30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.(A)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(B)

31 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me,(C) for it is written:

“‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’[a](D)

32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(E)

33 Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”

34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”(F)

35 But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you,(G) I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.

Gethsemane(H)

36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee(I) along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow(J) to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”(K)

39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup(L) be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”(M)

40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me(N) for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(O) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”(P)

43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour(Q) has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Gethsemane(G)

32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John(H) along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,”(I) he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”

35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour(J) might pass from him. 36 “Abba,[c] Father,”(K) he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup(L) from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”(M)

37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(N) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”(O)

39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour(P) has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives(A)

39 Jesus went out as usual(B) to the Mount of Olives,(C) and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”(D) 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down(E) and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup(F) from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”(G) 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.(H) 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.[a]

45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”(I)

The Disciples’ Grief Will Turn to Joy

16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while(A) you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”(B)

17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’(C) and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”(D) 18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”

19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn(E) while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.(F) 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain(G) because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief,(H) but I will see you again(I) and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.(J) 23 In that day(K) you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.(L) 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive,(M) and your joy will be complete.(N)

25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively,(O) a time is coming(P) when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name.(Q) I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me(R) and have believed that I came from God.(S) 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”(T)

29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.(U) 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe(V) that you came from God.”(W)

31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming(X) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,(Y) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.(Z) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.(AA)

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.(AB) In this world you will have trouble.(AC) But take heart! I have overcome(AD) the world.”

Jesus Prays to Be Glorified

17 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven(AE) and prayed:

“Father, the hour has come.(AF) Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.(AG) For you granted him authority over all people(AH) that he might give eternal life(AI) to all those you have given him.(AJ) Now this is eternal life: that they know you,(AK) the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.(AL) I have brought you glory(AM) on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.(AN) And now, Father, glorify me(AO) in your presence with the glory I had with you(AP) before the world began.(AQ)

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

“I have revealed you[a](AR) to those whom you gave me(AS) out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. For I gave them the words you gave me(AT) and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you,(AU) and they believed that you sent me.(AV) I pray for them.(AW) I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me,(AX) for they are yours. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine.(AY) And glory has come to me through them. 11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world,(AZ) and I am coming to you.(BA) Holy Father, protect them by the power of[b] your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one(BB) as we are one.(BC) 12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by[c] that name you gave me. None has been lost(BD) except the one doomed to destruction(BE) so that Scripture would be fulfilled.(BF)

13 “I am coming to you now,(BG) but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy(BH) within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them,(BI) for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.(BJ) 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.(BK) 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.(BL) 17 Sanctify them by[d] the truth; your word is truth.(BM) 18 As you sent me into the world,(BN) I have sent them into the world.(BO) 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.(BP)

Jesus Prays for All Believers

20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one,(BQ) Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.(BR) May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.(BS) 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me,(BT) that they may be one as we are one(BU) 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me(BV) and have loved them(BW) even as you have loved me.

24 “Father, I want those you have given me(BX) to be with me where I am,(BY) and to see my glory,(BZ) the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.(CA)

25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you,(CB) I know you, and they know that you have sent me.(CC) 26 I have made you[e] known to them,(CD) and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them(CE) and that I myself may be in them.”

Jesus Arrested(CF)

18 When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley.(CG) On the other side there was a garden,(CH) and he and his disciples went into it.(CI)
