²⁵ All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”^(A)

²⁸ “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,”^(A) he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.”^(B)

¹⁹ If any of them go outside your house into the street, their blood will be on their own heads;^(A) we will not be responsible. As for those who are in the house with you, their blood will be on our head^(B) if a hand is laid on them.

⁵² Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute?^(A) They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him^(B)—

¹⁰ Do this so that innocent blood^(A) will not be shed in your land, which the Lord your God is giving you as your inheritance, and so that you will not be guilty of bloodshed.^(B)

¹⁵ who killed the Lord Jesus^(A) and the prophets^(B) and also drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to everyone ¹⁶ in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles^(C) so that they may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit.^(D) The wrath of God has come upon them at last.^[a]

³⁰ And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ ³¹ So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets.^{(A) 32} Go ahead, then, and complete^(B) what your ancestors started!^(C)

³³ “You snakes! You brood of vipers!^(D) How will you escape being condemned to hell?^{(E) 34} Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify;^(F) others you will flog in your synagogues^(G) and pursue from town to town.^{(H) 35} And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel^(I) to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah,^(J) whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.^{(K) 36} Truly I tell you, all this will come on this generation.^(L)

³⁷ “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you,^(M) how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,^(N) and you were not willing.

³³ “‘Do not pollute the land where you are. Bloodshed pollutes the land,^(A) and atonement cannot be made for the land on which blood has been shed, except by the blood of the one who shed it.

²⁸ Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.^{(A) 29} How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God^(B) underfoot,^(C) who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant^(D) that sanctified them,^(E) and who has insulted the Spirit^(F) of grace?^{(G) 30} For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”^[a](H) and again, “The Lord will judge his people.”^[b](I)
