³⁹ Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup^(A) be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”^(B)

The Cup of God’s Wrath

¹⁵ This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from my hand this cup^(A) filled with the wine of my wrath and make all the nations to whom I send^(B) you drink it.

⁹ A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: “If anyone worships the beast^(A) and its image^(B) and receives its mark on their forehead^(C) or on their hand, ¹⁰ they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury,^(D) which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath.^(E) They will be tormented with burning sulfur^(F) in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb.

The Death of Jesus^(A)

²⁸ Later, knowing that everything had now been finished,^(B) and so that Scripture would be fulfilled,^(C) Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” ²⁹ A jar of wine vinegar^(D) was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.

²⁰ In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant^(A) in my blood, which is poured out for you.^[a]
