27 When it was morning, the chief priests and Jewish leaders met again to discuss how to induce the Roman government to sentence Jesus to death.[a] 2 Then they sent him in chains to Pilate, the Roman governor.
3 About that time Judas, who betrayed him, when he saw that Jesus had been condemned to die, changed his mind and deeply regretted what he had done,[b] and brought back the money to the chief priests and other Jewish leaders.
4 “I have sinned,” he declared, “for I have betrayed an innocent man.”
“That’s your problem,” they retorted.
5 Then he threw the money onto the floor of the Temple and went out and hanged himself. 6 The chief priests picked the money up. “We can’t put it in the collection,” they said, “since it’s against our laws to accept money paid for murder.”
7 They talked it over and finally decided to buy a certain field where the clay was used by potters, and to make it into a cemetery for foreigners who died in Jerusalem. 8 That is why the cemetery is still called “The Field of Blood.”
9 This fulfilled the prophecy of Jeremiah which says,
“They took the thirty pieces of silver—the price at which he was valued by the people of Israel— 10 and purchased a field from the potters as the Lord directed me.”
11 Now Jesus was standing before Pilate, the Roman governor. “Are you the Jews’ Messiah?”[c] the governor asked him.
“Yes,” Jesus replied.
12 But when the chief priests and other Jewish leaders made their many accusations against him, Jesus remained silent.
13 “Don’t you hear what they are saying?” Pilate demanded.
14 But Jesus said nothing, much to the governor’s surprise.
15 Now the governor’s custom was to release one Jewish prisoner each year during the Passover celebration—anyone they wanted. 16 This year there was a particularly notorious criminal in jail named Barabbas, 17 and as the crowds gathered before Pilate’s house that morning he asked them, “Which shall I release to you—Barabbas, or Jesus your Messiah?”[d] 18 For he knew very well that the Jewish leaders had arrested Jesus out of envy because of his popularity with the people.
19 Just then, as he was presiding over the court, Pilate’s wife sent him this message: “Leave that good man alone; for I had a terrible nightmare concerning him last night.”
20 Meanwhile the chief priests and Jewish officials persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas’s release, and for Jesus’ death. 21 So when the governor asked again,[e] “Which of these two shall I release to you?” the crowd shouted back their reply: “Barabbas!”
22 “Then what shall I do with Jesus, your Messiah?” Pilate asked.
And they shouted, “Crucify him!”
23 “Why?” Pilate demanded. “What has he done wrong?” But they kept shouting, “Crucify! Crucify!”
24 When Pilate saw that he wasn’t getting anywhere and that a riot was developing, he sent for a bowl of water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this good man. The responsibility is yours!”
25 And the mob yelled back, “His blood be on us and on our children!”
26 Then Pilate released Barabbas to them. And after he had whipped Jesus, he gave him to the Roman soldiers to be taken away and crucified. 27 But first they took him into the armory and called out the entire contingent. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and made a crown from long thorns and put it on his head, and placed a stick in his right hand as a scepter and knelt before him in mockery. “Hail, King of the Jews,” they yelled. 30 And they spat on him and grabbed the stick and beat him on the head with it.
31 After the mockery, they took off the robe and put his own garment on him again, and took him out to crucify him.
32 As they were on the way to the execution grounds they came across a man from Cyrene, in Africa—Simon was his name—and forced him to carry Jesus’ cross. 33 Then they went out to an area known as Golgotha, that is, “Skull Hill,” 34 where the soldiers gave him drugged wine to drink; but when he had tasted it, he refused.
35 After the crucifixion, the soldiers threw dice to divide up his clothes among themselves. 36 Then they sat around and watched him as he hung there. 37 And they put a sign above his head, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.”
38 Two robbers were also crucified there that morning, one on either side of him. 39 And the people passing by hurled abuse, shaking their heads at him and saying, 40 “So! You can destroy the Temple and build it again in three days, can you? Well, then, come on down from the cross if you are the Son of God!”
