The Crucifixion of Jesus(A)

32 As they were going out,(B) they met a man from Cyrene,(C) named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.(D) 33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”).(E) 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall;(F) but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(G) 36 And sitting down, they kept watch(H) over him there. 37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.

38 Two rebels were crucified with him,(I) one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(J) 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(K) save yourself!(L) Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”(M) 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel!(N) Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe(O) in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him(P) now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

The Death of Jesus(Q)

45 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness(R) came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[a] lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[b](S)

47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”

48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar,(T) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”

50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.(U)

The rest of the blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar(R) of burnt offering at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 19 He shall remove all the fat(S) from it and burn it on the altar,(T) 20 and do with this bull just as he did with the bull for the sin offering. In this way the priest will make atonement(U) for the community, and they will be forgiven.(V) 21 Then he shall take the bull outside the camp(W) and burn it as he burned the first bull. Various Laws

22 If someone guilty of a capital offense(A) is put to death and their body is exposed on a pole, 23 you must not leave the body hanging on the pole overnight.(B) Be sure to bury(C) it that same day, because anyone who is hung on a pole is under God’s curse.(D) You must not desecrate(E) the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.

18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed(A) from the empty way of life(B) handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood(C) of Christ, a lamb(D) without blemish or defect.(E) 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world,(F) but was revealed in these last times(G) for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God,(H) who raised him from the dead(I) and glorified him,(J) and so your faith and hope(K) are in God.

22 Now that you have purified(L) yourselves by obeying(M) the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply,(N) from the heart.[a] 23 For you have been born again,(O) not of perishable seed, but of imperishable,(P) through the living and enduring word of God.(Q) 24 For,

“All people are like grass,
    and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;
the grass withers and the flowers fall,
25     but the word of the Lord endures forever.”[b](R)

And this is the word that was preached to you.

Therefore, rid yourselves(S) of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander(T) of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk,(U) so that by it you may grow up(V) in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.(W)

The Living Stone and a Chosen People

As you come to him, the living Stone(X)—rejected by humans but chosen by God(Y) and precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built(Z) into a spiritual house[c](AA) to be a holy priesthood,(AB) offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.(AC) For in Scripture it says:

“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
    a chosen and precious cornerstone,(AD)
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame.”[d](AE)

Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,(AF)

“The stone the builders rejected(AG)
    has become the cornerstone,”[e](AH)

and,

“A stone that causes people to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.”[f](AI)

They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.(AJ)

But you are a chosen people,(AK) a royal priesthood,(AL) a holy nation,(AM) God’s special possession,(AN) that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.(AO) 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God;(AP) once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Living Godly Lives in a Pagan Society

11 Dear friends,(AQ) I urge you, as foreigners and exiles,(AR) to abstain from sinful desires,(AS) which wage war against your soul.(AT) 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds(AU) and glorify God(AV) on the day he visits us.

13 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority:(AW) whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, 14 or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong(AX) and to commend those who do right.(AY) 15 For it is God’s will(AZ) that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.(BA) 16 Live as free people,(BB) but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil;(BC) live as God’s slaves.(BD) 17 Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers,(BE) fear God, honor the emperor.(BF)

18 Slaves, in reverent fear of God submit yourselves to your masters,(BG) not only to those who are good and considerate,(BH) but also to those who are harsh. 19 For it is commendable if someone bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because they are conscious of God.(BI) 20 But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.(BJ) 21 To this(BK) you were called,(BL) because Christ suffered for you,(BM) leaving you an example,(BN) that you should follow in his steps.

22 “He committed no sin,(BO)
and no deceit was found in his mouth.”[g](BP)

23 When they hurled their insults at him,(BQ) he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats.(BR) Instead, he entrusted himself(BS) to him who judges justly.(BT) 24 “He himself bore our sins”(BU) in his body on the cross,(BV) so that we might die to sins(BW) and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”(BX)

23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

24 “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.”

This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled(A) that said,

“They divided my clothes among them
and cast lots for my garment.”[a](B)

So this is what the soldiers did.

25 Near the cross(C) of Jesus stood his mother,(D) his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.(E) 26 When Jesus saw his mother(F) there, and the disciple whom he loved(G) standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman,[b] here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

The Death of Jesus(H)

28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished,(I) and so that Scripture would be fulfilled,(J) Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar(K) was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.”(L) With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
