²¹ And while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”^(A)

²² They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, “Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?”

²³ Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.^{(B) 24} The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him.^(C) But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

²⁵ Then Judas, the one who would betray him,^(D) said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?”^(E)

Jesus answered, “You have said so.”

²⁶ While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it^(F) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”

²⁷ Then he took a cup,^(G) and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. ²⁸ This is my blood of the^[a] covenant,^(H) which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.^{(I) 29} I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you^(J) in my Father’s kingdom.”

³⁰ When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.^(K)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial^(L)

³¹ Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me,^(M) for it is written:

³² But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”^(O)

³³ Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”

³⁴ “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”^(P)

³⁵ But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you,^(Q) I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.

¹⁸ While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”

¹⁹ They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”

²⁰ “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.^{(A) 21} The Son of Man^(B) will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

³⁰ “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice^[c] you yourself will disown me three times.”^(K)

³¹ But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you,^(L) I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.

¹⁷ After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. ¹⁸ For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

¹⁹ And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it,^(A) and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

²⁰ In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant^(B) in my blood, which is poured out for you.^{[a] 21} But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.^{(C) 22} The Son of Man^(D) will go as it has been decreed.^(E) But woe to that man who betrays him!” ²³ They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.

²⁴ A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.^{(F) 25} Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. ²⁶ But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest,^(G) and the one who rules like the one who serves.^{(H) 27} For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.^{(I) 28} You are those who have stood by me in my trials. ²⁹ And I confer on you a kingdom,^(J) just as my Father conferred one on me, ³⁰ so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom^(K) and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.^(L)

³¹ “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked^(M) to sift all of you as wheat.^{(N) 32} But I have prayed for you,^(O) Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”^(P)

³³ But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”^(Q)

³⁴ Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”

³⁵ Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals,^(R) did you lack anything?”

“Nothing,” they answered.

³⁶ He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. ³⁷ It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’^[b];^(S) and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”

³⁸ The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.”

“That’s enough!” he replied.