41-43 And the chief priests and Jewish leaders also mocked him. “He saved others,” they scoffed, “but he can’t save himself! So you are the King of Israel, are you? Come down from the cross and we’ll believe you! He trusted God—let God show his approval by delivering him! Didn’t he say, ‘I am God’s Son’?”
44 And the robbers also threw the same in his teeth.
45 That afternoon, the whole earth[f] was covered with darkness for three hours, from noon until three o’clock.
46 About three o’clock, Jesus shouted, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
47 Some of the bystanders misunderstood and thought he was calling for Elijah. 48 One of them ran and filled a sponge with sour wine and put it on a stick and held it up to him to drink. 49 But the rest said, “Leave him alone. Let’s see whether Elijah will come and save him.”
50 Then Jesus shouted out again, dismissed his spirit, and died.
51 And look! The curtain secluding the Holiest Place[g] in the Temple was split apart from top to bottom; and the earth shook, and rocks broke, 52 and tombs opened, and many godly men and women who had died came back to life again. 53 After Jesus’ resurrection, they left the cemetery and went into Jerusalem, and appeared to many people there.
54 The soldiers at the crucifixion and their sergeant were terribly frightened by the earthquake and all that happened. They exclaimed, “Surely this was God’s Son.”[h]
55 And many women who had come down from Galilee with Jesus to care for him were watching from a distance. 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of James and John (the sons of Zebedee).
57 When evening came, a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, one of Jesus’ followers, 58 went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. And Pilate issued an order to release it to him. 59 Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and placed it in his own new rock-hewn tomb, and rolled a great stone across the entrance as he left. 61 Both Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting nearby watching.
62 The next day—at the close of the first day of the Passover ceremonies[i]—the chief priests and Pharisees went to Pilate, 63 and told him, “Sir, that liar once said, ‘After three days I will come back to life again.’ 64 So we request an order from you sealing the tomb until the third day, to prevent his disciples from coming and stealing his body and then telling everyone he came back to life! If that happens, we’ll be worse off than we were at first.”
65 “Use your own Temple police,” Pilate told them. “They can guard it safely enough.”
66 So they sealed the stone[j] and posted guards to protect it from intrusion.

13 Nang magkagayo'y sinabi sa kaniya ni Pilato, Hindi mo baga naririnig kung gaano karaming bagay ang kanilang sinasaksihang laban sa iyo?
14 At hindi siya sinagot niya, ng kahit isang salita man lamang: ano pa't nanggilalas na mainam ang gobernador.
15 Sa kapistahan nga ay pinagkaugalian ng gobernador na pawalan sa karamihan ang isang bilanggo, na sinoman ang kanilang ibigin.
16 At noo'y sila'y may isang bilanggong bantog, na tinatawag na Barrabas.
17 Nang sila'y mangagkatipon nga, ay sinabi sa kanila ni Pilato, Sino ang ibig ninyong sa inyo'y aking pawalan? si Barrabas, o si Jesus na tinatawag na Cristo?
18 Sapagka't natatalastas niya na dahil sa kapanaghilian ay ibinigay siya nila sa kaniya.
19 At samantalang nakaupo siya sa luklukan ng pagkahukom, ay nagsugo sa kaniya ang kaniyang asawa, na nagsasabi, Huwag kang makialam sa matuwid na taong iyan; sapagka't ngayong araw na ito'y naghirap ako ng maraming bagay sa panaginip dahil sa kaniya.
20 Inudyukan ng mga pangulong saserdote at ng matatanda ang mga karamihan na hingin nila si Barrabas, at puksain si Jesus.
21 Datapuwa't sumagot ang gobernador at sa kanila'y sinabi, Alin sa dalawa ang ibig ninyong sa inyo'y aking pawalan? At sinabi nila, Si Barrabas.
22 Sinabi sa kanila ni Pilato, Ano ang gagawin kay Jesus na tinatawag na Cristo? Sinabi nilang lahat, Mapako siya sa krus.
23 At sinabi niya, Bakit, anong kasamaan ang kaniyang ginawa? Datapuwa't sila'y lalong nangagsigawan, na nangagsasabi, Mapako siya sa krus.
