26 Then God said, (A)“Let us make man[a] in our image, (B)after our likeness. And (C)let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

27 So God created man in his own image,

(D)male and female he created them.

21 And when the Lord smelled (A)the pleasing aroma, the Lord said in his heart, “I will never again (B)curse[a] the ground because of man, for (C)the intention of man's heart is evil from his youth. (D)Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done. 22 (E)While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, (F)day and night, shall not cease.”

And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, (G)“Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. (H)The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth and upon every bird of the heavens, upon everything that creeps on the ground and all the fish of the sea. Into your hand they are delivered. (I)Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And (J)as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything. But you shall not eat flesh with its (K)life, that is, its blood. And for your lifeblood I will require a reckoning: (L)from every beast I will require it and (M)from man. From his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man.

(N)“Whoever sheds the blood of man,

Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, “Behold, (P)I establish my covenant with you and your offspring after you, 10 and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the livestock, and every beast of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark; it is for every beast of the earth. 11 (Q)I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” 12 And God said, (R)“This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13 I have set (S)my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15 (T)I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. Abraham and the Covenant of Circumcision

17 When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty;[a] walk before me, and be (A)blameless, that I may make my covenant between me and you, and (B)may multiply you greatly.” Then Abram (C)fell on his face. And God said to him, “Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be (D)the father of a multitude of nations. No longer shall your name be called Abram,[b] but (E)your name shall be Abraham,[c] (F)for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make (G)you into nations, and (H)kings shall come from you. And I will (I)establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, (J)to be God to you and to your offspring after you. And (K)I will give to you and to your offspring after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and (L)I will be their God.”

And God said to Abraham, “As for you, you shall keep my covenant, you and your offspring after you throughout their generations. 10 This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your offspring after you: Every male among you shall be circumcised. 11 You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a (M)sign of the covenant between me and you. 12 He who is (N)eight days old among you shall be circumcised. Every male throughout your generations, whether born in your house or (O)bought with your money from any foreigner who is not of your offspring, 13 both he who is born in your house and he who is bought with your money, shall surely be circumcised. So shall my covenant be in your flesh an everlasting covenant. 14 Any uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin shall be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant.”

Israel at Mount Sinai

19 On the third new moon after the people of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on that day they (A)came into the wilderness of Sinai. They set out from (B)Rephidim and came into the wilderness of Sinai, and they encamped in the wilderness. There Israel encamped before (C)the mountain, while (D)Moses went up to God. (E)The Lord called to him out of the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel: (F)‘You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how (G)I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be (H)my treasured possession among all peoples, for (I)all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a (J)kingdom of priests and (K)a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”

So Moses came and called the elders of the people and set before them all these words that the Lord had commanded him. (L)All the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do.” And Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord. And the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I am coming to you (M)in a thick cloud, that (N)the people may hear when I speak with you, and may also (O)believe you forever.”

When Moses told the words of the people to the Lord, 10 the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and (P)consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them (Q)wash their garments 11 and be ready for the third day. For on the third day (R)the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12 And you shall set limits for the people all around, saying, ‘Take care not to go up into the mountain or touch the edge of it. (S)Whoever touches the mountain shall be put to death. 13 No hand shall touch him, but he shall be stoned or shot;[a] whether beast or man, he shall not live.’ When (T)the trumpet sounds a long blast, they shall come up to the mountain.” 14 So Moses (U)went down from the mountain to the people and (V)consecrated the people; (W)and they washed their garments. 15 And he said to the people, “Be ready for the (X)third day; (Y)do not go near a woman.”

16 On the morning of the (Z)third day there were (AA)thunders and lightnings and (AB)a thick cloud on the mountain and a very loud (AC)trumpet blast, so that all the people in the camp (AD)trembled. 17 Then (AE)Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they took their stand at the foot of the mountain. 18 Now (AF)Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because the Lord had descended on it in fire. The smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln, and (AG)the whole mountain trembled greatly. 19 And as the (AH)sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and (AI)God answered him in thunder. 20 The Lord came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain. And the Lord called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.

