a gasgl ei wenith i’w ysgubor; eithr yr us a lysg efe â thân anniffoddadwy.
13 Yna y daeth yr Iesu o Galilea i’r Iorddonen at Ioan, i’w fedyddio ganddo. 14 Eithr Ioan a warafunodd iddo ef, gan ddywedyd, Y mae arnaf fi eisiau fy medyddio gennyt ti, ac a ddeui di ataf fi? 15 Ond yr Iesu a atebodd ac a ddywedodd wrtho ef, Gad yr awr hon; canys fel hyn y mae’n weddus inni gyflawni pob cyfiawnder. Yna efe a adawodd iddo. 16 A’r Iesu, wedi ei fedyddio, a aeth yn y fan i fyny o’r dwfr: ac wele, y nefoedd a agorwyd iddo, ac efe a welodd Ysbryd Duw yn disgyn fel colomen, ac yn dyfod arno ef. 17 Ac wele lef o’r nefoedd, yn dywedyd, Hwn yw fy annwyl Fab, yn yr hwn y’m bodlonwyd.

3 Now in those days Yochanan of the tevilah of teshuva appears, preaching, crying out as a maggid (preacher) [for the Moshiach] in the midbar (wilderness) of Yehudah,
2 saying, Make teshuva, for the Malchut HaShomayim has come near.
3 For this [Yochanan] is the one spoken of through Yeshayah the Navi, saying, KOL KOREY BAMIDBAR (A voice of one shouting in the wilderness, Isa 40:3): Prepare the Derech Hashem (the way of the L-rd). Make his paths straight!
4 Now Yochanan himself had camel-hair clothing and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was arbe (locusts) and devash (wild honey).
5 Then all Yerushalayim and all Yehudah and the whole region of the Yarden were going out to him.
6 Making vidduy (confession of sin) [to Hashem] of their averos (sins), they were submitted to a tevilah (immersion) by him, using the Yarden River as a mikveh mayim (gathering of water).
7 But when he saw many of the Perushim and Tzedukim coming to where he was using the Yarden as a mikveh mayim, Yochanan said to them, You banim (sons) of nachashim (snakes)! Who warned you to flee from the charon af [Hashem] habah (the coming burning wrath of Hashem)?
8 Produce pri tov l’teshuva (fruit worthy of repentance)!
9 Do not presume to say to yourselves, We have the yichus (proud lineage), we have the zechut Avot (merit of the Fathers) of Avraham Avinu (our father Abraham). For I say to you that Hashem is able to raise up from these avanim (stones) banim (sons) of Avraham.
10 And already the ax is laid at the shoresh haetzim (the root of the trees); therefore, every etz not producing pri tov (good fruit) is cut down and thrown into the eish (fire).
11 I give you a tevilah (immersion) in a mikveh mayim for teshuva, but Hu Habah (He who Comes; T.N. i.e., the Moshiach) after me has more chozek (strength) than me. I am not worthy to remove his sandals. He will give you a tevilah (immersion) with the Ruach Hakodesh and eish (fire).
12 The winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear out his threshing floor, and he will gather his wheat into the storehouse; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable eish (fire).
13 Then Yehoshua comes from the Galil to the Yarden to Yochanan, to submit to Yochanan’s tevilah.
14 But Yochanan would have deterred him, saying, I have need to submit to your tevilah [T.N. i.e., Moshiach’s tevilah], and yet you come to me?
15 But answering him, Yehoshua said, Permit it now, for thus it is proper to fulfill all Tzidkat Hashem [Dan 9:24].
16 And having received the tevilah in the Yarden’s mikveh mayim, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach immediately came up. And, hinei! The Shomayim were opened to him, and he saw the Ruach Hakodesh of Hashem descending like a yonah (dove) and coming upon him.
17 And, hinei, a bat kol (a voice from heaven) came out of Shomayim, saying, ZEH BNI AHUVI ASHER BO CHAFATZTI (This is my Son, the beloved, with whom I am well pleased).

John the Baptist Makes the Way Ready for Jesus (A)
3 In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the desert in the country of Judea. 2 He said, “Be sorry for your sins and turn from them! The holy nation of heaven is near.” 3 The early preacher Isaiah spoke of this man. He said, “Listen! His voice calls out in the desert! ‘Make the way ready for the Lord. Make the road straight for Him!’” (B)
4 John wore clothes made of hair from camels. He had a leather belt around him. His food was locusts and wild honey.
5 Then the people of Jerusalem and of all the country of Judea and those from near the Jordan River went to him. 6 Those who told of their sins were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 7 He saw many proud religious law-keepers and other people of the religious group who believe no one will be raised from the dead. They were coming to him to be baptized. He said to them, “You family of snakes! Who told you how to keep from God’s anger that is coming? 8 Do something to show me that your hearts are changed. 9 Do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God can make children for Abraham out of these stones.
10 “Even now the ax is on the root of the trees. Every tree that does not give good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 11 For sure, I baptize with water those who are sorry for their sins and turn from them. The One Who comes after me will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. He is greater than I. I am not good enough to take off His shoes. 12 He comes ready to clean the grain. He will gather the grain in and clean it all. The clean grain He will put into a building. He will burn that which is no good with a fire that cannot be put out.”
The Baptism of Jesus (C)
13 Jesus came from Galilee. He went to John at the Jordan River to be baptized by him. 14 John tried to stop Him. He said, “I need to be baptized by You. Do You come to me?” 15 Jesus said to him, “Let it be done now. We should do what is right.” John agreed and baptized Jesus. 16 When Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens opened. He saw the Spirit of God coming down and resting on Jesus like a dove. 17 A voice was heard from heaven. It said, “This is My much-loved Son. I am very happy with Him.”