24 Kaya't nang makita ni Pilato na wala siyang magawa, kundi bagkus pa ngang lumalala ang kaguluhan, siya'y kumuha ng tubig, at naghugas ng kaniyang mga kamay sa harap ng karamihan, na sinasabi, Wala akong kasalanan sa dugo nitong matuwid na tao; kayo ang bahala niyan.
25 At sumagot ang buong bayan at nagsabi, Mapasa amin ang kaniyang dugo, at sa aming mga anak.
26 Nang magkagayo'y pinawalan niya sa kanila si Barrabas; nguni't si Jesus ay hinampas at ibinigay upang ipako sa krus.
27 Nang magkagayo'y dinala si Jesus ng mga kawal ng gobernador sa Pretorio, at nagkatipon sa kaniya ang buong pulutong.
28 At siya'y kanilang hinubdan, at dinamtan siya ng isang balabal na kulay-ube.
29 At sila'y nangagkamakama ng isang putong na tinik, at ipinutong sa kaniyang ulo, at inilagay sa kanang kamay niya ang isang tambo; at sila'y nagsiluhod sa harap niya at siya'y kanilang nilibak, na nagsisipagsabi, Magalak, Hari ng mga Judio!
30 At siya'y kanilang niluluraan, at kinuha nila ang tambo at sinaktan siya sa ulo.
31 At nang siya'y kanilang malibak, ay hinubdan nila siya ng balabal, at isinuot sa kaniya ang kaniyang mga damit, at kanilang inilabas siya upang ipako sa krus.
32 At paglabas nila'y kanilang nasalubong ang isang taong taga Cirene, na ang pangala'y Simon: ito'y kanilang pinilit na sumama sa kanila, upang pasanin niya ang kaniyang krus.
33 At nang sila'y magsirating sa isang dakong tinatawag na Golgota, sa makatuwid baga'y, Ang dako ng bungo,
34 Ay pinainom nila siya ng alak na may kahalong apdo: at nang kaniyang matikman, ay ayaw niyang inumin.
35 At nang siya'y kanilang maipako sa krus ay kanilang binahagi ang kaniyang mga damit, na kanilang pinagsapalaran;
36 At sila'y nangagsiupo at binantayan siya roon.
37 At inilagay nila sa kaniyang ulunan ang pamagat sa kaniya, na nasusulat: ITO'Y SI JESUS, ANG HARI NG MGA JUDIO.
38 Nang magkagayo'y ipinakong kasama niya ang dalawang tulisan, isa sa kanan at isa sa kaliwa.
39 At siya'y nililibak ng nangagdaraan, na iginagalaw ang kanilang mga ulo,
40 At nangagsasabi, Ikaw na igigiba mo ang templo, at sa tatlong araw ay iyong itatayo, iyong iligtas ang sarili mo: kung ikaw ay Anak ng Dios, ay bumaba ka sa krus.
41 Gayon din naman ang paglibak sa kaniya ng mga pangulong saserdote, pati ng mga eskriba at ng matatanda, na nagsipagsabi,
42 Nagligtas siya sa mga iba; sa kaniyang sarili ay hindi makapagligtas. Siya ang Hari ng Israel; bumaba siya ngayon sa krus, at tayo'y magsisisampalataya sa kaniya.
43 Nananalig siya sa Dios; iligtas niya siya ngayon, kung siya'y iniibig: sapagka't sinabi niya, Ako'y Anak ng Dios.
44 At minumura din naman siya ng mga tulisang kasama niyang nangapapako sa krus.
45 Mula nga nang oras na ikaanim ay nagdilim sa ibabaw ng buong sangkalupaan hanggang sa oras na ikasiyam.
46 At nang malapit na ang oras na ikasiyam ay sumigaw si Jesus ng malakas na tinig, na sinasabi: Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? sa makatuwid baga'y, Dios ko, Dios ko bakit mo ako pinabayaan?
47 At nang marinig ito ng ilan sa nangakatayo roon, ay sinabi, Tinatawag ng taong ito si Elias.
48 At pagkaraka'y tumakbo ang isa sa kanila, at kumuha ng isang espongha, at binasa ng suka, saka inilagay sa isang tambo, at ipinainom sa kaniya.