21 And the Lord said to Moses, “Go down and warn the people, lest they break through to the Lord (AJ)to look and many of them perish. 22 Also let the priests who come near to the Lord (AK)consecrate themselves, lest the Lord (AL)break out against them.” 23 And Moses said to the Lord, “The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai, for you yourself warned us, saying, (AM)‘Set limits around the mountain and consecrate it.’” 24 And the Lord said to him, “Go down, and come up bringing Aaron with you. But do not let the priests and the people (AN)break through to come up to the Lord, lest he break out against them.” 25 So Moses went down to the people and told them.

The Ten Commandments

20 (AO)And (AP)God spoke all these words, saying,

(AQ)“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

(AR)“You shall have no other gods before[b] me.

(AS)“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. (AT)You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am (AU)a jealous God, (AV)visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands[c] of those who love me and keep my commandments.

(AW)“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

(AX)“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. (AY)Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the (AZ)seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the (BA)sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For (BB)in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

12 (BC)“Honor your father and your mother, (BD)that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

13 (BE)“You shall not murder.[d]

14 (BF)“You shall not commit adultery.

15 (BG)“You shall not steal.

16 (BH)“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

17 (BI)“You shall not covet (BJ)your neighbor's house; (BK)you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.”

18 Now when all the people saw (BL)the thunder and the flashes of lightning and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking, the people were afraid[e] and trembled, and they stood far off 19 and said to Moses, (BM)“You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die.” 20 (BN)Moses said to the people, “Do not fear, for God has come to (BO)test you, that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin.”

The Lord's Covenant with David

(A)Now when the king lived in his house and the Lord (B)had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, the king said to (C)Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell (D)in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells (E)in a tent.” And Nathan said to the king, (F)“Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you.”

But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: (G)Would you build me a house to dwell in? I have not lived in a house (H)since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about (I)in a tent for my dwelling. In all places where (J)I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with (K)any of the judges[a] of Israel, whom I commanded (L)to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’ Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, (M)I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince[b] over my people Israel. (N)And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel (O)and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place (P)and be disturbed no more. (Q)And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, 11 (R)from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And (S)I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that (T)the Lord will make you a house. 12 (U)When your days are fulfilled and (V)you lie down with your fathers, (W)I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 (X)He shall build a house for my name, and (Y)I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 (Z)I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, (AA)I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, 15 (AB)but my steadfast love will not depart from him, (AC)as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. 16 (AD)And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me.[c] (AE)Your throne shall be established forever.’”

The New Covenant

31 (A)“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make (B)a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when (C)I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, (D)though I was their husband, declares the Lord. 33 (E)For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: (F)I will put my law within them, and I will write it (G)on their hearts. (H)And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ (I)for they shall all know me, (J)from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For (K)I will forgive their iniquity, and (L)I will remember their sin no more.”

The Lord's Concern for His Holy Name

16 The word of the Lord came to me: 17 (A)“Son of man, when the house of Israel lived in their own land, (B)they defiled it by their ways and their deeds. Their ways before me were (C)like the uncleanness of a woman in her menstrual impurity. 18 So (D)I poured out my wrath upon them (E)for the blood that they had shed in the land, for the idols (F)with which they had defiled it. 19 (G)I scattered them among the nations, and they were dispersed through the countries. (H)In accordance with their ways and their deeds I judged them. 20 But when they came to the nations, wherever they came, (I)they profaned my holy name, in that people said of them, ‘These are the people of the Lord, and yet they had to go out of his land.’ 21 But I had concern (J)for my holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations to which they came.