49 At sinabi ng mga iba, Pabayaan ninyo; tingnan natin kung paririto si Elias upang siya'y iligtas.
50 At muling sumigaw si Jesus ng malakas na tinig, at nalagot ang kaniyang hininga.
51 At narito, ang tabing ng templo'y nahapak na nagkadalawa buhat sa itaas hanggang sa ibaba; at nayanig ang lupa; at nangabaak ang mga bato;
52 At nangabuksan ang mga libingan; at maraming katawan ng mga banal na nangakatulog ay nangagbangon;
53 At paglabas sa mga libingan pagkatapos na siya'y mabuhay na maguli ay nagsipasok sila sa bayang banal at nangapakita sa marami.

59 At kinuha ni Jose ang bangkay at binalot niya ng isang malinis na kayong lino,
60 At inilagay sa kaniyang sariling bagong libingan, na kaniyang hinukay sa bato: at iginulong niya ang isang malaking bato sa pintuan ng libingan, at umalis.
61 At nangaroon si Maria Magdalena, at ang isang Maria, at nangakaupo sa tapat ng libingan.
62 Nang kinabukasan nga, na siyang araw pagkatapos ng Paghahanda, ay nangagkatipon kay Pilato ang mga pangulong saserdote at ang mga Fariseo,
63 Na nagsisipagsabi, Ginoo, naaalaala namin na sinabi ng magdarayang yaon nang nabubuhay pa, Pagkaraan ng tatlong araw ay magbabangon akong muli.

Jesus Is Taken to Pilate
27 Early the next morning, all the leading priests and elders of the people decided that Jesus should die. 2 They tied him, led him away, and turned him over to Pilate, the governor.
Judas Kills Himself
3 Judas, the one who had given Jesus to his enemies, saw that they had decided to kill Jesus. Then he was very sorry for what he had done. So he took the thirty silver coins back to the priests and the leaders, 4 saying, “I sinned; I handed over to you an innocent man.”
The leaders answered, “What is that to us? That’s your problem, not ours.”
5 So Judas threw the money into the Temple. Then he went off and hanged himself.
6 The leading priests picked up the silver coins in the Temple and said, “Our law does not allow us to keep this money with the Temple money, because it has paid for a man’s death.” 7 So they decided to use the coins to buy Potter’s Field as a place to bury strangers who died in Jerusalem. 8 That is why that field is still called the Field of Blood. 9 So what Jeremiah the prophet had said came true: “They took thirty silver coins. That is how little the Israelites thought he was worth. 10 They used those thirty silver coins to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”[a]
Pilate Questions Jesus
11 Jesus stood before Pilate the governor, and Pilate asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
Jesus answered, “Those are your words.”
12 When the leading priests and the elders accused Jesus, he said nothing.
13 So Pilate said to Jesus, “Don’t you hear them accusing you of all these things?”
14 But Jesus said nothing in answer to Pilate, and Pilate was very surprised at this.
Pilate Tries to Free Jesus
15 Every year at the time of Passover the governor would free one prisoner whom the people chose. 16 At that time there was a man in prison, named Barabbas,[b] who was known to be very bad. 17 When the people gathered at Pilate’s house, Pilate said, “Whom do you want me to set free: Barabbas[c] or Jesus who is called the Christ?” 18 Pilate knew that they turned Jesus in to him because they were jealous.
19 While Pilate was sitting there on the judge’s seat, his wife sent this message to him: “Don’t do anything to that man, because he is innocent. Today I had a dream about him, and it troubled me very much.”
20 But the leading priests and elders convinced the crowd to ask for Barabbas to be freed and for Jesus to be killed.
21 Pilate said, “I have Barabbas and Jesus. Which do you want me to set free for you?”
The people answered, “Barabbas.”
22 Pilate asked, “So what should I do with Jesus, the one called the Christ?”
They all answered, “Crucify him!”
23 Pilate asked, “Why? What wrong has he done?”
But they shouted louder, “Crucify him!”
24 When Pilate saw that he could do nothing about this and that a riot was starting, he took some water and washed his hands[d] in front of the crowd. Then he said, “I am not guilty of this man’s death. You are the ones who are causing it!”
25 All the people answered, “We and our children will be responsible for his death.”
26 Then he set Barabbas free. But Jesus was beaten with whips and handed over to the soldiers to be crucified.
27 The governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the governor’s palace, and they all gathered around him. 28 They took off his clothes and put a red robe on him. 29 Using thorny branches, they made a crown, put it on his head, and put a stick in his right hand. Then the soldiers bowed before Jesus and made fun of him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 They spat on Jesus. Then they took his stick and began to beat him on the head. 31 After they finished, the soldiers took off the robe and put his own clothes on him again. Then they led him away to be crucified.
Jesus Is Crucified
32 As the soldiers were going out of the city with Jesus, they forced a man from Cyrene, named Simon, to carry the cross for Jesus. 33 They all came to the place called Golgotha, which means the Place of the Skull. 34 The soldiers gave Jesus wine mixed with gall[e] to drink. He tasted the wine but refused to drink it. 35 When the soldiers had crucified him, they threw lots to decide who would get his clothes.[f] 36 The soldiers sat there and continued watching him. 37 They put a sign above Jesus’ head with a charge against him. It said: this is jesus, the king of the jews. 38 Two robbers were crucified beside Jesus, one on the right and the other on the left. 39 People walked by and insulted Jesus and shook their heads, 40 saying, “You said you could destroy the Temple and build it again in three days. So save yourself! Come down from that cross if you are really the Son of God!”
41 The leading priests, the teachers of the law, and the Jewish elders were also making fun of Jesus. 42 They said, “He saved others, but he can’t save himself! He says he is the king of Israel! If he is the king, let him come down now from the cross. Then we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God, so let God save him now, if God really wants him. He himself said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 And in the same way, the robbers who were being crucified beside Jesus also insulted him.
Jesus Dies
45 At noon the whole country became dark, and the darkness lasted for three hours. 46 About three o’clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” This means, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”
47 Some of the people standing there who heard this said, “He is calling Elijah.”
48 Quickly one of them ran and got a sponge and filled it with vinegar and tied it to a stick and gave it to Jesus to drink. 49 But the others said, “Don’t bother him. We want to see if Elijah will come to save him.”
50 But Jesus cried out again in a loud voice and died.
51 Then the curtain in the Temple[g] was torn into two pieces, from the top to the bottom. Also, the earth shook and rocks broke apart. 52 The graves opened, and many of God’s people who had died were raised from the dead. 53 They came out of the graves after Jesus was raised from the dead and went into the holy city, where they appeared to many people.
54 When the army officer and the soldiers guarding Jesus saw this earthquake and everything else that happened, they were very frightened and said, “He really was the Son of God!”
55 Many women who had followed Jesus from Galilee to help him were standing at a distance from the cross, watching. 56 Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of James and John were there.
Jesus Is Buried
57 That evening a rich man named Joseph, a follower of Jesus from the town of Arimathea, came to Jerusalem. 58 Joseph went to Pilate and asked to have Jesus’ body. So Pilate gave orders for the soldiers to give it to Joseph. 59 Then Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth. 60 He put Jesus’ body in a new tomb that he had cut out of a wall of rock, and he rolled a very large stone to block the entrance of the tomb. Then Joseph went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other woman named Mary were sitting near the tomb.
The Tomb of Jesus Is Guarded
62 The next day, the day after Preparation Day, the leading priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. 63 They said, “Sir, we remember that while that liar was still alive he said, ‘After three days I will rise from the dead.’ 64 So give the order for the tomb to be guarded closely till the third day. Otherwise, his followers might come and steal the body and tell people that he has risen from the dead. That lie would be even worse than the first one.”
65 Pilate said, “Take some soldiers and go guard the tomb the best way you know.” 66 So they all went to the tomb and made it safe from thieves by sealing the stone in the entrance and putting soldiers there to guard it.