I Will Put My Spirit Within You

22 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: (K)It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, (L)which you have profaned among the nations to which you came. 23 (M)And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. (N)And the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Lord God, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes. 24 (O)I will take you (P)from the nations and gather you from all the countries and (Q)bring you into your own land. 25 (R)I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from (S)all your uncleannesses, and (T)from all your idols (U)I will cleanse you. 26 And I will give you (V)a new heart, and (W)a new spirit I will put within you. (X)And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 (Y)And I will put my Spirit within you, (Z)and cause you to walk in my statutes and (AA)be careful to obey my rules.[a] 28 (AB)You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and (AC)you shall be my people, and I will be your God. 29 And (AD)I will deliver you from all your uncleannesses. And (AE)I will summon the grain and make it abundant and (AF)lay no famine upon you. 30 (AG)I will make the fruit of the tree and the increase of the field abundant, (AH)that you may never again suffer the disgrace of famine among the nations. 31 Then (AI)you will remember your evil ways, and your deeds that were not good, and you will loathe yourselves for your iniquities and your abominations. 32 (AJ)It is not for your sake that I will act, declares the Lord God; let that be known to you. Be ashamed and confounded for your ways, O house of Israel.

33 “Thus says the Lord God: On the day that (AK)I cleanse you from all your iniquities, (AL)I will cause the cities to be inhabited, and the waste places shall be rebuilt. 34 And the land that was desolate shall be tilled, instead of being the desolation that it was in the sight of all who passed by. 35 And they will say, ‘This land that was desolate has become like (AM)the garden of Eden, and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are now fortified and inhabited.’ 36 Then (AN)the nations that are left all around you shall know that I am the Lord; I have rebuilt the ruined places and (AO)replanted that which was desolate. (AP)I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it.

37 “Thus says the Lord God: This also (AQ)I will let the house of Israel ask me to do for them: (AR)to increase their people like (AS)a flock. 38 Like the flock for sacrifices,[b] (AT)like the flock at Jerusalem during her appointed feasts, so (AU)shall the waste cities be filled with flocks of people. (AV)Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

The New Heaven and the New Earth

21 Then I saw (A)a new heaven and a new earth, for (B)the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw (C)the holy city, (D)new Jerusalem, (E)coming down out of heaven from God, (F)prepared (G)as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, (H)the dwelling place[a] of God is with man. He will (I)dwell with them, and they will be his people,[b] and God himself will be with them as their God.[c] (J)He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and (K)death shall be no more, (L)neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

And (M)he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I (N)am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for (O)these words are trustworthy and true.” And he said to me, (P)“It is done! (Q)I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. (R)To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. (S)The one who conquers will have this heritage, and (T)I will be his God and (U)he will be my son. (V)But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, (W)their portion will be in (X)the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is (Y)the second death.”

The New Jerusalem

Then came (Z)one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of (AA)the seven last plagues and spoke to me, saying, “Come, I will show you (AB)the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” 10 And (AC)he carried me away in the Spirit to (AD)a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, 11 (AE)having the glory of God, (AF)its radiance (AG)like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. 12 It had a great, high wall, (AH)with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed— 13 on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. 14 And the wall of the city had twelve (AI)foundations, and (AJ)on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

15 And the one who spoke with me (AK)had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city and its gates and walls. 16 The city lies foursquare, its length the same as its width. And he measured the city with his rod, 12,000 stadia.[d] Its length and width and height are equal. 17 He also measured its wall, 144 cubits[e] by (AL)human measurement, which is also (AM)an angel's measurement. 18 The wall was built of (AN)jasper, while the city was pure gold, like (AO)clear glass. 19 (AP)The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of jewel. The first was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst. 21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and (AQ)the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

22 And (AR)I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. 23 And the city (AS)has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for (AT)the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 By its light (AU)will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth (AV)will bring their glory into it, 25 and (AW)its gates will never be shut by day—and (AX)there will be no night there. 26 They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. 27 But (AY)nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's (AZ)book of life.

The River of Life

22 Then the angel[f] showed me (BA)the river of (BB)the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of (BC)the street of the city; (BD)also, on either side of the river, (BE)the tree of life[g] with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were (BF)for the healing of the nations. (BG)No longer will there be anything accursed, but (BH)the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and (BI)his servants will worship him. (BJ)They will see his face, and (BK)his name will be on their foreheads. And (BL)night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp (BM)or sun, for (BN)the Lord God will be their light, and (BO)they will reign forever and ever.
